What size is a double mattress?

In Australia, double mattresses are generally 1385 x 1900mm.

Is a double mattress suitable for couples?

Given its size, a double mattress can be suitable for couples. However, if you’re looking for a sleeping solution that offers you and your partner more moving space, then a double-sized mattress may be a bit snug. If space is what you’re after (and you have the room for it), we’d recommend opting for a Queen or King size mattress instead.

However, if you plan to share your bed occasionally – say when family visit for the weekend – then a double-sized mattress is a good size that can accommodate the occasional sleepover.

Nonetheless, a double mattress works well for individual sleepers who tend to roll around while they sleep – or just love the luxurious option of having more space (who doesn’t?). However, it is still a good mattress size for couples who don’t mind sleeping closer together.

Looking for bunk bed ideas that aren’t just functional but fun? It’s hard to deny that bunk beds are an incredibly clever and utilitarian option for a bedroom, particularly for families with multiple children. But even if you’re working with a small room, bunk beds can be more than just incredibly functional, and lend themselves to plenty of creative ideas.

They are fantastic in a shared bedroom as they make great use of vertical space and create a fun sleeping zone for young ones, especially if they tend not to like sleeping alone at night. Bunk beds are also great for guest bedrooms, and there are plenty of ways to make them both appropriate (and even appealing!) for adults.

What age is appropriate for bunk beds?

Red Nose Australia recommends that children under the age of nine avoid sleeping on the top bunk as young children are more likely to fall when climbing up and down the ladder or fall from the top bunk while sleeping and are much more susceptible to serious injury.

To ensure your bunk beds are as safe as possible, Product Safety Australia recommend that connections and fasteners are checked regularly to ensure they are strong and secure.

To create a safe sleep environment, it’s also important to ensure that your bunk beds aren’t within reach of blind and curtain cords, lights and ceiling fans. They also recommend removing the ladder (if possible) from bunk beds when not in use to prevent small children from climbing unsupervised.

How to arrange a bedroom with bunk beds?

There are plenty of options when it comes to arranging bunk beds within a room. A lot depends on how much space you have to work with, and any specific restrictions within the room, including windows, ceiling heights and in-built wardrobes.

For small bedrooms, it’s best to position bunk beds against a wall so that there is enough room to still move around the space. For larger spaces, positioning a bunk bed in the middle of the room makes quite the feature and also means that everyone can access their bed from the side.

So whether you’re designing a kids’ room or a fun guest bedroom, take inspiration from these stylish bunk bed ideas that make the most of their respective rooms and space.

Is it cheaper to build bunk beds or buy them?

When weighing up the cost of building custom bunk beds versus buying bunk beds off the shelf, there are a few things to consider. Do you (or someone you know) have the skills and tools to build the bunk beds or would you need to hire someone? Hiring a carpenter or builder would cost a lot more than buying the materials and building yourself or buying ready-made bunk beds from a store.

It’s likely to be cheaper to buy bunk beds off the shelf or online and there are plenty of fabulous designs on the market that can be delivered straight to your door. You will need to assemble them yourself and it’s important this is done properly to avoid any accidents. If you’re not confident (or don’t have the time), hire someone to assemble them for you.

The post 9 reasons to switch to bamboo bed sheets this year appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Bamboo seems to be the go-to material for those looking to take a step closer to sustainable living with bamboo homewares, bed linen, clothing and even building materials become increasingly popular.

If you’re looking for more ways to be greener at home, switching to bamboo sheets is one of the most simple yet sustainable upgrades you can make. Bamboo also requires very little water to grow and produces around 35 per cent more oxygen than trees, making it one of the most renewable resources out there.

Not only is bamboo bedding better for the environment, it’s also better for you as it doesn’t require the use of pesticides or chemical fertilisers and its excellent hypoallergenic properties make it the perfect choice for those with sensitive skin.

Co-founder of Mulberry Threads, Kira Sterling, explains how switching to bamboo bedding can benefit both your health and the environment.

What makes bamboo sheets best?

1. They are eco-friendly

Because bamboo is biodegradable and decomposes like other organic plant matter, it doesn’t release harmful gases into the environment which makes it an eco-friendly alternative to other materials like cotton and polyester.

2. They have thermo-regulating properties

Bamboo sheets are thermoregulating, meaning they keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Micro-sized holes of the bamboo fibre allows the fabric to breathe and regulate body temperature. These holes assist with insulation by keeping warm air between the body and the blanket.

3. They are kind to sensitive skin

Bamboo is gentler than many man-made fibres and will not irritate the skin. The hypoallergenic properties of the bamboo is perfect for those with sensitivities, and is a natural solution for those predisposed to skin irritations and asthma.

4. ‘Clean’ sleeping

Antibacterial textiles are made from bamboo fibres that are naturally resistant to bacteria, repels dust mites, mould and mildew and allows for greater airflow. This also means you’ll find that your bedding can last longer between washes.

5. Bamboo repels bad odour

“Bamboo kun” is a naturally occurring substance that is odour-resistant and allows for greater air flow (which in turn helps to repel body odour).

6. They are highly durable

Bamboo is a very strong and resilient material. When bamboo sheets are cared for properly, they last just as long if not longer than other fabrics.

7. They are chemical free

Mulberry Threads’ bamboo sheets are dyed using environmentally-friendly dyes and processes. The sheets are tested at all stages through to final product as part of the brand’s Oeko-Tex certification, ensuring there is no use of harmful chemicals.

8. They feel great, too!

Bamboo is an incredibly soft fabric and is so unique in texture. Bamboo drapes beautifully, so as sheets they feel amazing on you as you sleep – just the right amount of weight to give you comfort without feeling heavy.

The ideal thread count for bamboo sheets isn’t a straightforward metric like with cotton and linen; instead, it’s crucial to consider various factors such as the type of bamboo (viscose or bamboo linen), weaving technique (sateen or twill), and certifications for quality and sustainability. But generally, a thread count in the range of 300 to 500 is considered sufficient for bamboo sheets.

What is the best thread count for bamboo sheets?

This new Emma Sleep bed is the ultimate space-saving pick https://www.homestolove.com.au/rooms/bedrooms/emma-sleep-new-release/ Mon, 20 May 2024 02:46:56 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=255316 We're serious about sleep (and storage space).

The post This new Emma Sleep bed is the ultimate space-saving pick appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
It’s no secret that we all value our precious sleep time. So much so that we have a laundry list of things to tick off when it comes to curating the perfect sanctuary for the perfect night’s sleep. From ensuring we have the best ergonomic mattress, the perfect memory foam pillow to rest our head on, to choosing the best bed frames that are sturdy (and stylish) – every ingredient to the perfect night’s sleep is crucial. That’s why we were deeply intrigued when the sleep experts at Emma Sleep announced their newest dreamy additions to their bed range.

The best bed frame for small spaces

Emma storage bed

Beds with storage have always been a game-changer for smaller spaces. Whether that’s the kids’ bedroom or guest room or you’re embracing apartment living, every bit of extra storage space counts. That’s why Emma Sleep has released the newest addition to its bed range: the new Emma Sleep storage bed.

The Emma storage bed features three metres of under-bed storage, perfect for storing extra bed linen, throws and cushions between seasons. Plus, say goodbye to bending over in awkward positions to reach under your bed – with an easy and sturdy gas-lift mechanism, the entire top lifts up effortlessly so you can see everything at a glance. Further, the gas-lift mechanism is robust and durable, so you know it’ll last for years to come.

Emma storage bed, from $948.80 (usually $1186), Emma Sleep

Besides its obvious handy storage feature, the Emma Sleep also moves away from the clunky storage bed designs of the past. Instead, the luxurious upholstery detail in the Emma storage bed makes it the perfect stylish yet functional piece that’ll fit seamlessly into any modern abode.

The Emma storage bed is currently 20 per cent off, starting at $984.80 (usually $1186) for a Double.

The best bed base for the minimalist

If you’re decorating within the minimalist style, you’ll want to choose a bed frame or bed base that is sturdy but not bulky. That’s where Emma Sleep comes in.

For the minimalist, extra concealed storage space is often not needed. So, this metal bed frame is the perfect pick. It elevates the bed above the ground and gives the illusion of a bigger space. It also ensures your mattress gets the much-needed airflow it needs without overwhelming your space.

The extra space underneath this bed base acts as a great no-frills storage option, too.

It’s a sleek, stylish, simple, sturdy pick. Thanks to its metal construction, it’s not only a great addition to a modern or industrial-style home, but it’s also built to last. The Emma metal bed uses durable metals that are ISO-certified to be safe and sturdy. Plus, if push comes to shove, and you really do need the extra storage space under the bed (hey, it happens), this bed frame is elevated enough for you to pop a few boxes underneath, too.

Available in Single, King Single, Double, Queen, and King sizes, to suit your needs, the Emma metal bed is currently 20 per cent off, starting at $399.20 (usually $499) for a Single.

So, whether you’re after concealed storage or just a simple, no-frills bed base that will elevate your mattress and the look of your bedroom, Emma Sleep is where you want to be browsing…see you at checkout.

When it comes to shopping for sheets, there’s one important factor to consider (before you dive into thread counts), and that’s deciphering which bed sheet material reigns supreme. And with an array of materials out there, finding one to suit your preferences can be a stressful journey – after all, having a good night’s sleep is of high importance for all.

For most of my life, I’ve stuck with cotton sheets, mainly out of habit or familiarity. However, I was determined to try other materials to ensure I wasn’t missing out on sleeping on the best of the best when it comes to bed sheets.

So, if you’ve been wondering which bed sheet material you should opt for – out of linen, cotton, or bamboo – I’ve done the hard work for you (so you don’t have to). Below are my honest thoughts after testing and trialling the most popular bed sheet materials on the market.

Organic cotton sheets

Organic cotton quilt cover with matching pillowcases in Matcha Stripes, from $159, Hommey

Cotton is the most popular fibre for bedding, but it’s also one of the most diverse, so it pays to know what you’re looking for.

When the coveted homewares brand Hommey released its first bedding collection featuring organic cotton, I knew I had to try it for myself. As I’m pretty familiar with cotton sheets, I was interested to see if there was a difference in feel, texture, and experience with organic cotton.

I trialled the organic cotton quilt cover (with matching pillowcases) in Matcha Stripes, which starts at $159 for just the duvet cover.

After putting these sheets in the trusty washing machine for the first wash before use (a must), I was ready to, well, go to sleep. After its first wash, already, the organic cotton material felt softer than when I initially took it out of the box. The sheets were also a bit lighter than I expected, which is nice if you like lightweight bedding. However, even though it is lightweight, it is still a cosy pick. So much so that I wouldn’t particularly recommend organic cotton for those who run hot while they sleep.

The organic quilt covers and pillowcases from Hommey feature a 240 thread count—which, in my opinion, is the perfect amount for this particular fibre. Any higher would make it too heavy and uncomfortable for everyday use. They’re also woven in a sateen weave for added softness and breathability. The great thing about organic cotton is that the options for design, patterns and colour are a lot bigger and varied compared to other fibres such as silk or bamboo. So, if you love bold patterns or colours – cotton is worth considering. Plus, compared with standard cotton, organic cotton is a more renewable source, too.

Overall verdict on organic cotton sheets

Organic cotton sheets aren’t particularly cool or warm, making them a great all-season pick. They will keep you warm in winter but still feel lightweight enough to sleep in during summer. However, as mentioned earlier, I would not recommend organic cotton sheets for those who run hot while they sleep, as they lack cooling properties that you may be able to find in an alternative material. Nonetheless, I loved the bold design of the Matcha Stripes pattern (which makes this sheet set stand out from the rest) and its overall cosy feel.

Linen sheets

Morgan & Finch Milano luxury linen sheet set in Khaki, from $299.95, Bed Bath N’ Table.

Next up, linen bed sheets.

I opted to try out the Milano French flax linen sheet set from Morgan & Finch. As expected, linen sheets were the most lightweight option out of the three. French flax linen is known for its highly breathable composition that can absorb up to 20 per cent of its weight in moisture before feeling damp. Although I don’t run hot when I sleep, the breathable and cooling nature of this linen set is still great, and I can see why it is such a popular option for summer (and for those who run hot when they sleep).

Further, as I trialled these linen sheets during winter, it did mean I was putting its heat retention properties to the real test. And to my surprise, although linen is known as a popular summer bedding choice, it held up well during chillier nights too. However, I would still recommend adding a cosy throw overtop or coupling a linen quilt cover with a thicker quilt for winter to ensure you’re super cosy.

On the other hand, the feel of linen sheets is quite unique, and its organic properties are more pronounced to the touch. Some would describe it as slightly scratchier than its cotton or bamboo counterparts, and I would agree. However, linen sheets are strong, durable, and will become softer with every wash. Think of it as similar to ‘breaking into’ your new leather boots—it takes time, but it’s worth the investment.

The Milano linen sheets are made from pure linen, which is made from flax plants grown in regions of France. It has a natural and organic look and feel, making it a great option for country or rustic-styled homes.

Overall verdict on linen sheets

I had high hopes when it came to trialling linen sheets, and I was not disappointed. The Milano linen sheets were everything I had expected from the fibre – a natural, organic, and lightweight bedding option. If you’re expecting your linen sheets to feel smooth like a baby’s bottom, then linen sheets are not for you. But, if you’re after an investment piece that will last the test of time, get softer with every wash, and add a rustic charm into your bedroom, linen sheets is your best choice.

Bamboo sheets

Ecosa bamboo sheet set in Glacial Green, from $126 (usually $180), Ecosa

Last but not least, bamboo bedding.

Bamboo bedding is a newer fibre to the bed linen industry, only entering the commercial market in the early 2000s. Bamboo sheets are known to have a finish very similar to silk sheets, so I was excited to slip into this bamboo sheet set from Ecosa, stat.

Right off the bat, this bamboo sheet set was a lot heavier than I anticipated. And for someone who absolutely despises changing bed sheets every week (why is it a workout and a half?), I was not looking forward to the chore of changing my sheets – especially when they felt heavier than usual. Nonetheless, I soldiered on and gave these bamboo sheets a good go, and boy, am I glad I did.

The silky-smooth texture of the bamboo sheets against the skin was unmatched – it was nothing I had ever experienced from a sheet set before. And we have the dreamy sateen weave and rounded bamboo fibres to thank for that. Upon further investigation, I learnt that these bamboo sheets have a 400 thread count (which explains the denser feel) but are still breathable and moisture-wicking.

I loved the fact that bamboo offers the same soft feel as silk without making you feel like you might slide right off your bed (dramatic, but true). It’s also a more affordable fibre than silk.

Overall verdict on bamboo sheets

After trying bamboo sheets firsthand, I finally understand the hype. They’re soft, cool, and hypoallergenic. And despite my first impression of these bamboo sheets possibly being too heavy for everyday use, I was surprised that they didn’t feel too heavy when you actually slept in them. Plus, its slight cooling effect on the skin is a luxurious touch I now cannot give up.

It’s safe to say, I’m now a bamboo sheets convert.

Final thoughts

After trialling organic cotton, French linen, and bamboo sheets, it’s hard to choose a favourite. Each sheet material has its own unique qualities, so it’s important to take your own personal preferences into consideration when choosing a material for your new sheets. If you’re a hot sleeper, I’d recommend linen or bamboo sheets, and the latter if you love the feeling of silk. If you love that cosy feel every night, organic cotton is your best bet.

What is the best wood for a bed frame?

When choosing the best wood for your bed frame, there are a few key specs to consider, such as the weight of your mattress and whether you’ll be sharing your bed with a partner. If your mattress is on the heavier side, it’s crucial to opt for a sturdy wooden bed frame. Hardwoods like oak, walnut, or mahogany are great options for this. Further, if you’ll be sharing a bed, opting for a sturdier base is a must. If you have a lighter mattress, woods like pine is an excellent option, too.

There’s no fabric quite as lavish and loved as silk, especially when it comes to the bedroom (maybe with the exception of linen). Adding a special level of sophistication that no other type of bedding can offer, silk sheets are the ultimate symbol of luxury. But, are they really worth the splurge? To put it simply, yes. An expensive investment, no doubt, but one you’ll reap a myriad of rewards from.

Silk is the softest of all fibres and has natural skin-soothing and allergy-fighting properties for your best sleep yet. Doubting its lightness will keep you warm? The luxurious fabric is considered a better insulator than Egyptian cotton. There are two main types available: tussah silk and cultivated mulberry silk, which is by far the highest quality. The latter produces smooth, fine-textured bed linen that’s extremely durable, whilst bedding made with tussah silk has a shorter shelf life and a coarser texture.

When buying silk bedding, you should factor in momme (mm) weight, the traditional silk measurement that indicates quality. As a guide, the higher the momme weight, the better the quality with most good-quality bedding ranging between 19-25 momme. Splurging on your sleep space is well worth it, so you’ll be doing yourself a favour for many years to come. Ahead, the most stylish silk sheets money can buy to help you achieve the bedroom of your dreams.

Turn even the smallest space into a spare bedroom with these stylish single sofa beds https://www.homestolove.com.au/rooms/bedrooms/single-sofa-bed-australia/ Tue, 14 May 2024 07:43:58 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=254732 With just a single sofa bed, you can transform any room.

The post Turn even the smallest space into a spare bedroom with these stylish single sofa beds appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Whether you live in a compact city apartment or a bustling family home in the suburbs, the desire to maximise the versatility of each room in your home is a universally understood language. And with the addition of even just a single sofa bed, along with these other simple tips, you’ll be guest ready in no time.

While it may seem obvious to some, designing our homes to fit our needs is not always the beaten path, but there really is no rule-book for how you should utilise each room. Even if “3 bedroom, 2 bath” is what it says on the tin, you should feel empowered to think of it as more of a suggestion than a rule.

When you consider work-from-home requirements, children’s play rooms, home gyms and even walk-in-wardrobes (like this three-bedroom home retrofitted into a one-bedroom with two walk-in wardrobes), personalising your home can bring so much more enjoyment to the space in which you spend the majority of your time.

To save you sacrificing function in the event of overnight guests (expected or otherwise), there are a few tricks you can employ. Here are our favourite ways to turn even the smallest spaces into a spare bedroom.

Design for multi-function

Let’s say you’ve reclaimed one of the three bedrooms for your home office, with all the essentials: an imposing desktop monitor, desks, drawers and chair staking their claim on the majority of the space. Designing this for multi-function can be as simple as: desk drawers that can double as a bedside stand; ergonomic chairs that fit flush under the desk and out of the way; and a large desktop monitor that can be seen from any corner of the room, perfect to double as a screen for movie night.

Plus, neutral coastal-chic colour schemes need not be disrupted by harsh black computer hardware, you’re spoilt for choice with these aesthetic and stylish home office essentials.

Make use of room dividers and storage

The second of your three bedrooms has, over time, found itself becoming a walk-in wardrobe of sorts – distinguishable by the dreaded floor-drobe. We’ve all been there, using the spare room as an additional storage space for winter coats and the like, when suddenly, one day, it’s become your personal dressing room and no one, not even the jacket covered chair, is quite sure how.

When reclaiming a misbehaving spare room for your impending guests, room dividers and plenty of storage solutions can be all you need. A room divider can help partition your room and keep the visual clutter separated from any sleeping space. And ensuring you have the right amount of storage and hanging spaces available for the quantity of clothing you intend to store in here, along with any clothing your guest will bring with them, will help keep the room ready for what you need it for: a restful night’s sleep.

Opt for multi-use furniture

A sofa bed is the ultimate versatile furniture piece that can be called on in a time of need, and really is the best investment in your multi-use spaces you can make. And, when a compact room is what you’re working with, a single sofa bed or an armchair sofa bed will take it from home-office or walk-in wardrobe to a welcoming haven for guests at the drop of a hat.

Here are the best single sofa beds on the market. Or, if you have a bit more room to play with, you might be in the market for a full size sofa bed.

Can you sleep on a sofa bed permanently?

While they’re a great versatile option to transform limited spaces, and can be ultra-comfortable for your guests temporarily, it’s not recommended to permanently sleep on a sofa bed. Your dedicated mattress will have better support and will be more comfortable in the long run. A sofa bed is only meant to offer temporary solution.

Can a single sofa bed fit two adults?

A typical single bed is 92cm wide, so it’d be tight! If you’re looking for a sofa bed fit for a couple, you’d be better off looking into the full size sofa beds over a single. However, in a pinch, or if just for two small children, you might be able to get away with the single sofa bed.

Similar to the array of mattress options available – memory foam, pocket spring, or a hybrid of both – mattresses also come in various sizes to suit your bedroom, needs and preferences.

Although we love the compact size (and affordability) of a single mattress, upgrading to something bigger, like the likes of a queen mattress, is an upgrade we can get behind.

If your bedroom has the space for it, opting for a queen bed size not only allows you to sleep comfortably all night long, but if you have guests over, a queen mattress can fit two comfortably too.

It’s a versatile mattress size to invest in, and if you’re ready to discover the wonders of a queen mattress, you’re in luck. Below, we’ve rounded up the best queen mattresses that will ensure sound and restful sleep.

]]>
When it comes to creating the perfect sanctuary-like bedroom, opting for a bed frame that suits your style and space is key. As the central feature of the room, selecting the right design won’t only set assist you in having a great night’s sleep but it will also set the tone of your space.

Below, we explore some ideas that will assist you in better selecting the perfect bed frame for your home and some great options currently on the market.

How important is buying the right bed frame for your mattress?

The bed frame that you buy will ultimately have an effect on the longevity of your mattress and your overall comfort while sleeping. “A design that ensures breathability and airflow is key for a long lasting and functioning mattress,” says Koala Product Designer, Adam Harrigan.

From a technical perspective, it’s obviously crucial that the frame provides a suitable support platform for your mattress. “This ensures that the mattress does not sink in and can breathe,” says Adam.

A foam mattress for example suits a very rigid platform that can offer maximum breathability and structural stability.

What should you look for when buying a bed frame?

Adam Harrigan suggests considering each of the following elements:

 • Functionality: Your bed frame needs to be sturdy and supportive. Bed frames that move around and make noise aren’t ideal.
 • Size and height: It might seem obvious, but making sure you know your bedroom’s measurements and checking the bed frame size is crucial when deciding on which bed you can fit. Beyond bed size, height plays an important role. Lower bed frames tend to feel more inviting and open, whereas higher and bigger bed frames are more of a standout piece.
 • Materials used: Depending on your style and your space, one of the three materials that dominate the market will best suit you: timber, upholstery or metal. Check what your frame is specifically made from and try to opt for higher grade materials.
 • Storage space: Whether it’s under the bed or behind the bed head, storage space is a great addition to have, especially for those with smaller bedrooms.
 • Longevity: If possible, it’s worth investing in a design that will stand the test of time. Manufacturers of high-quality furniture make sure that the inner structure up to the fabrics can take heavy pressure for a longer time, therefore bringing more comfort to you.

Your bedroom should be your haven, a place where you can rest your head on soft cushions and find warmth and comfort under layers of cosy woollen blankets on a cold winter’s evening.

As we transition from summer to winter, it’s time to cosy up your bedroom with extra layers, texture and comforting decor that celebrates the season.

From snug sheets to autumnal foliage, these decorating ideas will inspire you to turn your bedroom into a warm and inviting sanctuary where tea in bed, weekend sleep-ins and cosy nights in can be enjoyed in style.

Warm winter bedding

A place to pop your tea down, a puppy dog to cuddle and plump euro cushions to prop yourself up to read a book or the paper – this bedroom ticks all the boxes in terms of comfort and style with a quilted bedspread and basket of warm winter throws nearby.

Muted tones and texture

Let the season inspire your decor. Here, dried autumnal foliage, botanical illustrations and bedlinen in soft tones that you would would commonly see on an early winter morning or late afternoon, make this bedroom feel calm and connected.

Rug up

No one wants to step out of a warm bed onto a cold floor first thing in the morning. If you have floorboards in your bedroom, a rug beside or at the end of the bed will help to cosy up the space in winter.

Just add foliage

With layers of crumpled linen in lilac tones and rich purple foliage by the bed, this dreamy bedroom looks like an ideal spot for sipping tea in bed on a winter’s morning .

Keep the heat in

Window coverings don’t just keep light and heat out, they also help to keep the heat in… which is what we want in winter. With superior insulation properties and proven to reduce heating costs, Luxaflex® Duette® Shades (pictured) are king when it comes to insulation. The unique honeycomb structure traps air to keep your home cool in summer and warm in winter.

Warm earthy tones

Earthy, terracotta-coloured bedlinen and colourful artworks inject this bedroom inside an artist’s weatherboard farmhouse in the Macedon Ranges with warmth and personality.

Texture abounds

Who said an all-white bedroom can’t feel warm and cosy? A wall hanging in from Barefoot Gypsy and a rust throw from Pampa add an earthy, organic warmth to this cloud-like bedroom.

Whimsical wallpaper

Wallpaper can work wonders when it comes to transforming your bedroom into a warm and whimsical escape. Here, a forest landscape in soft grey tones ties in perfectly with the bedlinen and furnishings, creating a space made for rest and relaxation.

In summer we want the lightest most breathable bedding we can find and in winter it’s all about the snug-factor. Finding sheets that do both can be tricky, unless you know what you’re looking for!

While flannelette sheets are recommended for warmth in winter, not every loves the velvety texture and that brushed cotton gives off. Many people prefer to stick with linen or cotton sheets throughout the cooler months and layer with a warm winter quilt and extra blanket. Whatever your fabric preference is, staying warm while you sleep in winter is easy with our expert advice to help you cosy up your bedroom and find the perfect sheets to keep you snug (without feeling suffocated).

Is linen, cotton or flannelette warmest for winter?

Sleeping in breathable, premium quality natural fibres all year round is never a bad idea. Linen is cooler in summer and warmer in winter than many cotton percale fibres, and is soft and light. Flannelette also has a soft and cosy feel for winter sleeping. Cotton, flannelette and linen are all suitable for winter; though, trust your skin to choose the fabric you love.

What thread count is best?

Thread count is merely a measure of sheet weight. The higher the thread count, the heavier the construction of the sheet. For this reason, high thread count sheeting tends to be warmer. The common misconception about thread count is that it’s a mark of quality, which is incorrect.

What sheets are best for hot sleepers in winter?

100% cotton or 100% linen are both breathable natural fibres which will allow your body to naturally regulate its temperature – keeping you cooler in summer, and warmer in wintry months.

As we head into the cooler months, now is the perfect time to overhaul your bedroom and treat yourself to a fresh set of flannelette sheets (the best thing about winter, in my opinion).

Cotton and pure linen sheets are ideal for summer. Light and crisp, they keep you cool and regulate your body temperature. While these materials are still suitable all year round…if you’ve ever had the pleasure of sliding into the warm and fuzzy layers of a flannelette sheet set, you’ll know there is nothing more comforting on a wintery night. “While cotton is cool and smooth, flannelette is a cold-weather favourite for the warm and cosy feel which many sleepers prefer in the winter months,” says Hayley Worley, creative director and co-founder of The Sheet Society.

Flannelette sheets are made of 100 per cent cotton but their extra cosy texture is created when the cotton fabric is brushed on both sides with a fine metal brush to raise the fine fibres from the fabric to deliver a ridiculously soft (and cosy) feel. In short, flannelette sheets are the equivalent of a warm teddy bear hug.

So, with style, fabric and affordability in mind, we’ve rounded up the best flannelette bed linen sheet sets on the market that’ll keep you as snug as a bug all winter long.

2024’s top flannelette sheets

Are flannelette sheets warmer than cotton or linen sheets?

Flannelette sheets feel soft and fluffy because the cotton is brushed. This also means they retain more heat than your everyday cotton or linen sheets because the fibres are brushed to cross over each other and trap the warm air in. So yes, flannelette sheets will keep you warmer and their velvety softness provides unrivaled comfort on a cold winter’s night.

How to wash and care for flannelette sheets

“The more you wash good flannelette sheets, the softer they get,” says Hayley Worley, creative director and co-founder of Sheet Society. To properly care for your flannelette sheets and ensure they stay soft and fluffy, Hayley recommends washing them in cold or cool water with a small amount of detergent (don’t over do it), on a gentle setting. Avoid tumble drying and air dry (prefferably not in full sun). “Give your sheets a good shake after washing to soften any crinkles, then let them line dry in the shade,” advises Hayley. Ensure your sheets are completely dry before you put them on the bed or store them away.

Hommey launched in 2021 and after just three months had sold more than 1000 units of its cool, high-quality cushions and first-release homewares. Three years on, it has sold more than 50,000 units, is scaling into the United States and beyond, and has opened a store in Melbourne’s South Yarra.

Since its conception, Hommey has increased its range with bone-shaped cushions and stylish boucle beds for pups in colours like Cadbury’s Caramilk, Milkshake and Sicilian Olive. It has fluffy throw blankets in reversible hues, terry-toweling robes, funky striped towels, and vegan slides that bridge the gap between slippers and Birkenstocks.

“We do not want to cater to every design aesthetic, we want to bridge the gap between too serious and playful,” says Justin Kestelman, Hommey founder. (Photo: Hommey)

And now it’s infiltrating the bedroom. Hommey’s latest release is their softest yet and includes a range of bedding in 12 curated colours, including their now iconic stripes. Made from 100% cotton sateen, which has been stonewashed for extra softness, it comes with a 200 thread count and OEKO-TEX ® STANDARD 100 certification (meaning it’s better for you and the environment).

“Our new bedding collection is designed to provide cloud-like comfort and a playful, exciting touch to your bedroom,” says Justin. Available in everything from cot size to Super King, it’s designed to mix and match and it’s a whole lot of fun.

Justin’s plan for Hommey is for it to become a destination for home decor and the place that people turn to when they’re moving house, looking for birthday/engagment/wedding presents, or just for something to shake up their space. And with this latest collection ticking off the final room in the home, we think it may just be exactly that.

The best wool, microfibre and bamboo winter quilts for a snug night’s sleep https://www.homestolove.com.au/shopping/best-winter-quilts-australia-23596/ Thu, 28 Mar 2024 01:18:16 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/best-winter-quilts-australia-23596 Don't let the nip of winter keep you from catching your Zs.

The post The best wool, microfibre and bamboo winter quilts for a snug night’s sleep appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Cultivating a cosy and comfortable sleeping space is a key aspect of home design to master at any point of the year, but especially during the wintry months. The days are shorter, the nights are cooler, and you might need some extra bed linen love to stay snug.

Although flannelette sheets and an extra throw on the bed can help to keep the chills at bay, a good quality winter quilt is more often than not all you’ll need – or is at least an excellent starting point.

Materials like wool, bamboo, microfibre, feather and down are ideal fibres for keeping toasty – each with benefits like temperature regulation, and insulation, as well as being antibacterial and hypoallergenic…

Adding character and warmth to your bedroom is as simple as choosing a colourful cover for your quilt.

(Photography: Nikole Ramsay/ Styling: Emma O’Meara/ Story: Inside Out)

Which quilt is best for winter?

Wool quilts

For sleepers who are prone to feeling particularly chilly in the wee hours of the night, wool is almost unrivalled when it comes to retaining body heat all slumber long. Moisture-wicking, renewable, and eco-friendly, a wool quilt is a staple you’ll have for years to come.

Bamboo quilts

As a naturally anti-microbial and antibacterial fibre that is resistant to dust mites and mould, bamboo is an excellent choice of bedding for those with asthma and allergies. With organic fibres that promote temperature regulation, you can sleep soundly throughout the night without overheating. Bamboo also makes a great natural alternative to wool, feather, and down doonas.

Microfibre quilts

Ideal for people with asthma and allergies, microfibre quilts are made from a synthetic material that retains heat well and is usually on the more affordable side of things. Versatile in weight and loft, microfibre quilts are great for all seasons – with a thick one being well suited to winter.

Feather and down quilts

Duck or goose down and feather quilts are durable and incredibly warm with the combination of the two different types of plumage within one doona. Although luxe with their warming and insulation capabilities, they’re not well suited to people with asthma and allergies. If microfibre, bamboo, or wool doesn’t cut it and you are looking to buy one of these quilts, you should make sure it has been ethically sourced.

The best kids’ mattresses you can buy in Australia https://www.homestolove.com.au/rooms/bedrooms/best-kids-mattress-australia-24249/ Fri, 08 Mar 2024 04:48:05 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/best-kids-mattress-australia-24249 How to choose the best mattress for your child, and signs they may need an upgrade.

The post The best kids’ mattresses you can buy in Australia appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
From gadgets that promise to lull your child to sleep in seconds, to blackout blinds and special sleeping bags, parents of babies and young children are sold all sorts of things that claim to promote sleep but, before you make any impulse purchases, it’s important to start with the right foundations to set your little one (and yourself) up for sleep success. A quality mattress designed with little growing bodies in mind is the first place to start when setting up a sleep sanctuary for your child.

As your bub transitions from a bassinet to a cot and finally a ‘big’ bed, you’ll need to upgrade your mattress each time. And it’s not just the size that will change. The older and bigger your child gets, the more support is required which means, the small foam mattress they first slept on from birth to say, six months old, won’t suffice when they’re ready for a cot or single bed.

Similar to picking out your own mattress, there are specific things you should look out for when choosing a mattress for your child, such as the size, the firmness, the materials it’s made from and the warranty offered. Below, we’ve found the best kids’ mattresses to shop as well as what to look out for when choosing the right one.

2024’s top kids’ mattresses

 1. Eco Kids mattress, $699, Eco Kids (here’s why)
 2. Emma Comfort II single mattress, $576 (usually $720), Emma Sleep (here’s why)
 3. Origin Hybrid Pro mattress (single), $949 (usually $1729), Origin Mattress (here’s why)

What should I look out for when buying a kids’ mattress?

Firmness level: Firm or soft?

According to Gary Ginsberg, sleep expert and founder of Wowbeds, in most cases, your little ones are light enough that a firmer mattress will suit their needs instead of one that’s too soft. Opt for a medium or medium-firm mattress that will support their spinal alignment as they grow.

Size: Single vs King single

When it comes to choosing the right size, although every child is different, there are some mattress sizes that are standard for certain ages – such as a single typically being suitable for toddlers and young children aged between three to eight years old. If your bedtime routine involves you lying next your child to read to them or pat them to sleep, then opt for a king single to ensure you have enough room to do so. A king single should last you a little longer, too, offering a bit more room for growing bodies

Construction: Eco, non-toxic mattresses

While there is a wide selection of different designs, sizes and materials available, finding a mattress that is free of toxic chemicals and heavy metals isn’t always front of mind (or easy). Opt for eco-friendly designs made with bamboo fabric, which is naturally antibacterial, antifungal and hypoallergenic, that will also keep bodies warm in winter and cool in summer.

When should you replace your kids’ mattress?

Unless there are obvious signs of wear-and-tear (sagging, stains, etc.), or your child has outgrown their cot or single bed, it can be hard to know when to replace a mattress. If your child’s mattress has seen better days – and those days were anywhere from seven to ten years ago – it might be time for an upgrade.

Transitioning from cot to bed

When it comes to transitioning a toddler from cot to bed, Gary Ginsberg recommends getting them involved with the process – from choosing out their own special bed linen to helping put the bed together; “this gets the child excited about their new ‘big bed'”, says Gary. “Sometimes it helps to put the bed in the same position as their cot was too in order to add more familiarity, and introducing a ‘big bed’ night time routine,” he adds.

Which type of mattress protector is best?

There are three main types of mattress protectors – encasement, elastic strap and fitted. An encasement mattress protector zips around your mattress and covers it completely (including the bottom of your mattress), an elastic strap mattress protector only covers the top of your mattress and is attached to your mattress at each corner with elastic straps, and lastly a fitted mattress protector is similar to that of a fitted sheet, where the edges of your mattress are protected too.

Finding the best type of mattress protector comes down to your personal preference. Encasement mattress protectors cover the entirety of your mattress, however, when it comes to changing your mattress protector it may require a bit more effort when compared to a simple elastic strap mattress protector, for example. Nonetheless, all types of mattress protectors are a great investment to make to keep your mattress in tip-top shape for years to come.

What is the highest quality linen?

It’s generally acknowledged that Belgian linen is of the finest quality, as is Italian linen and Belgian or French flax linen. Flax is grown in France or Belgium, which means the linen can then be sold as Belgian flax linen, no matter where it gets woven and finished.

“French Linen is the best linen you can buy,” says Carlotta from Carlotta + Gee.

“This is because of the temperature in the air which allows the flax plant to grow at its peak. It is also grown in India however due to the heat, often the flax snaps and doesn’t get to grow as long which means it isn’t as strong. Look out for the GSM which is how linen is measured.”

European-produced linen is often a safe bet, with some insisting the best weaving mills are found in Italy.

What are trending colour combinations for linen sheets?

With so many colourways available, it can be hard to choose just one. Mixing and matching different linens is a great way to create a unique look for your space.

“There are always your traditional colours such as optic white, natural and stone. We are finding the natural stripes, marine stripes or olive stripes are popular to add something fresh to people’s bedrooms. We have found, especially with Carlotta + Gee, that Olive and Tobacco have been favourites. They add such a buzz to your room. You can’t go wrong with light pink mixing with a dark grey – even the fellas like this,” expressed Carlotta.

What GSM should linen sheets be?

Consumers tend to look at thread count as the biggest indicator of quality, but this is not always the case. In fact, the thickness of linen fibres means that linen sheets are often 80 – 150 thread count, which would be seen as low for a cotton sheet.

Synthetic materials such as rayon or polyester can often feel softer at first touch – and the manufacturers will use that as a selling point – but over time the quality will decrease, whereas good flax linen will improve with age; it will soften and simultaneously become stronger the more it is washed.

Linen is typically measured in GSM, which stands for “grams per square meter” and is a measure of the density or weight of a fabric. The best linen sheets will range from 150 to 200 GSM. Linen is valued for its natural texture and breathability, and higher GSM linen sheets are often associated with more luxurious and durable options.

What is so great about linen bedding?

The first thing to look for is natural, 100 percent linen. Linen, being a natural material, lets your skin breathe, which helps to regulate your body temperature, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter. It’s also highly absorbent, lint-free and nonallergenic.

“Linen bedding is the most natural plant you can sleep in. Being ethical and sustainable is extremely important to us. So, after researching the benefits of the flax plant which is grown in France, we knew this was the one. There isn’t one part of the plant which is wasted – the plant is grown for the bedding; the seeds are eaten and the oil off the plant is used to vanish furniture,” says Carlotta.

“Linen also becomes softer with age as it is stone-washed, which means it will last a long time. Other advantages include health benefits with the material stimulating the blood flow. And of course, the aesthetic of a room complete with linen bedding is amazing,” she adds.

Sleep may be free, but a good night’s rest is the best investment in yourself that you’ll ever make. The beauty, health and mind benefits are endless. An essential part of getting enough Zzzs? A quality mattress.

All the 10,000-count Egyptian cotton sheets, fancy pillows and pretty doonas in the world won’t make up for a poor-quality mattress that has you tossing and turning all night long. The solution? However, although an adjustable bed is a great investment for quality sleep – ultimately, it is down to your own needs and budget when purchasing a new bed base. Some may find that their quality of sleep is fine with a premium mattress and bed base that isn’t adjustable, too.

Some people consider themselves foodies while others are interior-obsessed, but if there’s one passion we collectively share, it’s a mutual love of sleep. Honestly, sometimes it feels like we’re just chasing those Zs from the moment we wake up ’til bedtime rolls around once again. And if there’s one thing that makes diving into bed even dreamier, it’s a good set of cotton sheets.

Fostering a good night’s sleep is essential, and although linen sheets have become a fast favourite in recent years (and for very good reason, mind you), nothing can quite compare to the buttery softness of cotton: it’s natural, it’s breathable, it’s hypoallergenic, it’s all-season-friendly, it’s more affordable and, perhaps most importantly, it’s hard-wearing.

We’re of the firm belief that every home should have multiple sets of sheets in multiple fabrics to cover every base, but if your cotton repertoire is lacking or needs replacing, look no further. Ready to roll around in some brand-new bedding? Shop our 5 top picks below.

What thread count is good for cotton sheets?

As the term would imply, ‘thread count’ refers to the number of threads on a piece of cotton fabric. It’s generally accepted that higher = better, but of course, there’s a catch. There is currently no industry standard, meaning the size of the area measured varies, as does the metric (centimetres or inches), so it pays to do a bit of investigating rather than just purchasing at face value. However, as a rule of thumb, a thread count of between 200 and 400 is a fairly reliable bracket.

Which type of cotton bed sheet is best?

Although you may think ‘cotton sheet’ implies just one type of fabric, there are a few variants. Egyptian cotton sheets are high quality, luxe, and durable – and come with a price tag to match – sateen sheets are made from pre-treated cotton which is soft but tends to pill more than Egyptian cotton, and percale is a tightly woven fabric that has a crisp feel.

When it comes to the world of interiors, there can be so many arbitrary rules to wrap your head around. The way you position a rug, the colours you pair together, even the way you place the furniture in a room. But if there is one thing you can always count on, it’s that black will always be in vogue. From sheets to bedheads, wardrobes, rugs, curtains, armchairs, artworks, lamps and cushions, there are a lot of elements that go into designing a bedroom. While bedside tables may be one of the more functional pieces, it’s important to find a style that works cohesively with your overall scheme. That’s where black bedside tables become a stylist’s best tool.

Whether round, tall, with drawers, a minimal look or glitzy brass hardware, black bedside tables can work with a wide variety of interior styles. Whether you’re a minimalist, maximalist, modernist, or into something more specific like Scandi (or even Japandi) style, black bedside tables will always work.

And don’t fool yourself: opting for a black bedside table is by no means limiting your sense of style. Below, we’ve found seven of the best — and most beautiful — black bedside tables on the market that prove just how wide-ranging the options out there are.

Should bedside tables match the bed?

Bedrooms are one of the most intimate spaces within our home, so when it comes to questions that begin with ‘should’, it’s important to remember that whatever you like goes. In design, cohesion in a space is a big element of style, so ideally, a bed and bedside tables would match.

While some big brands offer bedroom suites — as in you can buy a bedframe, bedside table, dresser, and tallboy all in one style — it may be convenient but risks the space looking too matchy-matchy and lacking a bit of soul.

Instead, you should try to find a bedside table and bed that complement one another. That could simply mean they’re the same colour, or share a similar shape or design feature.

Is it bad Feng Shui to have one bedside table?

According to the principles of Feng Shui, balance and harmony are essential to ensuring a positive energy flow in a space, which often means styling furniture and home decor in even numbers. While having only one bedside table is not necessarily considered bad Feng Shui, it may disrupt the balance of a space.

Traditionally in Feng Shui, having two bedside tables and matching items on either side of the bed promotes balance and equality for both partners in the relationship. If you are the only one sleeping in the bed, you may not require this.

If space or budget constraints mean you can only have one bedside table, you could mitigate any potential imbalance by placing something functional on the other side of the bed (a stool or bookshelf, perhaps), or focusing instead on other aspects of Feng Shui within the room.

Is it good to have a mattress topper?

If your existing mattress is still in a good condition, but you’d like to adjust the firmness level to something a bit squishier or softer, adding a plush mattress topper is a great affordable solution. A mattress topper can offer a more comfortable night’s sleep, with some brands offering temperature-regulating technology or gel cooling foam to cater to those who run hot while they sleep.

Does a mattress topper make a difference?

Yes. A mattress topper sits above your existing mattress to offer a more comfortable and tailored sleeping experience. Having a mattress that is too firm for your liking can cause interrupted or poor sleep. Therefore, it’s important to ensure your mattress is working hard to create the best sleeping experience for your personalised needs.

Whether it’s an onslaught of family members for the weekend, extra bodies at the beach house or piles of kids for a sleepover, a sofa bed is a flexible furniture piece that can be called on whenever the need arises.

“Your home should reflect your lifestyle, so ask yourself how you’re going to use the space and this will determine which sofa bed is right for you,” says Rune Svendsen, IKEA home furnishing specialist. “We take the approach that every square metre in a home should be both useful and flexible.”

Are comfortable sofa beds a thing?

It goes without saying that comfort is a key consideration, but make sure you’re thinking about it in both configurations – sofa and bed. If the sofa will be in frequent use as a lounge and only called on a few times a year for guests, then it makes sense to focus on seating comfort.

If you’re anticipating lots of guests, and especially if they’re adults, make sure the bed is comfortable to sleep on. Yes, you probably need to lie on it in the store. Buying in store will also allow you to test the mechanism – it should be smooth and easy to operate.

“The experience with most sofa beds is generally pretty uncomfortable – you hit a middle bar in the middle of the night for example,” says Koala’s product designer Adam Harrigan. He advises looking for sofa beds that have “multiple layers for optimal comfort and support” whether they’re being used as a sofa, or as a bed.

Sofa bed styles

Sleeper sofas come in several styles, each with its own pros and cons.

“Just like a bed, the size, mattress and mechanics are personal and you need to ensure that the functionality and style suit your individual needs,” advises Rune.

The simplest is a click-clack style, where the back of the seat folds back to create a flat bed. It’s a pretty basic form of sofa, often without arms, but very easy to use.

In stacked styles, like Koala’s award-winning sofa beds, the seat cushion itself unfolds to become the mattress. There’s no extra folding mechanism required, which keeps the weight down, but the seat can be fairly firm, and possibly less comfortable for sitting.

Some modular sofas can simply be reconfigured, using long chaise and ottoman sections to form a large bed, jigsaw-puzzle style.

For the traditional fold-out styles, the metal folding mechanism, frame and a mattress (usually foam) is underneath the seat cushion, and you’ll need to lift and pull it out to set up the bed.

On the plus side, it’s indistinguishable from a standard sofa, but it’s also likely to be significantly heavier and possibly more expensive.

Size and flexibility

Even if you have a dedicated spare room, consider a sofa bed for the space so that the room can do double duty as a study or kids’ playroom when you don’t have guests. Conversely, think about adding a sleeper sofa to your study or playroom so that it can step up to filling in a spare room when required.

Another factor to consider is extra storage. “For small spaces, it’s worth considering a sofa bed with added storage, so you can store bedlinen and towels for guests in the same spot,” says Rune. “Daybeds are also a great alternative to a traditional sofa bed, and may also include drawers beneath.”

Sofa beds are available in sizes from single to king, depending on the style. Make sure you measure the space where the sofa bed will go, and remember to measure out the fully-extended size. Try to leave at least 60cm clearance at the end and sides of the bed so your guests can easily navigate the space.

If it’s true that we spend a third of our lives in bed – and even more if you count those times we’ve pressed “snooze” on the alarm – so it’s vital we get this piece of furniture just right. A double bed is somewhere between a single and queen in size, and is the just-right option if you’re buying a bed for a kid or teen, or for a guest bedroom that is used only seldomly. It works as well if you’re the cuddly type, who loves nothing better than a night spent entangled with your beloved.

Double beds come in a huge range of styles and types. Some love the look of a traditional wooden frame, while others like a bed-head look perhaps finished in velvet or linen. Or keep things simple and dress your bed in beautiful quilts and linen instead. The size and look of a double bed in a room varies massively, depending on the height of the bed, and the depth of your mattress. Some come with elaborate headboards and footboards that make them appear more bulky, but others lie almost futon-like and minimalist on the floor. A footboard can close in a room, and is better suited to larger spaces, where a headboard can add some grand elegance in a simple way. Some double beds have no headboard at all, and will sit against a wall instead. A double bed frame looks beautiful when there is something special for it to prop against, perhaps panelling or plaster on the wall behind, a shelf or a statement bed head. Consider what type of bed will suit your space to help make yours a beautiful bedroom.

These double beds span a wide range of designs that will appeal to a variety of tastes and budgets and are all durable, great quality, and stylish.

What is a double bed size?

No matter what size bed frame your room or situation calls for, it’s important to measure the frame up carefully before you purchase. Some beds are much wider than the mattress they fit, while others are more streamlined and fit neatly. A double size mattress in Australia measures 137 x 190cm (or 54″ x 74″) and fits a double bed which is usually about 143cm across. Most mattress makers and sellers will give the exact measurements of each bed they sell on their website.

How much bigger is a queen than a double?

A queen mattress measures 153 x 203cm, and a queen bed will usually be about 160cm in width. It’s best to measure the size of your room and make sure you have space for bedside tables, powerpoints and anything else you need before you purchase a bed frame and mattress.

How big is a double bed?

Australian beds usually come in five sizes for adults, and include single, king single, double, queen and king. They are designed to fit the standard mattress sizes in Australia, and are usually 5 to 15cm wider than the mattress they will accomodate, but will vary. Australia has a unique set of bed (mattress) sizes that differ from those in the United States and in the United Kingdom. However, Australian bed sizes are very similar to those in New Zealand. Australian mattress sizes span cot to super king sizes, though long single and super king are more rare.

Single mattress
92 cm x 188 cm
Long Single mattress
92 cm x 203 cm
King Single mattress
107 cm x 203 cm
Double mattress
138 cm x 188 cm
Queen mattress
153 cm x 203 cm
King mattress
183 cm x 203 cm
Super King mattress
203 cm x 203 cm

Is a double bed OK for two adults?

A double bed can generally fit two average-sized adults, as it measures 135 cm wide and 190 cm long. Many couples prefer a larger queen bed or a king-sized bed. Not all makers or even big-time bed sellers now make double bed sizes, they’re considered a little more old fashioned for a couple. But many couples also prefer the closeness a double bed frame offers, as well as the size proportionate to their bedrooms. Queen and king-sized beds are becoming the norm, while double beds can sometimes feel too small for two people or too big for one. However, a double bed is a practical choice for adults who are average height and size, and they’re a great option for those children who seem to be growing faster by the minute.

Nothing is worse than ending a long day filled with work and/or socialising only to be greeted by an old mattress that is so old (and severely overdue for an upgrade) that your back starts hurting just by looking at it.

Dramatic, we know. But, it’s pretty close to the truth.

There are many reasons why buying a mattress can be overwhelming or stressful. Unlike the simpler joys of picking up a decorative throw pillow or statement vase, there is a bit more at stake when choosing your next mattress.

From finding the perfect level of firmness that isn’t too soft or, well, too firm, to choosing between memory foam or pocket springs, there’s much to consider. Or, if you’re sharing a bed with a partner, you’ll need to find one that will work for both of your individual needs and preferences.

So, to help you find the best mattress to invest in, we break down what to look for when purchasing your next mattress, as well as our top picks of the best mattresses to shop in Australia – with affordability and durability top of mind.

What are the different types of mattresses?

Innerspring or pocket spring mattress

Innerspring mattresses are generally made up of three layers, the middle layer is where the spring coils live. The coils are then surrounded by ‘support layers’: a plush topper and a foam base.

Memory foam or foam mattress

There are three main types of memory foam – traditional, open cell and gel memory foam. All three work in a similar way where they mould to the contours of your body for a more personalised support. However, if you tend to run hot when you sleep, we’d recommend opting for an open cell or a gel-infused memory foam mattress as traditional memory foam tends to trap more heat in.

Hybrid mattress

The best of both worlds. A hybrid mattress has a cloud-like foam layer at the top with pocket springs in the middle for ultimate support.

Mattress in a box

If you’re in the midst of moving, opting for a mattress in a box option may be worthwhile. Generally, boxed mattresses are memory foam mattresses, but some hybrid mattresses are also able to be packaged neatly for your convenience.

Which mattress type will suit me?

Choosing the best mattress that is most suited to you will depend heavily on your preferred sleeping positions.

Side sleepers

If you sleep on your side, it’s recommended to opt for memory foam or foam mattresses in general. This is because traditional, gel-infused, and open cell memory foam mattresses reacts to your body heat and pressure and moulds to the contours of your body ensuring a more comfortable and ergonomic sleep.

Back sleepers

If you sleep on your back, you may find innerspring mattresses offer a bit more support. Although, there are foam mattresses that also work well for back sleepers, it is high-quality innerspring mattresses that offer better back support.

Stomach sleepers

Similar to side sleepers, stomach sleepers need pressure relief at various parts of your body. Stomach sleepers may prefer foam mattresses or hybrid mattresses for a good night’s sleep.

What to look for when investing in a new mattress

Delivery

Some mattress retailers offer free delivery as well as attractive trial periods so you can ensure you actually love the mattress you’ve chosen. Some also come conveniently packaged in a box (read: mattress-in-a-box trend).

Warranty

A high-quality mattress can last up to 10 years, so when searching for the best mattress to invest in, ensure the brand and model has a warranty period of 10 years or more.

Customisation

If you’re unsure whether you prefer a firm mattress or a soft mattress, or maybe you’re after a supportive mattress…choosing one with adjustable firmness will make all the difference. This can either be done by flipping around or swapping the foam layers before use – giving you the option to trial different firmnesses for an extended amount of time.

The post The minimalist bed is taking over in 2024 — here’s how to get the look appeared first on Homes To Love.

Between the layers of sheets, pillows, cushions and throws, making a bed is more of an art than most people realise. But you may be pleased to know that as of late, stylists and designers seem to be doing away with all the fluff and fuss and embracing a simpler style more reminiscent of 1950s Italian homes: the coverlet.

It’s generally accepted that people who make their beds in the morning are more likely to be successful. But for those of us who like our sleep, and prefer to leave as little time as possible between waking up and walking out the door, it’s a task that often is the first to get the flick.

And that’s precisely what makes this latest ‘quiet luxury’ trend so appealing. Dressing your bed with a coverlet, bedcover, bedspread — or whatever you know them as — is quick, simple and stylish. It’s the bed-making equivalent of shoving everything in a cupboard before your guests arrive.

The heavyweight design drapes softly over your bed, base and even pillows, depending on how you’d like to style it. “You can neatly tuck your pillows underneath for a really low-key luxe look,” explains Lauren Roe, creative director of I Love Linen. “Or you could tuck the bedcover in at the back of the bed and display all your pillows on top.” Similarly you can choose to leave the edges loose and flowy, or tuck them in for a more refined style.

The oversized heavy linen bed cover gives the bedroom in this renovated Victorian terrace a pared-back and calming quality. (Photography: Prue Ruscoe | Styling: Jack Milenkovic/Atelier Lab | Story: Belle)

What size bedcover should you get?

They’re designed to be oversized and generally come in one-size-fits-all, but I Love Linen’s range — which is part of a collaboration with local furniture house McMullin & Co. — is available in Queen and King sizes. “We chose to make two specific sizes so that it will perfectly fit your bed and you won’t have too much unnecessary or ungainly drape running to the floor in your bedroom,” explains Lauren. “Because of our considered sizing, there’s no need to size up.”

How do you make a bed with a bedcover?

Bedcovers and coverlets are generally crafted from more heavyweight linen — I Love Linen’s are made with 100% French flax linen at 390 GSM compared to the 180 GSM of their regular bedding — but can be slept straight under as a lightweight blanket in summer.

Alternatively, you can drape it over the top of your filled duvet cover and treat it as an extra layer. “For aesthetics, if you have a quilt cover underneath you will get a slightly more filled-out look and feel,” says Lauren.

The best bedcovers to shop

French flax linen heavy becover in Creme

$450, I Love Linen

Also available in natural and white linen, the design of this bedcover has been carefully considered to fall over your bed perfectly — whether that’s a Queen or King size. With a softly frayed edge, it’s a great way to introduce a subtle texture into your bedroom.

Repose heavyweight bedcover in Truffle

$620, Cultiver

Luxury Sydney-based linen house Cultiver recently collaborated with American interior stylist Colin King to curate a collection of pieces for the top of the bed, including a range of bedcovers. Along with this rich Truffle colour, there is also a Royal, Aubergine and Flax colourway available.

Trace heavyweight bedcover in Flax/Truffle

$650, Cultiver

Along with Cultiver’s collection of monochromatic styles is this bedcover design which features a subtle contrasting overlock-stitched stripe. Designed to gently pool on the floor and hug your pillows, it gives a whole new meaning to dressing the bed.

Crinkle bedcover in Elm

$239, Aura Home

For those perhaps a little apprehensive of embracing such a minimal look, this crinkle-textured bedcover could be the answer. Crafted from extra soft pure cotton and finished with a fringed edge detail, it’s also not quite as oversized as some other styles so could be a nice place to start.

Organic cotton and linen oversized bedcover in Grey/Grape

$460, In Bed

Combining comfortable minimalism with a splash of maximalism, this bedcover is a bit of fun. Inspired by the Bauhaus movement and finished in a soft jacquard pattern, it gives pared-back-with-a-side-of-pizzaz.

Nomad coverlet in Sable
