For most bathrooms, a bath mat is essential. Bath mats keep the space dry (or as dry as possible) after a shower, bath, or even after washing your face over the sink. However, finding a bath mat that is easy to maintain while also lasting the test of time is a lot harder than it sounds. That’s where stone bath mats come in.

Traditional bath mats, such as ones made from cotton, are great. Cotton is known for its moisture-wicking and hypoallergenic qualities. However, fabric bath mats tend to stay damp for a long time after you shower, which may cause them to develop mould or start smelling a bit funky (yuck). That’s why we were intrigued when we stumbled across the viral stone bath mat—which many reviewers claim to be the ultimate ‘Buy It For Life’ item for the home.

What are stone bath mats?

You may be confused or concerned if you haven’t seen stone bath mats before. But don’t worry—stone bath mats are anything but scary. A stone bath mat or a diatomite bath mat is made from diatomaceous stone. Diatomaceous stone is a naturally occurring, highly absorbent material, making it great for bath mats.

Diatomite stone bath mats are praised for their quick-drying nature (you can see them dry right in front of your eyes; see video above), their ability to keep your bathroom dry, and their ability to prevent mould or mildew growth.

Do stone bath mats work?

Diatomite stone bath mats work incredibly well to keep your bathroom dry after a shower or bath. Thanks to the porous nature of diatomite stone, it absorbs water quickly and effectively.

One thing to note is that these bath mats are made from, well, stone. So, if you’re used to fluffy bath mats, getting used to stone bath mats may take a while. It’s a completely different experience and feel – but fear not, it’s not freezing cold (like accidentally stepping onto floor tiles on a winter evening), as these stone bath mats stay closer to room temperature.

What type of bath towel is the best?

Egyptian cotton towels

Bath towels can be made from different materials, with Egyptian cotton traditionally taking the crown when it comes to the best type of cotton towel. Made from the Egyptian cotton plant where the staples are much longer (in comparison to regular cotton). Further, Egyptian cotton towels are more absorbent as it has a denser fabric composition.

Turkish towels

Turkish cotton hails from the Aegean Region in Turkey, and all cotton produced and turned into towels from this region are Turkish cotton towels. Turkish cotton feature long threads that are stronger and softer than regular cotton. And similar to Egyptian cotton, Turkish cotton also becomes softer and more absorbent as you use it and wash it.

Bamboo towels

Made from bamboo fibres, bamboo towels are a great eco-friendly option when compared to standard cotton towels. Bamboo is gentler than cotton and has a more delicate look and feel. It’s fast absorbing and has natural cooling properties that make it a great choice for warmer climates.

Getting out of bed during the winter months is difficult enough, notwithstanding placing your feet on cold tiled floors or coming out of a steamy shower into a frigid room first thing in the morning. If you can relate, it might be time to make a bathroom heaters your next winter purchase.

As any Melbournite or Sydneysider – especially those with older homes would know – the mostly-balmy Australian climate made it so that plenty of homes were designed to keep the heat out – not in. This approach works perfectly fine 75% of the time, but for those painfully cold few months in the middle of the year, another method is needed.

That’s where bathroom heaters come into the fray. When you’re coming out of the steamy shower, there’s no need to endure an assault of icy air tickling your toes. Bathroom heaters are a safe, inexpensive heating appliance that could be your saviour these winter months.

But how can that be, when we all know never to mix water and electricity?

Why is my bathroom so cold in the winter?

The bathroom is typically the coldest room in the house as the materials used, like porcelain and tile, are designed to be waterproof, so feel much colder to the touch. Combine that with the absence of soft furnishings and plenty of extra ventilation to let the humidity (and heat!) out, the temperature difference during cooler months can feel stark.

What kind of heater is safe to use in a bathroom?

Bathroom heaters differ from the classic gas, electric, or reverse cycle systems you’ll find in the rest of your home. The compact appliance is designed specifically for use in the bathroom, and consideration increased humidity and water often found in these rooms. When choosing a heater for the bathroom, you will need to look for its IP rating, the international specification for water and particle protection. Some popular options include radiant light heaters, electric wall heaters and underfloor heaters.

What is an IP rating?

The two digits on your heater that come after the letters “IP” refer to its level of weatherproofing, with the first digit referring to its solid particle protection and the second digit referring to its protection against water. Particle ratings go from 1 (effective against objects larger than 50mm) to 6 (complete protection against dust), whereas waterproofing ratings go from 1 (protects against water droplets) to 9 (protects against high temperature water jets).

Can an IP24 heater be used in a bathroom?

The minimum rating you’d be looking for in a bathroom heater is IP24, which is effective against objects no smaller than 12.5mm in size (2) and has splash protection (4).

What IP rating is 100% waterproof in Australia?

For complete waterproofing, the gold standard would be IP67 or higher, which offers complete protection against dust (6) as well as immersion protection up to one metre (7).

Best bathroom heaters in Australia

The most common bathroom heaters are radiant heat lamps that use a warming amber light wave to directly heat the space below it. They don’t use moving air to circulate the heat, so are suitable for an immediate burst of ambient heat in small rooms like bathrooms, but they use a lot of electricity in the process.

Electric wall heaters are another great option as long as they are professionally installed and splash proof (rated IP24 or higher). They sit on your wall and circulate instant hot air instantly, and are suitable for small to large rooms.

Finally, underfloor heating is a simple luxury that offers the feeling of stepping out of the shower onto a warm floor. It’s space saving, energy efficient and a low cost way to take the chill out of the floor. The result is a toasty, warm and inviting bathroom.

What are the benefits of buying a washer dryer combo machine?

The main benefit of a washer dryer combo machine is the space you can save in your home, as they are a much more compact option compared to having two separate machines. “The key benefits of having a washing/dryer combo comes back to space and time,” says Andrew Wand, the Head of the Home Appliances Department at Samsung. “If you’re limited on laundry space, you’re able to have the benefits of both machines in one unit.”

Whether you’re planning on creating a European-style laundry in the kitchen or are hoping to take advantage of the empty space underneath the stairs, a single unit will always be a more space-savvy choice than two separate units – especially if you tend to use the dryer sparingly throughout the year.

Do washer dryer combos use more electricity?

Combined washer dryer units tend to be fairly energy efficient because they generally feature the same washing components as most washing machines, and utilise the same parts for the drying cycle. Standalone dryers have traditionally used air condenser technology which usually requires external venting to pump out moisture (using more energy to do so) and another downside of this is that it can cause condensation within the house.

Heat pumps are the latest development in drying technology and are considered a much more energy-efficient alternative to condenser dryers. “They’re a very efficient way to dry clothes as they have a more gentle drying process and use lower temperature air,” explains Brad, “they do take longer, but it’s a more energy-efficient way of heating and extracting moisture from clothes.”

A washing machine is one of the hardest workers in the home so when it comes to upgrading your unit, it’s important to find the right one for your household. To help you choose your next washing machine, we share our top picks of the best washing machines on the market, and what you should be looking for.

From high-tech machines with multiple settings to larger capacity units that speed up the clothes washing process, washing machines have come a long way over the past several years. As such, it’s important to know which design features and functions to prioritise when updating your laundry room.

Smaller households and apartments might consider a compact combo washer/dryer unit, but for busier households that seem to need to run a load of laundry almost constantly, separate units might be a better fit.

The 4 most important things to consider when choosing a washing machine

1. Size

An average washing machine is likely to have a capacity of around 6kg to 7kg, which should be enough for a family of four, but bigger can be better. Newer models like the Samsung AddWash Front Loader can hold a load of up to 16kg, while LG’s Wash Tower will comfortably fit up to 17kg of laundry.

“With a larger capacity family-friendly machine, you don’t have to do as many loads and you use less power, less water and, importantly, less time,” says Gary Brown, senior brand manager, home appliances at Harvey Norman.

In addition to laundry capacity, you should also make note of the dimensions of your machine – especially if you have a compact laundry space. A smaller internal capacity doesn’t always mean the washing machine itself is on the compact side, so make sure you bring out the measuring tape.

“Front loaders can be installed under a benchtop, or used as a work surface themselves, making them more space efficient, which is increasingly important given our increasingly high density living,” says Choice team leader of whitegoods, Ashley Iredale.

2. Efficiency

With more and more of us veering towards eco-friendly living, making sure your machine is both water and energy efficient can have a major impact on both your quarterly electricity and water bills, as well as your environmental footprint.

“As front loaders work by picking up your clothes and repeatedly dropping them into the wash water they can get away with using very little water,” says Ashley. Top loaders may be easier to access but require more water and energy. “A toploader may be easier to access and will generally have a shorter cycle time, but will also use much more water than a front loader and be harsher on your clothes,” says Ashely.

“The energy consumption is rated with stars,” says Gary. “Premium brands can be four or four and a half stars, and that’s the gold standard.”

3. Noise

This is important if your machine is located in or near your living area or bedrooms. “The best machines have extra insulation or a dampener system for noise reduction,” says Gary.

If noise is an unavoidable issue, it might be worth looking into smarter washing machine units that you can start remotely from your phone. Being able to run a washing cycle while you’re out of the house is an easy way to avoid any noisy disturbance.

4. Smart tech

Washing machines just keep getting smarter and smarter, with newer models adding clever features that make them fit seamlessly into a smart home set up with ease.

LG’s newer machines, for example, come with LG’s ThinQ technology which will let you start and monitor cycles from your phone, while also allowing you to monitor your energy and water consumption.

Another important factor to look for is cycles that suit your lifestyle – newer machines have specific cycles for activewear and a steam-based refresh cycle, which can save on dry-cleaning.

Ashley at Choice warns us of not paying for technology you won’t genuinely be using. “Modern washing machines can offer a cornucopia of fancy features and cavernous capacity but they come at a cost, so if you’re not going to use wi-fi connectivity, steam functions, or enough space for a week’s worth of washing for a football team then don’t pay for them. “

The post How to re-grout your bathroom tiles appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Are your bathroom tiles looking a little worse for wear? Grotty grout is a common bathroom eyesore, but don’t feel like you need to call in the demolition team just yet. Whether your grout is stained with mildew or it’s old and falling out, a simple re-grout is guaranteed to elevate the entire look of your bathroom while also preventing water damage to your tiles. What’s more is that it’s totally DIY-able, meaning more money in your pockets.

That being said, you will pay in elbow grease. Depending on the size of your bathroom as well as the type of grout you’re freshening up, a re-grout can be achieved in as little as a weekend. Sealing in all your hard work will then take another few days to set in (more on that in the how-to).

Here’s everything you need to know about re-grouting your tiles for a complete bathroom refresh.

Types of grout

There are two main types of grout: sanded and unsanded. Sanded grout is best for joints larger than 0.3cm, whereas unsanded grout is superfine and will suit small gaps and marble tiles. And then there’s a third non-cementitious type of grout called epoxy grout which is much less porous than sanded and unsanded grout, making it ideal for kitchens. However, epoxy is a little trickier to install and is better left to the professionals.

Can I put new grout over old grout?

The short answer to this is no, as much time as it would save, it’s best not to slap on some new grout over your old grout. Whether your old grout is crumbling away or riddled with mould or both, removing it and starting afresh will ensure your new grout is clean and can properly adhere and set, increasing its longevity.

What you’ll need

How to re-grout your bathroom tiles

1. Firstly, you’ll need to clean your tiles and grout, especially if you’re dealing with mildew. While you may choose to remove the old grout, you don’t want to risk cross-contamination, so a thorough cleaning is essential. More often than not, natural cleaning agents like vinegar should get the job done, but you can also use more heavy-duty grout cleaning sprays and bleach (provided you wear the appropriate safety gear!).

2. Remove the old grout by chiselling away using a light tapping motion with a small chisel (or an old screwdriver) to chip away enough grout to expose the sides of the tiles. Keep in mind that you don’t want to go too deep otherwise you may damage the tiles and disturb the adhesive that’s holding them in place. After removing the old grout, clean all dirt and dust from the joints then vacuum.

3. Mix the grout according to the package instructions. It should have a similar consistency to pancake mixture.

4. Using a rubber grout float, apply a generous amount of grout between the tiles ensuring the gaps are completely filled. Don’t worry if you get some on the tiles – you can wipe it away later. Just be sure not to grout the expansion joints, which are the areas between the tile and other surfaces like the bath, walls, door and cabinets.

Start from the highest point and work your way down if you’re re-grouting a wall. Grout becomes thickened and unusable after 30 minutes so only make enough to cover your bathroom floor and work quickly.

Quick tip

5. Remove the excess grout by using the sharp edge of your rubber grout float then scrape away the grout from over the top of the tiles. Scrape in a diagonal direction to avoid dislodging the tiles. After tidying up the excess grout, wait 10 minutes while the grout starts to harden. Dip a sponge into a bucket of water and wring out any excess water. Clean the tiles with a sponge or a microfibre cloth until all of the grout residue is gone.

6. Stay out of your bathroom for 24 to 48 hours while the grout cures.

7. Finish the expansion joints by filling them with caulk in a colour that matches your grout. Smooth the caulk over the joints with a wet finger.

8. Finally, seal in all your hard work. If you’ve re-grouted with sanded or unsanded grout (epoxy doesn’t require sealing), a sealant will increase the longevity of your grout by protecting it from water damage, and in turn, bacteria growth. Once you’ve chosen the appropriate sealant, use a small paintbrush to apply it over your completely cured grout joints and then wipe away any sealer from the tiles to avoid staining.

9. Allow your sealant to set. For floor tiles, it’s recommended to wait a couple of days before walking on them, while shower tiles may require up to three days to fully cure.

10. Admire your brand new-looking tiles.

Contrary to popular belief, renovating your bathroom doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. While a gut and rebuild job can quickly become costly, thankfully, when it comes to this often-used space, the smallest change can instantly refresh.

It’s possible to make a tight budget work by simply keeping what you can and focusing on affordable, cosmetic changes. Even $1000 can go a long way with simple DIY updates such as painting, swapping out cabinetry handles, and adding floating shelves.

Read on to discover our four favourite ways to update your bathroom on a budget.

Adding an indoor plant or side table with beautiful essentials is an easy and quick update that will make a difference in your bathroom. (Photography: Jade Cantwell | Styling: Amber Lenette | Architect: Susi Leeton)

4 ways to update your bathroom for under $1000

1. Replace old and dated accessories and hardware

“Also high on the agenda is replacing dated vanity, tapware, lighting or accessories such as towel rails,” says Ania Forster, creative director at Gold Coast design studio Zephyr + Stone. If you can make the stretch, a heated towel rail is a great option – and something you’ll really appreciate come winter. “To really make an impact, concentrate on changing whatever is letting your bathroom down the most, or updating larger surface areas.” Be prepared to shop around to find the best products for the best price.

2. Repaint the tiles, vanities and walls

A coat of fresh paint will give you the biggest bang for your buck. “You can transform your bathroom for less than $600,” says Dulux brand manager Romy Nayagam. Look for specialist paints, such as the Dulux Renovation Range and White Knight Kitchen & Bathroom Range, which can be used to jazz up dated laminate, melamine, and timber cabinetry doors as well as floor and wall tiles.

3. Add or up the ante on your bathroom storage

Finally, banish clutter and create Zen-like calm with smart storage. “Look at freestanding shelving or trolley options, and maximise vanity storage with drawer inserts and storage containers,” says Amy Hare, an interior designer for Ikea Australia. “Also ensure there are enough towel rails for everyone – it seems obvious, but this is something people often forget.”

4. Style your bathroom and vanity

From there, aim to style like a pro. “Add indoor plants – they can make a huge difference to the look and feel of the space – and fluffy new towels, beautiful candles and soap dispensers,” says Frances Cosway, design director at Melbourne’s White Pebble Interiors. If your mirror is too small, consider swapping it for a larger style that bounces light around. “I prefer oval or round mirrors,” she says, “to break up all the straight edges that are traditionally in a bathroom.”

No budget to renovate? Create a new look for your vanity with fresh accessories, says Kaety Thompson of Sydney’s Oliver Thom:

 • Add some metal magic Brass or gold accessories add instant elegance.
 • Keep a consistent theme Create a cohesive look by pairing chrome tapware with accessories in a similar tone, such as pewter or brushed nickel, or brass with bronze accessories.
 • Explore the dark side Accessorise with dark colours, such as dark grey, for a sophisticated feel.
 • Anchor accessories Use trays to keep products such as your handwash, lotion and scent diffuser together. Have a separate area for hand towels.

The post 7 clever hacks for drying clothes on rainy winter days appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Drying your laundry when it’s wet and cold or worse, when it’s wet and humid, can be like watching paint dry on the wall – tedious and slow. But, with the right equipment and technique, damp and musty clothes will become a thing of the past – all without a clothes dryer.

In an ideal world, the weather would always be bright and sunny, providing us with the perfect climate to wash and dry our clothes. While we are lucky to enjoy plenty of glorious winter days with conditions conducive to drying laundry, there are plenty of days that are wet and dreary, and even so, we still have to do our laundry.

Here, we share some simple laundry hacks and clever buys to ensure you get your clothes dry and ready to wear in time (without turning your home into a shanty town), even while it’s pouring out.

1. Make the most of sunny days

This may sound obvious, but don’t ignore that load of washing if the sun is shining. You’ll regret when there’s a week of relentless rain and you can’t find a single pair of socks to wear.

Seize the day! If the sun is shining, put a load of laundry on the line.

2. Choose the right airer

In winter you absolutely need a good quality airer. It’s best to choose one based on the space you have. If you’ve got lots of space, select an airer with a large surface area, like Hills’ Four Wing Expanding Clothes Airer, which has double the surface area of traditional drying racks. This way, you can lay your items across two or more bars instead of just one, which will expose more of your garment for better airflow.

If you’re short on space, the best way to go is up. Vertical airers are fantastic for this purpose, as they make use of the room’s height, great when floor space is at a premium.

In addition, look at installing airer railings in your laundry room, the bigger, the better, as this creates more space around your clothes, letting them ventilate and dry quicker.

3. Location, location

Aside from choosing the right airer, placing them in the best area of your home is just as important. Set yours up in a room with great airflow, ideally in between two windows, which can be left open to create cross ventilation. Alternatively, you can position a portable fan a meter from the rack to ensure that air is constantly flowing through your clothes.

Railings in your laundry provide a handy spot to hang and dry clothes straight out of the machine.

4. Create a drying zone

Investing in a stylish airer or creating a designated ‘drying zone’ in the home means you don’t have to struggle setting up the airer and putting it away every time you need to dry your clothes indoors.

5. Avoid dampness with a dehumidifier

If you find that your clothes are always left with damp areas, set a timer to remind yourself to rotate your clothing halfway through dry time. This ensures that all sides get optimal and equal access to airflow.

You can also use a dehumidifier to your best to ensure that the room’s humidity is kept to a minimum while airing your clothes in order to prevent dampness and mould growth. The magic of a dehumidifier lies in its ability to – as the name would suggest – control a room’s humidity, removing it where necessary. And while, yes, this means your clothes will dry quicker and with less musty odours, it also brings with it a plethora of other benefits, including alleviating allergies, preventing mould growth, reducing air pollution and dust mites, lowering your energy bill (since it replaces the need for an a/c in some situations) and protecting your favourite homewares and furniture buys.

Some models like the Mitsubishi Electric EV38HR-A Dehumidifier even feature Intelligent Laundry Mode, which can speed up the drying process by removing excess moisture from the air and free you from having to rely on an energy-intensive dryer.

6. Hang wisely

The top of the airer gets the most air circulation, so hang your thicker garments there. Leave the bottom rungs for your thinner and smaller garments as they take less time to dry. Closely stacked racks are perfect for small garments that are high in volume, such as baby clothes or underwear.

If all the railings have been used up, hang your clothes on coat hangers and place them on the outside rails of your airer. Aside from saving you space, it also saves time as you can pop them right into your wardrobe when they’re dry.

7. Invest in a clothes dryer

If staying on top of the laundry heap in winter feels impossible, it may be time to invest in a clothes dryer or washer/dryer combo.

These days, there are plenty of affordable washing machines on the market like Kogan’s 10kg/6kg washer dryer combo which retails for just $789. If energy efficiency is a concern, be sure to look out for a heat pump dryer. Heat pump dryers may cost more to buy upfront, but will save you money in running costs over the long-term.

For those of us who prefer to use a hills hoist for the bulk of the year, choosing the best clothes dryer can seem like a daunting prospect. But a quality clothes dryer can make laundry day a breeze, so it’s worth taking your time to select the right one for your needs and your laundry room.

For those of you who prefer to use the dryer sparingly, it’s worth considering a combo washer/dryer unit, but for larger households, there’s no denying the incredible convenience of having a machine dedicated just to the task of drying. That’s why we’ve curated our edit of our top units that are worth considering below.

2024’s top clothes dryers

What are the different types of clothes dryers?

Condenser dryers

There are two main types of dryers on the market, and both of them have their strengths and weaknesses in different areas. Condenser dryers (also known as vented dryers) are the most common type available, while heat pump dryers are the relatively newer kids on the block.

Condenser dryer units tend to be more affordable and budget-friendly to buy when compared to heat pump dryers. The units essentially function by pushing hot air into the drum which then soaks up the moisture in your clothes before pumping it out through a vent. This design means that condenser dryers require external venting which can result in condensation in the house and foggy windows.

Heat pump dryers

“Heat pump dryers on the other hand are a much more efficient way to dry your clothes in contrast”, says Brad Reed, the Senior Marketing Manager of Home Appliances at LG Australia. “The process is much more gentle as it uses lower temperature air, and the machines don’t require external venting.”

Heat pump dryers do take longer to dry your clothes when compared to condenser dryers, but it is also more energy-efficient due to its usage of lower temperatures.

Dryer features to consider:

 • Capacity and size: How much space do you have in the laundry? How big is your family? Know which size will suit your space and lifestyle.
 • Energy efficiency: Dryers have a fairly high consumption rate. Go for the most energy efficient machine possible.
 • Time efficiency: The amount of time a dryer takes to dry a load will depend on the side of the drum. The larger the drum, the faster the drying cycles. If speed is important to you, you’ll need to look at machines with larger drums.
 • The smarts: Extra features include auto sensors, eco cycles, steam cycles and sanitation cycles. Make sure you feel comfortable with the settings before splashing your cash.

]]>
Though renovating your home is always an exciting time, fitting out your bathroom is arguably one of the most stressful (and expensive) parts.

Achieving a timeless aesthetic is just as important as the functionality of the space. From figuring out the perfect layout to choosing the right fittings and fixtures, each design decision requires careful thought and research to ensure you create the bathroom of your dreams – and one that won’t date before you’ve even had a chance to settle in.

From timeless tapware designs to simple styling ideas, these luxurious updates are guaranteed to give your bathroom timeless appeal.

1. Eye-catching accessories

Cool white marble and ample natural light create a calming atmosphere in this space. Gunmetal tapware, paired with sleek black hardware, contrasts beautifully with the marble countertop and highlights the dark tones in the terrazzo flooring.

2. Open shower space

Historically, shower spaces have been compact and closed off, taking up just enough space to be functional without imposing on the rest of the bathroom. More recently, the open-plan, resort-style shower is experiencing a surge in popularity. Consider an open floor plan and walk-in shower to maximise the size of your bathroom, as well as effortlessly modernising the space.

3. Bespoke window coverings

Privacy is crucial in a bathroom, and it’s important to weigh up whether your choice of window coverings can withstand the moisture levels in this particular space. For a quality finish and low-maintenance window covering, Australian Made Luxaflex® PolySatin® Shutters are the classic solution. Ideal for wet areas such as bathrooms and laundries, they are backed with a 20-year warranty.

4. Excess mirrors

It’s one of the oldest design tricks in the book, but incorporating multiple mirrors into a room will make any space feel larger. Mirrored cabinetry in a bathroom looks chic and, let’s face it, you can never have too much face-level storage or room to do your hair and make-up.

Mirrors help to bounce light around a room and make the space feel bigger. (Photo: Faucet Strommen)

5. Statement taps

There is a wide range of different tapware finishes on offer these days — from brass to rose gold, gunmetal, chrome, matte black and more — and while aesthetics are certainly a consideration, it’s also important to keep in mind the longevity of the design. While brass and matte black tapware have been popular in the past few years, chrome has made a recent resurgence and is touted as the most timeless of finishes.

6. Natural textures

If you’re looking to create a minimalist, streamlined look in your bathroom without it feeling sterile, be sure to inject warmth by incorporating natural materials such as timber or textured stone. In this instance, the custom timber vanity provides some much-needed relief from the crisp white walls while adding to the contemporary coastal aesthetic.

7. Indoor greenery

Incorporating[indoor plants into your bathroom has to be the easiest and most affordable way to turn the space into a lush and luxe oasis. Whether it’s a small fern or a statement fiddle-leaf fig, a suitable plant will add a verdant pop of colour to any wet area.

Plants not only look great in your wet spaces but can also have added health benefits. (Photography: Maree Homer)

Do top loaders wash better than front loaders?

There are benefits to both front loading and top loading washing machines when it comes to effective washing. If you are looking for an option that is more commonly water efficient, then the front loader may be the machine for you. However, the benefit of the top loader is that you will achieve a thorough wash with every load. Though the top loader can use more water, clothing and other apparel are exposed to a longer soak, ultimately sterilising items for a longer period.

What lasts longer front loader or top loader?

On average the top loader washing machine lasts longer. Often featured in top loader machines is a central agitator that can be easily accessed to clean and maintain, ultimately ensuring optimal performance and longevity of the machine.

Budgeting for a bathroom renovation is no easy task. You need to consider how much money you want to spend, the cost of new bathroom accessories, and how to achieve a look that’s both family-friendly and attractive. And this doesn’t even include organising your tradies and accounting for any issues with your timeline.

After all, bathrooms are no longer just functional spaces. They’re retreats, places for pampering, and some are not unlike day spas in their luxury touches and finishes. So, how much does a bathroom renovation cost? Here’s how to create a bathroom you’ll want to spend time in — whatever your budget.

Custom-made elements such as the custom mirror in this renovated Queenslander’s powder room can raise costs.

How much does a bathroom renovation cost?

The golden question: how much should you spend on a bathroom renovation? Well, how long is a piece of string? A number of factors come into play when planning a bathroom reno, such as room size, cost of materials, hardware, permits and labour. It can also come down to design specifics: are you installing a bath? Floor-to-ceiling tiles? A custom-made vanity?

According to HiPages, this can mean a range from anywhere between $8000 and $35000, or more. Plus, a 10-20 per cent buffer should be allowed for. However, stats released by the ABS suggest that people are generally spending less, with the value of total building approvals falling 5.9 per cent in March 2023.

Sometimes, builders will quote per square metre for renovations. HiPages suggests that this can fall somewhere between $2300 and $4600 per square metre for a bathroom, but again, it really depends on the materials and specs you’ve opted for.

Low-cost bathroom renovation

BUDGET: $2000 to $7000

Put down the tiling tool kit. As you have probably guessed, there is not a lot of room in this price bracket for remodelling and you’ll almost certainly have to keep all of your plumbing and electrics in place. But there are still plenty of affordable updates to try. “You can paint the tiles, change the vanity, update shower accessories and sometimes even paint the bath,” according to Oscar Merhebi from Eternity Kitchens and Bathrooms.

If you want to add some new accessories, go for a new toilet roll holder, mixer taps, a fresh vanity, or a new shower head. It’s also important to pay attention to clean lines and continuity, according to owner of Interiors By Cason, Noelene Cason. “Wall-mounted vanities with drawers create clean lines and provide good storage, while shaving cabinets are good for storage and easy to access,” says Noelene. “Look around for ex-demo showroom stock items for savings.” She also adds that extractor fans and heat lamps are also a must in every bathroom, as are LED downlights, which are reasonably priced these days.

Tiling part-way up the wall instead of floor-to-ceiling can help to save bathroom reno costs, like in the bathroom of this Scandi-style home.

Mid-range bathroom renovation

BUDGET: $8000 to $16,000.

Bigger jobs, such as ripping out old tiles and replacing them with chic new ones, are doable in this price bracket. “What it really comes down to is the accessories you choose, what brand you want to use and how lavish you want to be,” says Oscar. “The cost of accessories are scalable though.”

At this price point you can start to incorporate a little luxury. “Frameless and semi-frameless shower screens create a feeling of clean lines and space,” says Noelene. “Introduce a feature tile for a section of one wall or a whole wall depending on cost, either within the shower or behind the vanity.”

“Wall lights placed either side of the vanity mirror bring elegance to a room, while in-wall cisterns for toilet suites are a great way of creating more floor space,” she adds. “If the room allows for it, standalone or back-to-the-wall baths creates style and luxury.”

A larger bathroom, such as this beautiful blue one, will require a bigger budget: more tiles, more plumbing, more space to fill.

Luxury bathroom renovation

BUDGET $16,000 to $45,000+

The luxury bathroom budget is a thing of a beauty, with large demolition projects, total layout changes and complete overhauls now possible.

“You can add more features like heated floors, a spa bath, additional lighting and any other trimmings you think will make your bathroom luxe,” says Oscar. “You can start to look at big brands, such as Dorf, and some higher-end features, such as free-standing baths, which can cost around $12,000 alone.”

This is also the time to opt for luxury materials, such as porcelain or stone tiles or glass mosaics as feature walls, or adding in extras like heated towel rails or underfloor heating. You could also go for custom-designed vanities, with either marble or stone tops and wash basins.

“Built-in LED strip lighting also creates mood lighting and illuminates floors for night lighting,” says Noelene. “Depending on the size of the bathroom and its windows, dressing the window with either sheer curtains, blinds or shutters will bring a feeling of indulgence to the space.”

How much does each trade cost for a bathroom reno?

 • PLUMBING: Expect to pay a call out fee of between $60 and $100, and hourly rates between $100 and $150.
 • TILING: Tiling can range from between $35 and $120 per square metre – not including the cost of the tiles themselves.
 • BATH INSTALLATION Plumbers charge $350 upwards to replace and fit a bath.
 • SHOWER SCREEN INSTALLATION A basic shower screen will set you back around $400 for installation, but frameless can cost up to $600.
 • WATERPROOFING: This can cost anywhere between $500 and $750 for an average-sized bathroom.

It may be a hardworking space, but that doesn’t mean your laundry has to skimp in the style department.

Creating the perfect laundry is easier than you think. Whether you’re opting for a European-style kitchen/laundry or a standalone space, or are considering adding it to your master bathroom, a designated laundry zone will help you keep your home tidy.

Not sure where to start with your laundry? We asked Rebeka Morgan and Kribashini Hannon, founders of the BuildHer Collective to share their top tips and ideas on creating a practical and stylish space.

“The once-forgotten laundry is back, and with a bang,” explain the pair. “Today, we see it being a space that is super functional and beautiful. This important room is now receiving its share of the buzz and increasingly fitted with ‘jewellery’ to match.”

Here are some of our favourite laundry ideas to create the space of your dreams.

How deep should a benchtop be?

The ideal depth for benchtops in a laundry is usually between 600mm and 700mm. One of the key factors that will determine this is the appliances. If you have an underbench washing machine and dryer, they will need to fit neatly under the bench, with enough room to form the tap connections.

Another factor to consider is the sink or laundry trough that integrates with the bench depth. If you use a ceramic farmhouse sink, often the tap will sit behind the bowl, so you need enough space for this.

Plus, don’t forget to allow for clearance on either side of the appliances and sometimes above. Most of the time you’ll need 30–50mm on either side, but check the whiteware specs and installation guides during the design phase.

How big should a laundry be?

If you are building new, the location and size of the laundry are super important. Generally, these spaces are between 1800mm and 2400mm wide – this gives you enough space for the appliances and sinks on one wall, while the other wall can be for shelving or hanging storage and circulation space.

With that said, if you are renovating, you may need to compromise on the size and depth of the room, based on the existing space you must work within. Either way, measure twice to be sure!

Long view If possible, locate your laundry in a spot with good access and a pleasant outlook to enjoy while you’re folding clothes.

(Photography: Dylan Lark)

How can I make my laundry room more efficient?

A walkway of between 900mm and 1200mm will usually be sufficient to help with the use of integrated items such as ironing boards or drying cabinets.

Also, think about the workflow in the laundry in terms of space and laundry hampers. Rebeka has four in her laundry – one for clean laundry to be folded and put away, one for general washing, one for whites, and one for towels and bedding.

What is the best way to organize a laundry?

Storage is so important, but how much do you need? Write a list of all the things you keep in your laundry, as this will inform what is best for overhead storage and elsewhere. The list will probably be bigger than you imagine.

Think about the overhead storage of chemicals to keep them away from children, and whether these are things you want to see on open shelves or in overhead cabinets. Overhead hanging rods work well – for storing or drying items.

How to save money on a laundry renovation

You can save on the level of finish here. Rather than a full laminate on the insides of cabinets, use standard melamine.

Save on tiling by not tiling the walls to full height – just the floor and a small skirting. Buy wire storage systems if you can’t afford new joinery, although Ikea has affordable cabinetry.

What to splurge on

I [Kribashini] think you should splurge on the quality of your washing machine and dryer, your iron and your storage solutions. But also consider your individual needs. I have a fantastic iron with a water base, but it is large and bulky and I won’t use it if I have to get the board out. I’m always rushing around, so having the iron out is important for convenience.

But honestly, it’s unsightly and takes up so much space! Other items to splurge on are a great sink and storage, which will

add useability and functionality.

If you are building, you’ll have the potential to resolve all your laundry issues with the new design. If you’re renovating, you may need to compromise features to suit the space you have.

Think about high-end touches, such as gorgeous cabinet handles (you only need a few in a laundry space). You could also add an expensive tile or stone you love for the splashback – if it’s a small quantity, you may be able to buy a cheap offcut.

Equal measures Incorporating elements used elsewhere in your home will give the space more design cred.

(Photography: Dylan Lark)

Other things to consider

A laundry can be considered a wet area, so make sure that the new plasterboard behind your appliances and at tap penetrations is fully waterproofed.

You may also like to consider storage for pet food and other related items. And if the trough or sink will be large enough to wash your pet, or sporting gear and other muddy items.

For obvious reasons, families value full-scale laundries and often look for this when buying a house. In apartments, however, having a compact laundry off the hallway, as in a lot of European homes, is perfectly acceptable. Smarter appliance choices like opting for a combo washer/dryer can also help when working with compact spaces.

Ticking off these factors will create a laundry that’s super fit for purpose…

 • Sufficient ventilation
 • Enough circulation space
 • Natural light (if possible)
 • External door for access (if possible)
 • Durable flooring
 • Ample storage
 • Bench space for folding
 • Good-quality appliances with high ratings for energy consumption and water usage
 • Dryers vented to the outside if required (based on model and type)
 • Full-height cupboard for brooms, mops and vacuum cleaner
 • Doors to conceal the laundry if it is in a bathroom, garage or hallway

20 of the best laundry ideas

Photography: The Palm Co

Just in case this country-coastal laundry room didn’t grab you with its looks alone, it boasts a bunch of functionality. At one end, integrated hanging space and a timber bench create ease of use, and at the other, a built-in bench seat by the door provides a space to take off dirty shoes.

Photography: Eve Wilson | Styling: Deanne Penberthy Jolly

Located within a renovated 70s home in Fingal, this gorgeous green laundry carries the same design as the rest of the home, making it a seamless fit. The polished concrete floor adds functionality while the artwork adds a lived-in feel.

Photography: Alicia Taylor | Styling: Kerrie-Ann Jones

The home of design guru Kerrie-Ann Jones is all neutral hues and layered textures. Her peachy-toned laundry is no different and features Bejmat splashback tiles, brass tapware, stone mosaic flooring and decor touches.

Photography: Chris Warnes | Styling: Madeline McFarlane

Powder blue has a moment in the laundry room of this vivacious home in Bondi. Needing to withstand the demands of a family, the room is finished with lots of storage and hardy surfaces — and even includes a WC.

Design: Parker Studio | Styling: Jono Fleming | Photography: Jacqui Turk

The most extraordinary aspect of this Sydney laundry by interior designer Caitlin Parker-Brown is that it’s hidden in plain sight. Tucked away behind bifold doors in the kitchen/dining area of this renovated home, the design allows unobstructed access to a sink, appliances, and hanging space, courtesy of LED lights triggered by the doors’ opening and closing.

“The joinery runs the length of the room, making it seamless,” says Caitlin. “And the pale green V-groove doors with timber moon handles are elegant yet striking.”

Design: Carole Whiting Interior Design | Photography: Sharyn Cairns

With cool tones and a serene feel, this lovely laundry by Carole Whiting performs double duty in its Melbourne home. Well proportioned and filled with storage space, its functional features really shine.

Entry to the house from the garden happens here, so there’s a bench seat for taking off shoes and a concealed hanging rail over the sink that allows items to drip-dry unobtrusively, much like a mud-room set-up. The dark-hued walls are elegant and splash-friendly.

Design: Space Grace & Style | Photography: Nikole Ramsay

This compact laundry in Geelong was thoughtfully considered by SGS’s Rebecca Jansma so that every square centimetre can be used. The all-white palette ensures the room feels spacious and fresh, while terrazzo underfoot, stone on the benchtop and an unexpected brass shelf with strip lighting give it a contemporary look.

“Every bit of this room was mapped out to meet the owner’s requirements,” says Rebecca. “There’s a spot for everything, and all the shelves, drawers and hampers were customised to their contents. The LED strip light is on a separate circuit, so if you’re just popping in to drop some laundry into the hamper, you don’t need the full-room lighting.”

Design: Kate Walker Design | Photography: Armelle Habib

To emphasise the modern-farmhouse aesthetic of this property on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, interior designer Kate Walker specified hand-chipped black limestone floor tiles in a herringbone pattern and gave a calming rural-landscape art piece pride of place. Below it is plenty of room to fold clothes.

“People think you need to have appliances side by side or on top of one other,” says Kate, “but by having the washing machine on one side, you can take clothes from it, use the sink area to sort them and then dry as required, in the dryer or drying cupboard” – the latter a nifty addition that removes the need for pop-up clothes racks when the weather is wet.

Design: Amarot | Photography: Simon Whitbread

Fior Di Bosco stone takes centre stage in this Sydney laundry by Amarot’s Alexandra Marrotte, who used the material to zhoosh up this traditionally utilitarian zone. “The joinery next to the stone benchtop and splashback houses a washer/dryer stack with functional storage space above,” she says, adding that a separate broom cupboard to the right has its own door and powerpoint for easy vacuum-charging and cleaning-appliance use.

The timber cabinetry brings warmth to the cool scheme and is a nice point of textural difference. On another wall is a series of louvred windows, providing ample airflow when required.

Design: By Bruno | Build: Quilliam Building | Styling: Katy Bottomly | Photography: Laura Hannan

Just off the kitchen of a Melbourne home, this laundry has made it possible for the owner to put through a load of washing while cooking dinner. But despite being meticulously planned, there was a glitch in the build and necessity became the mother of invention for the project’s designer, Lena Bruno, halfway through.

“The client and I were looking forward to seeing show-stopping 150mm x 75mm straight-laid blush-pink tiles – and we were crushed when there were supply issues during construction,” says Lena. “With only the 100mm x 100mm option available, the client was hoping for a different look. So I came up with an unusual laying pattern that was drawn to scale and executed by the tiler – an on-the-fly solution that’s given the laundry its own personality.”

Design: The Designory | Photography: Jessie Prince & Cat Gerke

Hidden behind the beautiful doors of this sleek laundry – part of a home in the Byron Bay hinterland – is a huge linen cupboard and lots of storage. Also featured are baskets for sorting washing and a set of floating shelves for displaying treasures.

“The mix of materials is definitely the hero design element,” says The Designory director Melissa Bonney. “That includes the fossil limestone benches and splashback, the copper tapware and leather handles, plus timber features that tie in with the truss timber ceiling.” Better yet, this home is off the grid and eco-friendly appliances are fitted throughout, including an energy-efficient heat-pump dryer.

Design: Arent & Pyke | Styling: Claire Delmar | Photography: Anson Smart

Aiming to surprise and delight the owners of this Sydney laundry, the interior experts at Arent&Pyke chose a predominantly blue palette. “It injects a sense of fun into a space that is generally overlooked,” says designer Sarah-Jane Pyke. “Now it feels like a beautiful space you’d want to spend time in.”

The floor plan was also changed, to connect the laundry to the garden and to maximise styling opportunities, such as the tiled benchtop and blue tapware at the back. Proving this space has both beauty and brains, 5-star energy-rated appliances were selected for the finish.

Design: Studio Gorman | Styling: Karen Cotton | Photography: Prue Ruscoe

In the modern makeover of this Californian bungalow, Studio Gorman opted for multi-tonal blue kit kat tiles to create a striking feature splashback that complements the dark cabinetry. A discreet hanging rail helps to make the laundry process easier.

Design: Jillian Dinkel | Styling: Kerrie-Ann Jones | Photography: Pablo Veiga

In interior designer Jillian Dinkel’s Federation home this sun-soaked laundry space features striking grey cobblestone floor tiles and cabinetry as well as white exposed brick walls.

Styling: Jono Fleming | Photography: Anson Smart

The laundry in this cosy country farmhouse doubles as a mudroom, with the space opening to the rear of the property.

Design: Norsu Home | Photography: Lisa Cohen

In this Scandi-style family home the laundry room features a hanging brass rail which adds a touch of glamour against a backdrop of vibrant pennyround tiles and white cabinetry.

Styling: Simone Barter | Photography: Anastasia Kariofyllidis

The owners of this Palm Springs-style home opted for a clean and simple look in their laundry with white subway tiles for the splashback paired with grey cabinetry. Open floating shelves add a decorative touch, as does the timber hanging rail.

Styling: Hayley Jenkin | Photography: Mindi Cooke

The laundry space of this chic beach house in Mooloolaba leads towards the rear of the property and features black panels and a timber floating shelf.

The post The Block’s Tom and Sarah-Jane transformed their shed into a stylish guest studio appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
The original plan was to use the prize money they won on The Block to renovate their holiday home in Victoria’s Lake Eildon (where they also own a caravan), but unfortunately for Tom and Sarah-Jane, things didn’t quite work out that way.

Known for their bold style and proclivity for hard yakka (plus a nice $20,000 package from Beaumont Tiles), they decided to do it anyway. Three months’ worth of weekends and any spare time were spent at the property they’ve owned for five years, located three-and-a-half hours from Melbourne’s CBD.

Tom did a lot of the work himself – along with the help of Sharon and Ankur and Leah and Ash’s tilers from The Block, Imperial Tiling – and Sarah-Jane styled the space in the signature luxe-country look that saw the couple win room after room on The Block 2022.

Before and after: the space is unrecognisable after Tom and Sarah-Jane transformed it with their signature luxe-country style.

The house on the site was formerly rented out, but the couple decided to transform the two-storey shed into a stylish studio space for friends and family to stay in. The large bedroom is now wrapped in wainscoting, while a feature wall in a soft striped Grafico wallpaper makes the tonal bedding pop.

A wood-burning fireplace in the corner will ensure guests stay warm in the cooler climate and reminds us of the cosy and character-filled master bedroom they delivered on The Block. “How much does it hug you as soon as you walk in?” we can hear judge Shaynna Blaze saying.

Tom and Sarah-Jane picked a vanity from Beaumont Tiles and had it sprayed in Dulux’s Harpoon.

Dividing the large space into two, they were also able to add the biggest bathroom you’ve ever seen to the space. A toilet and shower are neatly tucked behind an opulent double vanity in the middle of the room, while a round bathtub sits by the window, so you can soak up the gorgeous views of the surrounding mountain ranges while you, well…soak.

The wainscoting continues in this space, which oozes Sarah-Jane’s modern country charm: sparkly chandelier and bold patterned floor tiles and all. Sheers delicately drape over the wall of windows, while the elevated position provides plenty of privacy.

Up next: they plan to renovate the main house on the same block, as well as make updates to their home in Melbourne. You can follow more of their journey at @tomandsarahjane.

Here’s where to shop the look

Navy Emily velvet bed

From $429 (usually $499), Temple & Webster

Boasting a hint of glamour with its velvet finish, rich colour and gold accents, this bedframe sets the tone in Tom and Sarah-Jane’s studio bedroom.

Grafico stripe linen wallpaper in Dusty Rose

$70-77/sqm, The Block Shop

Available in a textured canvas or smooth matte finish, this striped wallpaper from Grafico is super sweet and subtle and connects perfectly with the dusty pink paint colour found in the studio bathroom.

Brampton House Portland cushion in Charcoal

$12 (usually $20), Spotlight

Sarah-Jane has a knack for styling a bed that looks inviting and comfortable, and she’s used a few statement cushions from Spotlight in this room. While this isn’t the same as the pink stripe cushion she used, it’s a similar vibe.

Eden cotton bed sheets in Eggplant

From $80, Sheet Society

The bed has been styled in a tonal palette with dusty pinks, rich navy blues and these dark purple bed sheets. Available in a soft cotton or linen finish, you can buy them as a set or individually.

‘Sagittarius’ by Elle Pervez

$190, Bluethumb

There are two of Elle Pervez’s beautiful artworks hanging in the bedroom, both featuring zodiac constellations. They were selected because Tom and Sarah-Jane love how many stars you can see from the studio’s balcony at night in Lake Eildon.

Two-piece Smith marble nesting coffee table set

$549 (usually $599), Temple & Webster

Styled between two pink velvet chairs Sarah-Jane sourced from Facebook Marketplace, this nesting table set ties in with the other gold accents in the space and is the perfect place for setting down a morning coffee.

Cassidy decorative matt porcelain tile in Cloud

$134.75/sqm, Temple & Webster

Tom and Sarah-Jane chose a floor tile from Beaumont Tiles in the pattern Verona Gravity Matt, which they used in the entry hallway and bathroom. It’s an easy way to infuse a more traditional style in a modern way, and this tile from Temple & Webster will give you the same look if you’re shopping online.

brass-taps

Morgan Rund bath/basin wall mixer set in Brushed Gold

$499, Temple & Webster

Gold touches feature throughout the bedroom and bathroom, adding to the opulent style of the space. While Tom and Sarah-Jane chose the Misha wall basin set in Brushed Gold from Beaumont Tiles, if you’re looking to shop online, this set is similar and comes in a variety of finishes.

beaumont-marble-tile

09

Kensington brick ice mosaic tile in White

$43.57/sheet, Beaumont Tiles

Tom and Sarah-Jane opted for this smaller subway tile from Beaumont Tiles to style above their vanity. With a marble-like look and soft veining, it beautifully accentuates the grey pattern tiles on the floor.

The best steam irons to keep creases at bay https://www.homestolove.com.au/shopping/best-steam-iron-australia-24662/ Mon, 12 Feb 2024 06:24:35 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/best-steam-iron-australia-24662 Let off some steam - with the added bonus of crisp shirts.

The post The best steam irons to keep creases at bay appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
One household chore that is at the bottom of our list is ironing. Whether that’s the Sunday night rush of ironing your work shirts for the week ahead or smoothing out wrinkles in your favourite dress before heading out to a special event – finding time to keep wrinkles in our clothes at bay is, unfortunately, a troublesome and timely task.

One way to keep the time spent ironing to a minimum is to invest in an efficient and easy-to-use steam iron. Not revolutionary, we know, however, finding one that suits your needs and preferences will make this household task one that is slightly more enjoyable.

What to look for when buying a steam iron

There are a few key factors to consider when purchasing your new steam iron. From basic models to those with integrated ironing boards, and more, below are some things to consider when choosing a model to opt for.

Steam output

Finding a steam iron that allows you to control the amount of steam produced is vital – especially if you’re looking to iron a variety of fabrics. You may need more steam for heavy items or less when smoothing out wrinkles in sensitive fabrics such as silk or linen.

Soleplate

This is the part of the iron that will come in contact (or very close to) with your pieces of clothing. Ensure the soleplate of your steam iron is made of high-quality materials. A non-stick option is popular as they are easy to clean. Stainless steel is also a popular sturdy material for soleplates. It’s important to regularly maintain the quality of your soleplate – especially from any scratches or stains – to ensure it doesn’t damage your clothes when in use.

Capacity

This is how much water you can store in the water tank of the steam iron. A bigger capacity means less refilling. However, it may be more difficult to manoeuvre due to its weight. A clear water tank is also a great element to consider, as you’ll be able to see just how much water is left while you iron.

Auto shut-off

A safety measure like an auto shut-off feature for a steam iron, in our opinion, is a must-have – especially when life gets busy.

The best steam irons to shop in Australia

So, if the world of crease-less clothing (sans the hard work) tickles your fancy, below, we’ve rounded up the best steam irons that will make this tedious chore easy.

Philips PerfectCare Powerlife iron

$149 (usually $159), David Jones

Iron everything from denim to silk in one go with the Philips PerfectCare Powerlife steam iron. Equipped with the brand’s innovative OptimalTEMP technology, there’s no need to manually adjust the temperature of your iron anymore. Plus, with its SteamGlide Plus soleplate, gliding across creases is easier than ever.

Tefal TurboPro anti-calc steam iron

$189, Appliances Online

With a precision tip and continuous steam diffusion, the TurboPro steam iron from Tefal is a great choice for busy households. Its Turbo Boost technology provides steam propulsion that drives deep into stubborn creases, and its built-in calc collector allows for easy maintenance.

Braun TexStyle 5 Pro steam iron

$149, Myer

Designed with an ergonomic open handle for maximum comfort while ironing, the TexStyle 5 Pro steam iron by Braun features the brand’s top-of-the-line gliding soleplate that can glide over seams, buttons, pockets, zippers without a hiccup. Plus, with its Smart iCare mode that protects your clothes at a safe temperature, ironing your favourite garments is stress-free.

Braun Carestyle 7 Pro steam station

$303.20, Amazon

The Carestyle 7 Pro steam station by Braun provides professional ironing results in the comfort of your own home. It also comes with a handy and secure docking system, so the fear of tipping over a hot steam iron is no longer a worry.

Tefal IXEA Power All-In-One solution

$629, Bing Lee

If you have space in your home or laundry, this all-in-one ironing system from Tefal is well worth considering. The IXEA Power is an iron, steamer and sanitiser all in one. With its built-in smart board that can be adjusted to three different positions (think vertical steaming, horizontal ironing, and at 30° for special garments), keeping your shirts crisp and wrinkle-free is effortless.

Russell Hobbs Rapidsteam iron

$39, The Good Guys

One of the more affordable models in this list is the Rapidsteam iron from Russell Hobbs – but this doesn’t mean it compromises in quality. With 2400 watts of power and a handy anti-drip design, you can iron blouses, jeans and linens without a hitch.

The post 12 easy green swaps for your bathroom appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
It’s easy to fall back into old routines that don’t serve us – hello double espresso, farewell morning meditation – and nowhere is this more true than when trying to reduce our environmental footprint at home. In our bathrooms, we rely on the products we’ve always used. We love that deep-cleanse shampoo or those so-essential cotton balls. They’re all natural-ish after all, right? Becoming a more conscious consumer can start with just a few swaps. So, where do you start?

An eco-bathroom is a simple place to begin as we immerse ourselves in mindful consumerism. Brands that use no plastic, or recycled and recyclable materials, biodegradable materials (even bottles, hooray!) are on the increase, and your support will help them thrive. The less you keep buying bathroom products that use toxic materials, either in their packaging or in the products themselves, the faster companies will be forced to go another route. A simple boycott can have a big impact, and puts you well on the path to a low-tox, sustainable home.

It is possible to keep things sustainable in your bathroom. Avoid plastic and toxic materials wherever you can, as do the owners of this eco-friendly home in Tasmania.

10

How can I make my bathroom more sustainable?

An easy way to eco-maximise your bathroom is to address the products you already buy, and find more sustainable alternatives. Almost anything in your bathroom routine – from beauty to bathing and everything else – can be swapped out or tweaked to make a little more green. When looking to buy a new bathroom product, be careful of green washing – this involves companies making an unsubstantiated claim to deceive consumers into believing that their products are environmentally friendly.

Check ingredients lists, and pay attention to what you throw out – the more often you replace something the less likely it is to be a good choice sustainability speaking. Those cotton balls – yep, even the organic ones – would be better replaced with something you can wash with your clothes and use again and again, for years. Single use is the enemy of the earth, so avoid it wherever you can.

Use bar soaps as done in this house in Barwon heads instead of plastic pump bottles, or make those bottles biodegradable – made out of materials such as bamboo or sugar cane pulp.

The big-impact, easy swaps to make for a sustainable bathroom

 • Swap out plastic accessories such as your toilet brush, toothbrush holder, even your shower caddy for a sustainable choice such as bamboo.

 • Replace single-use cotton pads and cotton balls with a reusable option. Make them biodegradable, avoid all plastic (those tooth pickers often have plastic handles, so go for a bamboo, sugar cane or all-natural one), even in packaging.

 • Bamboo is the most resource-efficient plant on the planet – swap out your bath towels and face cloths for an incredibly soft and luxurious bamboo option.

 • Choose brands that offer refills instead of making you buy the whole pump bottle with pump or spray over and over again. Less plastic is a better choice, for the earth and your wallet.

 • Choose bar soaps, shampoos and conditioners so you never have to use a plastic bottle or refill again.

 • Avoid traditional toilet paper and go for something not made from virgin tree pulp. Most toilet paper brands use an incredible amount of water and electricity in production, and then the paper is wrapped in plastic, only to be thrown into the bin (and then the ocean, landfill, you know the drill). Use recycled toilet paper – don’t worry, just the paper is recycled – or bamboo is a better choice.

A beautiful bathroom doesn’t have to be huge. But when it comes to giving this important room serious panache, the vanity — the sink and cabinetry — is a way to create a focal point with style. It’s an easy tweak if you don’t want to go ripping up tiles in a reno, or it can play a major role in the new look you’re going to achieve.

The bathroom vanity is a crucial and functional hub by which we can perform our daily tasks. A bathroom cabinet provides valuable storage, and a vanity goes a long way to establishing the overall look of the bathroom. After all, even the most stylish bathrooms can be defeated by a common foe: the clutter created by bottles, soaps, toothbrushes, makeup and other toiletries left out on every available surface.

You can bet on red in this bathroom (specifically Dulux’s ‘Red Wine’). The curves of the custom vanity soften the look, as well as the peach basin by Nood. A brass tap from Phoenix Tapware matches the mirror frame, injecting some glamour, while coloured terrazzo tiles from Signorino add to the sense of fun.

(Photography: Martina Gemmola | Styling: Ruth Welsby)

The bathroom vanity gives us as chance to be creative, even without doing an entire bathroom renovation. You can either reflect the look of your entire home, or go a little out-there and do something different. You can add a striking stone or go for architectural curves or a cantilevered sink.

Many retailers have plenty of ready-to-install vanity options, or you can tweak the look, colour, benchtop material, and hardware according to your style. Or you can choose something a little more custom and then top it with a vanity basin you love. Some designers put a spin on the vintage dresser, with a sink on top and the tapware installed on the wall.

What type of bathroom vanity is best?

There are vanities that hang on the wall and there are stone behemoths that take pride of place in the room. There are double sinks and single sinks and sinks that span the width of the vanity. Bathroom cabinet finishes, benchtop and taphole options, plus the basins themselves all help create an individuality as much as they contribute to the wildly varied cost of these essential items.

Wood-fronted cabinets were a popular choice for vanities in 2023, slightly topping the other favourite choice, white. According to ABI Interiors, white and gold together have maintained their status as one of the most quintessential bathrooms colours for an elegant and refined space.

If you would rather avoid cutting holes and mounting vanity cabinets to the wall, an easier option is to add a freestanding piece of furniture.

The bold combination of Calacatta Viola marble, pink stucco walls and brass fittings and fixtures create a sense of whimsy in this striking powder room designed by Alexandra Brown of Alexandra Brown Interiors.

How much should I expect to pay for a bathroom vanity?

The bathroom vanity can have a big impact and look great without a cost blowout, but it’s also possible to spend on one little room what others might spend on an entire house renovation. Materials, the cost of labour — think laying intricate tiles — and how much you have to undo before you actually start creating a new bathroom, all impact the final price.

A marble bathroom vanity creates a jewel-box effect, and can add a lot of personality to the room. But it comes at a cost. A more budget friendly alternative is a non-custom vanity unit for which you can choose from a series of pre-determined sizes and materials. In Australia, companies such as The Blue Space, ABI Interiors and IKEA offer excellent and more affordable vanity ideas.

Ensuite bathroom design ideas continue to stimulate interior trends towards at-home luxury. Those lucky enough to enjoy two (or more) bathing spaces – one shared by the family and the other a calming adult sanctuary – tend to opt for different moods in each space.

It is fast becoming common for home owners and renovators to looking for small ensuite bathroom ideas to create a pair of bathrooms that ‘talk to each other’ stylistically, rather than being matched tile for tile, tapware for tapware.

Where a home’s main, or family bathroom must, above all else, be practical and contemporary, the privacy of an ensuite allows for bolder, more personal design choices to run wild.

If you’re thinking about updating your bathroom, you’ll certainly be inspired by this gallery of modern ensuite ideas.

What is in an ensuite bathroom?

Technically speaking, an ensuite is any bathroom that belongs solely to one bedroom, either connected via open walkway or door. The term ‘en suite’ is French, and means ‘afterward’ or ‘following’, but in English it was adapted to mean ‘connected’, hence its use for describing private bathrooms that stem off a bedroom.

The bathroom is one of the hardest workers in the house, requiring an array of functions condensed into a small footprint. Storage in the bathroom is therefore an extremely valuable commodity, and how you manage the space is of paramount importance.

Whether your vanity is stuffed full of expired products and needs a good declutter, or you’re looking for ways to add more storage cabinets and spaces for those spare toilet rolls, it may be high time for a mini wet-zone overhaul.

So, without further ado, read on for our expert tips on how to tackle bathroom storage cabinets – from below-sink to face-level.

The bathroom of this sustainably-built home in Blackheath is large enough to enjoy storage of just about every kind – from linen cupboards to open shelving and drawers.

Adjustable shelves and storage

The bathroom is the number one hub for all our hygiene, beauty and self-care products, which is why savvy and versatile storage options are a must when it comes to keeping everything organised. Even a compact bathroom can benefit from additional storage – you may just need to think outside the box. Portable products like the Kado Aspect mobile vanity with castors from Reece, or ones that retract when not in use like the Thermogroup Thermorail heated towel ladder from The Blue Space can add valuable extra usable space to any bathroom.

Bathroom vanity storage

Bathroom vanities are another area that can impact bathroom storage. They come in all shapes and sizes, but before you commit to one, make sure it adequately meets your storage needs. Many people fall into the trap of making a purchase based predominantly on aesthetics, but for vanities especially, storage is just as important. A wall-hung vanity with adequate storage (drawers or cupboard space) is ideal, especially in smaller bathrooms, as it will free up floorspace and give you more room to move.

Mirrored cabinets and face-level storage

Mirrored cabinets are great for face-level storage and don’t require a full renovation to install. Not only do they come in whole variety of shapes, styles and dimensions, the dual use of a mirrored cabinet serves two purposes in one, freeing up space elsewhere in the bathroom. We love the ADP Glacier Lite Shelf shaving cabinet from The Blue Space, which features additional exposed timber shelving on the side.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR BATHROOM WITHOUT A RENOVATION

Sometimes all it takes is a little decoration to improve storage in your bathroom. Accessories and bathroom decor are the perfect option if you’re not ready for a full-scale renovation. Wall-mounted accessories also help your bench space to remain clutter-free.

Built-in storage

Get clever when it comes to storage by building it into the walls of your bathroom with recessed shelving and cupboards. Try building recessed shelving into your shower wall, next to your bath or above the vanity.

Consider who will be using the space, and what they’ll be using it for. For example, a young family with small children to bathe might choose an inset bath over a freestanding one – this allows for the area around the bath to be customised, with room for built-in handy extra storage.

In-wall niches are still another continuing trend, either in the shower space or above inset baths – they are perfect little spaces for your go-to lotions and shampoo.

Vertical storage and linen cupboards

Vertical storage is also big in the bathroom right now, especially with our move toward small space living. It’s all about finding ways to maximise the space we do have and this includes products like tall linen cupboards, like the ADP Glacier Pro all-door tallboy from The Blue Space.

The pros and cons of trendy bathroom tapware https://www.homestolove.com.au/rooms/bathrooms-laundry/bathroom-tapware-finishes-2326/ Tue, 07 Nov 2023 08:30:00 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/bathroom-tapware-finishes-2326 Brass and copper, gold, nickel and black, brushed or not? Should you invest in 2023's most fashionable tapware? Take a closer look at the pros and cons of each.

The post The pros and cons of trendy bathroom tapware appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Not so long ago chrome was essentially the only bathroom tapware finish available. Now there are bold alternatives to suit any taste or budget.

From chic monochrome looks in black and white, to warmer metallic hues such as brass and copper; decorative tapware can provide an instant bathroom update and make a space stand out from the crowd.

Like any fashion statement, trendy tapware finishes aren’t for everyone. The good news for traditionalists: chrome is back as well.

We’ve rounded up some industry insiders to access their insights on the pros and cons of matte black, brushed and brass tapware finishes currently trending in modern bathrooms around Australia.

Matte-finish black tapware

Matt black tapware, combined with other black accents, can make a modern statement in a bathroom or kitchen but beware, it won’t suit just any style of room. Matt black tapware is best suited to modern, industrial or minimal designs. To create a cohesive look, tie the tapware in with other matt black details such as door hardware, windows and accessories.

Matte-finish black tapware is a bold punctuation point in this luminous bathroom by Flack Studio.

In this renovated terrace home black tapware complements a monochrome theme. A White Emperador marble basin and shelf were custom-made to be the heroes of the powder room. White subway tiles laid vertically on the walls helps to accentuate a sense of space, while a ceramic pendant light adds task lighting.

(Photography: Pablo Veiga | Styling: Claire Delmar | Story: real living)

Pros

 • “Graphic and masculine, matte black tapware is a bold bathroom look, yet also subtle and sophisticated with the right mix of materials,” says David Flack of Flack Studio.
 • “Like clothing, black goes with almost everything, and it is easily matched with white and chrome which is usually the predominant colour palette in the bathroom,” says Daniela Santilli, Bathroom Business Development Manager at Reece.

Cons

 • “Shows water and soap marks, and can be hard to maintain. May date over time,” says Kate Fitzpatrick of Auhaus Architects.
 • “Black can be overpowering if used in large quantities so use sparingly. Accents of black are extremely effective in bringing some drama into the bathroom without overwhelming the senses,” says Daniela.

Brass tapware

Brass tapware will add an air of elegance to any bathroom or kitchen. Brass works well with a number of different aesthetics, from boho-luxe to modern-country styles. For a more modern look, opt for polished brass.

Pros

 • “A combination of both plated and organic brass tapware finishes will emphasise natural and earthy elements. The organic finishes are more environmentally friendly as well!” says Andrew Shirtliff, General Manager at Astra Walker.
 • “Brass is warm finish, lending itself to a natural material palette. If left to patina, it creates a beautiful industrial feel, but polished or brushed brass is also beautiful, and pair very well with black joinery,” says Kate.

Cons

 • “Brass is a very specific look and feel and can be viewed as too rustic or old fashioned so it’s not for every bathroom style,” says Daniela.
 • “Can lose its lustre over time, can also lose its effect in a space when overused,” says David.

Shelley Craft has designed this bathroom for ABI Interiors using brushed copper tapware.

Brushed tapware

Whether your preference is brushed nickel, brass, copper or chrome, any kind of brushed metal is a great option for those looking for a timeless and subtle finish and is available in both traditional and modern tapware styles.

Brushed nickel tapware fades into the back in this Edwardian renovation

.

Pros

 • “Contemporary and professional tones for a classical bathroom,” says Andrew.
 • “Brushed tapware has a natural affinity with other matt and natural finishes and doesn’t show marks easily!” says Kate.

Cons

 • “A brushed finish is subtle so there is a chance it won’t be as vibrant and stand out in the bathroom space. A brushed rose gold or gun metal can combat this and give the bathroom that x-factor you’re looking for,” says Daniela.
 • “Potentially a little uninteresting, low on wow factor,” says David.

Chrome tapware

Chrome is back, bringing its consistent style, easy-to-clean benefits and unbeatable price point to stylish kitchens and bathrooms everywhere. Chrome taps have been around for decades and remain stylish. They are both sleek and modern. When you’re updating your kitchen, bathroom or laundry, you’re bound to be weighing up price point as well as practicality. Chrome finish taps tick both these boxes.

Chrome taps – such as this classic chrome tapware by ABI Interiors – suit different looks and are always sleek and elegant.

(Source: ABI Interiors)

Chrome tapware works beautiful in this bathroom where the bath and wall clad in porcelain terrazzo tiles from National Tiles. Fossil basin from Schots Home Emporium is set on an Ikea ‘Godmorgon’ vanity with a top in limestone from Apex Stone.

Pros

 • Chrome is one often of the more affordable tap options.
 • Its reflective surface also makes it easier to clean than many other colours.
 • Its neutral hue makes it work well with almost any interior style.

Cons

 • Some consider chrome to be the cheaper, less stylish option. While chrome certainly went out of fashion, it’s making a comeback so think hard before you pull out old chrome tapware you have.

As an in-demand interior designer, Briellyn Turton has to be across the most innovative, smart and practical home trends. Designing for both residential and commercial clients, Briellyn is always looking for new ways to create bespoke spaces that are as easy and enjoyable to live in, as they are beautiful.

That means taking every room’s purpose into consideration from the get-go. Take the laundry as an example, with 46 per cent of Australians surveyed saying they wished theirs was nicer [1]. It’s one of the hardest working spaces in the home, yet it’s often regarded as just a utility room. Clunky design and dated appliances can make laundry a punish, costing you valuable time that could be spent enjoying life.

That’s why the rise in intelligent laundry is a gamechanger, which could help save on time, energy consumption and mental load says Briellyn. “Laundry may be a daily chore for some, but by creating a stylish, smart and sophisticated space, it might become a cathartic activity you find yourself looking forward to.”

“The simple, flat design, paired with the tempered glass door allow it to seamlessly blend into the room’s aesthetics, eliminating the need to hide anything behind a closed door,” says Briellyn.

(Photo: Supplied.)

Smart and stylish wash options

“Gone are the days of the standard white appliances — there are so many chic options available now,” says Briellyn, noting Samsung’s Bespoke AI Laundry range as her pick for its sleek good looks and AI technology that could help save on energy and water usage, detergent, and your sanity by automating manual tasks. The Bespoke AI front load washer comes in generous 9kg, 12kg and 18kg capacities and with its 5-star energy rating, it’s a smart choice for busy households.

To help lessen the load, Australians can also look to increasing their washing efficiency with AI Wash Cycle – a smart feature that washes clothes thoroughly and gently with less water and detergent [2]. It does so by detecting the weight and softness of the fabric in each load and analysing the levels of water to help Australians achieve results and turn laundry day from a chore to a breeze.

The Bespoke AI™ Washer offers the new Bespoke AI™ Front load washer range offers BubbleWash™, which turns detergent into bubbles that quickly get absorbed into the laundry and can help improve performance of cold-water cycles.

Improve drying efficiency

The environmental impact of clothes dryers depends on frequency of use, energy source, energy efficiency, heat pump and more. And the amount of time you spend hanging clothes to dry versus using the dryer is also as variable. Smart clothes dryers can help, when hanging to air dry is not an option.

The Digital Inverter Compressor technology in the Bespoke AI Dryer heats the air, and can help provide a gentle dry while maintaining a 9-star energy rating across its three models [3]. Steam technology and a sanitising cycle utilising high temperatures do more than just dry, they also help to eliminate common bacteria. The perfect antidote to teenage boys who refuse to shower after a gym session [4].

Even better, you can do your laundry, monitor its power usage, set up your favourite cycles and even order detergent from the palm of your hand, via the Samsung Smart Things app.

Intelligent design plus style says Briellyn on Samsung’s black and white colour range. “These products are truly designed to be seen and can become a minimalistic design feature of the room.”

(Photo: Supplied.)

Don’t iron, refresh with air

If you’d rather do anything but iron, you might be among the 55 per cent of Australians surveyed who claim to never iron any of their clothes [5]. Yet 46 per cent buy for quality, choosing clothing designed for durability and longevity [6]. Refreshing between washing could be the answer to extending the lifecycle of your clothes, with less frequent washing, fewer trips to the dry cleaner and—praise be—less need to iron.

“This mirrored-finish cabinet can refresh your clothes in as little as 20 minutes; ideal for busy people who struggle to squeeze in a trip to the dry cleaner,” says Briellyn.

(Photo: Supplied.)

A clothing refresher is a relative newcomer to modern laundries, but the Samsung Bespoke Mirror AirDresser is a must-have according to Briellyn. Short on space in the laundry? No problem, she says. “It can be placed in the mud room, a walk-in wardrobe, a bedroom or a lobby and can hold up to five pants, five jackets and a long zone for dresses and coats, so you can freshen more clothes at once.”

7 mistakes to avoid when using bleach https://www.homestolove.com.au/rooms/bathrooms-laundry/mistakes-to-avoid-when-using-bleach-22732/ Thu, 12 Oct 2023 01:40:00 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/mistakes-to-avoid-when-using-bleach-22732 And how to use the tough chemical safely.

The post 7 mistakes to avoid when using bleach appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Bleach is amazing. There’s nothing like it to do a clean sweep of even the hardest-to-move mould and stains and all manner of household cleaning, disinfecting and laundering.

Make no mistake however, chlorine bleach is a powerful chemical. As such, bleach should be used with care to avoid accidents and damage to some surfaces and other items around the home.

MISTAKES TO AVOID WHEN USING BLEACH IN THE HOME

Bleach – when used with caution – can be used to lighten timber.

(Photographer: Armelle Habib | Styling: Julia Green | Story: House & Garden)

1. Using bleach on wooden surfaces

Unless it’s your intention to lighten the timber, chopping boards, benchtops and dining tables should all be kept well clear of bleach or products that contain it as a cleaning agent. Even when diluted, using bleach can leave stains and raise the grain of the timber. Instead, use natural or specialised wood cleaners that contain ingredients to nourish and protect the timber surface.

2. Using bleach on stainless steel

Bleach can be corrosive to some metals, including stainless steel, and repeated or prolonged use of it to clean benchtops and surfaces can result in pitting and staining. Instead, clean your stainless steel benchtop regularly with warm soapy water and wipe dry afterwards. To remove stubborn marks, drop dishwashing liquid directly onto the mark and use a soft, wet cloth to soak, then rub away. Dry with a soft cloth.

Stone benchtop can be cleaned with bleach – in moderation.

(Photographer: Maree Homer | Story: House & Garden)

3. Using bleach to clean granite or stone benchtops

Being a natural surface, stone benchtops are susceptible to stains and marks. Bleach is not the answer, however. Worse is the use of a corrosive brush or scourer together with bleach, which will result in more damage to the surface. Instead, clean your benchtops regularly with warm soapy water and for tough stains and the occasional deep clean, use a speciality stone cleaner.

4. Using bleach to clean or sanitise food

Liquid bleach is too strong a chemical to use on fresh food as a disinfectant. Wash fresh produce before storing it by running under cold water and wiping clean. If you feel the need for a more thorough clean, a solution of baking soda and water will do the job.

There are also some amazing natural cleaning solutions you could try.

(Photographer: Craig Wall | Styling: Imogen Roache)

5. Mixing bleach with other chemicals

We’re all for making your own natural cleaning products – the results can save money and make for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly household. Never mix household bleach with other chemicals however. In particular, chemicals that contain ammonia, such as window cleaner, toilet cleaner and many all-purpose cleaners. Acids, such as lemon juice or vinegar, as well as rust remover are also dangerous and could produce poisonous and even explosive gases. Instead, dilute liquid bleach with a ratio of nine parts water to one part bleach for a solution that is most effective for killing germs.

Above all, use proper ventilation when cleaning or disinfecting with bleach and store it safely and secured out of reach of children.

Tips for Using Bleach in your Laundry

1. Read the Label

Check the garment label before laundering; some fabrics cannot be washed using liquid household bleach (sodium hypochlorite). If liquid household bleach is not recommended, you can use a colour-safe (oxygen) bleach to help remove stains and odours. Also read the cleaning product label. Some detergents have colour-safe bleach or bleach alternative built into the product. However, remember that these products do not disinfect.

2. Test first

Dip a cotton swab in the bleach/water solution and dab on an inside seam. If the fabric colour remains, then you should be safe.

3. Start small

Lay the stained section of the garment flat and be sure there not layers of fabric or anything underneath that can be affected. Work from the outer edge of the stain in, rinse with fresh water when the stain is gone.

4. Bleaching the whole load

Read the label on the bleach product to determine the amount to use when adding bleach to an entire load of laundry. Consult your washing machine user manual to see if you should add the bleach to the drum or to a special dispenser drawer or section.

Be careful when working with bleach in your laundry.

When it comes to creating a luxurious bathroom there’s a number of clever design features you can incorporate that will transform your space into the ultimate sanctuary. Top of the list is the recent rise in popularity of walk-in showers which seamlessly blend form and function.

Beloved for their sleek and slim-line look as well as their easy-to-clean nature, a walk-in shower is an easy way to transform your bathroom no matter how big or small your space, and is the perfect addition to any modern bathroom.

“The ability to wander into your shower without having to contend with additional steps gives the space a natural and relaxing flow,” says interior designer Nina Maya. “Walk in showers can be created to minimise visual impact, letting the rest of your aesthetic take centre stage.”

Walk-in showers were used in all three of the bathrooms at the Barefoot Bay Villa, creating a sleek and sophisticated look.

A little planning beforehand ensures a seamless and truly frameless finish,” says design studio The Designory’s Melissa Bonney. “One of our favourite ways to create the perfect walk in shower is to recess the shower screen in to the tiles.”

“I like to use floor to ceiling glazing for uninterrupted views, coupled with minimal fixtures in a finish that matches the choice of tapware,” says Nina. In creating the perfect walk-in shower, she recommends “working with brands such as Stegbar that create and fit bespoke options that are tailor made for your space.”

12 ways to transform your bathroom with wall art https://www.homestolove.com.au/rooms/bathrooms-laundry/bathroom-wall-art-25162/ Wed, 20 Sep 2023 01:00:00 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/bathroom-wall-art-25162 A personality-driven home begins in the bathroom.

The post 12 ways to transform your bathroom with wall art appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
After an era, an aeon, of white-on-white and beige-on-neutral in home design, there’s been a growing desire for personality-driven homes. For homes that feel like homes. Art has become a powerful tool for transforming a house into a more interesting, exciting place to be. And there’s no reason to leave wet zones like the bathroom and laundry out of it. Bathroom wall art can transform this room into a place for quiet reflection as well as reflecting you and your unique personality.

With the rise-again of wallpapers and ugly-slash-beautiful, bold marble and bright colours, the bathroom has become a “safe space” to experiment with bringing personality in. Your favourite wall art – whether it’s framed, painted on, or a sculpture pushed against a wall or hung up – can help create an inspiring zone in which to prepare for the day ahead, unwind.

There’s nothing new in the idea of hanging art in the bathroom. King Francois I of France is believed to have purchased the Mona Lisa, the famous painting by Leonardo Da Vinci, to hang in his bathroom in the palace at Fontainebleau. It now hangs at the Musee du Louvre in Paris, but the man was onto something. It’s easy to employ wall art in unique ways in the bathroom. Here’s how.

Is it OK to put artwork in the bathroom?

Better to ponder the Mona Lisa’s smile than your iPhone while spending time in the bathroom. But hanging art in the most humid, contentious and coveted zone in your house is not without its risks either.

Humidity is not an art lover. The biggest issue you will face when hanging art in the bathroom is humidity. Moisture trapped under the glass can seriously damage the artwork or the matting behind it with mould, mildew general warping. If you’re worried about humidity – and do be if things tend to get steamy when you shower – then go for inexpensive pieces, or posters that can be more readily replaced. Hot tip: let fresh air in. Your partner was right, you need to open up the windows and put on the exhaust fan when you use the bathroom to let your wall art (and any humans in the vicinity) breathe easily.

Art can ruin the vibe. Hanging a vintage poster or a still life you picked up could add just the right amount of intrigue and colour to the bathroom, but it’s also easy to hang anything and everything you’re not content with putting on the walls in the other rooms in your house. Don’t use the bathroom as an art-dump zone, lest it turn from a place of serenity and calm to one of deep personal jarring. Avoid setting up an elaborate display, and instead keep things simple and allow one theme, idea or colour to shine and enhance the room as a whole.

Like bathrooms, laundries can become humid rooms where art is easily damaged. This didn’t deter designer Kate Walker, who filled her laundry with art in her stunning Morning Peninsula home.

(Photography: Armellle Habib | Styling: Julia Green / Australian House & Garden)

What kind of art can go in the bathroom?

Art is a subjective thing, as personal as it gets, so it seems fitting that you choose art that you really love when hanging it in your bathroom. Whether your bathroom wall art includes frames or a 3D artwork such as a sculpture, art is a great way to add some personality and flair to another room in your home.

Posters. Posters, either vintage or new, are a great way to add art to your walls at a fraction of the cost. A growing number of companies now reproduce art by famous artists, and Etsy is a great resource for old and new posters. When hanging posters in your bathroom, stick to a theme or go bold, and keep the paper and glass away from steam to avoid warping and discolouration.

Framed art. Wooden frames can warp and humidity can get under the glass, so check your bathroom has plenty of ventilation before hanging art in frames. If you’re going for a gallery wall, the pictures should complement each other in some way.

Sculptures. The term sculpture covers much ground, but when it comes to hanging them in the bathroom, go for wall decor and art that can handle the humidity. Stainless steel structures, foraged branches (or metal sculptural versions) and even decorative plates can be great additions in the bathroom. If you have good ventilation, try woven baskets or even a vintage hat and coat rack, or towel or luggage rack mounted on the wall can look fabulous as well as be practical.

How to do art in the bathroom?

In the master ensuite, marble boxes separate bath, shower and toilet. Laverna marble from Euro Natural Stone. Brodware ‘City Stik’ tapware in Aged Iron. Moda ‘Teresa’ freestanding bath from ACS Bathrooms. Bird sculpture and artwork by Bruce Armstrong.

Sculptures

Consider sculptures set against a wall or actually hanging on the wall in a bathroom, as well as more typical frames. This ensuite within a gracious historic terrace in Sydney’s eastern suburbs has received a contemporary update by William Smart of Smart Design Studio. Bird sculpture and artwork by Bruce Armstrong.

Cohesive colour palette

The powder room in this ‘lifted and shifted’ 1920s Queenslander features art by Vynka Hallam in warm pinks and browns which works cohesively with VJ boards painted in Resene ‘Toast’, blush pink floating vanity and floor tiles laid in a herringbone pattern.

Wall art

A wall art piece from Bowral store Arkke sits in the bathroom of this Berrima heritage home, helping to create a the perfect meeting of old and new. While maintaining respect for the Georgian cottage style, the owners seamlessly blended modern elements in the ensuite bathroom.

Go bold

This main bathroom is visible from the hallway so the owner of this colourful coastal home wanted it to have some personality. An Emma Gale artwork hangs in pride of place above a bathtub from Highgrove Bathrooms.

If you have the space for it, a powder room can be the perfect addition to any home both big and small! To help you create the perfect space for your home, we’ve pulled together 20 of our favourite powder room ideas to inspire you.

Powder rooms occupy kind of a funny space in the sphere of home design and renovation, especially when you think about renovating a bathroom.

You either have one as the result of a somewhat outmoded floorplan where the wash closet is separate from the main bathroom, or you need to create one within an existing layout to add convenience and functionality to a multi-storey or family home and take some of the load off your bathroom.

Whether you’re creating or renovating, we’ve pulled together some inspirational powder room ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

How do you make a powder room special?

No matter the purpose, powder rooms — though small — are a great opportunity to go a bit rogue with your styling. Maximalism is trending in these small spaces at the moment, so don’t be afraid to use wallpaper, vibrant colours and show a little personality!

20 powder room ideas to inspire

Photography: Pablo Veiga / Styling: Claire Delmar / Story: real living

In this renovated terrace home a White Emperador marble basin and shelf were custom-made to be the heroes of the powder room. White subway tiles laid vertically on te walls helps to accentuate a sense of space, while a ceramic pendant light adds task lighting.

Photography: Prue Ruscoe/ Design: Alwill Interiors / Story: Belle

This heritage home was given a sophisticated and contemporary update that oozes luxury. In the powder room a statement white onyx vanity instantly draws the eye and contrasts beautifully with the deep timber floors and timber-clad walls.

Photography: Prue Ruscoe / Story: Belle

This contemporary coastal home by Cameron Kimber uses colour in a restrained way. The exception to this, however, is the high-octane powder room where acid-yellow Chinoiserie wallpaper and Murano glass sconces make a strong design statement.

Photography: Mindi Cooke / Styling: Carlene Duffy / Story: Inside Out

The powder room in this ‘lifted and shifted’ 1920s Queenslander is very different to anywhere else in the home. VJ boards painted in Resene ‘Toast’ line the walls, and complement the blush pink floating vanity and floor tiles laid in a herringbone pattern.

Photography: Anson Smart / Design: Smac Studio / Styling: Claire Delmar / Story: Belle

The hidden powder room under the stairs in this stylish semi with old-world European charm is a statement of the home. Moody and encapsulating, it evokes the feeling of a cave of wonders, particularly when the Petra sconce by Christopher Boots shines its rose-quartz glow.

Photography: Prue Ruscoe / Design: Luigi Rosselli and Alwill Interiors / Story: Belle

In this revamped mid-century home the powder room was inspired by the idea of creating a “jewel within a jewel”, pairing an all-white palette with gleaming gold fixtures and de Gournay ‘Fishes’ wallpaper.

Photography: Derek Swalwell / Styling: Rebecca Simon / Story: real living

In the modern Mediterranean-inspired home of interior architect Georgia Ezra, the bathroom has been partitioned with a door, splitting it into a chic powder room space, and a wash room. In the powder room an ornate mirror complements the brass tapware and basin, while a timber vanity adds warmth to the tiled benchtop.

Photography: Pablo Veiga / Design: Alexandra Kidd Design / Styling: Megan Morton / Story: Belle

The powder room in this Georgian-style home opens to lush gardens and features a dramatic steel-framed doorto lead the way. The timber vanity is topped with a marble benchtop and inset sink, while Armani Casa ‘Refined Structures Versailles’ wallpaper from South Pacific Fabrics adds warmth.

Photography: Prue Ruscoe /Design: Benn + Penna / Styling: Claire Delmar / Story: Inside Out

Bespoke joinery was the hero in the area leading into the powder room, so a large mirror reflects the details of that timberwork in this multigenerational home in Balmain. The recessed sliding door is a great space saver, allowing the bathroom to disappear alongside the joinery when a streamlined look is needed.

Photography: Prue Ruscoe / Architecture: Luigi Rosselli / Design: Alwill Interiors / Story: Belle

The powder room in this monolithic ‘sandcastle’ on the shores of Sydney Harbour is wrapped in rich oak panelling with travertine for the vanity and floors. The feature timber panelling on the back wall draws the eye in, as it contrasts so beautifully to the bleached brick walls in the hallway.

Photography: Anson Smart / Design: Decus Interiors / Story: Belle

A private, hidden part of the coastal home, the powder room in this luxe coastal home boasts dramatic dark stone surfaces and the glamour of a vintage mirror. The twin wall sconces add a striking touch while the marble vanity is the crowning feature of the space.

Photography: Armelle Habib | Styling: Heather Nette King | Story: Inside Out

Copper metallic tapware add a sense of luxury to this powder room in a renovated semi-detached Edwardian home. The rose copper mirror adds a splash of colour in the mostly-white space.

Photography: Maree Homer / Styling: Janet James and Meryl Hare / Story: Australian House & Garden

In interior designer Meryl Hare’s harbourside home, a dark and moody colour palette was adopted for the powder room. The dark feature wall is paired with a dark basin and accessories, with a cleverly placed skylight adding ample natural light.

Photography: Armelle Habib / Styling: Julia Green / Story: Home Beautiful

Small powder room design ideas come from everywhere and this luxe look draws from the the Ice Green marble also used in the kitchen of this renovated cottage. Clean lines and modern tapware against the timber wall arch create subtle, yet shapely features.

Photography: Maree Homer / Design: Lawton Hurley and Lynda Kerry Design / Story: Australian House & Garden

This refined family home in Sydney features couture touches throughout to help take it to the next level. In the powder room Giverny Mandolin fabric from Unique Fabrics adds a romantic touch, especially when paired with the dark timber tones that run throughout the space.

Photography: Anson Smart / Design: Greg Natale / Story: Belle

The mosaic wall tiles in the powder room of this glamourous Sydney home make a bold impact, and are paired with a pared-back white vanity that features brass tapware. A chic framed mirror and mirrored wall-sconce provide the finishing touches.

Photography: Maree Homer / Styling: Ashley Pratt / Story: Australian House & Garden

A powder room is the perfect place to add some playful personality, and the bathroom in this family-friendly Sydney home has it in spades! Osborne & Little Folia Derwent wallpaper from Seneca Textiles is paired with jewel-like mosaic tiles from Di Lorenzo Tiles, creating a dramatic effect.

Photography: Simon Whitbread | Story: Home Beautiful

The addition of curves in a small powder room avoids sharp edges and that cramped feeling. This renovated 19th Century home uses modern powder room ideas to bring the space up-to-date with just the essentials – a curved, large format marble splashback, modern finger tiles and and an oversized powder room mirror to make the space appear larger.

Photography: Nat Spadavecchia / Styling: Fiona Gould / Story: Home Beautiful

Instead of the dark paint closing in, the genius of the powder room design in this striking family home is in the arched mirror, which borrows light from adjacent rooms and visually doubles the space.

Photography: Louise Roche / Styling: Kylie Jackes / Story: Home Beautiful

Small powder room dimensions needn’t stand in the way of style. White walls are given texture with a rendered finish in this rustic Byron Bay abode, while a modest marble basin sits beneath a wall-mounted soap dish and a single brass tap fitting – topped with a flourish in its fanned handle.

Whether you call them kit kat tiles, finger tiles, or mosaics, there’s no denying that sleek and slim tiles are trending. Despite their minute size, they have an incredible design presence in any bathroom, laundry or kitchen splashback.

Roughly the size of your finger or a chocolate-coated Kit Kat (hence the name), these delicate tiles make subtle statement whether used sparingly or en masse. Because of their simple nature, and the range of colours and tones available, they can complement all styles of interiors, from modern minimalist to heavenly heritage homes or dramatic new builds.

You will usually see kit kat tiles used to create a feature wall or splashback but there’s no reason why you can’t use them on every wall. You can even use them on the floor but consider the cleaning involved before you make such a bold move. While kit kat tiles are commonly laid vertically, they can also be laid horizontally and, below, you’ll see an inset bath lined with finger tiles which make it blend seamlessly into the space.

If you’re not convinced yet, let these kit kat tile-adorned spaces inspire you to create a mosaic masterpiece in your own home. Plus, see where you can source your own, below.

Looking for laundry renovation ideas? Well, if the kitchen is the heart of every home then the laundry is most certainly the engine room.

Whether it’s a minor upgrade or a total overhaul, the frequency at which your washing machine will spin as well as the sum of people it’ll produce clean clothes for should be the cornerstone for creating intelligent laundry designs filled with the right appliances.

Here’s are some top ideas to get your laundry room reno right.

How to design your own laundry?

What to choose first; the design or appliance? If you’re creating your laundry design from scratch, Daniela Santilli, Bathroom & Kitchen Merchandising Leader at Reece Bathrooms, recommends considering your laundry layout before falling in love with any fixtures or fittings. Designs can then usually be tweaked to accommodate choices, she says.

“If you’re only looking to complete a minor renovation, you’ll need to work with similar product types, such as upgrading an inset trough and washing machine,” she says. It’s also worthwhile thinking about ergonomics, for instance, whether your washing machine and dryer will sit side by side or on top of one another.

These days laundry designs are getting just as much thought as kitchens and bathrooms.

Top loader vs front loader

When it comes to choosing the best washing machine – and between a top- or front-loading one – there are a few things to consider. Top loaders have faster cycle times than front loaders, and often have larger capacities. Also, you can easily add garments to a top loader mid-cycle.

Front loaders are gentler on clothes, have higher spin speeds for more efficient drying and are quieter than top loaders. They can cost more initially, but they’re built to be more energy- and water-efficient, saving you in the long run.

TIP

To check the water and energy ratings of your machine or one you’re thinking of buying, go to waterrating.gov.au and Energyrating.gov.au

Do you need to waterproof your laundry?

“Washing machines leak, moisture builds up and floors can be completely ruined without correct waterproofing,” Daniela says. So, in short, yes, it pays to waterproof your laundry. Costs vary, depending on the size of the space, but you can expect to pay from $300 to $400 for a standard size room, she adds.

What is the best way to organise a laundry?

You can never have enough storage, and the laundry is no exception. When it comes to laundry organisation and storage solutions, Daniela says vertical options such as tallboy cupboards, either hung or free-standing, means items like irons, ironing boards, vacuum cleaners, hampers and baskets can be easily kept out of sight.

She also advises utilising all areas, especially if you’re redesigning an existing room. “Every awkward space can have its purpose; think about incorporating items such as towel rails, robe hooks, portable storage and unique shelving into those tricky gaps,” she says.

What is a European-style laundry?

Combining your laundry and bathroom or kitchen is a great space-saver and it also means “wet rooms” can be built together, saving space and money. This concept is what’s referred to as a European-style laundry.

“If you create a hybrid laundry and bathroom space, you’ll still have a great range of options both stylistically and functionally, while saving on the footprint of two separate rooms,” Daniela says. “Keeping things compact is key, so choose tapware that takes up the least amount of space.”

As a European style laundry is integrated in key areas of the home, you’ll need to consider ventilation, noise, installation and product selection carefully.

“You’ll need to look at the depth and width of troughs, ensuring you have enough space to fit certain styles and brands within the smaller space,” Daniela says. “You’ll often find these laundry types will include a combined dryer and washer.”

Laundry design ideas

There’s no denying the laundry can be a place of chaos, but interior designer Nina Maya Skrzynski says there is a fail-safe tip to combat the perils of dirty clothes. “Invest in a set of pocket doors,” she says. “These allow you to close the whole space off when you want the laundry out of sight.”

Nina says custom joinery is a great way to create a highly functional space that flows with the rest of your home. Her advice is to design your laundry and kitchen at the same time.

“By using the same company to create both areas you’ll get complementing joinery as well as saving time and money,” she says. A custom design, according to Nina, starts at roughly $17,000, and covers fixtures, appliances, trades, joinery and tiling, but this can vary depending on your finishes.

DIY laundry storage

If joinery isn’t an option there’s still plenty of ready-made cabinetry including tallboys and wall cabinets that will keep your laundry organised. Bunnings and Ikea are great places to start.

“If you’re looking for a set-up that’s ready to go, quicker to install and involves a lot less planning, a flat pack option is ideal,” says Daniela. However, keep in mind, this might not be the best option if you’re picky about design or have an awkward-shaped room.

Laundry design trends

Laundries are now an extension of kitchens and bathrooms so fixtures and fittings need to look the part. “We’re seeing tapware become a key feature piece, with the same range of colour options and styles available in the laundry space,” Daniela says, adding traditional era tapware is seeing a return in popularity alongside slim profile designs.

When it comes to tiling, large format styles are contemporary and economical, says Nina. “They give a designer finish, are cheaper than marble and work well for countertops and splashbacks,” she says. If space isn’t an issue, a built-in ironing board is also a handy addition. “In larger homes, I’m a big fan of laundry chutes from upper levels,” Nina adds.

LAUNDRY DOS AND DON’TS

DO

 • Opt for ample storage for items such as ironing board, vacuum cleaner, cleaning products and accessories

 • Include bench space for folding

 • If space permits, incorporate a drying area

 • Use vertical shelving, rails and hooks

 • Get plenty of quotes

 • Choose similar fixtures to your kitchen and bathroom for seamless style

DON’T

 • Buy appliances without doing your research into their functionality

 • Just go for what looks good; laundries are hard-working and need to be practical above anything else

 • Choose appliances before you’re happy with your design

 • Forget about the importance of proper waterproofing
