]]>They are fantastic in a shared bedroom as they make great use of vertical space and create a fun sleeping zone for young ones, especially if they tend not to like sleeping alone at night. Bunk beds are also great for guest bedrooms, and there are plenty of ways to make them both appropriate (and even appealing!) for adults.
Red Nose Australia recommends that children under the age of nine avoid sleeping on the top bunk as young children are more likely to fall when climbing up and down the ladder or fall from the top bunk while sleeping and are much more susceptible to serious injury.
To ensure your bunk beds are as safe as possible, Product Safety Australia recommend that connections and fasteners are checked regularly to ensure they are strong and secure.
To create a safe sleep environment, it’s also important to ensure that your bunk beds aren’t within reach of blind and curtain cords, lights and ceiling fans. They also recommend removing the ladder (if possible) from bunk beds when not in use to prevent small children from climbing unsupervised.
There are plenty of options when it comes to arranging bunk beds within a room. A lot depends on how much space you have to work with, and any specific restrictions within the room, including windows, ceiling heights and in-built wardrobes.
For small bedrooms, it’s best to position bunk beds against a wall so that there is enough room to still move around the space. For larger spaces, positioning a bunk bed in the middle of the room makes quite the feature and also means that everyone can access their bed from the side.
So whether you’re designing a kids’ room or a fun guest bedroom, take inspiration from these stylish bunk bed ideas that make the most of their respective rooms and space.
When weighing up the cost of building custom bunk beds versus buying bunk beds off the shelf, there are a few things to consider. Do you (or someone you know) have the skills and tools to build the bunk beds or would you need to hire someone? Hiring a carpenter or builder would cost a lot more than buying the materials and building yourself or buying ready-made bunk beds from a store.
It’s likely to be cheaper to buy bunk beds off the shelf or online and there are plenty of fabulous designs on the market that can be delivered straight to your door. You will need to assemble them yourself and it’s important this is done properly to avoid any accidents. If you’re not confident (or don’t have the time), hire someone to assemble them for you.
The vibrant blue built-in bunk beds in this gorgeous new build by the sea on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula — handpainted in Porter’s Paints ‘Mariner’ — perfectly echo the colour palette that runs through the rest of the home.
These custom-built bunk beds fit seamlessly into the contemporary coastal interiors of this newly-built Barwon Heads home. The timber and white palette is carried through from other rooms in the home, including the kitchen and living room.
The bunk room at interior designer Kate Walker’s former home was designed for when her partner Anthony’s kids came to visit. “It’s a very 1980s colour palette,” says Kate. “We used pink, blue, yellow, green – even touches of terracotta here and there.”
Two sets of low-lying bunk beds sit proudly in the centre of one of the bedrooms in this playful Art Deco apartment in Sydney. This quirky decision allows for more beds – everyone can easily get out of bed without banging into a wall or climbing over someone else – and being quite low they don’t overpower the room.
The specially designed and constructed bunk room at luxury accommodation Lumière Lakes in Lake Conjola is owner Zoe’s favourite part of the home’s design. Sleeping up to six, the light and bright space features a loft-style twin bunk and two double beds below.
At this Lorne beach house, designed by Hunting for George, a clever kids’ rumpus/retreat provides space for four children plus a baby in the nursery tucked away to the right.
The nautical-style kids’ bedroom brings a ship’s cabin to mind and promises hours of salty fun spent on holidays in this fresh and airy South Coast beach house. Each bunk has its own reading light and a nook recessed into the wall to store holiday books and treasures.
The casual living room in this colourful country homestead is adjacent to the new bunkhouse. Two bunk beds are framed with blue joinery and are a great way of adding plenty of beds for guests of the family weekender and holiday rental.
A vibrant kids’ room at Uma on Werri — a beautiful new holiday house by the beach — provides the perfect escape for little ones who are visiting, with a double bunk bed maximising the space left for playing.
“The owners were keen to build in as many beds as possible, so a bunk room was the answer,” says interior designer Georgina Jeffries of this holiday home on Victoria’s Surf Coast.
Bunk beds are great space savers and a crisp, all-white colour scheme will make a small room feel spacious and calming. Here, linen in blue ticking fabric adds subdued colour while extendable wall lamps add another layer of functionality.
In this luxurious holiday home in Byron Bay, the shared kids’ room features a striking wallpaper that adds a playful touch to the space. Timber ladders connect the ground floor play area to the elevated sleeping zone.
Inspired by the simplicity of Scandinavian architecture and minimalist beach houses in New Zealand, this contemporary home’s interiors are unassuming. “The palette is based on pale timbers, soft peachy tones and warm whites, referencing the colours of the coastline,” says owner Rebecca. Castello bunk beds from Plyroom tie in with the overall Scandi aesthetic.

Busy Melburnians Simone and David Kelly craved a place to escape to regularly. The bush-inspired weekender features bunk beds in a more sophisticated style that is perfect for accommodating both children and adults.
While an all-white palette for a kid’s room might sound risky, this renovated Byron Bay home features stark white throughout the house. In the boy’s room, a custom elevated bunk system was created to accommodate sleepovers and provide an extra play area.
In the build of this small eco-friendly home in Perth, a custom double bunk bed was created to make the most of the compact footprint and tall ceilings of this kid’s bedroom.
This five-bedroom, off-the-grid farmhouse in the Macedon Ranges was built to withstand a robust family life while remaining comfortable for when guests and extended family come to stay. Two double beds were installed below the kids’ bunk beds to accommodate guests.
The kids’ bedroom within a coastal abode features a bunk bed with a stowaway trundle. It maximises space while fun, colourful furnishings create a comfy retreat for the kids.
The ceiling wallpaper lends a feeling of fun, as well as texture, to this monochromatic bunk bedroom. When renovating the Byron Bay cottage, interior designer Melissa says, “We wanted to capture the essence of the area and the connection to the lush hinterland and the beach.”
At the former home of comedian Merrick Watts, heated polished concrete floors and a sheepskin rug created a super cosy kids’ room. The bunk bed is decorated with bedlinen from Unison.
This renovated beach house in Noosa features a curious kids’ bedroom configuration involving twin custom bunk beds. With four daughters, two of whom now live out of home, the design of this space was designed to encourage communication and connection between the children.
In this Scandinavian-inspired home, a pair of beds are encased in custom joinery, creating a bunk-bed effect. “It relieves the amount of loose furniture required leading the space to feel less cluttered and more spacious,” says architect Clare Cousins.
A slimline bunk bed instantly transformed the children’s bedroom in this renovated miner’s cottage into a shared kids’ space. Playful patterned bedding adds a sense of fun while creating clear zones.

]]>The post The perfect bed bases that will elevate your bedroom appeared first on Homes To Love.
]]>Not to be confused with a bed frame, a bed base is simply the base at the bottom of the bed that your mattress lies on top of. In contrast, a bed frame features a bed base with a bed head attached.
Whether or not you choose a bed frame or a bed base is a personal choice. However, if you love shopping for bed heads with unique designs separately, choosing a bed base (with no bed head attached) is a great option. Plus, bed bases are incredibly easy to put together, often consisting of only two to three components: the base, the legs, and the slats (if included).
Ready to build your dream bed ensemble? Read on for the best bed bases that will elevate your bedroom set-up.

Key features:
Firstly, buying a bed base does not necessarily guarantee that it is free of slats – this boils down to the individual design of each bed base. However, it is common that bed bases are non-slatted. You may prefer a non-slatted bed base if you’re after a bed base that is sturdy. Further, some non-slatted bed bases may make your mattress feel a bit firmer but tend to lean on the pricier side. A slatted bed base, in contrast, is lightweight, cost-effective, and easy to manoeuvre – making it a great choice for those who tend to move a lot (or just love rearranging bedrooms).
Choosing either a slatted or a non-slatted bed base is ultimately up to your preferences, needs, and budget.
Yes, you certainly can. That is ultimately what a bed base is. If you don’t want a bedhead, then a bed base will work just fine to elevate your mattress off the ground as you sleep. A separate bed base is also a great option for those who love to swap out their bed heads occasionally.

Leather is one of the most durable materials for any piece of furniture as it’s hard-wearing, long lasting and resistant to spills and stains, making it easy to maintain. When it comes to lounge suites, you tend to get what you pay for. It’s worth investing a little more for a higher-quality set, as these will last you much longer. A well-made lounge suite should last you at least a decade or longer if it’s well looked after.

Key features:
As most dining rooms are rectangular spaces, large dining tables may restrict space, so rectangular or oval tables are more ideal for these rooms. But if you have the space, a large rectangular table will provide plenty of space for entertaining.
Round tables are practical in high traffic areas, and styles featuring a single leg allow enough leg room for a number of chairs. If you need something small and compact, square tables are best as they can easily be tucked into a corner.
TIP
If you’re just buying a table for dining chairs you already own, measure the chairs to ensure they will fit underneath. A distance of about 20cm from chair to tabletop makes for the most comfy dining.
Timber finishes can make the most beautiful dining tables, and are often also the most popular, as they lend themselves to a range of different interior styles, are durable and easy to care for.
Marble, stone and concrete are also loved for their aesthetic, but beware of the upkeep; many stone surfaces are prone to stains. Another practical option for dining tables is laminate, which is inexpensive and hard-wearing.
Stone, steel and concrete are some of the most durable materials available, and so any tables made using these mediums are sure to be long lasting, scratch-resistant and provide a good durability that will see your dining table last decades. If your budget can stretch, marble is also a great, durable material that not only exudes luxury and opulence but will also provide you with a scratch-resistant surface for your table.
A common material used for making dining tables is wood, which can be durable depending on the type of wood used. For a durable dining table, opt for designs made using hard woods such as white or red oak, walnut, mahogany or mango wood. Dining tables made from softer woods such as pine or cedar will be less durable and more susceptible to scratches.

]]>Whether it’s round or rectangular, oval or square, a dining table not only forms the foundation of a dining area but becomes a hub of activity in its own right. It’s a spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as homework and work, a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. So the search for the perfect dining table for your space is not one to take lightly.
A round table is great in a smaller space; it can tuck in a little closer to a wall without penning people in. The round shape – like its oval cousin – also slides nicely into the curve trend we’re spotting everywhere right now.

Key features:
Too big and it feels like you’re one of the knights of the round table, too small and you’re playing footsie with your grandmother all Christmas: the size of a round table can make or break the look of a room, as well as a dinner party.
As well as helping conversation, a round table can fit in spaces where other shapes look too intrusive, or where they take up too much room. Round tables are ideal for smaller dining areas as they fit into compact space, making the most of the available room. They can fit in a corner, or cosy up well to a curved booth seat (beware a round table against a squared corner booth though, the person sitting on the corner may not be able to reach the table). Round tables work well in the middle of a room as well, and look stunning with a pendant light hanging overhead.

Bedrooms are one of the most intimate spaces within our home, so when it comes to questions that begin with ‘should’, it’s important to remember that whatever you like goes. In design, cohesion in a space is a big element of style, so ideally, a bed and bedside tables would match.
While some big brands offer bedroom suites — as in you can buy a bedframe, bedside table, dresser, and tallboy all in one style — it may be convenient but risks the space looking too matchy-matchy and lacking a bit of soul.
Instead, you should try to find a bedside table and bed that complement one another. That could simply mean they’re the same colour, or share a similar shape or design feature.
According to the principles of Feng Shui, balance and harmony are essential to ensuring a positive energy flow in a space, which often means styling furniture and home decor in even numbers. While having only one bedside table is not necessarily considered bad Feng Shui, it may disrupt the balance of a space.
Traditionally in Feng Shui, having two bedside tables and matching items on either side of the bed promotes balance and equality for both partners in the relationship. If you are the only one sleeping in the bed, you may not require this.
If space or budget constraints mean you can only have one bedside table, you could mitigate any potential imbalance by placing something functional on the other side of the bed (a stool or bookshelf, perhaps), or focusing instead on other aspects of Feng Shui within the room.

From full-fledged outdoor dining settings to versatile seating and a comfy lounge, we’re here with the lowdown on about choosing the perfect outdoor furniture for your backyard, as well as our favourite brands and picks.
It’s that time of year when outdoor areas get a decent workout. Splintery or poorly performing furniture won’t cut it, so treat your friends and family to a luxurious, no-stress sit-down.
(Photography: Maree Homer)The holiday period is peak time for catching up with family. While that can be wonderful, putting related people together means that things can get awkward and stuff may be said. Handle it by splitting the crowd, literally. A trick of the design trade is to set up zones to create moments and opportunities for conversations in your outdoor space, says interiors expert Shannon Vos. This will help inhibit the craziness that can come with hosting a crowd.
Create multiple spaces for a couple of people to connect and converse, and you’ll have an outdoor set-up that invites people in and encourages them to stay (this may or may not be a good thing).
These zones could be anything from a few settings around a pool, a couple of spots to sit on the deck, or even totally separate zones in a bigger backyard.
In the outdoor entertaining zone of this Byron Bay holiday home, a Robert Plumb dining set is the crowning feature.
(Styling: Sarah Ellison | Photography: Jessie Prince)Just like an indoor furniture arrangement, an outdoor zone needs to flow. People need to move around or through your zones, so it’s important to have the set-out and scale just right.
Far too many times I’ve seen giant outdoor lounges (that homeowners fall in love with) crammed into tiny spaces on decks and in yards and they don’t look good.
Work with the space you have and don’t overdo it. On top of that, your exterior aesthetic should flow and complement your interior one, and your patio, deck or yard should be treated like another indoor room.
Similar colours, textures and shapes should be used to create a sense of cohesiveness.
A successful outdoor kitchen, for example, flows from inside to out with similar (if not the same) benchtops and cabinetry as the indoor kitchen.
Jedd armchairs and a coffee table from MCM house create the ultimate relaxed entertaining zone in the backyard of this Bondi duplex.
(Styling: Sarah Ellison | Photography: Maree Homer)Outdoor materials have come a long way since the brittle plastic furniture our parents owned, but most quality pieces are either made from timber, aluminium or a plastic-based composite.
That said, all these materials need regular upkeep as the harsh Australian weather can play havoc with anything left outside.
Timber will dry out and split in no time; aluminium bubbles and calcifies almost like rust; and plastics can fade quicker than you can say ‘three-year warranty’.
To properly care for and protect your outdoor furniture, you need to wash it regularly – that means a couple of times each year – to get rid of the salt, dust and grime that creates an environment of erosion.
Timbers, particularly tropical timers, look and perform great outdoors, but they will need a lick of oil every so often, so if you are looking at a teak lounge set, buy a brush as well.
A crisp white outdoor dining set complements the coastal aesthetic of this fibro cottage in Avalon.
(Styling: Vanessa Colyer Tay | Photography: Simon Whitbread)As a general rule, if something is cheap, it probably won’t last, especially if it lives outside. But there are a few ways to save on outdoor furniture.
Consider buying individual pieces one at a time, instead of the entire set at once (checking that the style won’t be discontinued anytime soon).
A new table for alfresco dining can look great, but aged chairs will make it look drab, so restore any furniture you’re planning on keeping to maintain that new look aesthetic.
If you’re an upcycler, timber furniture that has seen a few seasons can be brought back to life with a few rolls of sandpaper, some elbow grease and a decent lick of furniture oil.
As well as that, old and tattered fabrics are easily reupholstered with a UV-stable fabric such as Sunbrella or Sunproof. And remember, rustic is the new chic and stumps make great stools, as long as you source them ethically – no National Parks please!
furniture flops
Don’t wallow in regret over the wrong purchases. Here are our top tips to avoid outdoor furniture disasters.
Avoid thin legs on chairs if placing them on grass; they will sink into dirt quicker than a stiletto after a rainy day.
Cover your fabrics and furniture. Or better yet, bring them indoors when not in use. Prolonged exposure to rain and sun quickly ages furniture.
Use timbers designed for the Australian summer. Non-tropical timbers don’t handle humidity well, so get to know your woods.
Black furniture and fabrics will absorb every bit of energy and heat from the sun, resulting in burnt bums and faded fabrics.
Bring happy hour, barbecues and dinners outside with statement outdoor dining sets for all budgets. Outdoor furniture doesn’t come cheap, so you want an outdoor dining set that will stand the test of time, that still feels fresh come next summer and the one after that.
There’s nothing quite like spending time in the great outdoors, and being surrounded by nature is even better when there’s a decent place to sit or recline. Enter the outdoor bench seat; a not-clunky, elegant, and versatile piece of outdoor furniture so adored that lovers carve their names in them, poets daydream on them, and you and your family can sit, eat, prop stuff, and build forts on them. Here are the best outdoor bench seats for your backyard or patio.
Those gorgeous days that drawl into magical alfresco evenings are something special indeed – but it’s the smallest touches that make the biggest difference. Case in point: outdoor lounge chairs. Here’s our round up of comfortable outdoor sofas and outdoor lounge chairs that offer beauty as well as durability.
From rounded outdoor dining tables to wooden tables that fit six – or more if you squeeze in – we’ve rounded up the best outdoor dining tables that will lay the foundation for all your outdoor soirees this season.
An outdoor rug is a stylishly simple accessory that will tie everything together in your outdoor space. Hard wearing and beautiful at once, a rug will also protect bare feet from hot tiles sitting all day in the sun. Plus, they’re the fastest way to cover up a regrettable tile or paver choice, because we’ve all seen those debacles. Choose an outdoor rug that will make your alfresco space cosy in the winter and that withstand whatever weather the year throws at you.
If there’s one thing Australians love more than the extended sunshine itself, it’s alfresco dining. Migrating from the couch and venturing into the great outdoors (well, your backyard) is the best opportunity to spruce up your alfresco living area with some new furniture — and these days the possibilities are actually endless. From market umbrellas to all-weather armchairs, here are some of the latest affordable outdoor furniture buys to inspire your next gathering.
We love these Oiside ‘No.12’ wire-frame lounge chairs from Robert Plumb, but there is a vast array of outdoor chairs for all styles and all budgets out there. Here are the best outdoor chairs in Australia right now. Here are the best chairs, tables and outdoor furniture sets to shop in Australia.

Key features:
Coffee tables come in various shapes and sizes. One popular material amongst home design enthusiasts is glass. Glass coffee tables give the illusion of a bigger lounge or living area, and while it may seem fragile, glass – namely, tempered glass – in reality is incredibly durable, making it a great option for coffee tables.
It’s important to know how to take care of any furniture piece within the home correctly to ensure it lasts through the seasons. And with glass coffee tables, there are a few things to remember. If you’ll be using your glass coffee table to place, well, a cup of coffee, you’ll want to ensure you have protective coasters handy. Cork coasters are a great option for glass tabletops as they will not scratch or damage the delicate glass surface. Further, you can use table runners or trays with cork bases to ensure you keep your glass tabletop scratch-free, too.

]]>Ideally, you want to create an outdoor area that caters to both entertainment and relaxation; a place where you can wine and dine and then flop into a comfortable lounge setting or daybed for an afternoon nap or after-dinner digestif.
“The first thing to consider is how you would like your outdoor space to function,” says David Hardwick from King Living.
“Are you looking for sensory-rich alfresco dining, a chic patio to host an intimate cocktail party, a top spot for a banging backyard BBQ, or perhaps a peaceful lounging nook to enjoy a good book and escape the kids? How you’re going to interact with the space will determine the furniture you’ll need.”
This restored Italianate mansion in Toorak boasts manicured gardens in the courtyard where dining chairs by Manutti surround a dining table by Tribù. The outdoor lounge chair is from Coco Republic and the outdoor sofa and coffee table are both from Cosh Living.
(Photography: Mark Roper | Story: Belle)For outdoor entertaining areas, a generous and comfortable dining table and chairs are a must. If space permits, an 8-10 seater outdoor table, paired with a mixture of bench seats and chairs, will allow you plenty of space for long lunches, dinner parties and backyard BBQs. If your outdoor area is on the smaller size a 4-6 seater table will work better and still allow you to entertain alfresco.
“Although we would all like to live on acreage, in Australia space is at a premium, so having the freedom to be flexible is key to optimising outdoor spaces,” says David. “This is where modular furniture can add real value. Extendable tables will ensure you’re able to accommodate a drop-in guest on a balmy summer night, while modular outdoor lounges offer wonderful versatility.
“These can be configured to work with you and your ever-evolving needs, and are perfect if you need to move house.”
So, whether you’re in the market for some outdoor dining furniture or a comfortable lounge setting (or both), we’ve rounded up a range of outdoor furniture sets to suit all budgets. These luxury outdoor furniture sets can be easily rearranged into different setting options to suit your entertaining needs and mood.

]]>The post 8 double beds that will give your boudoir a boost appeared first on Homes To Love.
]]>Double beds come in a huge range of styles and types. Some love the look of a traditional wooden frame, while others like a bed-head look perhaps finished in velvet or linen. Or keep things simple and dress your bed in beautiful quilts and linen instead. The size and look of a double bed in a room varies massively, depending on the height of the bed, and the depth of your mattress. Some come with elaborate headboards and footboards that make them appear more bulky, but others lie almost futon-like and minimalist on the floor. A footboard can close in a room, and is better suited to larger spaces, where a headboard can add some grand elegance in a simple way. Some double beds have no headboard at all, and will sit against a wall instead. A double bed frame looks beautiful when there is something special for it to prop against, perhaps panelling or plaster on the wall behind, a shelf or a statement bed head. Consider what type of bed will suit your space to help make yours a beautiful bedroom.
These double beds span a wide range of designs that will appeal to a variety of tastes and budgets and are all durable, great quality, and stylish.

Metal and wood work harmoniously together in this double bed frame that has an industrial design look. The bed has black powder-coated steel and dark wood accents on a metal frame with evenly spaced slats that allow for even weight distribution. It fits an Australian double mattress.
Key features:
No matter what size bed frame your room or situation calls for, it’s important to measure the frame up carefully before you purchase. Some beds are much wider than the mattress they fit, while others are more streamlined and fit neatly. A double size mattress in Australia measures 137 x 190cm (or 54″ x 74″) and fits a double bed which is usually about 143cm across. Most mattress makers and sellers will give the exact measurements of each bed they sell on their website.
A queen mattress measures 153 x 203cm, and a queen bed will usually be about 160cm in width. It’s best to measure the size of your room and make sure you have space for bedside tables, powerpoints and anything else you need before you purchase a bed frame and mattress.
How big is a double bed?
Australian beds usually come in five sizes for adults, and include single, king single, double, queen and king. They are designed to fit the standard mattress sizes in Australia, and are usually 5 to 15cm wider than the mattress they will accomodate, but will vary. Australia has a unique set of bed (mattress) sizes that differ from those in the United States and in the United Kingdom. However, Australian bed sizes are very similar to those in New Zealand. Australian mattress sizes span cot to super king sizes, though long single and super king are more rare.
Single mattress
92 cm x 188 cm
Long Single mattress
92 cm x 203 cm
King Single mattress
107 cm x 203 cm
Double mattress
138 cm x 188 cm
Queen mattress
153 cm x 203 cm
King mattress
183 cm x 203 cm
Super King mattress
203 cm x 203 cm
A double bed can generally fit two average-sized adults, as it measures 135 cm wide and 190 cm long. Many couples prefer a larger queen bed or a king-sized bed. Not all makers or even big-time bed sellers now make double bed sizes, they’re considered a little more old fashioned for a couple. But many couples also prefer the closeness a double bed frame offers, as well as the size proportionate to their bedrooms. Queen and king-sized beds are becoming the norm, while double beds can sometimes feel too small for two people or too big for one. However, a double bed is a practical choice for adults who are average height and size, and they’re a great option for those children who seem to be growing faster by the minute.

]]>The post 7 outdoor bench seats that prove alfresco is best appeared first on Homes To Love.
]]>A bench seat can work equally well as a flexible dining seat for your outdoor table as it can in an entryway, or on a front porch for the kids to get their shoes on or off. It’s the perfect solution for more hidden or tucked away areas in the garden – a place to prop a watering can or for the hard-working gardener (you, right?) to have a little rest.
A bench seat is just what is needed to design the ultimate al fresco space.
Looks are important, but when choosing a new outdoor bench seat for your home it’s a good idea to do your research and consider what you will use it for.
Teak, Fijian mahogany, stainless steel, wrought iron, powder-coated aluminium — there are so many materials used for outdoor benches and chairs that will withstand the Australian weather variations for years.
One of the most popular material choices for outdoor furniture is wood. It looks great, and it’s often durable and hardwearing. Teak is a solid wood that weathers beautifully and will last for years with little attention. It can stain, but can be easily sanded back and oiled to restore it. Acacia is popular in Australia for wearing well and aging beautifully.
Stainless steel is the ultimate material for not staining the surface it’s placed on and for being able to withstand hard sun as well as wet weather. Like stainless steel, aluminium has the benefit of being light to carry around or move if needed.
$487 (usually $650), Freedom
The concrete top of this practical bench seat makes it virtually indestructible, even in the harsh Australian climate. It has an acacia timber frame and legs, and the concrete comes in white or dark grey.
$199, Temple & Webster
It’s almost too pretty to take outside, but this rattan-look bench seat will enhance and handle any space in your home. The wooden part of the bench is made from FSC-certified acacia wood that is sustainably sourced and produced. The rattan seat is durable, mainly due to it being made of polyethylene plastic which will stand the test of time.
$560 (was $700), Freedom
With its minimalist, sturdy design, this acacia wood bench seat will withstand almost all weather. It’s been finished with a wire brush that gives it a rustic look, while its slatted seat allows water to pass through. It comes with a fibre-filled cushion to make long afternoons in the outdoors even more delightful.
$899, Lounge Lovers
Acacia is having its day in the sun in the design world, and this piece is no exception. There’s a 12-month warranty on this beautiful bench seat, and the slatted top will help prevent rainwater from pooling. It has a light teak look, and it will fit plenty of your favourite people at 250cm long.
$499, Lounge Lovers
Whether it’s sitting indoors or outdoors, this contemporary seat crafted from solid acacia wood is a versatile alternative to dining chairs.
$299 (usually $399), Early Settler
Sage green is the colour that won’t quit, and we have nothing bad to say about that. This wipeable, easy-to-clean, easy-to-live-with bench seat is 200cm long and it’s not hard to imagine it becoming a family favourite outside. It’s made from galvanised steel, is powder coated, and comes with a matching dining table.
$1049 (was $1399), Early Settler
Robust and sculpted, there’s everything chic about this marble-look bench seat made from reinforced concrete over an iron frame. It’s Art Deco meets Roman classicism. It’s bulky, but it won’t be flying around when the wind picks up. It’s just fine in whatever the sun can throw at it, but it will keep better if stored undercover.

And especially when you’re living in Australia, when summers can hit temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius – or above – ensuring your outdoor fridge can handle external heat while keeping your food chilled optimally is vital.
Look for refrigerators that are designed for outdoor use. These units generally have Ingress Protection (IP) ratings, which grade the refrigerator’s resistance against dust or liquids. An IP rating consists of two numbers. The first number indicates its protection against solid objects on a scale from 0 (no protection) to 6 (highest level of protection). The second number indicates its protection against liquids on a scale from 0 (no protection) to 9 (protection from high-pressure hot water from various angles). You can learn more about IP ratings, here.
If you spend most of your time (especially in the warmer months) lounging in your backyard, or you love to host friends and families frequently, an outdoor refrigerator is well worth the investment. It’ll save you time from going back and forth between your indoor and outdoor kitchen when cooking – which can be stressful when you have extra mouths to feed. If you entertain on occasion but still want to elevate your outdoor living facilities – an outdoor bar fridge or beverage centre may be a better-suited option. It’s not recommended to store food in bar fridges or beverage centres, so this is something to take note of when making your purchasing decision.

]]>The post 10 outdoor dining sets you’ll actually use year round appeared first on Homes To Love.
]]>Outdoor dining sets don’t come cheap, so you want something that will stand the test of time, that still feels fresh come next summer and the one after that. Exposure to the elements means outdoor chairs, tables and any other dining piece needs to withstand rain, wind, salt air (if you’re by the water), and certainly the harsh Australian sun. We have the lowdown on what materials are best for the great outdoors, how to make your outdoor dining space shine, and the best outdoor dining sets no matter your taste and budget.
Style your outdoor space with sturdy furniture that will get you dining alfresco, no matter what time of year it is. Even in winter you can have a warm and welcoming space to eat outdoors. If you want something truly inviting, swap out your typical black, white or green-grey outdoor dining set for something more vibrant. Earthy tones like rust, mustard, terracotta and timber will add instant warmth.
It’s that time of year when outdoor areas get a decent workout. Splintery or poorly performing furniture won’t cut it, so treat your friends and family to a luxurious, no-stress sit-down.
(Photography: Maree Homer)Teak, Fijian mahogany, stainless steel, wrought iron, powder-coated aluminium — there are so many materials used for outdoor dining tables and chairs that will withstand the Australian weather variations for many years.
One of the most popular material choices for outdoor furniture is wood. It’s a classic, it goes with any design style, and it has an understated appearance. Plus, it’s often durable and hardwearing. Teak is a solid wood that weathers beautifully and will last for years with little attention. It can stain, but can be easily sanded back and oiled to restore it. Fijian mahogany looks beautiful but needs a lot of care, regular oiling and you need to be careful not to let it leach on precious decking or tiles.
Hardwoods tend to be heavy when used in outdoor furniture, but that can be a bonus if you don’t want your dining table moving around in harsh winds.
Aluminium and stainless steel have the benefit of being light, unlike wrought iron that will last forever but is difficult to move, and almost impossible to stack. Aluminium and stainless steal are more budget friendly than wrought iron, and the baked-on powder coat gives them a smooth texture and appearance as well as helps prevent corrosion and gives you any colour in the rainbow to choose from.
In the outdoor entertaining zone of this Byron Bay holiday home, a Robert Plumb dining set is the crowning feature.

They come in this sand colour as well as black and white, they’re lightweight and the moulded seat is super comfortable. These outdoor dining chairs are easy to wipe down and we like the one-year warranty. They won’t wilt in the harsh Australian sun, and they look as fresh as a bright spring day in the garden.

A robust FCS acacia, teak-look tabletop gives serious wow-factor to this round dining table. The complete package includes the Jayne dining table and four dining chairs that have UV and water resistant material that won’t fade. We love that this outdoor dining set is eco-friendly, and the metal base and chair legs are metal and resistant to rust.

Colour your patio pretty with these outdoor dining chairs that come in an assortment of eight different hues. Think midnight blue and dark forest green. We love that the rain falls right through the gaps in the seat, meaning less wiping down day to day. There’s no matching table, but these versatile chairs can pull up against any dining table with the same sleek design.

Powder coated and with aluminium construction, this table is excellent for outdoor use. Simple assembly makes it a practical piece. Match it with the Slim Dining Chair in Clay, also at Fenton & Fenton.
$5010, Robert Plumb
This is a money-no-object kind of table, but it sure has style. It comes with a matching bench, made in Australia from the same Fijian mahogany as the table. This wood will leach when left to weather naturally outside in the first few months, but then it will calm down. It takes a little care, but don’t so many things of beauty?

]]>The post 7 of the best deck chairs that will have you sitting back in style appeared first on Homes To Love.
]]>Not only do they look good, deck chairs are also a highly practical piece of outdoor furniture. Their foldable design makes them easily portable and convenient to store when they’re not in use. They’are also a great accessory to take with you to the beach, the park for picnics, camping, or even over to a friend’s place for a casual BBQ.
WHY ARE THEY CALLED DECK CHAIRS?
The term ‘deck chair’ came from the fact that these collapsible chairs were commonly found on the decks of cruise ships in the early 20th century. As they were easily portable, they allowed passengers to move freely around the ship, taking in the view and fresh air wherever they pleased.
As a piece of furniture that lives predominantly outside, it’s important to also consider the materials it’s made with, along with comfort and style. Teak is a popular option as it has natural resistance to decay and insects. It is also highly durable and requires little maintenance, provided you’re happy for it to softly patina over time. Aluminum is a strong alternative if you’re looking for something super durable. It is also more lightweight, rust-resistent and is a good choice for coastal gardens or to use at the beach.
In a sea of options, it can be hard to choose a deck chair that is both stylish and comfortable, so we’ve done the hard work and research for you. All you need to do now is sit back (in your deck chair!) and relax.

]]>The post 8 rattan dining chairs to weave into your all-natural interiors appeared first on Homes To Love.
]]>Not only are these pieces a wonderful visual addition to interiors but they can be highly durable if you know what to look for. Here, we delve into the allure of rattan dining chairs, uncovering their versatility, craftsmanship, and the artistry that elevates them beyond mere seating options.
Often used interchangeably, it’s understandable to be unsure of the difference between these two. Put simply, wicker is a weaving style used most commonly in baskets and furniture while rattan is a material made from a vine that grows in tropical regions. The reason these two terms are often confused is because outdoor furniture can often feature a wicker weave with rattan material.
Homeowner and director of Balgowlah-based residential design studio Your Beautiful Home, Anna Williams, paired the timber dining table in her coastal style home with Nalani rattan chairs from Inartisan.
(Photography: Simon Whitbread | Styling: Corina Koch | Story: Inside Out)If a high-quality material, such as PE rattan, is used, rattan dining chairs can be some of the most durable pieces of furniture, lasting between five to 10 years. However, PU, PVC and synthetic rattans can have drastically reduced life expectancies, with warranties of only one year. It is important to understand the quality of the material before purchasing any rattan furniture.
It is also possible to restore rattan furniture that is starting to unravel or look weathered.
Creating rattan is both a complex and lengthy process. Rattan palms are cut down, peeled and boiled before undergoing a drying process that lasts several days before they are further treated with oils. Pieces are then often handwoven or made with elaborate machinery, escalating costs.
There are, of course, cheaper options out there to allow everyone to get the rattan look without the price point – and not all because of lower quality materials. A simple assemble-at-home design can significantly reduce expenses.

]]>A coffee table of the rectangle variety is popular for a reason, it’s versatile, fits snugly with your existing lounge or sofa sets, and is big enough for board games night with friends and family.
Styling your coffee table is a great way to show off your personality and design taste. And with a rectangle coffee table, there’s a lot you can do to add a bit of artistic or visual flair to your space.
Create a coffee table vignette: creating a coffee table vignette is an easy way to add a decorative flair to your space. Choose a base to start with (like a book or a decorative tray) and work your way up. Our tip? Variety is key, make sure there are varying heights, shapes, and textures. And always work in odd numbers – so, three pillar candles, never four, for example.
Add flowers: you can never go wrong with a bunch of fresh flowers to brighten up your living space.
Coffee table books: there are so many gorgeous coffee table books to choose from, this is the only time where the cover of a book does matter. Choose one that matches your existing decor and your interests.

]]>The post Curved sofas, tables and more: how to embrace the elegant furniture trend appeared first on Homes To Love.
]]>Soft and fluid silhouettes that project a feminine aesthetic are a hallmark of this global interior design trend and offer a reprieve from sleek, modern lines. Here is a round-up of shapely pieces for the home that offer serious curve appeal.
Curves aren’t just for the building but the furniture too. The voluptuous B&B Italia ‘Up Series 2000’ armchair and ottoman by Gaetano Pesce in this revived Victorian terrace brings plenty of personality to the space.Photographer: Rhiannon Taylor | Belle
An excellent way to add visual interest to your space, curved furniture is known for creating a relaxing atmosphere in your home. Gentle contours and ergonomic structures are some of the functional elements of curved furniture that can enhance comfort and overall wellbeing.
While the dominant style in the last decade was focused on straight lines, we see people wanting to embrace the organic, fluid lines found in nature,” says Leah Howatson, Vice President of Marketing at Castlery.
“Incorporating graceful arches and rounded edges into your furniture is a great way to soften the room making it feel relaxed yet still sophisticated. Especially now that society is prioritising wellness and self-care, people see value in making their homes feel like sanctuaries so they can thrive,” she explains.

(Photography: Sharyn Cairns / Story: Real Living)Whether it’s a dramatic spherical lamp or a soft contoured ottoman, playing with materials, shape, and colours allow you to tailor the curves to your own style and needs.
As Leah points out, curved furniture isn’t just for the large, contemporary modern homes that you see on Instagram. “You can still include curved pieces in a petite space. For example, you can use an armchair with a curved base or curved wingback as a curvaceous accent to make an inviting nook,” she suggests.
An irresistible choice for anyone looking to add elegance and style to their homes, curved furniture really is the perfect way to add a fresh, comfortable and contemporary aesthetic to your space.

Many offshoots fit under the ‘coastal-home‘ category, from contemporary styles to Hamptons, but one key element that is universal amongst this design choice is the relaxed feel it exudes. ]]>The post Bed Threads’ new furniture range brings luxe and fun into the bedroom appeared first on Homes To Love.
]]>The just-launched collection comprises nine essential pieces, bedheads, bedside tables, a sideboard and accessories. Like the chemical-free, carbon neutral linen before it, the furniture is all made from natural materials – think mango wood, rattan and linen. It embraces a colour palette in line with the muted, earthen tones that reign almighty in the bed linen space.
The collection was born from the desire to create quality, easy to live with pieces, says lead product designer on the new range, Ponti Lekhawichit. “I was inspired by the juncture of modernity and tradition. The collection is translated into tactile and comforting interiors [that] combine organic shapes, irregular and imperfect forms, and plenty of arches.”
The new furniture pieces complement the company’s existing linen range, and the natural, neutral tones of the mango wood and rattan set the perfect backdrop for the vast range of colours in the bedding range.
“This collection is designed for anyone wanting to create serene spaces that are imbued with subtle luxury and understated elegance. It’s for everyone who loves Bed Threads, and who values quality design and natural materials,” says Ponti.
Interiors don’t have to be matchy-matchy, says lead designer on the furniture range, Ponti. The classic rattan bedhead has a fun wave in it, paired here with French clay and terracotta bedding.
(Source: Bed Threads)When investing in new furniture, ask whether this is a timeless piece, and remember everything doesn’t have to be “matchy-matchy”, says Ponti. “Picking something that works within your existing colour palette will ensure consistency. Weighing in on the new collection was how customers might like to live with it, says Ponti. “We had a strong vision for our first furniture collection, and wanted it to feel like a natural extension of our existing range.” This thinking allowed the team to tailor the design process and translate the vision into the final design and overall aesthetics of the collection.
