Though renovating your home is always an exciting time, fitting out your bathroom is arguably one of the most stressful (and expensive) parts.

Achieving a timeless aesthetic is just as important as the functionality of the space. From figuring out the perfect layout to choosing the right fittings and fixtures, each design decision requires careful thought and research to ensure you create the bathroom of your dreams – and one that won’t date before you’ve even had a chance to settle in.

From timeless tapware designs to simple styling ideas, these luxurious updates are guaranteed to give your bathroom timeless appeal.

1. Eye-catching accessories

Cool white marble and ample natural light create a calming atmosphere in this space. Gunmetal tapware, paired with sleek black hardware, contrasts beautifully with the marble countertop and highlights the dark tones in the terrazzo flooring.

2. Open shower space

Historically, shower spaces have been compact and closed off, taking up just enough space to be functional without imposing on the rest of the bathroom. More recently, the open-plan, resort-style shower is experiencing a surge in popularity. Consider an open floor plan and walk-in shower to maximise the size of your bathroom, as well as effortlessly modernising the space.

3. Bespoke window coverings

Privacy is crucial in a bathroom, and it’s important to weigh up whether your choice of window coverings can withstand the moisture levels in this particular space. For a quality finish and low-maintenance window covering, Australian Made Luxaflex® PolySatin® Shutters are the classic solution. Ideal for wet areas such as bathrooms and laundries, they are backed with a 20-year warranty.

4. Excess mirrors

It’s one of the oldest design tricks in the book, but incorporating multiple mirrors into a room will make any space feel larger. Mirrored cabinetry in a bathroom looks chic and, let’s face it, you can never have too much face-level storage or room to do your hair and make-up.

Mirrors help to bounce light around a room and make the space feel bigger. (Photo: Faucet Strommen)

5. Statement taps

There is a wide range of different tapware finishes on offer these days — from brass to rose gold, gunmetal, chrome, matte black and more — and while aesthetics are certainly a consideration, it’s also important to keep in mind the longevity of the design. While brass and matte black tapware have been popular in the past few years, chrome has made a recent resurgence and is touted as the most timeless of finishes.

6. Natural textures

If you’re looking to create a minimalist, streamlined look in your bathroom without it feeling sterile, be sure to inject warmth by incorporating natural materials such as timber or textured stone. In this instance, the custom timber vanity provides some much-needed relief from the crisp white walls while adding to the contemporary coastal aesthetic.

7. Indoor greenery

Incorporating[indoor plants into your bathroom has to be the easiest and most affordable way to turn the space into a lush and luxe oasis. Whether it’s a small fern or a statement fiddle-leaf fig, a suitable plant will add a verdant pop of colour to any wet area.

Plants not only look great in your wet spaces but can also have added health benefits. (Photography: Maree Homer)

Budgeting for a bathroom renovation is no easy task. You need to consider how much money you want to spend, the cost of new bathroom accessories, and how to achieve a look that’s both family-friendly and attractive. And this doesn’t even include organising your tradies and accounting for any issues with your timeline.

After all, bathrooms are no longer just functional spaces. They’re retreats, places for pampering, and some are not unlike day spas in their luxury touches and finishes. So, how much does a bathroom renovation cost? Here’s how to create a bathroom you’ll want to spend time in — whatever your budget.

Custom-made elements such as the custom mirror in this renovated Queenslander’s powder room can raise costs.

How much does a bathroom renovation cost?

The golden question: how much should you spend on a bathroom renovation? Well, how long is a piece of string? A number of factors come into play when planning a bathroom reno, such as room size, cost of materials, hardware, permits and labour. It can also come down to design specifics: are you installing a bath? Floor-to-ceiling tiles? A custom-made vanity?

According to HiPages, this can mean a range from anywhere between $8000 and $35000, or more. Plus, a 10-20 per cent buffer should be allowed for. However, stats released by the ABS suggest that people are generally spending less, with the value of total building approvals falling 5.9 per cent in March 2023.

Sometimes, builders will quote per square metre for renovations. HiPages suggests that this can fall somewhere between $2300 and $4600 per square metre for a bathroom, but again, it really depends on the materials and specs you’ve opted for.

The per square metre rule

Low-cost bathroom renovation

BUDGET: $2000 to $7000

Put down the tiling tool kit. As you have probably guessed, there is not a lot of room in this price bracket for remodelling and you’ll almost certainly have to keep all of your plumbing and electrics in place. But there are still plenty of affordable updates to try. “You can paint the tiles, change the vanity, update shower accessories and sometimes even paint the bath,” according to Oscar Merhebi from Eternity Kitchens and Bathrooms.

If you want to add some new accessories, go for a new toilet roll holder, mixer taps, a fresh vanity, or a new shower head. It’s also important to pay attention to clean lines and continuity, according to owner of Interiors By Cason, Noelene Cason. “Wall-mounted vanities with drawers create clean lines and provide good storage, while shaving cabinets are good for storage and easy to access,” says Noelene. “Look around for ex-demo showroom stock items for savings.” She also adds that extractor fans and heat lamps are also a must in every bathroom, as are LED downlights, which are reasonably priced these days.

Tiling part-way up the wall instead of floor-to-ceiling can help to save bathroom reno costs, like in the bathroom of this Scandi-style home.

(Photography: Simon Whitbread | Styling: Natalie Johnson)

Mid-range bathroom renovation

BUDGET: $8000 to $16,000.

Bigger jobs, such as ripping out old tiles and replacing them with chic new ones, are doable in this price bracket. “What it really comes down to is the accessories you choose, what brand you want to use and how lavish you want to be,” says Oscar. “The cost of accessories are scalable though.”

At this price point you can start to incorporate a little luxury. “Frameless and semi-frameless shower screens create a feeling of clean lines and space,” says Noelene. “Introduce a feature tile for a section of one wall or a whole wall depending on cost, either within the shower or behind the vanity.”

“Wall lights placed either side of the vanity mirror bring elegance to a room, while in-wall cisterns for toilet suites are a great way of creating more floor space,” she adds. “If the room allows for it, standalone or back-to-the-wall baths creates style and luxury.”

A larger bathroom, such as this beautiful blue one, will require a bigger budget: more tiles, more plumbing, more space to fill.

Luxury bathroom renovation

BUDGET $16,000 to $45,000+

The luxury bathroom budget is a thing of a beauty, with large demolition projects, total layout changes and complete overhauls now possible.

“You can add more features like heated floors, a spa bath, additional lighting and any other trimmings you think will make your bathroom luxe,” says Oscar. “You can start to look at big brands, such as Dorf, and some higher-end features, such as free-standing baths, which can cost around $12,000 alone.”

This is also the time to opt for luxury materials, such as porcelain or stone tiles or glass mosaics as feature walls, or adding in extras like heated towel rails or underfloor heating. You could also go for custom-designed vanities, with either marble or stone tops and wash basins.

“Built-in LED strip lighting also creates mood lighting and illuminates floors for night lighting,” says Noelene. “Depending on the size of the bathroom and its windows, dressing the window with either sheer curtains, blinds or shutters will bring a feeling of indulgence to the space.”

How much does each trade cost for a bathroom reno?

 • PLUMBING: Expect to pay a call out fee of between $60 and $100, and hourly rates between $100 and $150.
 • TILING: Tiling can range from between $35 and $120 per square metre – not including the cost of the tiles themselves.
 • BATH INSTALLATION Plumbers charge $350 upwards to replace and fit a bath.
 • SHOWER SCREEN INSTALLATION A basic shower screen will set you back around $400 for installation, but frameless can cost up to $600.
 • WATERPROOFING: This can cost anywhere between $500 and $750 for an average-sized bathroom.

The Block’s Tom and Sarah-Jane transformed their shed into a stylish guest studio https://www.homestolove.com.au/rooms/bathrooms-laundry/the-block-tom-and-sarah-jane-lake-eildon-studio-renovation/ Wed, 14 Feb 2024 06:05:39 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=246006 And it’s full of their signature luxe country charm.

The original plan was to use the prize money they won on The Block to renovate their holiday home in Victoria’s Lake Eildon (where they also own a caravan), but unfortunately for Tom and Sarah-Jane, things didn’t quite work out that way.

Known for their bold style and proclivity for hard yakka (plus a nice $20,000 package from Beaumont Tiles), they decided to do it anyway. Three months’ worth of weekends and any spare time were spent at the property they’ve owned for five years, located three-and-a-half hours from Melbourne’s CBD.

Tom did a lot of the work himself – along with the help of Sharon and Ankur and Leah and Ash’s tilers from The Block, Imperial Tiling – and Sarah-Jane styled the space in the signature luxe-country look that saw the couple win room after room on The Block 2022.

Before and after: the space is unrecognisable after Tom and Sarah-Jane transformed it with their signature luxe-country style.

The house on the site was formerly rented out, but the couple decided to transform the two-storey shed into a stylish studio space for friends and family to stay in. The large bedroom is now wrapped in wainscoting, while a feature wall in a soft striped Grafico wallpaper makes the tonal bedding pop.

A wood-burning fireplace in the corner will ensure guests stay warm in the cooler climate and reminds us of the cosy and character-filled master bedroom they delivered on The Block. “How much does it hug you as soon as you walk in?” we can hear judge Shaynna Blaze saying.

Tom and Sarah-Jane picked a vanity from Beaumont Tiles and had it sprayed in Dulux’s Harpoon.

Dividing the large space into two, they were also able to add the biggest bathroom you’ve ever seen to the space. A toilet and shower are neatly tucked behind an opulent double vanity in the middle of the room, while a round bathtub sits by the window, so you can soak up the gorgeous views of the surrounding mountain ranges while you, well…soak.

The wainscoting continues in this space, which oozes Sarah-Jane’s modern country charm: sparkly chandelier and bold patterned floor tiles and all. Sheers delicately drape over the wall of windows, while the elevated position provides plenty of privacy.

Up next: they plan to renovate the main house on the same block, as well as make updates to their home in Melbourne. You can follow more of their journey at @tomandsarahjane.

Here’s where to shop the look

Navy Emily velvet bed

From $429 (usually $499), Temple & Webster

Boasting a hint of glamour with its velvet finish, rich colour and gold accents, this bedframe sets the tone in Tom and Sarah-Jane’s studio bedroom.

Grafico stripe linen wallpaper in Dusty Rose

$70-77/sqm, The Block Shop

Available in a textured canvas or smooth matte finish, this striped wallpaper from Grafico is super sweet and subtle and connects perfectly with the dusty pink paint colour found in the studio bathroom.

Brampton House Portland cushion in Charcoal

$12 (usually $20), Spotlight

Sarah-Jane has a knack for styling a bed that looks inviting and comfortable, and she’s used a few statement cushions from Spotlight in this room. While this isn’t the same as the pink stripe cushion she used, it’s a similar vibe.

Eden cotton bed sheets in Eggplant

From $80, Sheet Society

The bed has been styled in a tonal palette with dusty pinks, rich navy blues and these dark purple bed sheets. Available in a soft cotton or linen finish, you can buy them as a set or individually.

‘Sagittarius’ by Elle Pervez

$190, Bluethumb

There are two of Elle Pervez’s beautiful artworks hanging in the bedroom, both featuring zodiac constellations. They were selected because Tom and Sarah-Jane love how many stars you can see from the studio’s balcony at night in Lake Eildon.

Two-piece Smith marble nesting coffee table set

$549 (usually $599), Temple & Webster

Styled between two pink velvet chairs Sarah-Jane sourced from Facebook Marketplace, this nesting table set ties in with the other gold accents in the space and is the perfect place for setting down a morning coffee.

Cassidy decorative matt porcelain tile in Cloud

$134.75/sqm, Temple & Webster

Tom and Sarah-Jane chose a floor tile from Beaumont Tiles in the pattern Verona Gravity Matt, which they used in the entry hallway and bathroom. It’s an easy way to infuse a more traditional style in a modern way, and this tile from Temple & Webster will give you the same look if you’re shopping online.

brass-taps

Morgan Rund bath/basin wall mixer set in Brushed Gold

$499, Temple & Webster

Gold touches feature throughout the bedroom and bathroom, adding to the opulent style of the space. While Tom and Sarah-Jane chose the Misha wall basin set in Brushed Gold from Beaumont Tiles, if you’re looking to shop online, this set is similar and comes in a variety of finishes.

beaumont-marble-tile

09

Kensington brick ice mosaic tile in White

$43.57/sheet, Beaumont Tiles

Tom and Sarah-Jane opted for this smaller subway tile from Beaumont Tiles to style above their vanity. With a marble-like look and soft veining, it beautifully accentuates the grey pattern tiles on the floor.

A buyer’s guide to finding the best shower head https://www.homestolove.com.au/renovating/best-shower-heads-10411/ Tue, 23 Jan 2024 03:00:00 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/best-shower-heads-10411 Fittings that combine performance and water-efficiency will help you start the day with a smile.

The post A buyer’s guide to finding the best shower head appeared first on Homes To Love.

Today’s showers are smarter, better-looking and more powerful than ever – all while offering impressive water efficiency. It’s all about the experience, says Andy Grigor, group head of design and innovation at Methven.

No matter what style or size bathroom, there’s a shower for you. There are handheld showers that allow you to wash the kids or dog with ease; streamlined rail showers; twin showers (hand and wall-mounted showers in the one unit); standard overhead models; and thermostatic showers that give you control over spray pattern, water flow and temperature at the touch of a button.

Photo: Cathy Schusler

Prices vary according to the model, finish and features you choose. “You can pay from $29 to $2900,” says Daniela Santilli, marketing leader at Reece.

“Flush-mounted ceiling showers with no visible arms or brackets are ideal for creating a sleek, minimalist look in your bathroom,” says Maria Roussos, interior designer and owner of Schemes & Spaces. “If practicality is a priority, opt for an adjustable rail shower – it can be set to different heights, and it’s great for cleaning the shower enclosure.” For flexibility, you can’t beat a twin shower, says Christina Karas, operations and marketing coordinator at Harvey Norman Bathroom & Tiles. “They’re our most popular style as they give you an overhead rain-shower feel as well as a handheld shower for those times when you don’t want to wet your hair.”

Photo: Tom Ferguson

“Showers in 2020 are all about personalisation and technology,” adds Santilli. “Customisation continues to be a trend, with Australians wanting more control over their showering experience.” Adjustable showerhead controls allow you to choose a gentle rain shower or massage spray, a focused jet to ease tired muscles, or a cascading waterfall effect.

And you no longer have to choose between water efficiency and a powerful, invigorating shower. “Shower technologies have evolved to make better use of water, which means we’re able to create an amazing experience at nine litres per minute that feels like 22 litres per minute,” says Grigor. Showerheads that incorporate air technology are the ones to look for, says René London, national sales manager at Bathe. “These draw air into the showerhead and mix it with water to create a fuller and more luxurious shower.”

Photo: Alexander McIntyre

While chrome continues to be a popular finish, it’s far from the only option. “Showers in brushed nickel, aged brass, bronze and gunmetal are all guaranteed to make a statement,” says Roussos. “We’re also seeing marble details on mixers that can coordinate with feature tiles for real wow factor.”

Shape-wise, soft, square and organic lines are trending, says Santilli. But looks aren’t the only consideration, says Grigor. “Shape dictates the spray geometrics and water coverage. Round showerheads typically provide even and balanced spray coverage. If you prefer more spray across the back and shoulders, it’s worth considering a rectangular model, which has a wider spray pattern.” Bigger isn’t necessarily better: large showerheads spread the spray wider so it feels lighter and more rain-like on the body.

Photo: Nicole England

Quality varies, so be sure to ask a few questions prior to purchasing. “Find out what the shower’s internals are made from – ceramic and brass are far superior to plastic,” says Nicole Body, product manager at Rogerseller. “Also determine how the product is finished – powdercoat, PVD or electroplate. PVD is great because it won’t scratch or fade. Spray force is another important factor, so ask to see the shower in action.” And don’t forget the all-important touch test, adds Grigor. “Picking up the product and feeling it in your hands gives an indication of the quality.” Now, the biggest challenge will be managing the queue for a morning shower.

A beautiful bathroom doesn’t have to be huge. But when it comes to giving this important room serious panache, the vanity — the sink and cabinetry — is a way to create a focal point with style. It’s an easy tweak if you don’t want to go ripping up tiles in a reno, or it can play a major role in the new look you’re going to achieve.

The bathroom vanity is a crucial and functional hub by which we can perform our daily tasks. A bathroom cabinet provides valuable storage, and a vanity goes a long way to establishing the overall look of the bathroom. After all, even the most stylish bathrooms can be defeated by a common foe: the clutter created by bottles, soaps, toothbrushes, makeup and other toiletries left out on every available surface.

You can bet on red in this bathroom (specifically Dulux’s ‘Red Wine’). The curves of the custom vanity soften the look, as well as the peach basin by Nood. A brass tap from Phoenix Tapware matches the mirror frame, injecting some glamour, while coloured terrazzo tiles from Signorino add to the sense of fun.

(Photography: Martina Gemmola | Styling: Ruth Welsby)

The bathroom vanity gives us as chance to be creative, even without doing an entire bathroom renovation. You can either reflect the look of your entire home, or go a little out-there and do something different. You can add a striking stone or go for architectural curves or a cantilevered sink.

Many retailers have plenty of ready-to-install vanity options, or you can tweak the look, colour, benchtop material, and hardware according to your style. Or you can choose something a little more custom and then top it with a vanity basin you love. Some designers put a spin on the vintage dresser, with a sink on top and the tapware installed on the wall.

What type of bathroom vanity is best?

There are vanities that hang on the wall and there are stone behemoths that take pride of place in the room. There are double sinks and single sinks and sinks that span the width of the vanity. Bathroom cabinet finishes, benchtop and taphole options, plus the basins themselves all help create an individuality as much as they contribute to the wildly varied cost of these essential items.

Wood-fronted cabinets were a popular choice for vanities in 2023, slightly topping the other favourite choice, white. According to ABI Interiors, white and gold together have maintained their status as one of the most quintessential bathrooms colours for an elegant and refined space.

If you would rather avoid cutting holes and mounting vanity cabinets to the wall, an easier option is to add a freestanding piece of furniture.

The bold combination of Calacatta Viola marble, pink stucco walls and brass fittings and fixtures create a sense of whimsy in this striking powder room designed by Alexandra Brown of Alexandra Brown Interiors.

How much should I expect to pay for a bathroom vanity?

The bathroom vanity can have a big impact and look great without a cost blowout, but it’s also possible to spend on one little room what others might spend on an entire house renovation. Materials, the cost of labour — think laying intricate tiles — and how much you have to undo before you actually start creating a new bathroom, all impact the final price.

A marble bathroom vanity creates a jewel-box effect, and can add a lot of personality to the room. But it comes at a cost. A more budget friendly alternative is a non-custom vanity unit for which you can choose from a series of pre-determined sizes and materials. In Australia, companies such as The Blue Space, ABI Interiors and IKEA offer excellent and more affordable vanity ideas.

We may not yet be mid-way through 2023, but in the world of interior design, eyes are firmly on what the new year will bring.

From paint colours and architecture styles to new sustainable tech and furniture finds, what’s ahead for our homes is already written in the stars – and by written in the stars, we really mean: is being dreamed up by some of the most innovative international design icons.

But what is on the horizon for the humble, functional space that is the bathroom? Are subway tiles still a thing? Arched mirrors? Freestanding baths? Without further ado, feast your eyes on four incredibly stylish wet zones that demonstrate some of the hottest bathroom trends for 2024.

1. GOING FOR OLD

Photography: Simon Whitbread

A bygone bathroom gets a clever current-day cleanse.

THE BRIEF: Designer Shantala Mack was tasked with updating a heritage-listed home in Sydney without losing its charm. “The clients previously lived in a modern apartment and, although they now had this gorgeous older home, they wanted the bathrooms to feel more modern than they did,” she explains.

THE MATERIALS: The goal was to modernise while retaining original character, and the vivid Colony ‘Marly’ wallpaper from Boyac fit the bill. A mirror was custom-made by Funktion Framing to look vintage while storage was concealed behind wallpaper panels. The glossy choice of the Statuario marble from Gitani Stone serves as a much-needed contrast to some of the other classic elements, including the wooden windows.

WHY IT WORKS

STORAGE Full-length cupboards wrap around the entire room, disguised by wallpaper.

HARDWARE Current meets classic with Brodware’s ‘Manhattan’ taps in Rome Bronze PVD.

ACCESSORIES The matching Winslow bath basket from Brodware elevates any soak.

2. COOL CONTRAST

Photography: Simon Whitbread

Simple grey is reimagined with unpredictable pairings.

THE BRIEF: “I wanted to do something you don’t see everywhere,” says Jacqui Hurwitz, director of Patina Design Studio, who took on the interiors for this new build in Sydney. However, it wasn’t easy to convince her client, who thought her design might look too busy. “They went with it and now say every time they see it that they’re so happy.”

THE MATERIALS: Far from pedestrian, the subway tiles from Josh Ray Ceramics are more like soldiers stomping along the walls. Against the fluid grey vein of the Laminam wall and vanity from Anterior XL, it’s a masterclass in contrast. The cool palette is balanced with wooden cabinetry. “Timber veneer was added to warm it up a bit,” Jacqui explains, “otherwise it would be way too stark with just the white, black and grey.”

WHY IT WORKS

3. TIME TRAVELLER

Photography: Cricket Saleh

This vacation-home ensuite cherry picks from a golden age.

THE BRIEF: Designer Amelda Wilde was tasked to transform a home from the 1980s into a dreamy yet durable holiday escape. “That set the stage for me to play with nostalgia,” she says. “I imagined a place with a record player on from breakfast to well past bedtime.”

THE MATERIALS: Every choice was intentionally cheerful but hard-wearing. “When I found the tiles, I just knew they would be perfect,” says Amelda of the rich-toned rectangles and magenta mosaics. Eye-catching Marble Hub sinks are teamed with Brodware taps and curved, goldtrimmed Pierre mirrors from Perth-based Granite Lane.

4. MY FAIR LADY

Photography: Simon Whitbread

Soft curves, warm wood and gold touches soothe the soul.

THE BRIEF: “The main bathroom was designed for the owners’ daughter and had a strict brief of no colour!” says interior designer Shantala Mack of this recent project. It needed to embrace function and femininity – all while cruising in neutral.

THE MATERIALS The overuse of white can stumble into too-stark territory, but Shantala avoided that by specifying a rendered tadelakt surface. Seen on the walls, shelves and even mirror (custom-made by Touchstone Constructions), it accentuates curves and softens the space. The grey-veined Statuario marble from MTI Stone injects elegance, and Brodware ‘Manhattan’ tapware in Roma Bronze brings warmth.

The post 21 of the best home renovation ideas to steal for yourself appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Once you’ve committed to the idea of creating the home of your dreams it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the seemingly countless ideas and endless decisions that need to be made.

Sure, at a surface level most homes will contain the bare-boned basics: a kitchen, bathroom, some bedrooms, and living and/or dining space. From there, it’s important to think about the smaller and bigger variations that you might want for your home. After all, renovating your home is no easy feat, and hopefully, you’ll only have to do it once to get it right.

To help you create the perfect home and really nail your next project, we’ve pulled together 21 of our favourite home renovation ideas to steal.

Up your street appeal with a fresh coat of paint

There’s no denying that an eye-catching exterior will immediately make a major impact on your home, so whether you prefer a dark and moody exterior, or a crisp white home, be sure to give your home’s facade a loving coat of paint to instantly freshen it up.

This original cornershop was given a grand millennial pink makeover, blending on-trend tones and new brass hardware with original window fittings and character features.

Make a bold statement with steel-frame windows and doors

One of the biggest interior design trends recently has been the resurgence in the popularity of steel-framed windows and doors. For those who love a lighter palette, the dark windows and doors can make a dramatic statement as well as a luxurious touch.

In this contemporary home, the steel-framed doors seamlessly blend with vertical timber elements, leading between indoor and outdoor spaces and allowing ample natural light to permeate through this Edwardian-come-contemporary-style house.

Photography: Anson Smart | Story: Belle

Bring some colour into your bathroom

The classic bathroom usually features liberal amounts of white tiles, a splash of marble or timber, and voilà! Make a feature of your bathroom space with the addition of colour, whether that’s through feature tiles, or even through statement tapware or lighting.

In this colourful Bondi Beach apartment, minty penny round tiles are paired with honed Carrara pencil tiles, Carrara floor tiles, and a Bentu ‘Hui’ terrazzo basin from Remodern plus a custom vanity by Greg Natale.

Photography: Brigid Arnott | Story: Country Style

Control the mess with a mud room

Usually located at a side or back entry, mudrooms add a practical punch to the home and can provide an aesthetic and emotional transition into the house itself.

In this French-inspired farmhouse on the NSW South Coast, a chic mudroom pairs plenty of storage space with a sweet pink door and gorgeously tiled floor.

Photography: Anson Smart | Story: Belle

Create an entertainer’s kitchen

Kitchen islands are fantastic places for the whole family to gather while also packing a striking visual punch. The kitchen is well and truly the heart of the home in this contemporary coastal home and we love the generous kitchen island that’s perfect for guests to lounge at while helping the host prepare some aperitifs.

Photography: Tom Ferguson | Story: Australian House & Garden

Take a step onto the dark side

There’s something classic about a white-on-white palette in the home, but we’re making the case for taking a step into the dark side. A dark feature wall can act as a dramatic statement while adding depth to any room in the house.

The sun-soaked kitchen and dining space of this modernised Georgian Regency villa features dark cabinetry and internal doors.

Photography: Robert Walsh | Story: Australian House & Garden

Get wild about walk-in showers

One of the biggest bathroom design trends of the past few years, the walk-in shower has become beloved for easy to clean nature and its ability to amplify a sense of spaciousness in a bathroom, no matter the size.

In this Mid-Century eco-friendly home, Madeleine, who designed the home for her retiree parents, opted for frameless glass that leads to a luxurious shower with a built-in shelf, full-height window, and freestanding bathtub.

Photography: Mindi Cooke | Story: Inside Out

Create a calm study space

If you have a spare and unused space in your home, consider adding a clever study nook that takes up minimal space.

In this double-height WWII Queenslander what could have been an awkward void of space has been cleverly converted into a bright, breezy study nook that takes advantage of both views and light.

Photo: Brigid Arnott | Story: Country Style

Make a bold first impression with a colourful front door

There’s no greater way to instantly set the mood of your home than upping your home’s kerb appeal. While landscaping and a fresh coat of paint will do the trick, one of the easiest ways to make a bold impact — or if you’re not quite ready to commit to repainting the entire facade — is with a colourful front door.

This weatherboard cottage in Bowral boasts a sophisticated dark exterior where a sunny yellow front door exudes playful charm.

Photography: John Paul Urizar | Story: Australian House & Garden

Add a butler’s pantry (if you have the space)

If you have the space for it, a butler’s pantry can make a world of difference in the home, providing the perfect space for tucking away all your cooking and cleaning when the guests come over, while also adding ample storage.

In Neale Whitaker and partner David Novak-Piper’s country home, a fully equipped butler’s pantry is concealed behind a freestanding nib wall that also boasts extra storage and bench space.

Photography: Armelle Habib | Story: Australian House & Garden

Add some character with a sliding barn door

No matter how big the home, all space is at a premium, so its important to use whatever tricks of the trade that you can to help maximise a sense of spaciousness. Barn doors and internal cavity sliding doors are clever solutions for separating zones without taking up too much space.

In this luxurious home in the Mornington Peninsula this striking barn door adds a rustic touch while also easily connecting and delineating clear zones in the house.

Styling: Kerrie-Ann Jones | Photography: Pablo Veiga | Story: Inside Out

Incorporate (or restore) heritage details

As the saying goes, what’s old is truly new again – so if you’re working with an older home you should do your best to maintain its original heritage features. Not only are they a stunning visual feature, but the original skirtings, mouldings, and ceiling roses, add effortless character to your abode.

When interior designer Jillian Dinkel revamped her Federation home, she made sure to highlight all of the original heritage features to great dramatic effect.

Photography: Simon Whitbread | Story: Home Beautiful

Design a walk-in wardrobe you want to wake up to

If you have the space for it there is nothing more luxurious than a dedicated walk-in wardrobe that’s perfect for keeping your clothes and shoe collection in check. For an extra glamourous touch make sure you add ample open storage so you can see your wares with a quick glance.

The walk-in wardrobe of this Victorian home was carefully planned with custom cabinetry and plush carpet underfoot. Set back from the windows, it allows natural light to flood the space, while keeping the detritus of life behind elegant closed doors.

Photography: Brigid Arnott | Story: Home Beautiful

Rinse off with an outdoor shower

Almost an essential part of any coastal abode, the outdoor shower is the perfect addition to any beachside home – especially if the residents are avid beach-goers. They’re also great for water-loving pets!

In this resort-style new build in the Blue Mountains this outdoor shower is perfect for rinsing off after a dip in the backyard swimming pool, with the surrounding plants and striking brick wall tree providing privacy from neighbours.

Photography: Christopher Frederick Jones | Story: Belle

Optimise your space with open-plan living

Open-plan living has essentially become a standard design in most Australian homes, with many of us loving the easy transition between zones and ability to have the whole family together in one room. But, open-plan living can sometimes have its pitfalls. Work closely with your architect and interior designer to figure out the best layout that will work for you.

In this amazing concrete holiday home on the Noosa River, a pool forms the centrepiece of the property’s design, where indoor/outdoor living zones meet. Vines cascade from every concrete surface, embracing the connection between spaces.

Photo: Maree Homer | Styling: Kerrie-Ann Jones | Story: real living

Don’t be afraid to bring back the banquette seat

When it comes to creating ample seating in your dining room space, you can’t go wrong with an in-built banquette seat. Not only do they look fantastic, but they’re also a great low-maintenance option in the home and can be upholstered however you like.

In this Art Deco-style home the rich emerald green leather upholstery of the banquette seat adds a luxurious contrast to the rattan dining chairs and crisp white walls.

Photography: Maree Homer & Chris Warnes | Story: Australian House & Garden

Create a reading nook you want to relax in

There’s nothing better than curling up with a book and soaking up the sun, and a clever window nook is the ideal location for this. Window seats take up minimal space in the home while also providing an additional spot to lounge in – make sure you ask your builder about integrating drawers into the base of your seat as well for some bonus storage space.

The window seat in this light and airy home, designed by Three Birds Renovations, a curved, corrugated bench seat is tucked directly in front of two generous windows, ensuring the area receives maximum natural light throughout the day.

Photography: Lisa Cohen | Story: Inside Out

Design a laundry you’ll fall in love with

It’s one of the hardest working spaces in the house but can often be considered an afterthought when it comes to the renovation design process. Creating a designated and functional laundry space with ample storage will make a major difference when it comes to keeping your home neat and tidy.

In this Scandi-style family home, the laundry room features ample cupboards for storage as well as a chic brass hanging rail.

Photography: Toby Scott | Story: Inside Out

Encourage indoor-outdoor living with a servery window

There’s nothing Australians love more than making the most of indoor-outdoor living, so why not add a servery window to your kitchen? Perfect in both big spaces and small, a servery window will easily keep the whole family together.

This Queensland pool house has been transformed into a cosy holiday home, and despite its compact size, the servery window has become the perfect place to gather.

Photography: Tom Ferguson | Story: Australian House & Garden

Let there be light with a skylight

Natural light is one of the greatest assets a home can have, but it can be extremely challenging to add once a home has been built. During your renovation process consider adding in some well-placed skylights – they’ll instantly brighten up even the darkest spaces.

This renovated heritage home on Sydney’s Northern Beaches was built with care to respect the home’s roots, where some parts were added new and others restored. Here, a row of incredible skylights looks up into a hallway above.

Photography: Robert Walsh | Story: Belle

Design the kitchen of your dreams

Okay, okay, not the most innovative renovation idea for sure, but hear us out. Creating the perfect modern kitchen that combines form with function is harder than it looks. To start with, you’ll want to nail your kitchen layout, so consider what elements of functionality work best for you and your family.

The kitchen in this luxurious coastal apartment was oriented to make the most of its stunning seascape views, and we love everything about it. Opting for a galley-style kitchen layout, the kitchen includes ample storage as well as easy-to-access appliances.
