Soft, breathable and so luxurious, once you’ve slept in linen, you’ll never look back. Sure, linen bedding comes at a cost, but quality linen – that is 100 per cent Belgian, French or European flax linen – will last you for years to come as it becomes softer and surprisingly stronger with every wash.

Linen is loved not only for its effortlessly luxurious aesthetic but for its trans-seasonal qualities that carry you through summer, autumn, winter and spring. Linen, being a natural material, lets your skin breathe, which helps to regulate your body temperature, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter. It’s also highly absorbent, lint-free and non-allergenic which is why it feels so good to sleep in.

Your bed is often the focal point of the bedroom and a quilt cover offers an opportunity to make a style statement. Keep it calm and sophisticated with neutral or monochrome tones, or inject personality and playfulness with colour and pattern. The best thing about quilt covers is the fact that they allow you to change up your style on a whim – colourful bedroom one week, neutral the next!

So, if you’ve splurged on some linen sheets and you’re looking to buy a beautiful linen quilt cover to match, or you’re simply looking for an easy way to refresh your bedroom, we’ve found a range of different designs to suit every style and budget.

Let’s get one thing straight – we love a good pattern. Whether that’s a country-style gingham, a bold houndstooth, or a classic herringbone, different patterns offer a different look, feel, and aesthetic to a room. However, one pattern that flies under the radar for most is the humble striped pattern – and its beauty lies in its simplicity.

Australia’s beloved linen brand, Cultiver, has released its new collection, Luna, and the subtle, unassuming striped motif seen throughout this collection has unexpectedly caught our attention.

What is the Luna collection?

Luna by Cultiver is a love letter to neutral hues and stripes. From mini cushions to throws, Luna is expertly crafted on a Jacquard loom in Portugal to fit seamlessly into your interior style and decor. The Luna collection features a petite-size mini cushion, two lumbar cushions and two matching heavyweight throws. When it comes to styling your living room there’s no greater way to make a strong first impression than with a stylish cushion or two. Instead of re-arranging your living room or purchasing a new sofa as each season’s trends come and go, mixing up your couch cushions and how you arrange them is a quick and easy way to make the space feel brand new — without breaking the bank.

So, whether you’re after tassels or texture, patterned or not, we’ve rounded up 11 of the best couch cushions to shop for your living room — and answered some of your burning cushion-related questions.

A cosy collection fo cushions adorn and soften two tan leather sofas in this modern country home in Shoreham, Victoria. (Photography: Marnie Hawson | Story: Country Style)

What is the best type of cushion insert?

The answer to this question largely depends upon what the cushions will be used for. There are three standard options: foam, polyester, and feather or down.

Lightweight, durable, washable, and allergy-friendly, polyester cushions tend to offer more back support and are by far the most resilient of the three fillings. Alternatively, down cushions will give you that sink-in feeling, ultra-plush, ultra-squishy, and high quality — they’re a luxe choice. Just be warned: like other feather-filled products, such as doonas, they are difficult to clean! Finally, foam. It’s by far the cheapest option, so if your cushions are purely decorative, it’s a great choice.

What are the different kinds of cushion styles?

There are four types of cushions that you’ll typically find on your shopping journey:

 • Throw cushion
 • Boslter cushion
 • Breakfast cushion
 • Box/chair cushion

What is the most popular cushion size in Australia?

The most popular cushion sizes in Australia are 40x30cm, 40x40cm and 50x50cm. The cushion insert you buy should be the same size as the cover, or slightly bigger for a real plush effect — never go smaller or you’ll end up with empty corners!

The post 24 stylish bunk bed ideas even adults will love appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Looking for bunk bed ideas that aren’t just functional but fun? It’s hard to deny that bunk beds are an incredibly clever and utilitarian option for a bedroom, particularly for families with multiple children. But even if you’re working with a small room, bunk beds can be more than just incredibly functional, and lend themselves to plenty of creative ideas.

They are fantastic in a shared bedroom as they make great use of vertical space and create a fun sleeping zone for young ones, especially if they tend not to like sleeping alone at night. Bunk beds are also great for guest bedrooms, and there are plenty of ways to make them both appropriate (and even appealing!) for adults.

What age is appropriate for bunk beds?

Red Nose Australia recommends that children under the age of nine avoid sleeping on the top bunk as young children are more likely to fall when climbing up and down the ladder or fall from the top bunk while sleeping and are much more susceptible to serious injury.

To ensure your bunk beds are as safe as possible, Product Safety Australia recommend that connections and fasteners are checked regularly to ensure they are strong and secure.

To create a safe sleep environment, it’s also important to ensure that your bunk beds aren’t within reach of blind and curtain cords, lights and ceiling fans. They also recommend removing the ladder (if possible) from bunk beds when not in use to prevent small children from climbing unsupervised.

How to arrange a bedroom with bunk beds?

There are plenty of options when it comes to arranging bunk beds within a room. A lot depends on how much space you have to work with, and any specific restrictions within the room, including windows, ceiling heights and in-built wardrobes.

For small bedrooms, it’s best to position bunk beds against a wall so that there is enough room to still move around the space. For larger spaces, positioning a bunk bed in the middle of the room makes quite the feature and also means that everyone can access their bed from the side.

So whether you’re designing a kids’ room or a fun guest bedroom, take inspiration from these stylish bunk bed ideas that make the most of their respective rooms and space.

Is it cheaper to build bunk beds or buy them?

When weighing up the cost of building custom bunk beds versus buying bunk beds off the shelf, there are a few things to consider. Do you (or someone you know) have the skills and tools to build the bunk beds or would you need to hire someone? Hiring a carpenter or builder would cost a lot more than buying the materials and building yourself or buying ready-made bunk beds from a store.

It’s likely to be cheaper to buy bunk beds off the shelf or online and there are plenty of fabulous designs on the market that can be delivered straight to your door. You will need to assemble them yourself and it’s important this is done properly to avoid any accidents. If you’re not confident (or don’t have the time), hire someone to assemble them for you.

Plywood bunk beds

Inspired by the simplicity of Scandinavian architecture and minimalist beach houses in New Zealand, this contemporary home’s interiors are unassuming. “The palette is based on pale timbers, soft peachy tones and warm whites, referencing the colours of the coastline,” says owner Rebecca. Castello bunk beds from Plyroom tie in with the overall Scandi aesthetic.

Name a person who wouldn’t love to give their home a makeover. While we might dream about a complete overhaul, we may not have the budget to do this in one go. If your home is looking a little tired, however, there are some simple changes that can make all the difference — here’s how to update your home without a renovation.

Recent research from hipages found that nearly half (43%) of Aussie homeowners have experienced a renovation disaster in the last 12 months, which is equivalent to over 4.2 million households. From disasters during painting (43%) landscaping and gardening (33%) and plumbing-related jobs, and with the average cost of fixing our DIY mistakes around $500, it’s understandable why some would prefer a quick refresh over a full renovation.

There are loads of fun decorating projects you can do, from a simple cushion swap to replacing kitchen benchtops. Whatever room you want to make over, from your kitchen benchtops to your bathroom tiles, bring new life to your home with these easy, wallet-friendly updates.

Refresh your living room

Being one of the more high-traffic rooms in the home, it’s only natural that furniture would get a little worn. Marks on sofas and greying of light-coloured upholstery can often be fixed with a professional clean. Do an internet search for a company that services your area. Frayed fabrics and scratched leather may be unsalvageable, in which case you have two options: buy a new piece of furniture or refresh your old sofa with a slipcover. Otherwise, have a slipcover custom made by a furniture upholsterer – it will still cost a few hundred dollars, but what’s that in comparison to thousands for a new sofa?

A lovely living opens out to the petite yet lush courtyard in this heritage home in Sydney..

Affordable kitchen updates

One of the biggest impacts you can make to update your home without a renovation is to update the cabinet doors. A fresh coat of paint may be all they need. Use sample pots to try colours before committing and make sure you prime the doors properly.

Another option is to replace the doors all together. Updating cabinet handles, too, will make a big improvement and can be done in an hour.If you’re happy with your cabinets, maybe your benchtops need attention. How about a gleaming new slab of marble? Or perhaps you prefer butcher’s-block wood. If replacing the benchtop really isn’t an option, you could always paint over it.

Renters, don’t despair – you can disguise the benchtop with huge breadboard. Have one custom made in wood or stone. Finally, finish off your kitchen with new tapware.

Materials, such as white cabinetry and marble, were chosen to reflect light in this restored period home.

Dining room decor

A dining room facelift is more about the decorative than anything structural so if you move, you can take all the changes with you. The easiest update is with homewares – revamp your table with new tableware and table linen. Flowers, too, will do the trick.

Lighting is a key element in the dining room, but is often overlooked. It creates mood and ambiance – or a good spot for homework! A dramatic pendant light (or a cluster) over the table will create a focal point in the room.

Placing a rug under the table demarcates the dining zone. The dining room table and wooden curve chairs in Tash Sefton’s stylish family home is “a beautiful design and so comfortable”.

Beautiful bedroom ideas

The quickest and easiest way to update your home without a renovation is with fresh bedlinen. If you’re sick of what you have, treat yourself to a new set. Choose something that you can work back with what you’ve got to create different looks.

Another big impact you can make in the bedroom is with rugs. A large area rug can be placed in the middle of the room or under the bed – position it three-quarters under the bed and one-quarter sticking out the foot-end of the bed. For smaller pops of colour or pattern, place floormats or runners either side of the bed.

To create ambiance, change your lighting. If you have high ceilings, hang a beautiful pendant or chandelier. If your ceilings are low, focus on your bedside lamps. A change of shade might be all that’s required.

The finishing touches on a room are often the most fun to do, and in the case of the bedroom this means accessories. You don’t have to undertake a major overhaul – rearrange a vignette on your dresser, change the cushions and throw on the bed or put new photos in your frames. After all, some of the best facelifts are the most subtle.

Fabric colours and textures give a light & natural feel to the bedroom in this minimalist Mediterranean-inspired abode.

(Photography: The Palm Co.)

Budget bathroom updates

Lastly, pay some attention to the bathroom. Tiles are easy to transform with tile paint. As with the kitchen, replace vanity benchtops or update the tapware. Clear out the clutter in your medicine cabinet (be ruthless!) and put out a fresh set of fluffy towels – and a bathrobe to match.

A good scrub may suffice, but go a step further and regrout tiles for an as-new look – it’s easier than you think.

Coloured tiles add interest to the muted scheme, while the oak vanity and Topaz sustainable timber stool contribute texture in the bathroom of this interior designer’s beautifully minimal Victorian terrace.

We’re all for adding an area rug for a splash of colour or texture, added comfort underfoot, or to demarcate living zones within an open-plan space. They take a beating, though, and getting rugs professionally cleaned time and time again can quickly end up costing you more than the rug itself.

If you have pets or young children at home, washable rugs are a smart choice. Stains and spills are inevitable, and you don’t want to spend your days fretting or spot-cleaning, that’s for sure.

Washable rugs come in various designs and can be made from various materials, from plastic and polyester to wool. Some washable rugs are stain-resistant and can be easily spot-cleaned as needed. Some can be thrown in the washing machine (pending the size of your machine and rug), and then there are washable rugs with a removable top layer that can be washed in your washing machine, hung out to dry, and stuck back onto the base. This makes washing and drying your rug incredibly easy and allows you to swap out your top layer (or cover) for a different design as often as you please to give your home an affordable and simple style refresh.

If you’re looking for an easy-to-care-for and stylish floor rug that can stand up to the traffic, and be thrown into the washing machine or hosed down and left to dry, we’ve rounded up the best washable rugs on the market for indoors and out.

In country cottage homes where dust, sand, animals and mud abound, hard surfaces are the flooring of choice. But there’s nothing like taking off your shoes at the end of a long day and taking a seat in the living room with the touch of a soft and cosy rug underfoot. Especially in winter.

In addition to practical considerations, for many families, allergies and dust sensitivity is an everyday problem, and having carpet running through the entire home just won’t do. That’s where rugs come in, and give you the best of both worlds. A well-positioned rug will also work to create zones within an open-plan home.

Depending on your interiors, there are a few ways to style up your space with a winter rug.

Our favourite rug styles

Grey-tone and monochromatic rugs

If you stick to a monochromatic palette, you can explore the notion of layering rugs and furnishings in different patterns and textures. Aside from colour and pattern, texture is one of those concepts often lauded by interior designers. Even if you’re not quite ready to experiment with a geometric pattern, any soft grey rug is guaranteed to inject texture into a space while delineating an open-plan home. Grey is a naturally soothing shade and is unlikely to compete with your existing furniture and décor.

Berber-style rugs

Historically, Berber rugs were handwoven by the Berber people living in North Africa and the Sahara. Today, high-pile Berber-inspired rugs are popular in homes, channelling a monochrome Bohemian luxe style. These plush, soft-to-touch rugs tend to invite both family and friends to take a seat on the floor and talk the night away.

Moroccan-inspired rugs

Make a statement with floor coverings in warm autumn tones. The history of Berber and Moroccan rugs is interwoven (pun intended), but Moroccan decorating tends to conjure up images of rich hues, burnt oranges and vivid patterns. Turn your living room into a den of inspiration by layering up rugs in clashing colours and patterns.

Blue-toned rugs

Don’t feel blue! Allow these cool-toned rugs to add cheer to your home this winter. Strongly associated with tranquillity, blue is an uplifting colour that will keep the interior of your home feeling bright and light, even if the outside environment is acting otherwise.

Woven rugs

In a true testament to the current obsession with 70s-inspired design, sisal rugs are everywhere right now. Get on the bandwagon, too, with beautiful designs and patterns. The great thing about sisal is that it is durable and easy to clean. The only downside is that they’re not the most comfortable rugs to sit on, so they’re best kept for use in high-traffic zones or underneath dining tables.

6 things you should remove from your home ASAP for good feng shui https://www.homestolove.com.au/decorating/feng-shui-items/ Thu, 23 May 2024 05:38:26 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/your-guide-to-feng-shui-2965 Finesse the feng shui in your home with these easy dos and don'ts.

The post 6 things you should remove from your home ASAP for good feng shui appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Do you feel tired or uninspired in your space? Do you always seem to have bad luck? Your home’s feng shui (or lack thereof) could be to blame.

Despite being popularised in the West in the 80s, feng shui is actually one of the oldest continuing geographic traditions in the world. With origins in Taoism, the ancient Chinese practice centres around orienting spaces to keep in harmony with the flow of energy known as qi (“chi”). Translating to “wind-water”, feng shui involves the balancing of the five elements, water, wood, fire, earth and metal to encourage a positive environment and lifestyle, and while the mention of feng shui can raise some eyebrows, the foundational theory that enhancing your space to enhance your life is a compelling one.

Here’s everything you need to know on un-doing bad feng shui and bringing in the good qi.

What is considered bad feng shui?

According to the principles of feng shui, poorly placed items can do more than just make a space look clunky; they can actually have a tangible impact on various aspects of your life, from your relationships to your career. Regardless of whether or not you believe in the power of feng shui, its foundational rules can be applied to create a clutter-free, functional and peaceful environment; something we can all benefit from and appreciate.

Here, the experts at Trusted Psychics gave us the low-down on the things to avoid keeping in your home for enhanced feng shui.

1. Overflowing bookshelves

One thing you’ll quickly learn if you’re a newbie to feng shui is that it has a complete aversion to clutter. So, when it comes to housing your large book collection, make sure you don’t push the structural limits of your bookshelves by overstacking them. Instead, keep your shelves clean and tidy to promote calm and creativity.

2. Electronics in the bedroom

It’s something we all tend to be guilty of, but bringing your electronics into the bedroom can ultimately disturb the peaceful energy you need in for a good night’s sleep, including TVs. No arguments there!

3. Worn-out shoes

The entrance of the home is a crucial space to keep clear and clutter-free, meaning keeping your old, tired shoes piled up by the door is only going to bring stagnant energy. To enhance positive qi, you’ll want to get rid of that pair of shoes that’s on its last legs and keep your entryway clear, enhancing the sense of space and giving a positive impression to visitors.

4. Dried flowers

Any connotations to death, including dried flowers, are considered bad feng shui. If you’re serious about enhancing the energy flow of your space, you’ll want to bring in fresh and vibrant flowers that symbolise good health and vitality.

5. Unused exercise equipment

If you have a piece of exercise equipment that continues to take up space and gather dust, consider that it may actually be contributing to the stagnant energy of your home, even if it is just in your garage. By removing unused items, be it that elliptical or treadmill you bought as a New Year’s resolution, you’ll create new space for the things you need and the things you enjoy.

6. Old or unused kitchen gadgets and cookware

The same principle of removing unused items also applies to the kitchen. From gimmicky popcorn makers to old slow cookers, it’s easy to end up with a cupboard full of dusty kitchen gadgets you don’t need or use anymore. Removing them will eliminate that unwanted stagnant, negative energy to make space for more positive qi.

What is considered good feng shui?

Once you’re out with the bad feng shui items, it’s time to introduce these energy-enhancing things to promote positivity and peace in your home.

1. Plenty of natural light

Lighting is considered to be one of the strongest manifestations of energy. Natural light promotes a positive flow, so keep curtains and blinds open throughout the day and use lamps to illuminate dark spaces.

Candles are great for creating a calm and sensual energy in the bedroom. Good quality air is also important, so open windows to allow fresh air to flow throughout the house.

2. Indoor plants

Not only do indoor plants look good, but they also promote that all-important positive energy in your space. Plants have also been proven to improve health and wellbeing and in the context of feng shui, are always a positive addition to your home so long as they are healthy. The peace lily, jade plant, and money tree plant are all considered to be very lucky forms of foliage to have in your space.

3. Red

Colours are another important way of encouraging positive energy throughout your space, but red is quite an auspicious colour as it represents prosperity. But before you paint everything red, remember that feng shui is all about balance; too much red brings chaos, but just the right amount can appropriately dial up the energy. That’s where the recent Unexpected Red theory can really work to drive positive energy in a tasteful way.

4. Fish

Fish are another symbol of prosperity, so welcoming a goldfish into your home (preferably in your living room rather than bedroom or bathroom) could also enhance your overall wellbeing and luck in life. If you want to take it one step further, you can get a multiple of three fish which brings goodluck, or two fish if one is black, to represent the balance of yin and yang.

How to embrace the Unexpected Red Theory, this year’s hottest design trend https://www.homestolove.com.au/decorating/unexpected-red-theory/ Tue, 14 May 2024 06:54:20 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=254780 Red has set fire to interiors across the globe - and it's showing no sign of cooling down.

The post How to embrace the Unexpected Red Theory, this year’s hottest design trend appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
While the design world has always held a flame for the power of red and its ability to evoke passion, energy, and a pop of joy across an array of interior applications, its widespread use had largely been reserved for those with a natural confidence for all things bold. But, when US interior designer Taylor Simon coined The Unexpected Red Theory on TikTok earlier this year, the internet’s heart was set aflutter, sparking a rouge revolution that saw the polarising colour re-enter the design vernacular in a big way.

The rule, according to Taylor, suggests that inserting something red – big or small – into a room where it otherwise wouldn’t belong, can instantly elevate a space. Arguably, this classic design device has always existed, yet its popular embrace is also part of a wider shift away from white-on-white interiors in favour of homes that celebrate colour and personality, where more is more and less is a bore!

From mood-boosting saturation to punchy pairings, we show how to embrace this firey trend at home.

How to use red in your interiors

salmon-pink-wall-colours
Le Cabanon, a newly opened Airbnb in Cowes, Victoria, was designed by former architect Victor Vieaux and his partner, stylist Sharon Xie. It’s a visual manifestation of Australia’s unique coastal aesthetic with a nod to Le Corbusier’s iconic beach shack on the Côte d’Azur. Each bedroom has a distinctive colour palette, and the one shown has gentle peach tones amplified by a shock of red — a reference, says Victor, to Ricardo Bofill’s red-walled La Muralla Roja house. (Photography: Victor Vieaux | Styling: Sharon Xie)

Treat red as a new neutral

From splashes of ruby with salmon pink to soft rinses of peach visually spiked with bursts of raspberry, this sweet colour combination is a match made in chromatic heaven, with more creatives championing the complementary coupling than ever before. Just ask interior designer Gemma Gillett of Studio Gemma, who’s noticed more designers and consumers leaning into the spicy spectrum. “It’s easy to test the water of a colour when you don’t go all-in (by that, I mean red walls),” she says. “Instead, opt for something more neutral like dirty pink walls, using red as a clashing bolt of colour with furniture or decor.”

Pair it with a contrasting shade

Talk about a winning combination! Blue and red – whether that’s a mix of sky and scarlet, or cornflower and vermilion – have always been a harmonious pair due to the calming visual effect of blue and its ability to take the bite out of red without neutralising its overall impact. In 2024, we are seeing contemporary interpretations of this dreamy duo leaning into more muddy, earthier reds such as brick and burgundy alongside cooler-toned shades like steel and dusty blues.

How to revitalise your home with a light-coloured rug https://www.homestolove.com.au/decorating/home-decor/how-to-revitalise-your-home-with-a-rug/ Mon, 13 May 2024 05:26:44 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=254557 This simple trick will completely redefine the look and feel of your space

The post How to revitalise your home with a light-coloured rug appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
You don’t have to embark on an expensive renovation or extensive makeover to enhance the look and feel of a room. Sometimes, a single change, like introducing a light-coloured rug, is all it takes to breathe new life into your space.

Whether it’s adding sophistication to your living room, serenity to your bedroom or warmth to your dining area, the perfect rug can make a world of difference. Read on to find out how, and to get some care tips to keep your rugs looking brand new.

Come home in style

Supplied

Imagine walking through the door and into a space that instantly greets you with warmth and style. The Arabella runner rug does just that by elevating your entryway while whisking away the day’s grime.

This rug’s minimalist design and subtle tones work with all interior styles. The wool and jute blend feels heavenly underfoot and stands up to daily comings and goings, with a Scandinavian charm that’s hard to overlook. Good looks aside, the Arabella runner is also an eco-conscious and pet-friendly option. To keep yours in peak condition, vacuum gently without a beater bar and immediately blot any spills.

Cosy up your bedroom

For a bedroom that feels like a haven, it all comes down to incorporating elements that bring warmth and relaxation. Nothing does that better than a luxurious area rug like the Darren Palmer Zen rug.

You’ll feel your feet sinking into the plush texture of this wool-blend rug, plus the dense pile gives it a classy look that goes perfectly with bedroom decor. And with its white colour and subtle geometric patterns, it adds a touch of elegance to any space.

Vacuum regularly with a nozzle attachment to keep the fibres intact. When dealing with spills, just pat dry with a clean, absorbent cloth.

Supplied

Bring natural elegance indoors

For that effortless style we all covet, the Darren Palmer Earth rug is made from a blend of jute, cotton and wool and hand-loomed in India by local artisans. Its textured tones are ideal for a coastal home or holiday house, while the abstract pattern adds interest and texture.

To keep your rug in good condition, rotate every six months to ensure even wear and tear. Regular vacuuming on a low setting will prevent dirt and dust build-up without harming the wool fibres.

Mix it up with playful patterns and colours

Elevate the look of any room with a white rug peppered with an eye-catching pattern. The Amsterdam rug comes in a choice of sweet polka dots or a unique, nomadic-inspired print, making it a fun centrepiece for a boho or eclectic aesthetic.

Made from durable polypropylene, it’s built to last and is easy to maintain. A simple vacuum is all you need to keep it looking as vibrant as when you first laid it out – just skip the spinning brush to avoid any potential damage to the fibres.

Below, we explore some ideas that will assist you in better selecting the perfect bed frame for your home and some great options currently on the market.

How important is buying the right bed frame for your mattress?

The bed frame that you buy will ultimately have an effect on the longevity of your mattress and your overall comfort while sleeping. “A design that ensures breathability and airflow is key for a long lasting and functioning mattress,” says Koala Product Designer, Adam Harrigan.

A foam mattress for example suits a very rigid platform that can offer maximum breathability and structural stability.

What should you look for when buying a bed frame?

Adam Harrigan suggests considering each of the following elements:

 • Functionality: Your bed frame needs to be sturdy and supportive. Bed frames that move around and make noise aren’t ideal.
 • Size and height: It might seem obvious, but making sure you know your bedroom’s measurements and checking the bed frame size is crucial when deciding on which bed you can fit. Beyond bed size, height plays an important role. Lower bed frames tend to feel more inviting and open, whereas higher and bigger bed frames are more of a standout piece.
 • Materials used: Depending on your style and your space, one of the three materials that dominate the market will best suit you: timber, upholstery or metal. Check what your frame is specifically made from and try to opt for higher grade materials.
 • Storage space: Whether it’s under the bed or behind the bed head, storage space is a great addition to have, especially for those with smaller bedrooms.
 • Longevity: If possible, it’s worth investing in a design that will stand the test of time. Manufacturers of high-quality furniture make sure that the inner structure up to the fabrics can take heavy pressure for a longer time, therefore bringing more comfort to you.

How to make your own scented soy candles https://www.homestolove.com.au/decorating/how-to-make-scented-soy-candles-australia-6932/ Fri, 10 May 2024 06:36:28 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/how-to-make-scented-soy-candles-australia-6932 It's easier than you think to make your own bespoke shapes and scents.

The post How to make your own scented soy candles appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Nothing is more relaxing than the soft crackle of a burning wick and the subtle aroma of your favourite scent. But when a good quality candle ends up costing you upwards of $50, you can start to wonder if it’s really worth it.

We, of all people, know there are some spectacular scents on the market, but you’ll be pleased to know that it’s surprisingly easy and affordable to make candles at home. Plus, when you know how to make your own candles you get the added bonus of being able to create a bespoke fragrance that you might not necessarily find in store.

Once you get the basics down, you can even purchase candle moulds online and start making your own taper candles, or even more interesting sculptural shapes.

If you’re interested in learning how to make soy candles, we’ve put together a step-byb-step guide using just a few supplies bought online and things found around the home.

You will need:

 • Containers made to withstand heat
 • Candle wicks
 • Thermometer
 • Pouring jug
 • Wick holder
 • Fragrance oil
 • Soy wax flakes

Once you have gathered all the necessary equipment you can start to make your own soy candles following the steps below.

Soy wax is the preferred and most premium wax used to make candles.

Step 1: Melt the wax

Using the double-boiler method (just like chocolate), melt the wax over a simmering pot. A Pyrex jug works best for holding the wax to melt because it allows for easy handling.

To measure out the amount of wax needed use this formula:

Volume of the container (ml) x 0.77 = Soy Wax (g)

If you don’t have scales handy then you can quickly calculate the wax required by simply using the container to measure two full scoops of unmelted wax. When the wax melts down this should roughly fill the container.

Step 2: Prepare the container

Place the wick in the centre of the candle, make sure to keep it centred. You can opt to use a glue gun to hold the wick in place by putting a small amount of glue on the base of the wick. To hold the wick in the centre, stretch a piece of sticky-tape across the top of your container for it to lean against.

Discover the best candle care tips to make your candles last longer >

Step 3: Add the fragrance oil

Once the wax has reached 80 degrees Celsius, take the wax off the heat and transfer it into the pouring jug. After transferring the wax to a pouring jug, add the fragrance oil and stir for about 2 minutes. Add between 6-10% fragrance oil to grams of melted wax.

To calculate this follow this formula:

Soy Wax (g) x 0.08 = Fragrance Oil (ml)

If you do not know the volume of wax then calculate 8% of the volume of the container.

Container (ml) x 0.08 = Fragrance Oil (ml)

Step 4: Pour the candle

When the wax has cooled to 55 degrees Celsius, pour into the container. Be sure to check the wick is still centred after pouring as it can move sometimes.

Step 5: Let the candle set

Leave the candles to cool and set over 24 hours before burning it for the first time. When you finally do light it, remember to set your candle memory. Generally speaking, you need to burn every new candle for 1 hour per 2.4cm in diameter. This will ensure your candle burns all the way to the edge of your container each time you light it.

The benefits of soy wax

Soy wax is fast becoming the preferred wax used to make candles due to its many superior qualities including:

 • Superior scent throw
 • Longer burn time
 • Little to no soot
 • Burns evenly and clean
 • No nasty chemicals

When furnishing any bedroom, the first piece of furniture that comes to mind is the bed. Though this may seem obvious, you do have a few different arrangements to choose from when it comes to assembling your bed.

What is a bed base?

Not to be confused with a bed frame, a bed base is simply the base at the bottom of the bed that your mattress lies on top of. In contrast, a bed frame features a bed base with a bed head attached.

Whether or not you choose a bed frame or a bed base is a personal choice. However, if you love shopping for bed heads with unique designs separately, choosing a bed base (with no bed head attached) is a great option. Plus, bed bases are incredibly easy to put together, often consisting of only two to three components: the base, the legs, and the slats (if included).

Ready to build your dream bed ensemble? Read on for the best bed bases that will elevate your bedroom set-up.

Is a bed base better than slats?

Firstly, buying a bed base does not necessarily guarantee that it is free of slats – this boils down to the individual design of each bed base. However, it is common that bed bases are non-slatted. You may prefer a non-slatted bed base if you’re after a bed base that is sturdy. Further, some non-slatted bed bases may make your mattress feel a bit firmer but tend to lean on the pricier side. A slatted bed base, in contrast, is lightweight, cost-effective, and easy to manoeuvre – making it a great choice for those who tend to move a lot (or just love rearranging bedrooms).

Choosing either a slatted or a non-slatted bed base is ultimately up to your preferences, needs, and budget.

Can you buy just the base of a bed?

Yes, you certainly can. That is ultimately what a bed base is. If you don’t want a bedhead, then a bed base will work just fine to elevate your mattress off the ground as you sleep. A separate bed base is also a great option for those who love to swap out their bed heads occasionally.

Honeycomb blinds are the window coverings you need to get you through winter https://www.homestolove.com.au/decorating/honeycomb-blinds/ Thu, 09 May 2024 03:21:19 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=254345 It’s time to get bzzy.

The post Honeycomb blinds are the window coverings you need to get you through winter appeared first on Homes To Love.

Honeycomb blinds, also known as cellular blinds or cellular shades, are layered pleated window coverings that form a honeycomb-like structure – much like their waxy equivalent – when viewed from the side. Compared to other window covering options on the market, honeycomb blinds help to insulate your home, block light and offer privacy from neighbours.

Ahead of their time in terms of innovation and sustainability, this style of blind was first introduced into Australia in the late 1980s, and when Hunter Douglas introduced Luxaflex® Duette® Honeycomb Shades, they set new industry standards for energy efficiency.

With a variety of styles on the market, including single-cell and double-cell structural configurations, and a multitude of fabric and colour options to suit any privacy and light preferences, it’s no surprise that honeycomb blinds have gained huge popularity in recent years.

Do honeycomb shades really insulate?

It’s not just for aesthetics; up to 30% of total heat loss from your home occurs through uncovered windows and honeycomb blinds offer an innovative solution. The accordion-like structure of the blinds trap air to create a thermal barrier at your window, which adds an extra layer of insulation to keep your home cool in summer and warm in winter. This feature is what makes them the most energy efficient window coverings on the market, and a bit gentler on your back pocket too.

The latest model by Luxaflex®, the Duette® Architella® Shades features a honeycomb-within-a-honeycomb design for maximum energy efficiency, and provides more insulation than any other window covering on the market. Independent modelling shows they can reduce a home’s heating costs by up to 43%, making them the most energy efficient window coverings on the Australian market.

Are honeycomb blinds worth the money?

As with any big purchase, whether a product is deemed affordable or worth the money comes purely down to personal preference. Are you finding you spend a lot on energy bills from heating and cooling your home? Do you find your windows leach heat? Or do you live in a more temperate location and can get by with just a jumper in winter?

When you consider the potential cost savings from improved insulation, you may find that you would spend less on energy bills with honeycomb blinds, making them a cost-effective option. But whether that’s a worthwhile investment is up to you.

Luxaflex Duette Shades
Photo: Luxaflex

What is the difference between honeycomb and cellular blinds?

Nothing at all. Honeycomb blinds and cellular blinds are one and the same. The name comes from the defining honeycomb or cell-like structure of the pleats.

What is the lifespan of honeycomb blinds?

The blinds have a very typical life span compared to their roller and shutter counterparts, and the timing of its inevitable deterioration often coincides with the time many people may consider a refresh of their interiors. With ample care and maintenance, they can last between five and seven years.

How to clean honeycomb blinds

While less accessible than typical roller or shutter blinds, cleaning honeycomb blinds is not impossible. A simple blast with a can of compressed air or even a hairdryer can dislodge any debris on the inside of the blinds, which can be simply vacuumed up once removed.

As for the exterior, they can generally be wiped down with a damp cloth and left extended to dry fully.

Just like a lick of paint, window blinds and coverings can completely change the feel of a room. They’re the stylish shoes that elevate the dress when it comes to decorating our homes. And there are so many styles out there to choose from.

Blinds tend to be one of the most popular options because they’re affordable, come in a range of styles and fabrics, and suit a wide variety of needs, whether that’s blocking out light and heat or providing privacy. But there are plenty of options on the market, and knowing where to start looking is half the battle.

“Window covering solutions help manage light, heat and energy at the building envelope, reducing the need for artificial lighting, cooling and heating.” says Managing Director, Residential Division, Steve Saboune, Hunter Douglas Australia.

2024 marks 70 years since Luxaflex, the worldwide leading brand in window coverings, was introduced into the Australian market. “This year is a very special year for Hunter Douglas, as we celebrate 70 years since launching the Luxaflex brand in Australia,” says Steve. “To this day, we continue to expand the Australian product range of custom-made blinds, shutters and awnings, some of which are certified Australian Made, combining the best of international and local innovations.”

As with many things in our home, it’s important to not only weigh-up what it will look like, but also the function your window blinds will serve. Hot tip: don’t forget that you can sometimes see window blinds from the outside too! To help you decide whether you’d rather Roman blinds or a Plantation shutter, we’ve put together the ultimate guide for choosing the right window coverings for your space.

The best types of window blinds

Roller blinds

By far one of the most popular window coverings, roller blinds provide an easy up-and-down motion, which lets you flood your space with natural light or block it out as needed. They are usually fitted inside a window reveal or casement and suit the modern, mess-free aesthetic.

There are a few different fabric types to choose from with roller blinds. Transparent blinds — like unlined linen — are sheer and allow you to have a clear view outside during the day, while those outside can’t see in easily. But take note, at night time when the lights are on inside the opposite happens, so it’s common for people to use a ‘dual blind’.

Translucent blinds — often made from a polyester or blend — are light filtering but as you can’t see through them, so they provide more privacy throughout the day and night. Alternatively, BlockOut blinds have a solid backing and offer total privacy. They block out all light so they’re great for bedrooms, and also help keep out or retain heat.

Honeycomb blinds

Honeycomb blinds, also known as cellular shades, have gained immense popularity in homes due to their blend of practicality, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. One of their primary draws lies in their energy efficiency. Luxaflex® Duette® Shades is the most energy-efficient window covering on the Australian market. With superior insulation properties, the unique honeycomb structure traps air to keep your home cool in summer and warm in winter.

Their sleek and modern appearance adds a touch of sophistication to any space, complementing various interior styles. Additionally, they come in a wide range of colours, textures, and opacities, making it easy for homeowners to find the perfect match for their decor preferences.

Venetian blinds

Enjoying a recent resurgence, the humble Venetian blind has a clean horizontal blade that now comes in a more sleek profile and choice of narrow or wider blades. Venetian blinds can also work in every room of the house. PVC and aluminium designs are a practical option for wet areas, while timber Venetian blinds are a cost-effective alternative to plantation shutters while still providing that popular horizontal-blade look.

Plantation shutters

Plantation shutters offer a blend of timeless elegance and practicality, making them an excellent choice of window covering. Their classic design adds a touch of sophistication to any room while providing exceptional light control, privacy and insulation. Unlike traditional curtains or blinds, Plantation shutters are durable and easy to clean, making them ideal for high-traffic areas of the home.

Additionally, their adjustable louvers allow full control over the amount of light entering a room.

Vertical blinds

Hanging from the top on a slide-out track, vertical blinds are actually quite practical as the blades can be angled to provide privacy when allowing light to penetrate. Modern designs don’t have problems with their beading like older styles do, as instead there’s generally a weight in the base of each vertical blade, which makes them sit and look better than earlier designs.

Roman blinds

Made from fabric, Roman blinds fold up in wide horizontal panels, pulled by cords on one side. They are a popular choice to soften the look of a window and room overall. Often paired with curtains, Roman blinds provide insulation and work well in cooler climates.

The variety of fabrics you can use also provides endless options, including matching patterns and designs to your bedding or soft furnishings. There are also many designs in lightweight sheer fabrics, such as cotton, linen and hemp, which are a perfect choice for coastal-style homes.

Roman blinds are convenient because you can precisely adjust the amount of light entering a room at any time of the day, as well as helping to keep sound levels down in busy households (depending on your choice of fabric).

The post 13 dreamy quilts that will have you covered for all seasons appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
There’s nothing better than snuggling up under a plush quilt at the end of a long day, but did you know that your duvet can play a major role in maximising your quality of sleep?

Sure, we all know how important it is to choose the right mattress and sleep on the right pillow when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep, but we very rarely talk about what lies on top of us, except when we’re wondering which on-trend bedlinen to buy. The quilt plays an essential role in keeping you warm all night long, and as such, choosing the right one for you can be life-changing.

“You should feel comfortable beneath your quilt from the moment you climb into bed, to the moment you wake each morning,” explains Dimity Green. As part of Sheridan’s expert bedding team, Dimity knows exactly what you should be looking for to choose the right quilt for you.

“A quilt that is too hot or cold can prevent you from maintaining a regular sleeping temperature and will, therefore, disrupt your deep sleeping rhythms,” adds Dimity.

Luckily, choosing the right quilt for you is easier than you think. Below, we’ve picked out our favourites as well as a few key points to consider while you make your next quilt purchase

Differences between light and heavy quilts

The weight of your quilt can dramatically impact your sleep. Heavier quilts and calming blankets have recently become incredibly popular due to their ability to calm and soothe throughout the night. On the other hand, lightweight quilts are an ideal choice for those who hate feeling confined while sleeping.

Lightweight down and microfibre fills make a quilt incredibly cuddly and fluffy, while heavier quilts are usually made of warm materials like wool. When it comes to determining the weight of your quilt, you’ll want to pay attention to GSM (grams per square metre). This indicates the density of the fabric and overall weight of your duvet.

“It’s important to choose the right fill weight for the season,” explains Dimity. “Some bedding is for ‘all seasons’, while others are specifically designed for cooler or hotter months. For winter, natural fibres such as wool are one of the best insulators, however, are a little heavier than feather and down.”

If you love a lighter quilt through the warmer months and don’t want to buy a heavier quilt for winter, consider adding a stylish bed throw to your bedding collection.

“Throws are the perfect way to improve warmth as the temperature drops as they can be layered on top of your trans-seasonal bedding,” recommends Bed Threads’ founder Genevieve Rosen. “Choose high quality, natural fabrics such as linen which is a natural insulator that traps the heat in while still remaining light and breathable.”

What is the best type of quilt to buy in Australia?

In the world of quilts and duvets the material your blanket is made of plays the biggest role in ensuring you get a quality night of rest. After all, the material will affect the weight of your blanket, as well as how well it retains heat, and whether or not it’s appropriate for those of us who suffer from allergens and asthma.

When it comes to choosing the best quilt materials for you, there are two general categories…

Natural fibres vs man-made fibres

“Natural fibres are suitable for most sleeping types and your choice should be dependent on your preferred weight and the level of warmth required for your climate,” advises Dimity. Natural fibres and organic fibres include cotton, wool, mulberry silk, TENCEL Lyocell, feather and down.

On the other end of the spectrum are man-made fibres like polyester. “Man-made fibres are best for people who have allergies to feather and down,” explains Dimity. “Premium quality polyester will create the same lightweight warmth and loft of feather and down.”

What is the warmest quilt for winter in Australia?

The material of your quilt also impacts heat retention. For some, there’s nothing better than being warm and toasty throughout the night, while for others, something lightweight and more breathable is ideal – especially when it comes to summer. Lighter materials like bamboo and microfibres are more breathable than natural fibres like wool, but there’s no beating wool’s ability to retain heat all night long.

“Different fibres have different weight feelings and warmth ratings,” explains Dimity. “It’s important to consider how these fibres feel before investing in bedding to ensure you can maintain a comfortable body temperature throughout the night.”

A custom or ready-made furniture slipcover gives a classic sofa, dining chair, ottoman or bedhead an immediate refresh. It’s the forgiving cousin of fixed upholstery, covering a multitude of sins with a swathe of linen or on-trend pattern and easily removed for washing or remaking. Use a slipcover to preserve an heirloom or to update a cheap and cheerful buy. Both upcycling ideas reduce waste.

Fresh ideas and easy updates

 • New cushion covers are the simplest and cheapest way to update your bedroom or living area. Reuse existing inserts and make or buy covers in this season’s colours.
 • If having a cover custom-made, consider details such as the skirts, seams, trims and piping to set your piece apart.
 • Re-cover a mismatched pair of sofas or armchairs in the same fabric slipcover to create a harmonious look.
 • Use two different fabrics for a bedhead slipcover and rotate front and back for a quick seasonal refresh.

10 of the best electric blankets for a warm and cosy winter https://www.homestolove.com.au/shopping/best-electric-blanket-22438/ Mon, 29 Apr 2024 05:18:46 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/best-electric-blanket-22438 Make cold sheets a thing of the past.

The post 10 of the best electric blankets for a warm and cosy winter appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Getting out of bed on a cold winter morning is hard enough, never mind getting into bed during the chilly evenings. If you’re tired of layering blankets and jumpers, it may be time to invest in an electric blanket.

“Electric blankets are the perfect way to keep your bed warm during cold temperatures,” says Colin Jones, category expert at Appliances Online.

But how can you tell which electric blanket is best for you?

Today’s electric or heated blankets are much more sophisticated than their earlier counterparts, offering a variety of features that can quickly become confusing. “There are some electric blankets that can sense the conditions and make minor adjustments to maintain a selected temperature,” Colin says.

But for the most part, he recommends shoppers prioritise the following features: auto-timers, machine washability, customisable heating zones and quick heating capabilities.

Here are some of the best heated blankets, from fitted sheets to throws, that are sure to keep you toasty all winter long.

Are electric blankets expensive to run?

Electric blankets offer a low-cost form of heat when compared to other options, such as a space heater, says Colin. “The biggest benefit of an electric blanket is the heat and energy is concentrated on changing the temperature of people in the room, rather than the room itself.

“Since electric blankets disperse heat through built-in wires, they consume little energy. On average, they cost about four cents an hour, compared to some heaters, which can cost around 15 cents an hour. So if you had it on for nine hours a night, every night over three months in winter, it would be a very reasonable cost,” he says.

Are electric blankets safe?

All electric blankets sold in Australia must comply with strict safety standards. What’s more is that many modern electric blankets have in-built safety features like auto shut-off and overheat protection and, as a result, pose a low risk to users. That being said, it is important to follow a few safety precautions while using an electric blanket.

Can you wash an electric blanket?

There’s no blanket rule (pardon the pun) on washing electric blankets, so you’ll need to consult the care tag to see whether or not a machine wash for your particular blanket is safe. While older blankets tend not to be machine washable, newer ones generally are, although some can only tolerate a hand wash. The bottom line is, check before you wash!

Safety tips for using an electric blanket

 • Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions
 • Regularly inspect the electric blanket for scorch marks, wear, discolouration or damage
 • Never use an electric blanket on a water bed
 • Never fold an electric blanket. If you must store the blanket, roll it up instead to protect the wiring.

For a more comprehensive list of safety tips, visit the ACCC’s Winter Safety Guide.

There are few things in life that are guaranteed to lift almost anyone’s mood. One of them is good food, and another is undoubtedly fresh flowers.

Floral arrangements will refresh your home and add a little colour and variance to a place you’re probably overfamiliar with. Plus, if you look after them properly, they can stay fresh for longer than you might expect.

Of course, you can create your own blossoming garden that will provide you with fresh flowers all year around. But if you’re time or space-poor, we recommend turning to the queens of flowers, AKA your local florists. And, with Mother’s Day creeping up slowly but surely (May 12, to be exact) what better time than now to become familiar with the best florists that will find you the prettiest buds in season and deliver them to Mum’s front door?

So whether she prefers Australian natives, cherry blossoms, or the classic peony, here are our favourite florists who will deliver stunning floral arrangements and potted plants to your door. They will show Mum just how much you love and appreciate her.

Do local florists charge a delivery fee?

Most florists charge a delivery fee based on your location. The further the distance in which the flowers are to be delivered will determine the price of delivery. Some florists are able to deliver between states, while others only serve locally. It’s best to check with the florist/shop before placing an order to ensure your delivery preferences can be met.

Can you get flowers delivered in a vase?

Yes, a lot of flower shops now offer flowers in vases. This means you can display your bouquet immediately when they arrive at your doorstep.

Why turning on the ‘big light’ is banned forever (and we’re quietly pleased) https://www.homestolove.com.au/shopping/no-big-light-trend/ Tue, 23 Apr 2024 01:18:08 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=252725 Send this to a friend who needs to hear it.

The post Why turning on the ‘big light’ is banned forever (and we’re quietly pleased) appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
For those who are chronically online (guilty), you’ll know all about the ‘no big lights’ interior lighting trend. And if you don’t, prepare to be enlightened.

Unless you’re a fan of stark overhead lighting à la cool-tone office lights, in the name of productivity or fluorescent lights reminiscent of a doctor’s waiting room, you’ll want to know how banning the big light in your home—once and for all—will turn your home into a cosy one.

Image: Prue Ruscoe

What is the ‘big light’?

And what did it ever do to you? You ask. A great question, and we must admit there is a time and place for the so-called ‘big light’, however, interior design enthusiasts agree that the big lights, a name for all stark overhead lighting within the home, is often too harsh and intense for most everyday activities. Further, if you have more specific activities that may need lighting, for example, when you’re reading, task lighting is a great solution to a) keeping the big light off and 2) still having enough light not to strain your eyes.

Why is turning on the ‘big light’ banned?

Don’t just take our word for it. One of the very first videos to make the rounds on TikTok was from Australian presenter, Gemma Driscoll (who is now the one behind the trending audio), where she announces, “I don’t have many rules for my house, but I do have one, and that is that we never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever use the big light”.

Melbourne-based home design content creator duo, Josh Jessup and Matt Moss (@joshandmattdesign), are also on board this ‘no big light’ trend.

“First of all, the big light creates such a sterile look; it’s like a hospital,” says Matt.

“And if you really want to use the big light, pair it with ambient lighting to balance it all out,” he advises.

For San Francisco-based interior design content creator Eric Wang (@im-ericwang), never using big lights in his apartment is his number one tip to make your space more cosy instantly – and we couldn’t agree more.

So, whether you’ve been telling your friends and family about the benefits of keeping the big lights off or if you’ve recently converted to this interior lighting trend, we’ve found the best lighting options that will help you forget that big lights even exist within your home.

How can I make something special for Mother’s Day?

Mother’s Day is your chance to celebrate the mother figure(s) in your life. Though we are big advocates for showing those you love how much you appreciate them often, a marked occasion such as Mother’s Day is a good reminder to plan something special.

It doesn’t need to be over the top or grand; something as easy as making them their favourite breakfast before they wake up or organising a family lunch or a backyard picnic are all great fail-safe ideas for making the most special woman or women in your life feel extra loved on May 12.

The NSW Southern Highlands has always been a vibrant part of New South Wales, and these days its reputation is cemented as a destination for stylish homewares and antique furniture.

The pretty countryside, too, has been drawing people to the area for generations, but these days they’re as likely to come for the shopping as they are for a great weekend.

If you’re looking to explore the Southern Highlands, here are the best places to shop from Bowral, to Moss Vale and beyond.

Calling all fans of Netflix’s hit series, Bridgerton. From April 16th until 23rd April, Bowral is set to be dolled and gussied up for a glamorous week-long celebration of the show’s upcoming third season.

Fans are being treated to an exclusive early (and free) screening of the first episode at Bowral’s Empire Cinemas and to conclude the events on Tuesday 23rd April, Milton Park will be transformed for a regency-style Garden Party.

Netflix has put together a comprehensive guide for the events, which you can find here.

We all know storage is front-of-mind when it comes to transforming a house into a home, but it doesn’t always have to mean ceiling-to-floor cupboards and wall-to-wall complex joinery. That’s where floating shelves come in. Floating wall shelves can act as both additional storage, while also providing a sculptural feature for an empty wall.

From simple floating shelves for storing books to larger feature pieces, a wall shelf can be used to create chic vignettes throughout the home without compromising on floor space.

The key to installing any floating shelf is to ensure that you measure twice, and drill once. You’ll want to break out the measuring tape and spirit level to ensure that you’re mounting your floating shelf in the right spot and at the right angle.

If you’re planning on using it to store particularly heavy objects, make sure your shelf is supported by timber studs in your wall to keep it secure.

Available in a wide array of different colours, materials, styles and silhouettes, wall-mounted shelves are an easy storage solution for compact spaces.

How to install floating shelves

Installing a floating shelf may sound intimidating – where do the nails go? How is it floating really? But it’s actually easier than you might think. Below are some easy steps to follow.

 1. Find your wall studs – as with hanging up anything on your walls, locating wall studs is essential to ensure your shelves are installed securely and can support the weight of the items you put on top of them. You can use a stud finder to locate these.
 2. Make it level – using a level, mark a straight line on the wall to plan out where you want these floating shelves to sit.
 3. Add the brackets – most floating shelves come with their own installation kit, so reading the specific instructions from the manufacturer is advised here. However, generally, kits will come with a combination of brackets, screws, and wall anchors (for when you can’t find a stud) to help you secure the floating shelf discreetly.
 4. Slide it on – with brackets attached, you can slide the shelf easily via built-in grooves/slots.
 5. Decorate – once you’re happy with your shelves, you can decorate them to your heart’s desire.
