When it comes to choosing a mattress, finding one that has all the perfectly engineered comfort layers is one thing, but choosing its size is another.

Choosing the size of your mattress begins with the size of the room in which you plan to place it in. Whether that’s the master bedroom – which often has more space – or it’s in the guest bedroom or kids’ room, finding a size that works for each unique room is crucial.

Moreover, deciding if you’ll be sharing this bed with a partner or whether you just need enough space for one will also impact your decision. If you’re trying to decide if a double mattress is the mattress size for you, or if you’ve already decided and you’re looking to find the best double mattress to add to your home, then you’re at the right place.

What size is a double mattress?

In Australia, double mattresses are generally 1385 x 1900mm.

Is a double mattress suitable for couples?

Given its size, a double mattress can be suitable for couples. However, if you’re looking for a sleeping solution that offers you and your partner more moving space, then a double-sized mattress may be a bit snug. If space is what you’re after (and you have the room for it), we’d recommend opting for a Queen or King size mattress instead.

However, if you plan to share your bed occasionally – say when family visit for the weekend – then a double-sized mattress is a good size that can accommodate the occasional sleepover.

Nonetheless, a double mattress works well for individual sleepers who tend to roll around while they sleep – or just love the luxurious option of having more space (who doesn’t?). However, it is still a good mattress size for couples who don’t mind sleeping closer together.

If you’re looking for a dining table that helps give the illusion of a bigger dining space while also being big enough to cater to larger households -or more guests- then an oval dining table should be at the top of your considerations.

Perfect for soirees, rounded dining tables not only negate the possibility of table corner-inflicted injuries but also invite conversation. Although the couch and the kitchen bench have become the unofficial dining table after a long day at work, the dining table remains the congregation point for birthdays, family get-togethers, dinner parties and afternoon teas. You’ll likely have your dining table for years to come, so choosing the right one is key.

Is an oval a good shape for a dining table?

Consider an oval dining table the perfect medium between a generous rectangle dining table and a compact round dining table. Its soft rounded edges help reduce the amount of ‘dead space’ generally found with traditional rectangular dining tables (and is a tick according to the principles of feng shui), giving you more space to move freely within your dining space. An oval-shaped dining table also allows for more guests at the table when compared to a traditional round dining table and enhances conversational flow as each person is able to see one another.

In short, yes!

Still not convinced? Take a look at these stylish and simple oval dining tables that lend themselves to Instagrammable dinner parties and everyday living.

Say goodbye to damp bathroom floors with these innovative and eco-friendly stone bath mats https://www.homestolove.com.au/shopping/stone-bath-mats/ Wed, 05 Jun 2024 06:37:24 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=256728 It's set in stone: it's time to make the swap.

The post Say goodbye to damp bathroom floors with these innovative and eco-friendly stone bath mats appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
For most bathrooms, a bath mat is essential. Bath mats keep the space dry (or as dry as possible) after a shower, bath, or even after washing your face over the sink. However, finding a bath mat that is easy to maintain while also lasting the test of time is a lot harder than it sounds. That’s where stone bath mats come in.

Traditional bath mats, such as ones made from cotton, are great. Cotton is known for its moisture-wicking and hypoallergenic qualities. However, fabric bath mats tend to stay damp for a long time after you shower, which may cause them to develop mould or start smelling a bit funky (yuck). That’s why we were intrigued when we stumbled across the viral stone bath mat—which many reviewers claim to be the ultimate ‘Buy It For Life’ item for the home.

What are stone bath mats?

You may be confused or concerned if you haven’t seen stone bath mats before. But don’t worry—stone bath mats are anything but scary. A stone bath mat or a diatomite bath mat is made from diatomaceous stone. Diatomaceous stone is a naturally occurring, highly absorbent material, making it great for bath mats.

Diatomite stone bath mats are praised for their quick-drying nature (you can see them dry right in front of your eyes; see video above), their ability to keep your bathroom dry, and their ability to prevent mould or mildew growth.

Do stone bath mats work?

Diatomite stone bath mats work incredibly well to keep your bathroom dry after a shower or bath. Thanks to the porous nature of diatomite stone, it absorbs water quickly and effectively.

One thing to note is that these bath mats are made from, well, stone. So, if you’re used to fluffy bath mats, getting used to stone bath mats may take a while. It’s a completely different experience and feel – but fear not, it’s not freezing cold (like accidentally stepping onto floor tiles on a winter evening), as these stone bath mats stay closer to room temperature.

Creating a luxurious kitchen that balances function and form is an art and these spectacular spaces show us how it’s done. Boasting luxurious finishes like marble, stone, statement lighting and bespoke cabinetry, these kitchens are what dreams are made of. Fitted with high-end appliances that would made any avid cook or entertainer weak at the knees, no expense has been spared in these kitchens, resulting in some seriously inspiring spaces that exude luxury.

Here, Belle showcases the latest in luxury kitchen design with a glamorous batch of high-end kitchens that exhibit a considered approach to materiality and plenty of panache, brought to life by some of the most renowned architects and interior designers.

Luxe Hamptons

This classic kitchen sits within a Georgian-style home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. Designer Alexandra Kidd of Alexandra Kidd Design specified Dulux ‘Deep Aqua’ for the joinery to satisfy the clients’ love of colour. The Baker ‘Dressmaker’s’ chandeliers in bronze from Studio Cavit add a decorative flourish.

Dark and moody

This kitchen by Miriam Fanning of Mim Design, exudes confidence through its robust but beautiful materials, top-of-the-range appliances and specifically designed elements. “The design of this project does not deliver a themed look. Instead, it delivers a unique custom approach to kitchen design incorporating a timeless aspect with the use of authentic, visually appealing materials and product selection,” explains Miriam.

French flair

A glamorous yet family-focused apartment epitomises the style of designers Humbert & Poyet with both classic and contemporary references. Functional and chic, the kitchen mixes Arabescato marble with green cabinets, black BassamFellows ‘Tractor’ stools and the ‘Asterios’ pendant light in bronze and frosted glass by Humbert & Poyet.

(Photography: Francis Amiand)

Coastal luxe

Madeleine Blanchfield honoured this Crescent Head site with a home embracing all the elements of the quintessential Australian beach lifestyle: sun, views and an enviable location. The north-facing kitchen makes the most of the stunning vistas of mountains and ocean.

(Photography: Robert Walsh)

Global glamour

A world of influences informed the design of this glamorous kitchen in Sydney. Thomas Hamel blended English character with American charm to deliver a kitchen that was at once functional, inviting and glamorous. “As with the brief for the whole project, the kitchen had to feel ‘international’. The client didn’t want the space to feel like a typical Sydney terrace or traditionally Australian. We took style cues from English joinery details and combined them with a custom American-style rangehood.

Monochrome magic

SJB’s chic black and white design scheme for this Melbourne home, complete with bespoke fittings and luxe finishes, took it to another level of sophistication. The most significant architectural work was done at the rear, with a long kitchen designed as a showpiece to entertain family and friends. The glass skylight runs the length of the kitchen ceiling and admits plenty of light.

(Photography: Lucas Allen)

Timeless beauty

An inner-city terrace house in Sydney’s Potts Point received an elegant makeover from Alexandra Kidd. There are many beautiful bespoke details and clever uses of space. The kitchen epitomises these elements as the heart of the home. The narrow, central island in Champagne-coloured stainless steel and Calacatta marble encourages gatherings and is the perfect proportion for an intimate dinner party.

Statement stone

A considered mix of texture and tone give warmth, character and sincerity to this neutral kitchen, giving it a real sense of understated luxury and timeless elegance. Neolith’s eco-friendly Everest Sunrise used for the benchtop and splashback has a gentle, neutral quartzite-like finish with stunning gold accents that are only highlighted by the metallic accents on the stove. Super durable and low maintenance, Neolith is known for being highly resistant to water, heat, scratches, stains, and UV rays – making it an extremely functional, low-maintenance and sustainable finish.

8 of the best juicers for delicious and healthy fruit blends https://www.homestolove.com.au/rooms/kitchens/best-juicers-australia-23378/ Mon, 03 Jun 2024 05:31:41 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/best-juicers-australia-23378 Juicing at home is now easy-peasy lemon squeezy.

The post 8 of the best juicers for delicious and healthy fruit blends appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
A nutritious and delicious cold-pressed juice from your local cafe is arguably one of the best ways to start your day. However, it can quickly become one the most expensive too, with a fresh juice costing a small fortune nowadays.

That’s where a juicer can be a worthy investment, allowing you to make your own fresh blends at home. But to avoid having another appliance taking up space in your kitchen, you’ll need to know what type of juicer you’re looking for and which brands make quality juicers you’ll be using for years to come.

What are the different types of juicers?

Although similar to blenders, juicers work by crushing, squeezing and grinding rather than, quite obviously, blending. But not all juicers are the same. There are three main types: cold press juicers (masticating juicers), juice extractors (centrifugal juicers) and citrus press juicers.

According to Appliances Online’s Category Expert, Colin Jones, a cold press juicer works by turning ingredients against a mesh shield, producing a large amount of juice without a heating element (this means extra nutrients in your final product).

A juice extractor or centrifugal juicer, on the other hand, works by cutting ingredients down before a heating element is used to separate the juice from the pulp. This is a great option for those who want a juicer that works fast and can handle a variety of produce, including root vegetables.

Then you have a citrus press which works by crushing and exerting pressure to extract juice. Colin says a citrus press is best suited to those who juice fruits and citrus in small volumes.

With affordability, functionality and design in mind, we’ve rounded up some of the best juicers currently on the market.

24 stylish bunk bed ideas even adults will love https://www.homestolove.com.au/rooms/kids-rooms/bunk-bed-ideas-21129/ Fri, 31 May 2024 05:20:27 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/bunk-bed-ideas-21129 Space-saving and stylish, these bunk beds are an ingenious design choice.

The post 24 stylish bunk bed ideas even adults will love appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Looking for bunk bed ideas that aren’t just functional but fun? It’s hard to deny that bunk beds are an incredibly clever and utilitarian option for a bedroom, particularly for families with multiple children. But even if you’re working with a small room, bunk beds can be more than just incredibly functional, and lend themselves to plenty of creative ideas.

They are fantastic in a shared bedroom as they make great use of vertical space and create a fun sleeping zone for young ones, especially if they tend not to like sleeping alone at night. Bunk beds are also great for guest bedrooms, and there are plenty of ways to make them both appropriate (and even appealing!) for adults.

What age is appropriate for bunk beds?

Red Nose Australia recommends that children under the age of nine avoid sleeping on the top bunk as young children are more likely to fall when climbing up and down the ladder or fall from the top bunk while sleeping and are much more susceptible to serious injury.

To ensure your bunk beds are as safe as possible, Product Safety Australia recommend that connections and fasteners are checked regularly to ensure they are strong and secure.

To create a safe sleep environment, it’s also important to ensure that your bunk beds aren’t within reach of blind and curtain cords, lights and ceiling fans. They also recommend removing the ladder (if possible) from bunk beds when not in use to prevent small children from climbing unsupervised.

How to arrange a bedroom with bunk beds?

There are plenty of options when it comes to arranging bunk beds within a room. A lot depends on how much space you have to work with, and any specific restrictions within the room, including windows, ceiling heights and in-built wardrobes.

For small bedrooms, it’s best to position bunk beds against a wall so that there is enough room to still move around the space. For larger spaces, positioning a bunk bed in the middle of the room makes quite the feature and also means that everyone can access their bed from the side.

So whether you’re designing a kids’ room or a fun guest bedroom, take inspiration from these stylish bunk bed ideas that make the most of their respective rooms and space.

Is it cheaper to build bunk beds or buy them?

When weighing up the cost of building custom bunk beds versus buying bunk beds off the shelf, there are a few things to consider. Do you (or someone you know) have the skills and tools to build the bunk beds or would you need to hire someone? Hiring a carpenter or builder would cost a lot more than buying the materials and building yourself or buying ready-made bunk beds from a store.

It’s likely to be cheaper to buy bunk beds off the shelf or online and there are plenty of fabulous designs on the market that can be delivered straight to your door. You will need to assemble them yourself and it’s important this is done properly to avoid any accidents. If you’re not confident (or don’t have the time), hire someone to assemble them for you.

What type of bath towel is the best?

Egyptian cotton towels

Bath towels can be made from different materials, with Egyptian cotton traditionally taking the crown when it comes to the best type of cotton towel. Made from the Egyptian cotton plant where the staples are much longer (in comparison to regular cotton). Further, Egyptian cotton towels are more absorbent as it has a denser fabric composition.

Turkish towels

Turkish cotton hails from the Aegean Region in Turkey, and all cotton produced and turned into towels from this region are Turkish cotton towels. Turkish cotton feature long threads that are stronger and softer than regular cotton. And similar to Egyptian cotton, Turkish cotton also becomes softer and more absorbent as you use it and wash it.

Bamboo towels

Made from bamboo fibres, bamboo towels are a great eco-friendly option when compared to standard cotton towels. Bamboo is gentler than cotton and has a more delicate look and feel. It’s fast absorbing and has natural cooling properties that make it a great choice for warmer climates.

The post 9 reasons to switch to bamboo bed sheets this year appeared first on Homes To Love.

Bamboo seems to be the go-to material for those looking to take a step closer to sustainable living with bamboo homewares, bed linen, clothing and even building materials become increasingly popular.

If you’re looking for more ways to be greener at home, switching to bamboo sheets is one of the most simple yet sustainable upgrades you can make. Bamboo also requires very little water to grow and produces around 35 per cent more oxygen than trees, making it one of the most renewable resources out there.

Not only is bamboo bedding better for the environment, it’s also better for you as it doesn’t require the use of pesticides or chemical fertilisers and its excellent hypoallergenic properties make it the perfect choice for those with sensitive skin.

Co-founder of Mulberry Threads, Kira Sterling, explains how switching to bamboo bedding can benefit both your health and the environment.

What makes bamboo sheets best?

1. They are eco-friendly

Because bamboo is biodegradable and decomposes like other organic plant matter, it doesn’t release harmful gases into the environment which makes it an eco-friendly alternative to other materials like cotton and polyester.

2. They have thermo-regulating properties

Bamboo sheets are thermoregulating, meaning they keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Micro-sized holes of the bamboo fibre allows the fabric to breathe and regulate body temperature. These holes assist with insulation by keeping warm air between the body and the blanket.

3. They are kind to sensitive skin

Bamboo is gentler than many man-made fibres and will not irritate the skin. The hypoallergenic properties of the bamboo is perfect for those with sensitivities, and is a natural solution for those predisposed to skin irritations and asthma.

4. ‘Clean’ sleeping

Antibacterial textiles are made from bamboo fibres that are naturally resistant to bacteria, repels dust mites, mould and mildew and allows for greater airflow. This also means you’ll find that your bedding can last longer between washes.

5. Bamboo repels bad odour

“Bamboo kun” is a naturally occurring substance that is odour-resistant and allows for greater air flow (which in turn helps to repel body odour).

6. They are highly durable

Bamboo is a very strong and resilient material. When bamboo sheets are cared for properly, they last just as long if not longer than other fabrics.

7. They are chemical free

Mulberry Threads’ bamboo sheets are dyed using environmentally-friendly dyes and processes. The sheets are tested at all stages through to final product as part of the brand’s Oeko-Tex certification, ensuring there is no use of harmful chemicals.

8. They feel great, too!

Bamboo is an incredibly soft fabric and is so unique in texture. Bamboo drapes beautifully, so as sheets they feel amazing on you as you sleep – just the right amount of weight to give you comfort without feeling heavy.

The ideal thread count for bamboo sheets isn’t a straightforward metric like with cotton and linen; instead, it’s crucial to consider various factors such as the type of bamboo (viscose or bamboo linen), weaving technique (sateen or twill), and certifications for quality and sustainability. But generally, a thread count in the range of 300 to 500 is considered sufficient for bamboo sheets.

What is the best thread count for bamboo sheets?

Getting out of bed during the winter months is difficult enough, notwithstanding placing your feet on cold tiled floors or coming out of a steamy shower into a frigid room first thing in the morning. If you can relate, it might be time to make a bathroom heaters your next winter purchase.

As any Melbournite or Sydneysider – especially those with older homes would know – the mostly-balmy Australian climate made it so that plenty of homes were designed to keep the heat out – not in. This approach works perfectly fine 75% of the time, but for those painfully cold few months in the middle of the year, another method is needed.

That’s where bathroom heaters come into the fray. When you’re coming out of the steamy shower, there’s no need to endure an assault of icy air tickling your toes. Bathroom heaters are a safe, inexpensive heating appliance that could be your saviour these winter months.

But how can that be, when we all know never to mix water and electricity?

Why is my bathroom so cold in the winter?

The bathroom is typically the coldest room in the house as the materials used, like porcelain and tile, are designed to be waterproof, so feel much colder to the touch. Combine that with the absence of soft furnishings and plenty of extra ventilation to let the humidity (and heat!) out, the temperature difference during cooler months can feel stark.

What kind of heater is safe to use in a bathroom?

Bathroom heaters differ from the classic gas, electric, or reverse cycle systems you’ll find in the rest of your home. The compact appliance is designed specifically for use in the bathroom, and consideration increased humidity and water often found in these rooms. When choosing a heater for the bathroom, you will need to look for its IP rating, the international specification for water and particle protection. Some popular options include radiant light heaters, electric wall heaters and underfloor heaters.

What is an IP rating?

The two digits on your heater that come after the letters “IP” refer to its level of weatherproofing, with the first digit referring to its solid particle protection and the second digit referring to its protection against water. Particle ratings go from 1 (effective against objects larger than 50mm) to 6 (complete protection against dust), whereas waterproofing ratings go from 1 (protects against water droplets) to 9 (protects against high temperature water jets).

Can an IP24 heater be used in a bathroom?

The minimum rating you’d be looking for in a bathroom heater is IP24, which is effective against objects no smaller than 12.5mm in size (2) and has splash protection (4).

What IP rating is 100% waterproof in Australia?

For complete waterproofing, the gold standard would be IP67 or higher, which offers complete protection against dust (6) as well as immersion protection up to one metre (7).

Best bathroom heaters in Australia

The most common bathroom heaters are radiant heat lamps that use a warming amber light wave to directly heat the space below it. They don’t use moving air to circulate the heat, so are suitable for an immediate burst of ambient heat in small rooms like bathrooms, but they use a lot of electricity in the process.

Electric wall heaters are another great option as long as they are professionally installed and splash proof (rated IP24 or higher). They sit on your wall and circulate instant hot air instantly, and are suitable for small to large rooms.

Finally, underfloor heating is a simple luxury that offers the feeling of stepping out of the shower onto a warm floor. It’s space saving, energy efficient and a low cost way to take the chill out of the floor. The result is a toasty, warm and inviting bathroom.

“It’s as if the sea has been hardened into stone, cut out and landed here,” says architect Madeleine Blanchfield describing the honed Spectra marble island bench that anchors this kitchen in Sydney’s east.

“The client’s brief for a ‘beach house that isn’t a beach house’ informed the choice to have v-groove panelling sitting alongside more avant-garde choices such as the island that reads like a piece of furniture or sculpture.”

The space captures the vibrant energy of its beachside locale, particularly in the art selection, from the unconventional use of a bespoke Ben Mazey ceramic installation as a splashback, to its playful neighbour, a painting by Brendan Huntley. The kitchen is sandwiched by points of connection to nature, with a wall of windows on one side and an internal courtyard on the other. The result is a living space bathed in sunshine, at all times in conversation with the bustle of the suburb beyond.

What luxury items did you choose for this kitchen regardless of budget?

“Commissioning the artist Ben Mazey to produce a one-of-a-kind custom artwork for the rear wall, creating something joyful for something as utilitarian as a cooktop splashback helps to transform the kitchen into a space that is deeply personal to our client. The kitchen island itself is entirely bespoke.”

What should I look out for when buying bar stools?

Getting the size of your bar stool correct is crucial when you’re shopping around.

The correct height for your stools will depend on the height of your island bench. Before you go shopping, measure from the floor to the underside of your island bench and take this measurement with you as you shop. Ideally allow approximately 25cm between your seat and the top of your table – but ensure there’s plenty of clearance for your legs if you have a thick benchtop.

If you are building a kitchen from scratch, start by considering how many stools are ideal for your family and ensure your island bench provides enough room to accommodate them.

Ideally allow 50-75cm for each bar stool, plus another 12-15cm per stool for arm room and access. Bar stools with backs tend to take up more room than those without.

If you’ve inherited an island bench and are buying bar stools to go under it, work backwards from the existing bench width and find stools that fit with the additional 12-15cm of space per stool.

Make sure you also measure the width at the base of your bar stools if the feet are wider than the seat, which is often the case. The seats may have room underneath the bench but if the legs and feet are getting tangled, it’s not a comfortable fit.

What is the best material for bar stools?

The sky is the limit – or perhaps your budget is. This is one case where you definitely get what you pay for. The build quality in a bar stool is reflected in its price and your investment will be rewarded with a long and sturdy life when you spend more.

If opting for upholstered bar stools, consider removable bar stool covers which will give you more flexibility when choosing fabric. You might like to get more than one set to rotate for cleaning and options to switch out for a more seasonal look.

6 nursing chairs that will support you through those sleepless nights https://www.homestolove.com.au/shopping/best-nursery-chairs-australia-23357/ Tue, 21 May 2024 00:29:24 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/best-nursery-chairs-australia-23357 Complete your baby's room with a supportive, comfortable and stylish nursery chair.

The post 6 nursing chairs that will support you through those sleepless nights appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
There’s no doubt about it, preparing a nursery for a newborn is an exciting, yet expensive, task. Once you’ve purchased all of the essentials like a cot, linen and a change table, it may feel like too much of an indulgence to purchase a nursing chair solely for the purpose of being comfortable while you feed your little one.

But the truth is, even a small baby can quickly become heavy if you’re relying on your own arm strength for long stretches of time. Pair this with feelings of fatigue from late-night feeds, and you’ll quickly be wishing you had a comfy, supportive place to sit (and perhaps recline) to endure it all!

Here, we run through some key features to look for when shopping for a nursery chair and some of the best nursing chairs (from recliners to rocking chairs, gliders, and more) you can buy right now.

What type of chair is best for a nursery?

While some retailers specialise in products marketed specifically as ‘nursing chairs’, the truth is any chair with the following features could be perfect:

 • Padded armrest
 • Lower back support
 • Easy to get in and out of while carrying baby
 • Easy-care fabric that will resist stains
 • Safety lock mechanism (for recliners and gliders)

In terms of aesthetics, the current trend is towards fabrics in white or warm neutrals. It’s no secret that babies are messy, so if you’re concerned about keeping your nursery chair looking clean and pristine, consider purchasing an upholstery cleaner such as the Bissell Spot Clean or opt for a faux leather design that can be wiped clean.

 2. Il Tutto reclining ‘Chelsea’ chair in Grey Frost, $799, Baby Bunting (here’s why)

This new Emma Sleep bed is the ultimate space-saving pick https://www.homestolove.com.au/rooms/bedrooms/emma-sleep-new-release/ Mon, 20 May 2024 02:46:56 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=255316 We're serious about sleep (and storage space).

The post This new Emma Sleep bed is the ultimate space-saving pick appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
It’s no secret that we all value our precious sleep time. So much so that we have a laundry list of things to tick off when it comes to curating the perfect sanctuary for the perfect night’s sleep. From ensuring we have the best ergonomic mattress, the perfect memory foam pillow to rest our head on, to choosing the best bed frames that are sturdy (and stylish) – every ingredient to the perfect night’s sleep is crucial. That’s why we were deeply intrigued when the sleep experts at Emma Sleep announced their newest dreamy additions to their bed range.

The best bed frame for small spaces

Emma storage bed

Beds with storage have always been a game-changer for smaller spaces. Whether that’s the kids’ bedroom or guest room or you’re embracing apartment living, every bit of extra storage space counts. That’s why Emma Sleep has released the newest addition to its bed range: the new Emma Sleep storage bed.

The Emma storage bed features three metres of under-bed storage, perfect for storing extra bed linen, throws and cushions between seasons. Plus, say goodbye to bending over in awkward positions to reach under your bed – with an easy and sturdy gas-lift mechanism, the entire top lifts up effortlessly so you can see everything at a glance. Further, the gas-lift mechanism is robust and durable, so you know it’ll last for years to come.

Emma storage bed, from $948.80 (usually $1186), Emma Sleep

Besides its obvious handy storage feature, the Emma Sleep also moves away from the clunky storage bed designs of the past. Instead, the luxurious upholstery detail in the Emma storage bed makes it the perfect stylish yet functional piece that’ll fit seamlessly into any modern abode.

The Emma storage bed is currently 20 per cent off, starting at $984.80 (usually $1186) for a Double.

The best bed base for the minimalist

If you’re decorating within the minimalist style, you’ll want to choose a bed frame or bed base that is sturdy but not bulky. That’s where Emma Sleep comes in.

For the minimalist, extra concealed storage space is often not needed. So, this metal bed frame is the perfect pick. It elevates the bed above the ground and gives the illusion of a bigger space. It also ensures your mattress gets the much-needed airflow it needs without overwhelming your space.

The extra space underneath this bed base acts as a great no-frills storage option, too.

It’s a sleek, stylish, simple, sturdy pick. Thanks to its metal construction, it’s not only a great addition to a modern or industrial-style home, but it’s also built to last. The Emma metal bed uses durable metals that are ISO-certified to be safe and sturdy. Plus, if push comes to shove, and you really do need the extra storage space under the bed (hey, it happens), this bed frame is elevated enough for you to pop a few boxes underneath, too.

Available in Single, King Single, Double, Queen, and King sizes, to suit your needs, the Emma metal bed is currently 20 per cent off, starting at $399.20 (usually $499) for a Single.

So, whether you’re after concealed storage or just a simple, no-frills bed base that will elevate your mattress and the look of your bedroom, Emma Sleep is where you want to be browsing…see you at checkout.

Linen, bamboo or cotton: which material is the best for bed sheets? https://www.homestolove.com.au/shopping/how-to-pick-the-best-bedlinen-for-you-4649/ Fri, 17 May 2024 06:50:57 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/how-to-pick-the-best-bedlinen-for-you-4649 I tried them all so you don't have to.

The post Linen, bamboo or cotton: which material is the best for bed sheets? appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
When it comes to shopping for sheets, there’s one important factor to consider (before you dive into thread counts), and that’s deciphering which bed sheet material reigns supreme. And with an array of materials out there, finding one to suit your preferences can be a stressful journey – after all, having a good night’s sleep is of high importance for all.

For most of my life, I’ve stuck with cotton sheets, mainly out of habit or familiarity. However, I was determined to try other materials to ensure I wasn’t missing out on sleeping on the best of the best when it comes to bed sheets.

So, if you’ve been wondering which bed sheet material you should opt for – out of linen, cotton, or bamboo – I’ve done the hard work for you (so you don’t have to). Below are my honest thoughts after testing and trialling the most popular bed sheet materials on the market.

Organic cotton sheets

Organic cotton quilt cover with matching pillowcases in Matcha Stripes, from $159, Hommey

Cotton is the most popular fibre for bedding, but it’s also one of the most diverse, so it pays to know what you’re looking for.

When the coveted homewares brand Hommey released its first bedding collection featuring organic cotton, I knew I had to try it for myself. As I’m pretty familiar with cotton sheets, I was interested to see if there was a difference in feel, texture, and experience with organic cotton.

I trialled the organic cotton quilt cover (with matching pillowcases) in Matcha Stripes, which starts at $159 for just the duvet cover.

After putting these sheets in the trusty washing machine for the first wash before use (a must), I was ready to, well, go to sleep. After its first wash, already, the organic cotton material felt softer than when I initially took it out of the box. The sheets were also a bit lighter than I expected, which is nice if you like lightweight bedding. However, even though it is lightweight, it is still a cosy pick. So much so that I wouldn’t particularly recommend organic cotton for those who run hot while they sleep.

The organic quilt covers and pillowcases from Hommey feature a 240 thread count—which, in my opinion, is the perfect amount for this particular fibre. Any higher would make it too heavy and uncomfortable for everyday use. They’re also woven in a sateen weave for added softness and breathability. The great thing about organic cotton is that the options for design, patterns and colour are a lot bigger and varied compared to other fibres such as silk or bamboo. So, if you love bold patterns or colours – cotton is worth considering. Plus, compared with standard cotton, organic cotton is a more renewable source, too.

Overall verdict on organic cotton sheets

Organic cotton sheets aren’t particularly cool or warm, making them a great all-season pick. They will keep you warm in winter but still feel lightweight enough to sleep in during summer. However, as mentioned earlier, I would not recommend organic cotton sheets for those who run hot while they sleep, as they lack cooling properties that you may be able to find in an alternative material. Nonetheless, I loved the bold design of the Matcha Stripes pattern (which makes this sheet set stand out from the rest) and its overall cosy feel.

Shop the Hommey organic cotton sheets in Matcha Stripes, here.

Linen sheets

Morgan & Finch Milano luxury linen sheet set in Khaki, from $299.95, Bed Bath N’ Table.

Next up, linen bed sheets.

I opted to try out the Milano French flax linen sheet set from Morgan & Finch. As expected, linen sheets were the most lightweight option out of the three. French flax linen is known for its highly breathable composition that can absorb up to 20 per cent of its weight in moisture before feeling damp. Although I don’t run hot when I sleep, the breathable and cooling nature of this linen set is still great, and I can see why it is such a popular option for summer (and for those who run hot when they sleep).

Further, as I trialled these linen sheets during winter, it did mean I was putting its heat retention properties to the real test. And to my surprise, although linen is known as a popular summer bedding choice, it held up well during chillier nights too. However, I would still recommend adding a cosy throw overtop or coupling a linen quilt cover with a thicker quilt for winter to ensure you’re super cosy.

On the other hand, the feel of linen sheets is quite unique, and its organic properties are more pronounced to the touch. Some would describe it as slightly scratchier than its cotton or bamboo counterparts, and I would agree. However, linen sheets are strong, durable, and will become softer with every wash. Think of it as similar to ‘breaking into’ your new leather boots—it takes time, but it’s worth the investment.

The Milano linen sheets are made from pure linen, which is made from flax plants grown in regions of France. It has a natural and organic look and feel, making it a great option for country or rustic-styled homes.

Overall verdict on linen sheets

I had high hopes when it came to trialling linen sheets, and I was not disappointed. The Milano linen sheets were everything I had expected from the fibre – a natural, organic, and lightweight bedding option. If you’re expecting your linen sheets to feel smooth like a baby’s bottom, then linen sheets are not for you. But, if you’re after an investment piece that will last the test of time, get softer with every wash, and add a rustic charm into your bedroom, linen sheets is your best choice.

Bamboo sheets

Ecosa bamboo sheet set in Glacial Green, from $126 (usually $180), Ecosa

Last but not least, bamboo bedding.

Bamboo bedding is a newer fibre to the bed linen industry, only entering the commercial market in the early 2000s. Bamboo sheets are known to have a finish very similar to silk sheets, so I was excited to slip into this bamboo sheet set from Ecosa, stat.

Right off the bat, this bamboo sheet set was a lot heavier than I anticipated. And for someone who absolutely despises changing bed sheets every week (why is it a workout and a half?), I was not looking forward to the chore of changing my sheets – especially when they felt heavier than usual. Nonetheless, I soldiered on and gave these bamboo sheets a good go, and boy, am I glad I did.

The silky-smooth texture of the bamboo sheets against the skin was unmatched – it was nothing I had ever experienced from a sheet set before. And we have the dreamy sateen weave and rounded bamboo fibres to thank for that. Upon further investigation, I learnt that these bamboo sheets have a 400 thread count (which explains the denser feel) but are still breathable and moisture-wicking.

I loved the fact that bamboo offers the same soft feel as silk without making you feel like you might slide right off your bed (dramatic, but true). It’s also a more affordable fibre than silk.

Overall verdict on bamboo sheets

After trying bamboo sheets firsthand, I finally understand the hype. They’re soft, cool, and hypoallergenic. And despite my first impression of these bamboo sheets possibly being too heavy for everyday use, I was surprised that they didn’t feel too heavy when you actually slept in them. Plus, its slight cooling effect on the skin is a luxurious touch I now cannot give up.

It’s safe to say, I’m now a bamboo sheets convert.

Final thoughts

After trialling organic cotton, French linen, and bamboo sheets, it’s hard to choose a favourite. Each sheet material has its own unique qualities, so it’s important to take your own personal preferences into consideration when choosing a material for your new sheets. If you’re a hot sleeper, I’d recommend linen or bamboo sheets, and the latter if you love the feeling of silk. If you love that cosy feel every night, organic cotton is your best bet.

Whether you’re looking to introduce subtle texture to your space with elegant grass-cloth or impress with a playful, whimsical pattern, wallpaper can add instant character and colour across a range of interior styles.

Hannah Cecil Gurney, daughter of de Gournay founder Claud Cecil Gurney and now director of the handpainted wallpaper company can attest to the allure and impact of using wallpaper in your home.

“In my childhood, my father covered our entire house head-to-toe in his scenic wall coverings, rich in palette and pattern,” she says.

“I was aware of their transportive powers from an early age.”

Despite interior design’s penchant for white paint and minimalism, wallpaper offers the opportunity to make a statement, and can easily be updated with your evolving taste. These days there are even removable options for those cautious of making too big of a commitment.

So, if you’re looking for a low-commitment way to inject life and personality into your space, find inspiration in these bold wallpaper designs as well as our top wallpaper picks including designs from Milton & King and Natty & Polly.

What is the best wood for a bed frame?

When choosing the best wood for your bed frame, there are a few key specs to consider, such as the weight of your mattress and whether you’ll be sharing your bed with a partner. If your mattress is on the heavier side, it’s crucial to opt for a sturdy wooden bed frame. Hardwoods like oak, walnut, or mahogany are great options for this. Further, if you’ll be sharing a bed, opting for a sturdier base is a must. If you have a lighter mattress, woods like pine is an excellent option, too.

There’s no fabric quite as lavish and loved as silk, especially when it comes to the bedroom (maybe with the exception of linen). Adding a special level of sophistication that no other type of bedding can offer, silk sheets are the ultimate symbol of luxury. But, are they really worth the splurge? To put it simply, yes. An expensive investment, no doubt, but one you’ll reap a myriad of rewards from.

Silk is the softest of all fibres and has natural skin-soothing and allergy-fighting properties for your best sleep yet. Doubting its lightness will keep you warm? The luxurious fabric is considered a better insulator than Egyptian cotton. There are two main types available: tussah silk and cultivated mulberry silk, which is by far the highest quality. The latter produces smooth, fine-textured bed linen that’s extremely durable, whilst bedding made with tussah silk has a shorter shelf life and a coarser texture.

When buying silk bedding, you should factor in momme (mm) weight, the traditional silk measurement that indicates quality. As a guide, the higher the momme weight, the better the quality with most good-quality bedding ranging between 19-25 momme. Splurging on your sleep space is well worth it, so you’ll be doing yourself a favour for many years to come. Ahead, the most stylish silk sheets money can buy to help you achieve the bedroom of your dreams.

What are the benefits of buying a washer dryer combo machine?

The main benefit of a washer dryer combo machine is the space you can save in your home, as they are a much more compact option compared to having two separate machines. “The key benefits of having a washing/dryer combo comes back to space and time,” says Andrew Wand, the Head of the Home Appliances Department at Samsung. “If you’re limited on laundry space, you’re able to have the benefits of both machines in one unit.”

Whether you’re planning on creating a European-style laundry in the kitchen or are hoping to take advantage of the empty space underneath the stairs, a single unit will always be a more space-savvy choice than two separate units – especially if you tend to use the dryer sparingly throughout the year.

Do washer dryer combos use more electricity?

Combined washer dryer units tend to be fairly energy efficient because they generally feature the same washing components as most washing machines, and utilise the same parts for the drying cycle. Standalone dryers have traditionally used air condenser technology which usually requires external venting to pump out moisture (using more energy to do so) and another downside of this is that it can cause condensation within the house.

Heat pumps are the latest development in drying technology and are considered a much more energy-efficient alternative to condenser dryers. “They’re a very efficient way to dry clothes as they have a more gentle drying process and use lower temperature air,” explains Brad, “they do take longer, but it’s a more energy-efficient way of heating and extracting moisture from clothes.”

Turn even the smallest space into a spare bedroom with these stylish single sofa beds https://www.homestolove.com.au/rooms/bedrooms/single-sofa-bed-australia/ Tue, 14 May 2024 07:43:58 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=254732 With just a single sofa bed, you can transform any room.

Whether you live in a compact city apartment or a bustling family home in the suburbs, the desire to maximise the versatility of each room in your home is a universally understood language. And with the addition of even just a single sofa bed, along with these other simple tips, you’ll be guest ready in no time.

While it may seem obvious to some, designing our homes to fit our needs is not always the beaten path, but there really is no rule-book for how you should utilise each room. Even if “3 bedroom, 2 bath” is what it says on the tin, you should feel empowered to think of it as more of a suggestion than a rule.

When you consider work-from-home requirements, children’s play rooms, home gyms and even walk-in-wardrobes (like this three-bedroom home retrofitted into a one-bedroom with two walk-in wardrobes), personalising your home can bring so much more enjoyment to the space in which you spend the majority of your time.

To save you sacrificing function in the event of overnight guests (expected or otherwise), there are a few tricks you can employ. Here are our favourite ways to turn even the smallest spaces into a spare bedroom.

Design for multi-function

Let’s say you’ve reclaimed one of the three bedrooms for your home office, with all the essentials: an imposing desktop monitor, desks, drawers and chair staking their claim on the majority of the space. Designing this for multi-function can be as simple as: desk drawers that can double as a bedside stand; ergonomic chairs that fit flush under the desk and out of the way; and a large desktop monitor that can be seen from any corner of the room, perfect to double as a screen for movie night.

Plus, neutral coastal-chic colour schemes need not be disrupted by harsh black computer hardware, you’re spoilt for choice with these aesthetic and stylish home office essentials.

Make use of room dividers and storage

The second of your three bedrooms has, over time, found itself becoming a walk-in wardrobe of sorts – distinguishable by the dreaded floor-drobe. We’ve all been there, using the spare room as an additional storage space for winter coats and the like, when suddenly, one day, it’s become your personal dressing room and no one, not even the jacket covered chair, is quite sure how.

When reclaiming a misbehaving spare room for your impending guests, room dividers and plenty of storage solutions can be all you need. A room divider can help partition your room and keep the visual clutter separated from any sleeping space. And ensuring you have the right amount of storage and hanging spaces available for the quantity of clothing you intend to store in here, along with any clothing your guest will bring with them, will help keep the room ready for what you need it for: a restful night’s sleep.

Opt for multi-use furniture

A sofa bed is the ultimate versatile furniture piece that can be called on in a time of need, and really is the best investment in your multi-use spaces you can make. And, when a compact room is what you’re working with, a single sofa bed or an armchair sofa bed will take it from home-office or walk-in wardrobe to a welcoming haven for guests at the drop of a hat.

Here are the best single sofa beds on the market. Or, if you have a bit more room to play with, you might be in the market for a full size sofa bed.

Can you sleep on a sofa bed permanently?

While they’re a great versatile option to transform limited spaces, and can be ultra-comfortable for your guests temporarily, it’s not recommended to permanently sleep on a sofa bed. Your dedicated mattress will have better support and will be more comfortable in the long run. A sofa bed is only meant to offer temporary solution.

Can a single sofa bed fit two adults?

A typical single bed is 92cm wide, so it’d be tight! If you’re looking for a sofa bed fit for a couple, you’d be better off looking into the full size sofa beds over a single. However, in a pinch, or if just for two small children, you might be able to get away with the single sofa bed.

How to revitalise your home with a light-coloured rug https://www.homestolove.com.au/decorating/home-decor/how-to-revitalise-your-home-with-a-rug/ Mon, 13 May 2024 05:26:44 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=254557 This simple trick will completely redefine the look and feel of your space

You don’t have to embark on an expensive renovation or extensive makeover to enhance the look and feel of a room. Sometimes, a single change, like introducing a light-coloured rug, is all it takes to breathe new life into your space.

Whether it’s adding sophistication to your living room, serenity to your bedroom or warmth to your dining area, the perfect rug can make a world of difference. Read on to find out how, and to get some care tips to keep your rugs looking brand new.

Come home in style

Supplied

Imagine walking through the door and into a space that instantly greets you with warmth and style. The Arabella runner rug does just that by elevating your entryway while whisking away the day’s grime.

This rug’s minimalist design and subtle tones work with all interior styles. The wool and jute blend feels heavenly underfoot and stands up to daily comings and goings, with a Scandinavian charm that’s hard to overlook. Good looks aside, the Arabella runner is also an eco-conscious and pet-friendly option. To keep yours in peak condition, vacuum gently without a beater bar and immediately blot any spills.

Cosy up your bedroom

For a bedroom that feels like a haven, it all comes down to incorporating elements that bring warmth and relaxation. Nothing does that better than a luxurious area rug like the Darren Palmer Zen rug.

You’ll feel your feet sinking into the plush texture of this wool-blend rug, plus the dense pile gives it a classy look that goes perfectly with bedroom decor. And with its white colour and subtle geometric patterns, it adds a touch of elegance to any space.

Vacuum regularly with a nozzle attachment to keep the fibres intact. When dealing with spills, just pat dry with a clean, absorbent cloth.

Supplied

Bring natural elegance indoors

For that effortless style we all covet, the Darren Palmer Earth rug is made from a blend of jute, cotton and wool and hand-loomed in India by local artisans. Its textured tones are ideal for a coastal home or holiday house, while the abstract pattern adds interest and texture.

To keep your rug in good condition, rotate every six months to ensure even wear and tear. Regular vacuuming on a low setting will prevent dirt and dust build-up without harming the wool fibres.

Mix it up with playful patterns and colours

Elevate the look of any room with a white rug peppered with an eye-catching pattern. The Amsterdam rug comes in a choice of sweet polka dots or a unique, nomadic-inspired print, making it a fun centrepiece for a boho or eclectic aesthetic.

Made from durable polypropylene, it’s built to last and is easy to maintain. A simple vacuum is all you need to keep it looking as vibrant as when you first laid it out – just skip the spinning brush to avoid any potential damage to the fibres.

Similar to the array of mattress options available – memory foam, pocket spring, or a hybrid of both – mattresses also come in various sizes to suit your bedroom, needs and preferences.

The post The best memory foam mattresses to (literally) sink into appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
If there’s one thing we all come to learn in adulthood it’s this: never underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep – or, for that matter, the power of a bed that helps us achieve that. Enter: the memory foam mattress.

While springs have long dominated the sleep industry, the last ten years or so have seen the growth of memory foam in the form of pillows, toppers and mattresses – and there’s good reason for its popularity surge. Originally created by NASA to improve the seat cushioning and crash protection of astronauts, it’s fair to say that memory foam (aka temper or viscoelastic foam) provides something close to ultimate comfort, with many likening it to sleeping on a cloud or floating.

Although the thought of jumping from mattress to mattress in the nearest department store as you awkwardly dodge the staff is not in the least a cheerful one, there is some knowledge you can arm yourself with beforehand to ensure you’re finding the best memory foam mattress possible.

Memory foam vs spring: signs you’re ready to make the switch

While innerspring mattresses have been around for years, foam mattresses have gone through some major breakthroughs. But how do you know when it’s time to make the switch?

According to Koala’s Product Design Manager, Alexandra Owen, sleep is very personal. “If you’re bothered by your spring mattress making noise, sagging, or transferring motion it might be time to consider swapping to a memory foam mattress.”

Another big factor in making the switch to a memory foam mattress is couple sleeping. Don’t we all know (and hate) the feeling of experiencing a bad night’s sleep because our partner is, too? Turns out, some of us know it all too well – 50 per cent of us, in fact! “A supportive mattress plays a huge part when it comes to a good night’s sleep, as it can help you to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. If you’re being woken up by your partner at night, it’s probably a sign to move to a mattress with non-disturbance technology and zonal support, both of which a memory foam mattress provides.”

What to look for in a memory foam mattress

With the rise of the mattress in a box trend and oh-so many outlets to browse, finding your perfect fit matress-wise can be a slippery slope to overwhelm. So, before you take the plunge and embark on the journey, educate yourself with a bit of mattress knowledge to simplify the process.

Unsurprisingly, you should start by asking yourself how you sleep and your sleeping positions. “If you tend to sleep hot, cooling technologies such as COOLMAX fibres help regulate heat and moisture, as well as breathability. Adaptive foam springs (yep, best of both worlds) provide pressure relief, and support you where you need it,” says Alexandra.

Do you love a side of sustainability with your sleep? Don’t we all – and increasingly so! Luckily mattress companies are catering to those of us who are planet-forward in our thinking – look for GECA-certifications or mattresses produced with a small ecological footprint.

Finally, choosing the right mattress is all about what works for you – even if that changes from day-to-day. That’s where customisability comes in. You’ll find that many memory foam mattresses offer the opportunity to customise in the form of removable layers or flippable cushioning, allowing you to transform them from medium-firm to firm with the literal flick of a wrist. “Rotating your memory foam mattress regularly can also help improve its lifespan, as it helps keep the comfort and foam layers evenly distributed.”

Frequently asked questions

If you’re on a search to find the best memory foam mattress for your needs, these are some of the common questions you might encounter.

What are the different types of memory foam?

Traditional Memory Foam

Traditional memory foam mattresses are made from polyurethane that moulds to the contours of your body. Traditional memory foam has been around for decades, and most memory foam mattresses are still made in a similar way.

Traditional memory foam reacts to the heat and pressure of your body to relieve pressure points. It is more supportive and spongey, however, it is known to trap more heat than other types such as gel infused memory foam mattresses, so it isn’t recommended for hot sleepers.

Open Cell Memory Foam

Perfect for hot sleepers, open cell memory foam allows air to flow freely within the material so you’ll stay cool throughout the evening. It’s less dense in comparison to traditional memory foam.

Gel Memory Foam

Gel infused memory foam mattresses features gel microbeads within to create an even more breathable material. Gel beads wick away body heat so you’ll have a restful night’s sleep.

How thick should a memory foam mattress be?

The thickness of your mattress depends on the type of sleeper you are. Generally, 8-12 inches is advised for back and stomach sleepers, while 12-20 inches are recommended for side sleepers.

How long will a memory foam mattress last?

A quality memory foam mattress can last up to 10 years, so when searching for the best memory foam mattress to invest in, ensure the brand and model has a warranty period of 10 years or more.

When it comes to creating the perfect sanctuary-like bedroom, opting for a bed frame that suits your style and space is key. As the central feature of the room, selecting the right design won’t only set assist you in having a great night’s sleep but it will also set the tone of your space.

Below, we explore some ideas that will assist you in better selecting the perfect bed frame for your home and some great options currently on the market.

How important is buying the right bed frame for your mattress?

The bed frame that you buy will ultimately have an effect on the longevity of your mattress and your overall comfort while sleeping. “A design that ensures breathability and airflow is key for a long lasting and functioning mattress,” says Koala Product Designer, Adam Harrigan.

From a technical perspective, it’s obviously crucial that the frame provides a suitable support platform for your mattress. “This ensures that the mattress does not sink in and can breathe,” says Adam.

A foam mattress for example suits a very rigid platform that can offer maximum breathability and structural stability.

What should you look for when buying a bed frame?

Adam Harrigan suggests considering each of the following elements:

 • Functionality: Your bed frame needs to be sturdy and supportive. Bed frames that move around and make noise aren’t ideal.
 • Size and height: It might seem obvious, but making sure you know your bedroom’s measurements and checking the bed frame size is crucial when deciding on which bed you can fit. Beyond bed size, height plays an important role. Lower bed frames tend to feel more inviting and open, whereas higher and bigger bed frames are more of a standout piece.
 • Materials used: Depending on your style and your space, one of the three materials that dominate the market will best suit you: timber, upholstery or metal. Check what your frame is specifically made from and try to opt for higher grade materials.
 • Storage space: Whether it’s under the bed or behind the bed head, storage space is a great addition to have, especially for those with smaller bedrooms.
 • Longevity: If possible, it’s worth investing in a design that will stand the test of time. Manufacturers of high-quality furniture make sure that the inner structure up to the fabrics can take heavy pressure for a longer time, therefore bringing more comfort to you.

10 of the best blenders for all budgets and uses https://www.homestolove.com.au/shopping/best-blenders-australia-22037/ Fri, 10 May 2024 07:20:24 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/best-blenders-australia-22037 Smoothies, sauces and soups have never been so smooth.

The post 10 of the best blenders for all budgets and uses appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
From icy cold fruit smoothies and frappes to smooth sauces and purees, the culinary capabilities of a quality blender are endless. However, the operative word here is ‘quality’, because when you have an old, bulky blender that can barely crush ice anymore, your options are limited to lumpy sauces and smoothies.

Fortunately, there’s a range of great blenders on the market today to suit a variety of kitchen needs and budgets, which is both great and a little overwhelming. Let us break it down for you.

What are the different types of blenders?

There are three main types of blenders: countertop blenders, immersion blenders and personal blenders.

The countertop blender has the motor beneath the jar and tends to be on the bulkier side, while an immersion blender, otherwise known as a hand blender, stick blender or wand mixer, is a hand-held appliance comprised of an arm with blades at the end. Personal blenders, also known as bullet blenders or portable blenders (if they are indeed portable), are like the traditional countertop iteration on a much smaller scale, making them, as the name suggests, ideal for personal use rather than making multiple servings.

Outside of the three main types of blenders, you also have your food processors and high-tech multi-cookers, which typically offer good blending capabilities too.

In short: if you love making smoothies and protein shakes, you’ll want a compact personal blender. If you want to whip up delicious soups, consider opting for an immersion blender. Or, if you want a versatile and powerful kitchen workhorse, there’ll be a food processor for that too.

Ready to upgrade your tired blender? Here are some of the best that suit a variety of purposes and budgets on the market right now, including our top three picks for smoothies.

When it comes to creating the perfect living room space there are many styling mistakes to avoid, from placing your television at the wrong angle, to choosing an uncomfortable sofa.

The living room ranks second only to the bedroom when it comes to time spent, but with the added bonus of being able to comfortably share the space with all of your family and friends. As such, ensuring you style and furnish it to perfection is of paramount importance.

The key to nailing your living room is to focus your thoughts on functionality. If you’re watching the television regularly as a family, you’ll want to make sure you have enough seating for every member of the household and then some, and that you’ll be able to watch in comfort from every angle for extended periods of time.

If you’re a regular reader, you may want to think about adding a desk lamp or floor lamp to ensure you’ll be able to comfortably read throughout the night. And, if you have furry friends, you’ll want to make sure your seating options will be able to stand the test of time and claws.

To help you create the perfect space, we’ve pulled together 19 of the best modern living room ideas.

Inside Out’s most popular modern living room ideas

The living room of this renovated Victorian worker’s cottage in Fitzroy enjoys a light-filled outlook and easy functionality provided by floating shelves and built-in joinery.

Not many homes boast a living room as impressive as the one in this renovated 1860s terrace. A built-in sofa gives the illusion of a sunken lounge, playing into the home’s slight mid-century lean and providing the functionality necessary for its narrow footprint.

Mid-century rules in the living area of this retro-cool home in northern Illawarra. A pitched ceiling with exposed timber-toned beams makes the perfect pairing for the velvet lime-hued sofa, which has been covered with cushions in bright tones and playful patterns.

Sophisticated and sleek, the living room of this renewed 1930s Scandi style home is full of clean lines, architectural elements and luxurious finishes. The cedar cladding is offset by the white-face linear bricks, and the entire space is lit by generous almost floor-to-ceiling windows.

The living room of this Queenslander workers’ cottage acts as an extension of the outdoor zone – and vice versa. An off-the-floor coffee table and cut outs in the King Living sofa allow for uninterrupted sightlines to the garden, while the custom console provides plenty of storage.

Adorned with owner Annika’s artefacts and objects from a career in fashion, the living room of this revitalised Federation bungalow in Sydney is brimming with personality. Beyond this standpoint, the lush back garden and outdoor entertaining area opens up via bi-fold doors.

Indoor/outdoor flow, clever use of materiality, relaxed plush furniture and a timeless palette are the elements at play in this contemporary family house in Torquay. The Tasmanian oak timber-batten ceilings, a striking design feature, indulge owner Jane’s love of 1960s architecture and are an element that tie this room to other zones in the home.

Interior designer Melissa Bonney of The Designory sought to create the ultimate holiday home in Byron Bay and the end result is stunning. Subtle green hues are layered in this living room space to reference the Barefoot Bay Villa’s stunning natural surrounds.

This mid-century modern stone cottage in the Adelaide hills was lovingly revamped, with the exposed stone feature wall in the living room becoming a central highlight. Drawing colour cues from the stone wall, a tan leather sofa is paired with soft blue cushions for contrast.

Interior designer Kristy McGregor injected her own version of coastal cool in her renovated Bondi abode and the end result is stunning. Seeking to maximise the natural light that enters from the kitchen, a circular mirror acts as both a visual feature and light amplifier.

Tasked with transforming this Sydney home into an entertainer’s dream with a modern rustic aesthetic, interior designer Jillian Dinkel added her signature style to the abode. In the living room exposed brick walls and the vaulted ceiling were painted white, with the trusses painted pitch black for a dramatic touch.

In the renovation of her Federation-style home, interior designer Jillian Dinkel painted the window trims throughout the home in Dulux Blue Metal. In the living room, the Samsung The Frame television takes pride of place over the original fireplace mantle.

This modern home in Booker Bay makes the most of its stunning natural views, and who can blame it? In the living room generous windows make sure you can see the water from almost every angle.

While her Sydney apartment maybe have been on the smaller side, interior designer Sophie Bowers of Strutt Studios pulled no punches when it came to transforming her abode. In the living room a statement rug clearly zones the living zone where a plush grey sofa is paired with a black leather armchair.

In the renovation of this Daylesford cottage, interior designer Suzanne Cunningham sought to retain its relaxed country feel in order to create the perfect weekender. In the living room a rich mix of textures from the brown leather sofa to the billowing curtains add a soft touch.

Seeking to create a dramatic feature in the living room of this fibro cottage, the fireplace is painted in a dark charcoal that pops against the stark white interiors that run throughout the home. A dark rug centers the living space and adds a warm contrast to the concrete flooring.

In the second living room of this nature-inspired home in Riverview a more relaxed approach to design and furnishing was taken. A built-in leather couch is the perfect place to lounge, and a built-in sideboard provides ample storage space.

In Alisa and Lysandra’s renovated heritage home in Melbourne the dynamic duo opted for ceiling to floor steel-framed glass doors for dramatic effect and to create a seamless indoor-outdoor connection.

It may be small, but this Queensland pool house has been transformed into the ultimate holiday stay. The compact living room is subtly zoned with a tactile rug and a vivid green velvet sofa is the centre of attention.

Linda, the owner of this country-style kitchen said she “wanted it to look like an old barn with a contemporary fit-out inside.”

Marble, with its timeless beauty and enduring appeal, has long been considered the height of luxury in modern kitchen design. With both aesthetic and practical qualities, it’s often the first thing that comes to most people’s minds when they imagine their ideal kitchen.

Real marble exudes a sense of sophistication and grandeur that few other materials can replicate. Its smooth, veined surface and lustrous finish create a visual impact that instantly elevates the overall look and feel of a kitchen. From a practical point of view, marble is exceptionally heat resistent and can handle pots and pans straight from the stovetop. It’s also cool to the touch, and naturally offers the perfect place to prepare your baked goods — even keeping dough at an optimal temperature while kneading.

When looked after well, marble will last for years to come without scratches, stains or signs of ageing. It also seamlessly slips into any interior aesthetic, from country to contemporary and beyond.

There are countless ways to incorporate this natural stone into your kitchen, both big and small. Whether it’s an entire wall, a smaller splashback, kitchen island bench or through your choice of decor. To help inspire you to make magic moments with marble in your kitchen, here are 10 spaces that have done exactly that.

10 magnificent marble kitchens

The low-sheen black cabinetry used in this kitchen in a contemporary new build in Brisbane is brought to life with a striking black and white marble island bench.

This kitchen in a newly built home on the Mornington Peninsula is all about clean lines and textural interest. The hero of the room is the black island bench in Pietra Del Cardosa marble.

Designed by David Hicks, this sleek white kitchen is a smart space that allows the gold tones in the marble island bench and splash back shine.

A counter topped in Super White Dolomite marble is mixed with a range of materials in this renovated heritage home in Sydney. They include Maculato porcelain tiles from Surface Gallery, cabinets in Murobond Tarnished Silver, timber and Porter’s Paints Vintage Blue.

Baltic White marble from Surface Gallery features as a waterfall countertop in the kitchen of this light-filled worker’s cottage in Paddington. The same stone in used elsewhere in the home, on the TV unit and in the bathrooms.

Traditional elements, such as marble surfaces are combined with modern black finishes and copper pendant lights in this renovated Victorian terrace.

The kitchen island in stone expert Adrian Zipevski’s home features a striking ribbed Zafiro Blue marble. “I had never before seen this stone utilised in a project in Australia so my new home had to be the first place for it,” he says, admitting he had slowly been aquiring the unique stone for over a year by the time he renovated his home.

The kitchen benchtop and splashback, in Arabescato Vagli marble from CDK Stone, make a striking statement in the open-plan area of this restored period home.

Calacatta Vagli from Marable was used for the kitchen benchtops in this renovated stonemason’s cottage in Paddington. “We felt this stone had a spectrum of tones to balance the sandstone wall, stainless steel cabinets and the travertine tiles,” explains Richard Huxley, the home owner and director of Huxley Architects.

Author, chef, food writer and TV presenter: Karen Martini is more than comfortable in the kitchen. And hers is exactly as wonderful as one would imagine.

Four (yes, four) customised ovens, slideable track lighting for flexibility and three dishwashers render her kitchen more than capable of handling the charcuterie and Chablis that are consumed within when she puts on a spread for guests.

Here, Karen Martini talks us through what she loves about her kitchen design.

Karen Martini is transforming her St Kilda restaurant ‘Saint George’ into ‘The Kindness Kitchen’ for one day only on Thursday 6 June, 2024

In collaboration with Chobani and Foodbank, Karen will be hosting an unforgettable dining experience in her Melbourne restaurant to raise awareness and funds for Australians who don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

Guests will be treated to a culinary feast curated by Karen, as well as a bespoke dessert recipe using one of two limited time only flavours of Chobani yoghurt created in collaboration with Foodbank. All proceeds of the sales and the event will go to Foodbank; each limited edition tub purchased from Woolworths will equal 6 meals donated to those who need it most via Foodbank’s fruit and vegetable programs.

“Our special Kindness Kitchen menu will feature delicious seasonal local ingredients, featuring an exclusive dessert inspired by the Chobani x Foodbank yogurt, which is what both my cooking and our restaurant is all about,” says Karen.

The Kindness Kitchen

What appliances did you choose for this kitchen?

It was always a dream of mine to have a Wolf oven and stove. All the appliances here are Wolf. We have a double oven with gas burners, an iron flat top and grill. It’s all modular, so if you are talking to Wolf directly, as I was, you can mix and match to suit your needs. I also have a combination oven (convection and steam) and an induction top with three burners. Both convection ovens are about 120cm wide. Well worth it for me as I do a lot of baking, testing and cooking out of this kitchen. We have two large built-in Sub-Zero fridges. One is all fridge, and the other is a fridge and freezer. We also have a wine fridge in the butler’s pantry and an ice machine.

How do you use the four ovens?

We have two lower convection ovens under the cooktop range, but then also the combination convection and steam, which is an in-wall oven that I have below the main bench. You can put it up higher, but when we were designing the kitchen we decided that we didn’t want any above-bench shelving, so the line of the kitchen was all waist height and below. I’ve done minimal baking in the combination convection and steam oven. I’ve steamed whole legs of lamb in it and then roasted them. I’ve made dumplings and steamed vegetables and rice. It is a beautiful appliance, but it isn’t second nature to me… it doesn’t come naturally.

Was there anything brought over from your time working in commercial kitchens?

We have three dishwashers in our kitchen: a large Siemens dishwasher for all the heavy-duty pots and pans, and then two Fisher & Paykels with drawers that are going constantly. We talked about having one of those whizbang amazing glass washers that do a 90-second wash. We probably should have installed it in the butler’s pantry, but just couldn’t stretch to it then and are still thinking about installing one, mainly because we do a lot of entertaining.

ON ISLAND BENCH Petal ceramic sculpture by Kirsten Perry, Pépite. Mortar and pestle, bowls, copper bucket and her new Cook book, all Karen’s.

ON TABLE Ceramic plates by Karen’s daughter. Cream ceramic plate and spoon, Shelley Panton. LagunaB ‘Fantasia’ tumbler, Maison de Vacances ‘Mimi Vichy’ napkins and tablecloth in Cactus, all Pan After.

What about your lighting, storage and material choices?

We have track lighting, where we can slide the lamp anywhere we like, even change the angle. We couldn’t pinpoint the lighting prior to having the kitchen done, because it’s very difficult to work out where you’ll spend most of your time working – although I do know it’s the triangle between the stove and the main benchtop. I would never do fixed lighting in the ceiling now because we like the flexibility. For storage, everything is under the counters; it’s all drawers, with cupboards on the front side of the main service bench. The main bench also has four seats on the end, which was important for bench entertaining and because it is the heart of the house. Everyone gravitates here; no matter which door they come in, they all end up here. Our bench height is higher than the average bench – it sits just above my waist. I also increased the width of the space between the benches because we had the space and I didn’t want it to be a tight shuffle. And really, you need a place to dance and spin! But at no stage was I going to put a sink in the main bench area. I really am opposed to looking into a sink when entertaining. Guests don’t want to see you spraying down a chopping board, so we have a double sink in the back. I also think waste and rubbish in the kitchen is important, because you want to recycle and have a green waste. It is something that people just forget about and put under the kitchen sink, but it’s nowhere near enough room. When you think about the room you might need, I suggest doubling it.

ON BACK WALL Sharon Alpren striped bowl, Pépite. Scallop vase in Snowy Plum, Jardan. Fiona Scanlan white vase, Pan After. Ella Bendrups ceramic sculpture and Emily Ellis black vase, both Pépite. Ceramic plate by Karen’s daughter.

What does entertaining look like at your place?

Usually a bit of charcuterie, a few pickles, anchovy on toast or a shucked oyster here and there… a quick glass of Chablis or a minerally white, then there could be something off the barbecue if the weather is even slightly warm. We will barbecue at the drop of a hat. We like cooking over flames and do start a proper fire, though we don’t have a gas barbecue yet and probably will have a mix when we put one in. You can’t beat that flavour.

Favourite kitchen essentials?

Good pans and a microplane. You need to invest in a couple of different sizes of pans because you can’t cook everything in a two-litre pot. A deep frypan is handy, and always buy bigger. Things burn in a small pot because they are piled on top of each other and the base cooks too fast. The microplane is just one of those great inventions. It grates things finely, and you can use it to make dishes like a quick tahini sauce: just grab a clove of garlic and a cup of plain yoghurt and grate the garlic straight onto the yoghurt with salt and pepper and oil and two tablespoons of tahini. It makes the best garlic sauce ever.

Were the recipes for your new book tested in here?

This kitchen has worked hard. It tested this book, and the two before that. We also shot the book here, plus we film TV as well. We can control the lighting, so it always has a bright airy feel. It is a working kitchen and great for entertaining.

One thing you’d change in this dream working kitchen?

I’d die for that 90-second washer!

The post 8 of the best washing machines for your home appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
A washing machine is one of the hardest workers in the home so when it comes to upgrading your unit, it’s important to find the right one for your household. To help you choose your next washing machine, we share our top picks of the best washing machines on the market, and what you should be looking for.

From high-tech machines with multiple settings to larger capacity units that speed up the clothes washing process, washing machines have come a long way over the past several years. As such, it’s important to know which design features and functions to prioritise when updating your laundry room.

Smaller households and apartments might consider a compact combo washer/dryer unit, but for busier households that seem to need to run a load of laundry almost constantly, separate units might be a better fit.

The 4 most important things to consider when choosing a washing machine

1. Size

An average washing machine is likely to have a capacity of around 6kg to 7kg, which should be enough for a family of four, but bigger can be better. Newer models like the Samsung AddWash Front Loader can hold a load of up to 16kg, while LG’s Wash Tower will comfortably fit up to 17kg of laundry.

“With a larger capacity family-friendly machine, you don’t have to do as many loads and you use less power, less water and, importantly, less time,” says Gary Brown, senior brand manager, home appliances at Harvey Norman.

In addition to laundry capacity, you should also make note of the dimensions of your machine – especially if you have a compact laundry space. A smaller internal capacity doesn’t always mean the washing machine itself is on the compact side, so make sure you bring out the measuring tape.

“Front loaders can be installed under a benchtop, or used as a work surface themselves, making them more space efficient, which is increasingly important given our increasingly high density living,” says Choice team leader of whitegoods, Ashley Iredale.

2. Efficiency

With more and more of us veering towards eco-friendly living, making sure your machine is both water and energy efficient can have a major impact on both your quarterly electricity and water bills, as well as your environmental footprint.

“As front loaders work by picking up your clothes and repeatedly dropping them into the wash water they can get away with using very little water,” says Ashley. Top loaders may be easier to access but require more water and energy. “A toploader may be easier to access and will generally have a shorter cycle time, but will also use much more water than a front loader and be harsher on your clothes,” says Ashely.

“The energy consumption is rated with stars,” says Gary. “Premium brands can be four or four and a half stars, and that’s the gold standard.”

3. Noise

This is important if your machine is located in or near your living area or bedrooms. “The best machines have extra insulation or a dampener system for noise reduction,” says Gary.

If noise is an unavoidable issue, it might be worth looking into smarter washing machine units that you can start remotely from your phone. Being able to run a washing cycle while you’re out of the house is an easy way to avoid any noisy disturbance.

4. Smart tech

Washing machines just keep getting smarter and smarter, with newer models adding clever features that make them fit seamlessly into a smart home set up with ease.

LG’s newer machines, for example, come with LG’s ThinQ technology which will let you start and monitor cycles from your phone, while also allowing you to monitor your energy and water consumption.

Another important factor to look for is cycles that suit your lifestyle – newer machines have specific cycles for activewear and a steam-based refresh cycle, which can save on dry-cleaning.

Ashley at Choice warns us of not paying for technology you won’t genuinely be using. “Modern washing machines can offer a cornucopia of fancy features and cavernous capacity but they come at a cost, so if you’re not going to use wi-fi connectivity, steam functions, or enough space for a week’s worth of washing for a football team then don’t pay for them. “

The post The best coffee pod machines for every budget appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Automatic coffee pod machines aren’t a new thing but they’ve come a long way in terms of technology, design and sustainability since their inception.

Australia’s love affair with good coffee isn’t a new thing either however, there has been a boom in benchtop coffee machines – especially capsule machines – with more people working, socialising and caffeinating at home than ever before.

“We have seen a rise in capsule coffee machine sales – simply because people were looking to become their own at-home barista,” says John Kozsik, National Training Manager (Australia) at Lavazza. “Good quality capsule coffee machines are super convenient, simple to use and easy to clean – great for someone seeking café-grade coffee from their own kitchen!”

So, if you want to make great tasting coffee at home, but don’t have the time or confidence to master a manual espresso machine, a capsule coffee machine is what you need. Here, we ask the experts what to look for when purchasing a new machine and how to make a great tasting coffee.

What to look for when buying a coffee pod machine

With so many different brands and styles of capsule coffee machines on the market, you may feel overwhelmed when it comes to choosing the best machine for your budget and taste.

“Knowing what you want to spend is a great place to start, as it saves you time otherwise spent researching machines outside of your range,” says Mitch Monaghan, Nespresso Coffee Ambassador. “It’s worth noting that an expensive machine does not guarantee a quality coffee. A good entry-level home espresso machine can potentially create the perfect cup,” adds Mitch.

The way you drink your coffee should also be considered when shopping for a machine. “If you’re a black coffee fanatic, you would go for an espresso machine over one with many milk functions. On the other hand, if you’re a latte or cappuccino drinker you’ll be after a machine with a great milk frother included,” says John.

If you don’t enjoy installing or learning how to use new technology, look for machines with clear and simple controls. “Vertuo Next can be operated using just one button, while the Creatista range all come with an automatic steam wand so you can produce barista quality milks, hands-free!” says Mitch.

How to make a great tasting coffee from a coffee pod machine

According to John, it’s all about extraction speed when it comes to making good coffee.

“If you’re in the market for a pod coffee machine, you’ll want to consider purchasing a machine that extracts a coffee shot in around 20 to 30 seconds, rather than 10 seconds, says John. “This slower extraction will give you a superior espresso by far, just like the one your barista makes at your favourite café.”

It’s also important to ensure you’re starting with high-quality coffee. You may want to explore a variety of roasts and blends to find your favourite.

Lastly, make sure your machine is clean and descaled properly.

Thankfully, these days used coffee pods are recyclable, but that doesn’t mean you can just throw them in the yellow bin. The best way to recycle your empty pods is through drop-off and post-back collection schemes like those run by Terracycle. Nespresso runs its own recycling program allowing you to return your used aluminium capsules to a Nespresso boutique or post your used capsules back to Nespresso using a special Australia Post satchel. You can also them off at a participating collection point or through a bulk recycling collection initiatives where workplaces or community locations can become a recycling point.
