The post Inside Byron Bay’s Sun Ranch hotel, where design and curation were not taken lightly appeared first on Homes To Love.

Drive through the hinterlands of Byron Bay and between a part in the hills and the endless blue skies you will find Sun Ranch. It’s the kind of place that welcomes a Stetson, conjures the smell of leather boots, whose sunny disposition reaches back into the 70s to Cali-style ranches with Spanish flair, where dreams are lived in real time.

The origins of 55-acre, 17-room Sun Ranch lie with a group of seven couples, helmed by Jamie Blakey and Julia Ashwood. All long-term friends and from various creative backgrounds, it was a project destined for success. “We ultimately created a holiday destination where we would all love to spend time immersed in nature,” explains Julia.

“We have known each other for 25 years, so we certainly know one another by now. Each day, as hard as it was, was finished with a cold drink and a good chuckle.” (Photography: Anson Smart)

Mingling with the hotel’s flower child persuasion is a vibe firmly rooted in travel and spaghetti western tropes, where a wooden beaded chandelier (Julia’s favourite piece) hangs above carved timber art and a sunken lounge upholstered in tiger-print velvet. “Ultimately, we fell in love with every fitting, paint colour, fixture, and art piece on the Ranch,” says Julia.

“Design and curation was not something we took lightly. Everything had to have an emphasis on fun and the unexpected. Pushing boundaries keeps people guessing and keeps us inspired to do more.”

JULIA ASHWOOD, CO-FOUNDER AND DESIGNER

“We both travel a lot so we had a good idea on the concept and visually it came together quickly.” Julia and Jamie also implemented the Sun Ranch Regeneration Program, planting 10,000 native plants and trees to revive the flora within the area. (Photography: Anson Smart)

Since Sun Ranch — which sleeps 34 over a range of rooms, barns and suites — first opened its doors in September 2023 (after a “rollercoaster” 2.5-year build, tells Julia), it made quite the splash among guests and the design community alike with its opportunities for “the right company or individual to take it next level and add new locations both here and around the world. Think Hunter Valley, Margaret River, Big Sur, Ojai. Even a pop-up ‘Sun Ranch Summer Camp’ in Lake Wanaka!”

Julia says that they are open to a range of ways to move forward with the sale of the property, from partnerships to investors. “The Ranch has been getting a lot of interest, not just from within Australia but globally too.” Whatever lies in Sun Ranch’s future, we expect it’s about to take off at a gallop.

The property, at 17 Byron Creek Road, Coopers Shoot, was listed for sale with Pacifico Property but did not end up selling. You can check out the hotel’s current website here.

The rolling hills of Sun Ranch

How does one spend time at Sun Ranch? “As the sun moves across the land you almost want to follow along,” says Julia. “Wake up slow in a pool suite or a barn, wander in for yoga and a complimentary market-fresh ranch breakfast.”

The lobby, also referred to as ‘The Lair’, features a “delicious, spiral terracotta-paved sunken lounge”.

Filled with treasures from around the world

“Each space is filled with incredible one-off pieces Jamie and I sourced across the years,” says Julia. “Most of these were found throughout the US and Mexico. We took a fantastic trip and ended up coming home with a shipping container full of treasures from carved timber art, tapestries, and loads of personality chairs!”

With a flight time of under seven hours from the east coast, it’s little wonder that Aussies have made Bali their go-to holiday destination — we alone comprise almost a quarter of the country’s yearly visitors. There’s just something in the gorgeous beaches, friendly people, and budget prices that keep us going back for more.

Although Bali is small — a province of Indonesia — it’s home to incredibly varied landscapes and countless smaller destinations. According to Airbnb‘s data, the top towns in Bali that Australians like to visit are island Nusa Penida and the southern-most point, Kecamatan Kuta Selatan (a.k.a south Kuta, home to the popular surf spot, Uluwatu).

When it comes to ticking boxes, Bali’s villas and resorts satisfy a few. Airbnb data states that, while searching for stays in Bali, Aussies tend to pinpoint properties with pools, a beachfront location, views, and private rooms. To save you from trawling through quite literally thousands of options, we’ve rounded up eight luxurious Bali villas that totally take the cake.

For those who love to be in and amongst the pulse of a fast-paced city, Melbourne is arguably one of the best places to visit. And when it comes to picking Melbourne accommodation, you’re spoilt for choice.

Blessed with an electrifying mix of architecture from towering Federation and Art Deco buildings to sleek, contemporary apartment complexes, design-led travellers can take their pick from a palette of uber-stylish accommodation options.

How many days do you need in Melbourne?

When looking into Melbourne accommodation, the biggest question most people ask is: “How many days do I really need?” Like most cities, depending on your interests the perfect amount can vary. If you’re staying in the CBD, booking Melbourne accommodation for four days should suffice. Browsing vintage boutiques, getting your daily hit of its famous espresso, and seeing the sights can all be covered within a few days.

However, if you’re looking to venture outside the main part of the city and perhaps take a day trip to nearby Daylesford or Phillip Island, you might want to extend your Melbourne accommodation for a few more days.

Is Melbourne a good place to stay?

Melbourne is a great place to stay and one of the most exciting places to visit in Australia. It is consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in the Asia Pacific region, and offers an experience that is rich in culture and diversity. Much of the CBD is reminiscent of a modern European sophistication; many of the unassuming city laneways are basically portals to a series of glittering galleries, world-class restaurants and a buzzing nightlife.

Better yet, Melbourne balances its historical architecture with the energy of a cosmopolitan city where heritage buildings stand side-by-side with sleek high-rises, making visitors (no matter their taste, whether luxurious or budget) spoilt for choice when searching for that perfect holiday accommodation.

What is the best time of year to visit Melbourne?

Again, this is an it-depends-on-your-trip question. There is one thing to consider and we’ll be blunt about it: if you enjoy the temperate Australian coastal climate, you’re going to find that Melbourne’s weather is significantly worse than Sydney’s. It’s much more unpredictable.

For your best chances at enjoyable weather, plan your trip and accommodation during shoulder seasons in March to May or September to November.

Train, bus, lightrail, ferry, or by foot, there’s plenty of ways to get around Sydney, the best mode of transport depends on where you’re staying and where you’re going. If you’re staying in the CBD and aren’t travelling far, walking is a fabulous way to see the city. You can jump on and off the lightrail if you get tired of walking. The City Circle train can take you around the city, from Central Station to Circular Quay and there are buses and trains that can take you to Bondi, the inner-west, North Sydney and beyond. Ubers and taxis are aplenty in the city and never hard to get. A ferry ride is a great way to see Sydney Harbour and there are ferries that can take you to the north, east or west.

You can always hire a car if you need, but be sure to check that you’re hotel offers parking. If you’re staying at Ovolo Woolloomoloo, you have complementary access to a PEUGEOT 408 GT Fastback Plug-in Hybrid car which is handy if you want the freedom to explore or get out of the city for lunch or a scenic drive.

Is COMO Shambhala Estate Bali’s most restorative wellness resort? https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/travel/como-shambhala-estate-ubud-bali-review/ Thu, 23 May 2024 02:07:09 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=255659 Editor-in-chief of Belle Magazine, Tanya Buchanan was treated to a visit to the Balinese luxury wellness retreat. Here's her experience.

I am excited to be snatching a few days for a quick de-stress and much-needed mind rejuvenation at wellness nirvana Como Shambhala Estate – it’s just five nights, but my anticipation is high! Emerging from a very pleasant Virgin X flight from Sydney to Bali’s Denpasar, a refreshing subtropical downpour greets me, and then it’s a comfortable hour’s drive to my jungle home away from home.

A few days solo in my gorgeous residence, enjoying delicious healthy food prepared by a team of talented chefs and some incredible therapies is just the ticket. I had brought about 10 books, which I was determined to read.

Unlike in the real world, I had two personal assistants, Purna and Setiawan. One of these super-efficient organisers was always on standby, including for menu selections, treatment bookings, local knowledge and a speedy buggy to drive around in. Unleashed from the office; I preferred strolling the estate at leisure.

The brainchild of founder and hotel entrepreneur Christina Ong, Como Shambhala Estate is renowned for its holistic approach to wellness and breathtaking natural setting – it’s an exclusive private retreat where you rarely cross paths with fellow guests.

This jungle nirvana inspires transformation and nurtures the senses.

The grounds of the estate offer many opportunities for rest and relaxation. (Photo: Supplied)

I am a treatment enthusiast and look forward to sampling from the extensive spa menu. The signature massage, a harmonious blend of acupressure, reflexology and aromatherapy, promises to soothe tired muscles and release stress. I made my way through the spa menu with an array of massages, among them the nurturing and rejuvenating Como Shambhala massage, plus a fantastic Sundari facial.

Pilates and yoga were also on the agenda. I was lucky to have one-on-one sessions with Italian yoga teacher Monica, who was strict and fabulous and described her techniques so beautifully that I wish I could work with her daily.

I have never been good at meditating – there is no sedating the hamsters running around in my mind – so I was interested to see if I could make it work. Our fabulous meditation guru ran us through the steps focusing on breathwork – it sent me into a gorgeous sleep in the lovely hut at the base of the estate but I’m not sure I can replicate that at home.

The impressive hydrotherapy pool is a great design, and exercising in a warm pool with an instructor directing your every move with a beautiful view out to the jungle hardly feels like a workout.

At the heart of Como Shambhala’s philosophy is its emphasis on nourishing body and soul. The cuisine celebrates raw, organic ingredients sourced locally, ensuring every dish tastes terrific and nourishes the body.

With its open-air setting, the Glow restaurant offers panoramic views of the jungle, making dining a holistic experience. The delicious freshly brewed ginger lemon tea in the spa and restaurant is a big favourite with guests, and I have been making it at home since I returned.

Accommodation is designed to be a seamless extension of its jungle environment and wellness ethos. The rooms and villas, perched on the edge of the Ayung River, offer breathtaking views of the surrounding forest and rice paddies. Each residence is a private haven of comfort and luxury, with traditional Balinese design elements harmoniously blended with modern amenities.

Spacious terraces, private plunge pools, and outdoor showers allow guests to immerse themselves in the tranquillity of the jungle, fostering a deep connection with nature. I loved my villa and canopy bed with a view of the jungle and enjoyed my semi-outdoor bath. One wellness goal I am going to strive for is regular repeat visits to this jungle nirvana.

Tasmania’s lively waterfront capital city is Australia’s worst-kept secret. If you imagine a Venn diagram overlapping scenic wilderness, heritage charm, thriving art, outdoor adventure, and mouth-watering local food, Hobart would sit proudly in the middle.

In between losing yourself in eclectic art exhibitions at the bucket-list Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), catching and eating your own fresh seafood for lunch, descending rugged mountains by bike, or discovering hidden laneways brimming with unique vintage finds, you’ll need somewhere special to stay.

Luckily, Hobart has no shortage of charming heritage homes and quaint cottages for your next trip down south.

What is Hobart weather like?

Despite experiencing four distinct seasons, Hobart is Australia’s second-driest capital city. Tasmania’s position by the Southern Ocean (the world’s weather engine) means the climate can vary on any given day. However, Hobart’s yearly temperature typically sits between 5°C and 21°C, rarely dropping below 2°C in winter or climbing above 28°C in summer.

The best time of year to visit Hobart for outdoor activities is between January and March when the heat of summer has passed its peak. These months are also the driest and the water is warm enough for a swim!

“Fit, healthy bodies, toned to perfection reclining on daybeds beside a magnesium pool, dipping in and out of hot and cold plunge pools, enjoying farm-to-table snacks made with fresh produce from an urban farm, while diligently working on their laptops; welcome to the bathhouse, a brave new world of wellness,” says Belle contributing editor, Kirstie Clements.

In the quest for health, wellness and longevity, bathhouses are a burgeoning trend across the globe and have become an integral component of a modern luxury lifestyle. In a world increasingly preoccupied with daily stresses, our prioritisation of health, wellness and mental clarity has taken centre stage. This has given rise to a new love in our own backyard.

Wellness has taken the plunge, and so have we. Here is our list of Australia’s best bathhouses to add to your wellness routine.

TotalFusion Platinum, Newstead, QLD

Photography: Georgina Egan

Kirstie Clements recently reviewed TotalFusion Platinum for Belle magazine describing the new wellness sanctuary as “a multi-storey no-expense-spared 9000 square-metre urban sanctuary in Brisbane’s Newstead.” This is what she had to say:

“The day may be punctuated by a stint in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber, salt or snow cave, the infrared sauna for a snooze on a NASA-endorsed red-light therapy bed, by heading to the rooftop pool area to enjoy a float, or by shocking yourself into wellness by trying the 5 degrees celsius magnesium plunge pool.”

Opened in Brisbane’s Newstead in 2023, the $80-million gym and wellness centre is the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. “TotalFusion Platinum has quite literally thought of everything an holistic New Age health club could possibly offer – and then upped the ante. Designed by architects, Caroline Choker and Vince Alafaci of ACM, the calming space features a glass elevator and sculptural, custom-made staircase, Roman-travertine flooring, Australian timber wall panelling and bronze smoked mirrors, strategically planted and finished with an indoor fish pond.”

“It has incorporated all the wellbeing aspects of science and nature, to create a truly new standard of health club,” says Kirstie.

The gym membership starts at $55 per week, and the wellness memberships grant unlimited access to hot and cold pools, infrared saunas, traditional saunas, and cutting-edge recovery tools… with pricing on enquiry.

The Bathhouse, Albion, QLD

Described as what is soon to be one of the world’s most luxurious bath houses, The Bathhouse Albion will be opening its doors in the growing Albion Fine Trades Precinct in June 2024, offering a curated blend of luxurious restoration and rejuvenation. It is set to redefine luxury and wellness in the architecturally-designed space, akin to European bathhouses in centuries foregone.

Expansive ceilings, atmospheric lighting, and an abundance of travertine stone will set the tone when you step inside where you’ll find the heated vitality pool, 12 degrees celsius cold plunge, a 6 degrees celsius ice bath, tiered steam room, float room, traditional sauna, Finnish sauna, infrared saunas, refreshment & tea lounge, and luxurious change rooms.

“Our aim is to transcend the standard of service and experience available in the Australian market and create a space where our guests can re-energise and restore, as part of a balanced lifestyle in an unmatched seang,” says Managing Director, James Walsh.

The bathhouse can be enjoyed casually or as a member with sessions starting from $59.

The Banya Bathhouse, Mullumbimby, NSW

An immersive social, bathing and dining experience in the heart of the Byron Hinterland, The Banya Bathhouse is a meticulously styled day spa housed in the bones of an old 1920s bank.

From the street, an unassuming red brick building from another century, but one step inside and you’ll be treated to a visual feast. Continue past the restaurant and fully stocked cocktail bar, and your eyes will be drawn to the sundrenched pool area, where a large black and white marble check-tiled pool steals the show, alongside two hot mineral spas, a wood-fired sauna, cold bucket contrast showers, steam room and a cold plunge pool.

And just up the terrazzo tiled staircase, you’ll be greeted by a pink rooftop adorned with comfortable leather daybeds under canopy umbrellas (and yes, you can order your cocktails to be delivered up here) along with private massage rooms where you can fully unwind.

Guests are encouraged to stay a while and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, and why wouldn’t you want to? Ninety minutes in the bathhouse goes for $60, with discounts offered for group bookings.

Soak Bathhouse, Mermaid Beach and West End, QLD; Bondi location coming soon

soak-bathhouse-west-end-people-walking-and-spas

Soak Bathhouse is a communal wellness centre with locations across urban destinations that offer relaxation and rejuvenation services in as little as 90 minutes. And in good news for Sydney-siders, Soak Bathhouse will be opening in the heart of Bondi Junction in late 2024, bringing with it a new type of social wellness and relaxation to the eastern suburbs.

Soak Bathhouse was designed to help its customers incorporate microdoses of wellness in an accessible and affordable way. That’s why its central West End rooftop (yes, rooftop!) location features seven spas, an indoor/outdoor warm mineral pool, sauna, steam room, cold plunge pool and infrared saunas, and offers LED facials and massages. Plus, you can choose how you Soak, with mid-week early bird sessions and the Soak and Sip packages available.

Soak sessions start from $39 per person.

Providing traditional bathing since 1895, the Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa in Daylesford’s historic region draws water, rich in magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc and sodium, from its natural source and is heated to 38 degrees celsius for a sensorial experience. Guests can also visit the aroma steam room, spa couches, salt and magnesium pool, walk-in cool down pool, creekside pool and mineral hammam, which combines mineral-rich water and steam.

Prices start from $58.

These days, it’s common for people to juggle multiple roles, but what’s rare is for an old factory to take on the ethos without losing its charm. For Milk Haus, that’s exactly what happened, with the converted 19th-century cheese factory becoming a sustainable eatery, a retail pop-up, a cooking school and farm-style lodgings.

Located in the scenic foothills just outside of Milton on the NSW South Coast, Milk Haus was established in 2014 as a wholefood canteen, with owners Kitty and Nat coming onboard in 2020 to continue its story. The former corporate executives dreamed of offering fresh food in an idyllic setting while creating community connections.

Today, the garden-to-plate eatery is a sprawling operation offering a seasonal menu from their kitchen garden that includes citrus trees, herbs and vegies – all thriving under a no-dig policy. Inside, the eatery’s exposed beams and rustic windows remind visitors of the factory’s past, while events like Bake Club with Anneka Manning and retail pop-ups uphold its legacy.

Visitors can also stay at Farm Haus, a four-bedroom cottage with views of the garden and pastures. The dairy farmer’s cottage was built in the 1930s and boasts airy interiors while keeping its country feel with a farmhouse kitchen and wraparound windows. The well-appointed rooms are snug and private, while luxury comforts such as grazing plates, wine packages and an in-haus cook are available for those lazy days. The cottage is a welcome respite for travellers and conscious consumers alike.

With its stone and pink-icing-coloured facade, it’s hard to miss boutique accommodation Miss Midgley’s. Occupying a prime position on James Street in leafy New Farm, the heritage-listed building has served many purposes throughout its 160-or-so-year history. Before being transformed into chic, modern accommodation, the building served as a private home, an orphanage, the home of a former Queensland premier, a hospital and a private school, headed by Miss Midgley’s namesake Annie Midgley.

Today, the tuff stone-built building serves as one of Brisbane’s most stylish places to stay thanks to mother and daughter duo Lisa and Isabella White, who transformed the building into the five gorgeous self-contained apartments that make Miss Midgley’s.

Featuring a tasteful palette of pink, mauve, red and terracotta, the interiors of each luxury apartment emanate warmth. Providing an ultra-chic home away from home experience, each features a full kitchen complete with farmhouse sink as well as luxurious bathrooms, private outdoor areas and free parking.

As for the shared amenities, expect a resort-meets-country-manor experience courtesy of a picture-perfect heated outdoor pool, book library and petit laundry, all in the heart of Brisbane’s trendiest riverside suburb.

Four of the apartments have two bedrooms while the fifth, the Principal’s Office, is a ground-floor one-bedroom studio complete with a king bed, sunken garden and generous deck. If you’re looking to book a holiday with your furry friend in tow, be sure to book either the Principal’s Office or the Locker Room, as both of these ground-floor apartments are dog-friendly and offer tranquil outdoor sitting areas. You can also book the entire house, which sleeps up to 18 people in total, lending itself well to a tasteful hens do or milestone birthday celebration with family and friends.

Assembly Hall is the largest apartment of the five, spanning two bedrooms with king-sized beds and a sumptuous lounge room, making it ideal for longer stays or weekend getaways with friends. A cosy deck area that captures stunning city views makes for the perfect place to perch with a drink in hand at the end of the day.

Offering the keys to luxe apartment-style living, Miss Midgley’s places you in easy walking distance of trendy bars, cafes, restaurants and shops. We recommend starting with a coffee at one of the various cafes on James Street, followed by a window shop (or real shop) in the many high-end homewares and clothing stores in Fortitude Valley before heading back for a refresh, and finally, a well-deserved wine and dine at wood-fired bistro, Agnes Restaurant.

Miss Midgley’s is available to book through its website or through Airbnb, with prices starting at around $370 per night and going up to around $2,750 per night for the entire property.

Dirty Janes has opened a third location in one of Australia’s most travelled-to country towns https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/dirty-janes-orange-nsw/ Tue, 30 Apr 2024 06:59:22 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=253516 A north-west regional town just gained an icon.

The post Dirty Janes has opened a third location in one of Australia’s most travelled-to country towns appeared first on Homes To Love.

Facebook Marketplace is great, but nothing quite compares to perusing a vintage store in real-time. Running your hands along an antique sofa, finding the perfect curio to fill the blank space on your side table, or selecting an artwork you know you won’t find anywhere else; it’s the thrill-of-the-hunt that simply can’t be replicated by its online equivalents.

Dirty Janes has become a country town icon, a mecca for seekers of pre-loved furniture, homewares, clothing, jewellery, art books, and records. A beacon for travellers to Bowral, and later Canberra, the marketplace is the joint creation of Jane Crowley and her father, antiques dealer Athol Salter. And now, it’s opening a third location in what is likely one of Australia’s most visited country towns: Orange, New South Wales.

“I’ve been eyeing off Orange for a few years,” says Jane. “There is a real buzz to the town; the people, the food scene, the visitor economy. It’s a city with a fabulous artistic scene. It’s also a hub where people will travel for the weekend.”

Dirty Janes Orange location will operate in the same format loved and lauded at its Bowral and Canberra locations, featuring over 65 stalls manned by independent small businesses. Also on-site will be a cafe serving simple but delicious country-style food made from local ingredients; Salters, named after Jane’s father.

“We have vintage dealers who sell furniture, artwork, LPs, china, gardenware. We have artisans who make sculptures, artworks, and hats,” says Jane. The store is situated in the former PCYC building that has been renovated to suit — bar the old scoreboard on the wall and basketball markings kept for their character.

And, there’s more to come. “We’re then going to tackle the upstairs rooms in about 12 months, creating room for more stallholders and a space for workshops.”

Dirty Janes Orange is open 7 days a week from 10am until 5pm, and can be found at 98 Byng Street, Orange.

Inside Jane Crowley’s Bowral home

It should come as little surprise that the brand’s namesake lays her head to rest in a home full of spectacular vintage finds with spades of history and familial stories. “…we’ve got some beautiful family pieces that aren’t necessarily flash, but they’ve got so many memories,” she told Country Style.

It was Jane’s handiwork and penchant for upcycling that brought back the c1920s home in Bowral from its garish 70s state. “It’s great because for the kids, it’s just a way of life. You don’t go to a shop and buy something new, you go to an op shop or you go to a garage sale – and you never know what you’ll find.”

You can now book Peppa Hart’s Bali home, Casa La Playa, for your next holiday https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/travel/peppa-hart-bali-casa-la-playa/ Wed, 24 Apr 2024 01:07:37 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=252831 Founder of Peppa Hart, Sophie Bell, invites you into her Mediterranean-inspired oasis, La Playa.

The post You can now book Peppa Hart’s Bali home, Casa La Playa, for your next holiday appeared first on Homes To Love.

Every morning, a private chef cooks you breakfast in a light and airy villa filled with bespoke furnishings. Daily housekeeping and a concierge service ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible. Your phone is absolutely set to Do Not Disturb. Welcome to Casa La Playa.

Surrounded by verdant rice fields, Sophie Bell (of creative agency Peppa Hart) has flung open the doors to her new luxury boutique accommodation, beckoning quiet mornings, sun-drenched afternoons by the pool and the kind of relaxation you can only find on the tropical island of Bali.

Sophie moved over to Bali from her Northern Hinterlands home with her family back in 2022. After buying two almost-finished villas in Seseh, a gorgeous village where rice paddies meet the seaside, Sophie and her family got to work on transforming a blank canvas into a jaw-dropping oasis reminiscent of an Amalfi Coast villa.

“My biggest inspiration definitely comes from travel and especially the Mediterranean. The colours, textures, food, architecture and lifestyle really speak to me, and it’s a feeling I want to be surrounded by in my home,” Sophie says.

la-playa-cream-couch-living-room
Light floods each of the villas, illuminating bespoke furnishing like this Togo-style lounge set. (Photo:supplied)

Given that one of the villas welcomes guests full-time and the other, the Bell’s family home, is rented out while they’re away, it makes sense that Sophie would want the villas to be pared-back and easy to maintain, but that’s not to say La Playa is short on style and character.

“The bones of the villas are neutral, everything is finished in a creamy off-white and then we add personality and warmth with fun art, bold marble pieces, rattan, beautiful books, handmade ceramics and trinkets,” she explains.

la-playa-pool-view
Sophie says the custom marble furnishings, including the living room coffee table, are her favourite pieces at La Playa. “I went hunting around marble yards to find the perfect slabs to create these pieces,” she says. “They then made it all in the villas! They were worried about the pieces being damaged in transport so they decided to make them in their locations, they are never moving – they weigh an absolute tonne!” (Photo: supplied)

In creating such impeccably styled, bespoke interiors, Sophie sourced virtually every piece from local Bali businesses.

“We are surrounded by so many incredible artisans in Bali – literally, anything you put your mind to you can design here which is an absolute dream for me. I draw up my wild ideas and then we go searching for the perfect person to bring it to life for us. Everything from the marble tables to the dining chairs to the brass toilet roll holders to the lamps to the bedheads have all been custom-made,” she says.

Stunning interiors aside, guests can expect their stay to be defined by luxury and convenience, with airport transfers, daily breakfast prepared by a private chef, three king-size bedrooms with ensuites and serene rice field views all part and parcel of the La Playa experience.

A De Sede Terrezza-style sofa provides the perfect place to perch while taking in the peaceful views. (Photo supplied)

As for the process of bringing La Playa into existence, Sophie explains that she and her family pivoted from building from scratch to purchasing a project that was already well underway after seeing Bali’s inflated rental prices post-Covid. Although both the villas were completed in around six months, Sophie says the process of creating a La Playa-style property from start to finish is not for the faint of heart.

“There are a lot of pros, but many hurdles too. You need to tackle language barriers, and completely different building materials, and the rules are very relaxed, but the beauty of building in Bali is you can design up anything your heart desires and bring it to life,” she says.

la-playa-home-office-artwork
Sophie’s home office features a kitchenette, custom marble desk and plenty of coffee table books to peruse. (Photo supplied)

“For us it was great, we got to dip our toe in the building world without being too overwhelmed. We learnt so much and we can’t wait for the next project as we have so much knowledge now.”

The Great Ocean Road, as the name would suggest, is a long road atop rugged escarpments and a near-endless shoreline that stretches across approximately 243 kilometres of Australia’s stunning southern coast. With so much ground to cover, we’ve crafted a comprehensive four-day Great Ocean Road itinerary, complete with places to stop, eat and see.

Unlike any other stretch of highway, the region’s unique topography means that every bend will bring you to another breathtaking vista, gastronomic dining experience or unmissable cliff-top lodging. It is undoubtedly Australia’s most coveted holiday road trip, but plenty remark that they don’t know where to start when planning a trip.

You’ll first start your adventure in the charming town of Torquay, where coastal charm meets surf culture; head to Anglesea and Aireys Inlet, both famous for their stunning coastlines; stop in at Lorne, home of Falls Festival and the festival’s namesake waterfalls; head to Apollo Bay for scenic surrounds and fresh seafood; the Otways for lush rainforests, before trekking to the Twelve Apostles, and ending the trip in Warrnambool, the habitat of southern right whales.

Plus, whether you’re seeking a seaside retreat or a home-away-from-home, you can discover plenty of stays along this iconic coastal route in our list of the best accommodation to stay in along the Great Ocean Road.

Day 1: Torquay

Things to do in Torquay

Situated at the beginning of the Great Ocean Road and boasting world-class surf breaks, Torquay is the surfing capital of Australia and the place where you’ll begin your Great Ocean Road itinerary.

The home of the Rip Curl Pro surfing competition, Bells Beach is the major drawcard for this coastal town. Torquay attracts plenty of surfers, who can be found dwelling at the Australian National Surfing Museum and, of course, in some of the many surf shops in town.

You won’t want to miss the Point Danger Marine Sanctuary Walk’s panoramic views, which are best accompanied with Fishos takeaway fish and chips. Other highly rated eateries include Japanese eatery, Toki, middle-eastern cuisine at The Kyn, and contemporary restaurant, Samesyn.

Then, it’s time to grab a coffee from Ocean Grind and jump in the car to head off to your first stop. Or, keen hikers can meet their road-tripping companions at the next destination and set off along the 44km Surf Coast Walk which continues through Torquay to Aireys Inlet.

Day 2: Anglesea – Aireys Inlet

Things to do in Anglesea

The next stop on your Great Ocean Road itinerary is Anglesea, the destinations for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike with its network of bushwalking trails and stunning views of the ocean. On your way there is the award-winning Bellbrae Estate — it’s further inland but well worth the detour.

Once you arrive at Anglesea, caffeinate at Poppie’s Anglesea before venturing outdoors to Point Addis Marine National Park and to world-class swimming spot, Anglesea Beach.

Things to do in Aireys Inlet

Just 20 minutes down the road, Fairhaven Beach, and the Split Point Lighthouse Walk at Aireys Inlet are both a must-do. Be sure to stop in at The Lighthouse Tea Rooms for a classic ham and cheese toastie, and more delightful culinary adventures await at A La Grecque, Le Comptoir and the Great Ocean Road Gin Tasting Room.

You’ve got another big day ahead of you tomorrow, so take the opportunity for a restful night’s sleep here.

Day 3: Lorne – Apollo Bay

Things to do in Lorne

It’s day three of four on your adventure along the Great Ocean Road, and you’ve made it to Lorne. On your travels today, you’ll follow the road down to Wye River and finish up in Apollo Bay, but not before stopping at some must-see destinations along the way.

Erskine Falls | Great Otway National Park | Victoria | Australia

Lorne, the region that famously hosted Falls Festival (and inspired the name!), is the place to visit for waterfalls, beaches, lush greenery, and a lively atmosphere. Nature enthusiasts will love the iconic Erskine Falls and Rapids, Sheoak Falls, Henderson Falls and Kalimna Falls, all of which are within a short drive of the town.

Or, if you’d prefer to keep your feet on solid concrete, the main street of Lorne is lined with boutique shops, galleries, and museums. Hungry travellers can stop in for a bite at the Little Picket, Greek institution IPSOS, The Bottle of Milk eatery or the newly-opened hatted Merivale establishment, Totti’s Lorne.

Things to do in Wye River

Continuing on down to the small beachside town of Wye River; home to the beloved coastal gems, Wye River General Store and local pub, Wye Beach Hotel.

On your way past, stop in at the Kennett River Nature Walk and you might even spot a koala in its natural habitat!

Things to do in Apollo Bay

You’ll end the day in Apollo Bay, the last major coastal town before the road turns towards the forest. It is a region rich with maritime history and known for its fresh seafood, even hosting the annual Apollo Bay Seafood Festival. As you drive in, take a detour past the Marriner’s Lookout, to soak in the sweeping panoramic vistas of the coastal region.

A top-rated spot for a tipple, visit the Great Ocean Road Brewhouse for a craft beer tasting paddle, and then the Apollo Bay Fishermen’s Co-Op for grilled southern rock lobster with garlic butter and a harbour view. And who would visit Apollo Bay without stopping in for Apollo Bay Bakery’s famous scallop pie?

Day 4: The Otways – Warrnambool

Things to do in The Otways

The Great Otway National Park is home to 103,000 hectares of diverse landscapes, showcasing lush rainforests, dramatic cliffs and rugged coastlines, waterfalls, and diverse wildlife. It is one of the wonders along the Great Ocean Road, and one not to be missed.

You’ll especially want to visit Beech Forest, home to towering redwoods and rainforest waterfalls like Beauchamp Falls, Hopetoun Falls and Triplet Falls.

Things to do in Port Campbell

Heading back towards the coastline, just west of the Otways, you’ll finally find yourself at the foot of the awe-inspiring and most iconic destination along this road: the Twelve Apostles. These stacked limestone rock formations emerging from the misty sea have been carved from years of erosion and now stand towering above the crashing waves. Cameras at the ready!

What else is near the Twelve Apostles?

Once you’ve gotten the shot, continue along the rugged coastline to Gibson Steps, Loch Ard Gorge and Thunder Cave.

Your tummy will be rumbling at this point, so take the opportunity to grab lunch at sustainable eatery, Real Pizza Pasta Salads in Port Campbell, before heading to more unmissable craggy coastline sights: London Bridge, The Grotto, Halladale Point and the Bay Of Martyrs.

Maddy Evennett’s story is not one of chance. The British-born interior designer/stylist turned social media influencer spent her early years working in London (after studying textile design), mood- and vision-boarding her dream home the old-school way; with a collection of magazine cuttings, and later, an ever-expanding assemblage of Pinterest boards. She always knew her first home would be her ultimate canvas, and when she immigrated to Newcastle, newly married to her husband Ben and pregnant with their first child, she didn’t mess around.

Unlike many scouring the housing market, Maddy’s dream was not of a newly built, completely refined, or even freshly renovated home, but rather of the ultimate fixer-upper, something she and Ben could get creative with. And on a suburban street in Redhead, five minutes from the beach, a red-brick, almost ‘uninhabitable’ 1950s bungalow stood partially hidden by an overgrown garden — and it gave Maddy butterflies. “When you know, you know,” she says.

1950s-brick-home-exteriorcottage-exterior
Photography: supplied, Maddy Evennett

Six years, two children, a long list of DIY tasks, and an Instagram fanbase later, Maddy and Ben’s live-in renovation had finally become their dream family home. Stamped with a style uniquely theirs, the palm-framed property blends an English sensibility with the relaxed nature of Australian digs, where travel-sourced and vintage pieces come together with coastal charm and a lived-in vibe.

“Our extensive travels coupled with our passion for culture, design, architecture, and landscaping, have greatly influenced and continue to inspire us.”

MADDY EVENNETT

A small budget and subsequent avoidance of unnecessary outsourcing meant Maddy and Ben were set to take on 90% of the renovation tasks, exposing them to obstacles and steep learning curves. “Often, it felt like one step forward and two steps back,” says Maddy. “The most significant challenge we encountered was the discovery of over 22 cubic metres of concrete buried throughout the back garden. To this day, we still have no idea why there was so much, but it taught us to factor in additional time and resources for the unexpected.”

Build a network

“Knowing who and what to outsource can be overwhelming when you start, especially if it is something new for you. It can take time to find the ‘right people’ for the job but it’s always worth the trial and error, because when you find those people, it makes renovating that much more personal and fun.”

Make your home a smart one

“Invest in good quality, smart-home features for heating, cooling and lighting. Scrimping on these can end up costing you money!”

Plan, plan and plan some more

“It’s never too early, especially if you are living in your renovation while raising a family. You will be much more informed about the value of services and items and won’t need to make impulse decisions and selections. Get clear on your vision from the start!”

Balance the workload

“Outsource where you can in order to save time, and then save money by tackling the projects you know you can do yourself.”

Work in stages

“That way, it’s easier to stay within budget, not get overwhelmed, and actually complete the project before moving onto the next. One space, one room at a time. Kitchens and bathrooms add most value.”

Take lots of photos

“Having completed the majority of the work ourselves, it is incredibly fulfilling to look back and see how much we have achieved in the last six years. So pat yourself on the back before moving on to the next.”

Most of all, create a home you love

“It’s so important to create a purposeful home based on your values, needs and goals. When you love where you live, it betters many other areas of your life.”

Maddy and Ben’s top tips for renovating
maddy-evernett-family-outdoor-living
Maddy and Ben ensured the outdoor living area was fit for their indoor/outdoor lifestyle. “With timeless white cushion covers and ambient festoon lighting, this area is hugely loved by our family, year round and all who visit.”

Although Maddy admits that in her eyes, the home will never be finished, she finds herself, alongside Ben, Florence and Teddy, free to enjoy the fruits of their labour: an afternoon spent lazing in the sunny outdoor living area, an amble through the vegetable garden, a meal shared at the end of the day in the dining nook, a bedtime story told on Florence’s custom-build window seat. It’s a lifestyle she’s passionate about, and one she’s decided to share with others, having just listed the home on Airbnb.

“As a couple who adores hosting friends and family, who prioritise a certain level of detail in personal style and decoration, we have always wanted to host in the boutique rental market. When the opportunity arose to invite others into our tranquil family retreat, we seized it!”

Maddy and Ben are welcoming guests into their coastal family dream home, dubbed ‘Hutchinson House’. Sleeping six guests and a mere five minute stroll from Redhead Beach, the property is available for limited dates, and with Maddy’s 203k-worth of Instagram followers (@maddyevennett), we expect it will book out quickly.

“Our home is a calm tropical oasis, nestled among swaying palms by the beach,” describes Maddy. Departing from its overgrown state, the perfectly planned front garden features a timber walkway and layered planting that complements the home’s sage accents.

Maddy thanks her background in design and decoration, as well as Ben’s determination and self-taught skills for the success of their renovation.

Photography: Maddy Evennett

“The open-plan kitchen and living area are the heart of our family life,” says Maddy, who spent much of her time curating and collecting pieces found throughout these spaces. “From South African handmade serving ware to French antique paintings, boutique British sconces, and Tasmanian oak shelves, each item has a purpose and adds charm to our home.”

Photography: Maddy Evennett

The built-in dining nook is the gathering place for many immediate and extended family meals.

Photography: Maddy Evennett

The living area was completed as part of ‘Stage 1’ in 2016. To ensure the space would stand up to little hands and feet, Maddy says she opted for a sofa with a washable slipcover from Sofa & Soul and swaps out cushions when needed.

Photography: Maddy Evennett

Maddy and Ben’s bedroom, a.k.a. “the sanctuary”, was one of the first spaces to undergo the rigorous DIY process. “When you live in a renovation, it’s good for the mind to leave the work behind the bedroom door so you can rest and reset.” French doors open onto a wraparound deck, an ideal spot for peaceful mornings with a book and a cup of tea, tells Maddy.

Photography: Maddy Evennett

It’s hard to believe that Florence’s gorgeous wallpapered bedroom started its life as a “pokey storage room”. Intending to create a safe space that would grow with their daughter, Maddy and Ben added a built-in seat and shelving. “I love seeing Florence choose to play in her room on her own,” says Maddy. “Often after a big activity or outing, she will say to me, ‘I’m going to go and play in my bedroom now and have some quiet time.'”

Photography: Maddy Evennett

Like Florence’s, Teddy’s bedroom was once “awkward”, measuring 3.6m x 2.1m. Thanks to thoughtful planning and clever design choices, Teddy now enjoys a whimsical sleep-space that embraces his character and personality.

Photography: Maddy Evennett

Space-saving bunk beds were just what the doctor ordered in the family’s guest bedroom-slash-home office.

Photography: Maddy Evennett

Never passing up a moment to slow down and take it all in, the couple installed an additional built-in lounge on the rear timber deck overlooking the garden.

Photography: Maddy Evennett

As a family who relies on the BBQ a few times a week, Maddy and Ben knew they could justify a custom outdoor kitchen.

Photography: Maddy Evennett

“I love walking home from the beach, opening our gate and being able to walk straight to our hot outdoor shower.”

Photography: Maddy Evennett

Once “utterly chaotic”, the garden serves as a functional oasis for Maddy, Ben, and their two kids. “The garden has evolved immensely over time, from a small and cluttered backyard to a luscious green space for our kids to play, plant veggies, and explore.”

5 of the most stunning towns in regional NSW and where to stay in each https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/travel/regional-nsw-towns-accommodation/ Tue, 16 Apr 2024 05:50:11 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=252121 From Berry to Byron, here are our favourite NSW towns for picturesque weekends away.

The post 5 of the most stunning towns in regional NSW and where to stay in each appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Regional NSW has no shortage of picture-perfect country travel destinations, from magical small towns to wine regions steeped in centuries of history. As the gateway to so many incredible destinations wedged firmly between mountains, coastal regions and rolling valleys, Sydney affords its locals direct access to some of the nation’s most beautiful spots for weekend getaways. So much so, that it would be a shame to not take full advantage of its central spot on the map.

Like picking a favourite child, it’s near impossible to lay claim to the best regional towns in NSW, but in the name of science, we’ve narrowed it down to five.

What to do in Berry, NSW

Voted Best Small Town in NSW Top Town Awards, Berry may no longer be the NSW South Coast’s ‘best kept secret’, but it is still simply the best.

A precise and beautiful blend of country and coast, of village charm and city bustle, Berry inspires a tree change in even the most die-hard CBD fans among us, with plenty of reasons to visit.

The picturesque town is a popular escape for glamorous Sydneysiders, offering epicurean adventures, stunning nature destinations and a touch of history. It boasts an award-winning winery in Two Figs, locally-made gourmet wares and famous baked goods, read: Milkwood Bakery and the Berry Donut Van, and is perfectly located near beaches and nature trails like Seven Mile Beach, Sand Track Loop Walk and Drawing Room Rocks Trail.

The rooms at Bundara Farm are drenched in sunlight, thanks to the gorgeous original colonial-style windows. (Photography: Abbie Melle | Story: Country Style).

There is no lack of stylish accommodation in the Shoalhaven region either. With quaint country cottages to farm retreats, you can stay in the charming Bundara Farm alongside mini horses and cattle, or Neale Whitaker’s Taylors of Berry and enjoy commanding views of the escarpment and beyond.

From Sydney, Berry is an easy two-hour amble down the Princes Highway, or just over two hours from Canberra, making it a prime position for a short weekend away.

Striking and charming in equal measure, these are some of the best Berry Airbnbs to make you swoon.

“With the guesthouse, we wanted to share this experience we love so much with other people,” Neale told Australian House & Garden about Taylors of Berry (Photography: Rachael Tag | Stylists: David Novak-Piper, Neale Whitaker).

What to do Milton, NSW

Antiques and arts, boutique shopping and gourmet experiences await in the picture-perfect country town of Milton in the South Coast’s Shoalhaven region.

The bucolic, coastal town is a charming mix of old and new, and is the ultimate foodie destination of the south coast. From bakeries and wineries to kitchen garden restaurants and more, there’s no shortage of enchanting local eateries to explore.

Once you’ve had your fill, explore beautiful bush walks with spectacular views like Pigeon House Mountain or Mt Bushwalker in Little Forest Plateau, and find your zen with spots for yoga and meditation along the way.

And then there are the town’s serious style credentials, with thriving boutique hotels and clothing and homewares stores upping the style points. Favourite stays include The Stables at The Old Schoolhouse Milton and Gwen, by Washerwomans Social Club, but there’s simply no shortage.

Just a three-hour drive south from Sydney and tucked between the neighbouring towns of Nowra and Ulladulla, if you’re planning your visit already, here are the most stylish Airbnbs in the majestic south coast town of Milton.

What to do in Blue Mountains, NSW

At just over an hour’s drive west from Sydney, the Blue Mountains is a popular day trip destination for Sydney-siders hoping for a glimpse of the mountains and respite from the everyday.

As its name may imply, the region is best known for its soaring mountainous sandstone ridges and enchanting natural beauty, with valleys, rock formations, and craggy cliffs all blanketed by native bushland.

For nature buffs, the World Heritage listed national park has it all: endless vistas, Australian wildlife, and walking trails through lush rainforest with plenty of spectacular waterfalls.

From luxe retreats to cosy weatherboard cottages, like Edwina Bartholomew’s cottage Warramba, take the day off at these Blue Mountains accommodation options where you can rest and recover for another day of exploring.

What to do in Hunter Valley, NSW

The Hunter Valley is a wine region steeped in tangible history, whose roots can be traced back 200 years when it became one of the country’s first commercial wine regions. With numerous c1800s cottages and huts still standing, a quick stroll down the high street is like stepping back in time.

Famous for its production of Semillon and Shiraz, vines in the Hunter were first planted in 1823. But the focus now is on its future.

You could stay in the Hunter for weeks and never visit the same spot twice considering it boasts more than 150 cellar doors, and that’s not including the wealth of restaurants, tasting experiences, spas, trails, national parks, golf courses and art trails.

(Photo: Boydells)

With all these wineries, is there even room for any accommodation? Yes! There are options ranging from cosy log cabins to lovingly restored sandstone cottages, and of course no shortage of vineyard stays.

Just two hours north of Sydney, grab your picnic basket and wine bottle chillers and head just two hours north of Sydney for a weekend on the wines at these beautiful Hunter Valley accommodations.

What to do in Orange, NSW

Sharing its name with a citrus fruit but famously a grape-growing region, the paradoxical town of Orange is an unforgettable country escape.

It was named after the Prince of Orange, with whom the NSW Surveyor General served in the Peninsular War (1808–1814), but these days the chilly town is abuzz with acclaimed wineries, and cellar doors, trendy cafes, and homewares boutiques.

Renowned for its crisp cool climate wines and produce, Steve Cordony’s Rosedale Farm and being the birthplace of Australian poet Banjo Paterson, Orange is well worth the 250km journey west of Sydney for any wine, culture or nature savant.

Orange is also the home of Food of Orange District (FOOD) Week, Australia’s longest-running regional food festival, that showcases farmers, local chefs, cooks, restaurateurs and caterers. It is held annually in April and is a must for food-lovers.

Don’t start packing your bags without first checking out this list of places to stay in Orange!

What to do in Byron Bay

Travel a little further north and you’ll soon find yourself in the coastal town famous for its surf breaks, stunning coastal scenery and hordes of celeb homes

Byron Bay’s idyllic landscape, pristine beaches and laid-back lifestyle have become synonymous with an escape from busy life, and the town boasts some of the country’s most stylish boutique stays.

From its rolling hinterland farm stays to beachfront shacks perched upon unbroken coastline, these are some of Byron’s best boutique accommodation

Dog Friendly Stays in NSW

There is a lot to be said for these stunning road-trip destinations, but it would be remiss of us not to spare a thought for the dedicated pet owners. Treat you and your pup to some well-deserved R&R at these pet-friendly stays in regional NSW.

7 Phillip Island accommodation options that inspire an escape from the city https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/travel/phillip-island-accommodation/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 23:19:50 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=251847 There's a reason Melburnians flock to this country-coastal hamlet.

The post 7 Phillip Island accommodation options that inspire an escape from the city appeared first on Homes To Love.

Although only a 90-minute drive from Melbourne, the beachy and oh-so-beautiful Phillip Island feels miles away. Boasting the best blend of coastal and country, the one-road-in, one-road-out holiday destination is awash with pristine beaches and rolling paddocks, and quite literally crawling with local wildlife.

While Phillip Island plays host to the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, has scored some enviable foodie destinations and wineries, enjoys the glory of the daily Penguin Parade, and is even the site for this year’s season of The Block, for the most part, it’s a quiet destination comprised of charming and scenic hamlets.

Phillip Island accommodation is a category more populated than one might expect. As a hotspot for weekend escapes from Victoria’s bustling CBD, many have invested in regional boltholes, and while they range in character — from snug cottages to mid-century cabins — what they do have in common is their ability to inspire a getaway. Here are 7 of our favourites.

The post 9 aesthetically pleasing Gold Coast accommodation and Airbnb options to book appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
The sun always shines on the Gold Coast, and for those yearning for a beachside break with plenty of glitz and glamour, there’s really no better place to holiday.

Nestled along the gorgeous Queensland coastline, the Goldie promises a laidback lifestyle, crystal clear oceans, a pulsating nightlife, and a variety of top-tier amusement parks. On top of that, some of the most breathtaking natural beauty is never far away. It’s no wonder the Gold Coast is often referred to as ‘Australia’s playground’.

Gold Coast is the perfect holiday destination all year round. Most people love to enjoy the sunny hotspot over the summer. Gold Coast in the summer is very warm (to say the least). It’s also on the slightly more humid side so you can expect hot temperatures with a side of rainfall, too.

Autumn is a great time to visit the Gold Coast, with clear blue skies and a slightly lower temperature (compared to peak summer). So, if you don’t do too well in the heat, we’d recommend booking your Gold Coast holiday between April and June.

With that being said, Winter shouldn’t be ruled out either for the Gold Coast. Between July and September, temperatures are admittedly at their lowest. However, you can rest assured it will still be bright and sunny.

No matter which season you’ve chosen to visit, we’ve rounded up some of the most beautiful Gold Coast accommodation and Airbnb options (and a few from surrounding areas) for your next sun-filled getaway.

If the Kimberley has been calling you, it’s never been a better time to answer the call. Experiencing the Kimberley means immersing yourself in its wilderness, its sounds and landscapes. Touching the earth and water, breathing its pristine air and walking in the footsteps of traditional landowners where their art and stories were born.

Experience the Kimberley in absolute luxury with True North. Offering small group luxury cruises to places others can’t go, True North’s curated itineraries offer gourmet dining, fine wines and unique activities you won’t find anywhere else. It’s where luxury and adventure intersect for the ultimate adventure of a lifetime.

The Ultimate Kimberley adventure

As the name suggests, the Kimberley Ultimate cruise is True North’s signature itinerary, offering two weeks of lavish indulgence, encompassing the Kimberley coast’s icons and more. With an on-board helicopter for elevated experiences, adventure boats for water and land excursions and expert staff to guide every adventure, you won’t miss a thing.

On-board the bespoke vessels TRUE NORTH and TRUE NORTH II, guests revel in a leisurely pace with luxurious accommodation and inclusions such as two heli-picnics, ample time for exploration, fishing, and world-class dining experiences.

Here, we take a closer look at True North’s Kimberley Ultimate adventure and just a few of the ultimate, some would say life-changing, moments you can expect on this adventure of a lifetime.

Welcome aboard.

Arrive in Wyndham via coach transfer from Kununurra. Board the TRUE NORTH at 1700 for cocktails before departing around 1830. Enjoy dinner onboard and an overnight cruise to the King George River.

Day 1: King George River

When the tide is high enough the TRUE NORTH crosses the sandbar into the mouth of the King George River, to reveal a breathtaking view as you journey upstream to the jewel in the crown, the King George Falls.

The ultimate moment: Shower on the bow under a waterfall. Your first life-changing experience is a shower you’ll never forget on the bow of the TRUE NORTH under the majestic King George Falls. The captain will manoeuvre the ship directly under the falls so you can experience the natural beauty of the falls, firsthand.

Day 2: Drysdale River

Explore the Drysdale River, indulge in fishing for succulent local mangrove jack, and savour signature scones and billy tea. Enjoy beachcombing at Kalumburu by helicopter.

Day 3: Eagle Falls

Witness ancient Bradshaw rock art and enjoy a heli-picnic at Eagle Falls. Fishing opportunities abound in Vansittart Bay while exploring local beaches and creeks.

See the “Bradshaws”, ancient rock art that pre-dates other known examples of Indigenous culture, and possibly the oldest known ‘paintings’ of their kind.

The ultimate moment: an Eagle Falls Heli picnic. Board the TRUE NORTH helicopter for a flight over breathtaking scenery for a sumptuous picnic beside a waterfall. Keen anglers can try their hand with Vansittart Bay’s monster mackerel while others explore the local beaches and creeks by adventure boat.

Day 4: Mitchell River

Head upriver to Surveyors Creek for swimming and barramundi fishing. Experience a helicopter flight over Mitchell Falls. Enjoy a glass or two of bubbles and try on exquisite pearl and diamond pieces by local artisan jewellers in the evening.

The ultimate moment: Land a barramundi for dinner on the Mitchell River. The Michell River is famous for its big barra – and even bigger crocs! Keen anglers will love the hunt for these wild fish and for the opportunity to enjoy their catch of the day prepared on-board by the chef, a truly ‘hook to plate’ experience.

Others can head up river to the scenic Surveyors Creek for a refreshing swim – no crocs here. Or take a helicopter flight to see the incredible natural waterways and landscapes of the region.

Day 5: Swift Bay

Hunt for fresh, juicy black-lip oysters and savour them straight from the rock! Explore the extraordinary Wandjina and Bradshaw ancient rock art galleries. End the day with sunset drinks on Winyalkin Island.

Day 6: Roe River

Fish for barramundi in the croc-laden Roe River. Explore Prince Frederick Harbour, visit an art site on aptly named Art Island, and enjoy sunset on the harbour over a cheese board and bubbles.

Day 7: Hunter River

The Hunter is about as remote as it gets in Australia, with a river system lined with dense mangrove forests and surrounded by mountainous rainforests. Hop on an adventure boat for a closer look, hike to Jackson Falls and visit Phillip Parker King’s boab tree or get a bird’s eye view from the helicopter.

The ultimate moment: Sunrise birdwatching with the ship’s naturalist on the remote Hunter River. This morning you’ll experience birdlife as never before, with TRUE NORTH’s resident naturalist to introduce you to the exquisite birdlife unique to the region.

Day 8: Prince Regent River

At the heart of the Kimberley is the mighty Prince Regent’s astounding scenery. Witness the magnificent Kings Cascade from directly underneath the falls with some deft manoeuvring by the captain.

Follow up with a helicopter flight to a gourmet picnic where your chefs have prepared a destination-inspired menu to enjoy beside a crystal-clear billabong in one of the most remote locations on earth. Return to the TRUE NORTH to share stories with fellow travellers over sundown drinks as you anchor for the evening off Camp Creek.

Day 9: Champagne Sunrise

Early risers can enjoy a champagne sunrise atop a mountain. Enjoy your choice of hiking, swimming and helicopter flights to remote rock art sites.

Day 10: Sale River

Explore the extraordinary Sale River and ‘ride the tide’ in adventure boats on a classic river expedition or take the opportunity to ‘land a barra’ at the river’s entrance.

Back on board, enjoy a delicious lunch as you sail to another Kimberley icon, Montgomery Reef, where you’ll witness its unique ecosystem in technicolour as 140 square miles of coral reef rises out of the ocean and water cascades, exposing the reef and a rare insight into another world.

The ultimate moment: Fly over Montgomery reef for spectacular views of coral and sea life.

From turtles to dugong, crocodiles and every sea creature imaginable, Montgomery Reef is home to them all and TRUE NORTH’s helicopter provides a truly unique perspective.

Day 11: Three Ways

Enjoy fishing and a moderate walk to Ruby Falls. Embark on a heli-fishing adventure and conclude with a unique on-board dining experience.

Day 12: Horizontal Falls

Experience the power of the tidal Horizontal Falls with a thrilling tender ride and helicopter flight. Dip your toes in the powder-soft sands of Silica Beach or Whirlpool Pass before a farewell dinner onboard.

Day 13: Transfer to Kununurra

Arrive in Broome and transfer to Kununurra via coach for onward travel arrangements, marking the end of your Kimberley adventure aboard the TRUE NORTH.

This itinerary can be taken from Broome to Kunnunurra and also in reverse. Use of the helicopter will incur additional cost. Speak to True North’s friendly and experienced team for details.

A word from previous travellers

To say the Ultimate Kimberley has to be experienced to be believed would be an understatement. But the accolades from those who have experienced it speak for themselves:

“The Heli camping night (was) the absolute highlight of our trip on Kimberley Ultimate. Alan (the pilot) was so good, great knowledge, excellent camp cook, host and fabulous company! The most beautiful spot up in the top of the Kimberley, and especially the stars in that outback black night. Where else can you step out of the helicopter and jump into a glorious freshwater pool? Or sit around a campfire and then into your luxurious stretcher. Felt like we were in a dream… a truly unforgettable experience.” Anne and Lori

“Never (having) seen the Kimberley Coast before, True North made it possible to access remote passages and fiords of the remote western Australian coastline. The on-board helicopter was a seamless transport to see the Kimberley coast from above.” George Savvides

From the Kimberley Waterfalls to the great coastal regions of Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, experience unspoilt nature in absolute luxury with the multi-awarded True North – experiences that redefine adventure.

Pip Brett of JUMBLED has made boutique accommodation of a former regional bank https://www.homestolove.com.au/home-tours/sona-molong-accommodation/ Sun, 07 Apr 2024 23:03:39 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=250728 Ready to *cheque* in?

The post Pip Brett of JUMBLED has made boutique accommodation of a former regional bank appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
‘Town bank’ and ‘luxury’ are words not usually found in the same sentence. But since multi-faceted creative Pip Brett got her hands on the former CBA and associated banker’s quarters in Molong and created the highly anticipated Sona (a befitting name meaning ‘gold’), we’re willing to wager they will be.

Pip, who is also behind Orange’s fun and fancy-free homewares store, JUMBLED, speaks of a threesome meet-cute reminiscent of the most famous love stories and fairytales. “We fell instantly in love. Nick and I were without our kids for a week. We had this run of lovely dinners spent looking at local real estate over a wine…and then we saw it. We put in an offer the next day and it was accepted,” she says. “I think we may have given our accountant a mild panic attack.”

This was no run-of-the-mill, mall-style bank. A c1930s Spanish-mission lean sees the building, set on one of the town’s main shopping drags, enjoy Solomonic columns, plaster half-shells topping the windows, a parapet with square in-fills, and a curved corner entrance. In the way of bones, Pip and Nick undoubtedly had some good ones to work with — but that is not to say they had it easy.

Sona is a luxury accommodation spanning 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, an expansive kitchen, and indoor and outdoor fireplaces. “It’s the perfect place for cozy nights and golden days,” says Pip. (Photography: Clancy Paine)

When guests throw open the doors to spend a weekend — or week — at Sona, they are met with characterful interiors that play boldly with pattern and texture, luxury finishes and bespoke details. When Pip and her husband, Nick (who, thankfully, is a seasoned builder), did the same at the beginning of 2022, they instead uncovered peeling paint, a giant Chubb safe, some weird and slightly-creepy quirks, and a smattering of mould. But they quickly scraped back a wealth of history and potential. “The floorboards were all original and in perfect condition. Every room had a different pressed tin ceiling pattern. It was so beautifully built and then looked after by the Commonwealth Bank,” says Pip. “Unfortunately there was no hidden stash of money anywhere, though!”

To assist with the project, Pip and Nick brought on architect and high school best friend, Felicity Slattery of Studio Esteta, who was also behind the design of their family home. By converting the main bank into an open-plan kitchen, living, and dining space, the manager’s quarters were left to house the accommodation’s five bedrooms, each with a bespoke bedhead (by local designer Bec Dunkley) upholstered in custom Bonnie and Neil fabric. “It is hard to remember that it used to have an ATM in the dining space and a manager’s office in the living area.”

Now that the dust has both metaphorically — and literally — settled on the mammoth project, Pip is ready to hand the keys to Sona over to a lucky slew of guests, but not before giving it a test run with her family. “Ultimately, I want our guests to have the most exceptional time; that has been at the centre of every building and design decision we made. Luckily we surrounded ourselves with a wealth of clever people who have been able to guide us,” she says. “It is even better than we could have imagined.”

You can book your stay at Sona, Molong, at sona-molong.com.au. The accommodation is $1600 per night, and there is a two-night minimum stay.

“Molong is located in picturesque Central West NSW. Full of heritage charm, it’s the perfect place to breathe in the country air and embrace a slower pace of life.

The perfect stepping stone to some of the region’s best towns, including Mudgee and Dubbo, Molong is located just 25 minutes from Orange. Meander down Bank Street, enjoy the local cafe or pub, and explore the golden days.”

Find out more about Molong here.

Why Molong?

Despite mould-ridden interiors, Pip and Nick were quick to recognise the building’s winning traits, including the gorgeous fan details and barley sugar twist-style columns surrounding the timber-frame windows.

“We wanted to create an artful interior that celebrates the history of the building rather than erases it,” explains Pip. “It is our modern take on a heritage look that is uniquely Australian and Spanish.”

“I love the kitchen,” says Pip. “It has the most beautiful feeling. We transformed the old bank vault into a butler’s pantry where you can whip up your morning coffee.”

Pip knew her intentions for the bank’s old Chubb vault as soon as she laid eyes upon it. Its heavy door has been painted to match the sage green tone of the kitchen cabinetry and inside is a moody deep hue.

Pip and Nick have lovingly restored the brick fireplaces and adorned their mantels with pieces sourced through Pip’s many JUMBLED connections. “It is very handy owning a store sometimes! Each artwork has its own little story.”

A cosy dining nook with a custom wavy timber bench seat provides Sona’s guests with a spot to sit in the sunshine and enjoy meals.

Local interior designer Bec Dunkley, of The Interior Collective, was responsible for crafting the upholstered furniture, including the bedheads, bench seats (like this one, which features a stripey skirt for hidden storage), and curtains.

At once moody and saturated, each bedroom features a unique palette and carefully selected collection of artworks. Pip has made use of Kip & Co‘s cute new rattan lamp collection.

The Bonnie and Neil custom-printed fabric for the bedheads is truly something else. “I am so thrilled with how they turned out,” says Pip. Each room also features an individual pressed tin ceiling design.

“We want our guests to unwind, explore, and make themselves at home in Sona. It’s all about the art of doing nothing.”

The project’s architect was Studio Esteta, studioesteta.com.au and @studioesteta. The builder was Nick Luelf @speedyluelf.

3. The Ship Inn, Stanley

After travelling to the town of Stanley for family holidays away from the hustle and bustle of Hobart, the Houston family decided to move to the country town for good! They quickly made friends and it wasn’t long before they purchased a historic guest house in the area.

They gave it back its original name, The Ship Inn and, with the help of decorator Lynda Gardener, have revamped the interiors extensively.

The Houston family is passionate about sharing the beauty of their town and community with others, and will happily tell you about all of the wonderful things to see and do nearby.

For bookings and information, visit Airbnb.

Located in Falmouth, about 15 minutes’ drive from Beaumaris on the east coast of Tasmania, Whale Song is a renovated beach shack perched right on the easterly reef.

“It’s unique,” says owner Ingrid, “There’s a real sense of being on the edge of the ocean, with Pacific gulls swirling and calling.”

The deck has been extended toward the beach and boasts a fire pit and a sunken outdoor bath. “That’s a special place, and quite private,” says Ingrid, who regularly soaks here under the stars. It’s also the perfect place to watch whales, both southern rights and humpbacks, that regularly pass by.

10. Picnic Island, Coles Bay

Sitting just off the east coast of Tasmania, at Freycinet National Park’s doorstep, you will find Picnic Island, a tiny rugged outcrop that is home to natural and cultural history – and some very sweet fairy penguins.

Owners Clem and Jane used to use the site as a spot to gather with family and friends where they would rough it out and camp under the stars (and Auroris Australis if they were lucky), but since have erected a series of five copper-clad cabins that line the face of the island, as well as a communal kitchen and living area with a hanging fireplace.

Humble in design but fitted with every mod-con one could desire, the couple, who hail from Melbourne, built the Picnic Island cabins in response to the duty they felt to protect the land.

For more information and bookings, visit Airbnb.

11. Kittawa Lodge, Pearshape

Sitting quietly in its ancient landscape, Kittawa Lodge’s timbers blend into the dunes edging King Island’s coast. Your eyes are drawn to the endless views of sea and sky; staying here is the closest you’ll come to inhabiting untouched wilderness. But such effortless immersion into nature doesn’t come easily: owners Aaron Suine and Nick Stead spent three years designing and building the luxurious retreat.

“We wanted to create a feeling of calm, volume and light,” says Aaron. “We want guests to relax and feel at home.”

Their attention to detail sees Merry People gumboots in the foyer, local artwork on the walls, negroni glasses in the well-stocked bar, and a Dyson hairdryer in the bathroom. Gourmet provisions are delivered each day, but if even that’s too much, Aaron will cook a four-course feast for you. Now that’s relaxing…

Also worth a visit…

THE TASMAN

Blending together three very different buildings – a new build, an Art Deco former hospital and 184os heritage building – to create one cohesive, luxurious hotel was a complicated undertaking. But The Tasman in Hobart has been seamlessly executed – in fact, it exceeds expectation. There are ultra-modern suites with floor-toceiling glass to allow breathtaking views across the Derwent. And there are rooms in the Art Deco wing that retain all their original features, which have been incorporated into the rooms, meaning each one is different. Some even have fireplaces – bliss on a chilly Tassie evening. What the rooms all have in common are unique nods to Tasmania, from the bath products to the furnishings. The goal was to ensure guests know they are in Tasmania even if they never step foot outside The Tasman. And with the onsite restaurant Peppina and cocktail bar Mary Mary, staying put wouldn’t be hard to do.

TRIABUNNA BARRACKS

After spending 18 months meticulously restoring the stonework in the 1840s barracks and stables, Triabunna Barracks owner John Samin knew one thing: he didn’t want to be a stonemason. But the results of his toil speak for themselves. Along with his wife Kim, he has created a gorgeous, historic bed and breakfast on Tasmania’s East Coast. A modern extension now joins the two buildings and the three bedrooms can be booked individually, or the entire property can be yours. It’s the perfect base to explore Maria Island.

9 stylish stays in the majestic south coast town of Milton, NSW https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/travel/accommodation-milton-nsw/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 02:58:29 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=250174 It's a small coastal town with serious style credentials.

The post 9 stylish stays in the majestic south coast town of Milton, NSW appeared first on Homes To Love.

The quintessential Australian coastal town usually goes something like this: there are empty beaches where trees reach over the sand, a main street you can meander in a minute or two, small shops selling locally made or grown goods, and a cafe, bar, restaurant — and maybe even a bar if you’re lucky — filled with familiar faces.

Small and sleepy, a visit to one is like exhaling a deep breath of fresh air.

Milton on the NSW South Coast is one of those places. A three-hour drive from Sydney, it’s where soft lapping waves roll into verdant green hills. And while it may be on the smaller, sleepier side, tucked between the neighbouring towns of Nowra and Ulladulla, it certainly isn’t sleepy. In fact, there’s plenty of reasons to visit the regional town.

The main pub, The Milton Hotel, brews its own beers and has a hatted restaurant. Around the corner is Bar Yuki, a funky record-spinning Japanese-style bar, while Delly’s across the road serves up mouth-watering sandwiches that require two hands.

And then there are the town’s serious style credentials. The main street is heaving with clothing and homewares boutiques — Comunete Store, Kindred, and Spaces2538 to name a few — and it seems to have had a knock-on effect on the surrounding accommodation and stays in the area. Here are some we’re saving for later.

The Stables at The Old Schoolhouse Milton

When host Jenny was looking for a place to live in Milton around 2014, she couldn’t believe her luck when she walked past the old 1880s schoolmaster’s house and saw it was for sale. Flick forward to now, and every inch of the property and its accompanying orchard have been lovingly tended to by Jenny’s thoughtful hand. It’s so beautiful that she’s swung open the doors of the converted stables — as well as the loft above her garage — to guests, with the stay quickly becoming one of the favourites in the area.

Why we’re choosing to Stay(z) in Australia when it comes to our holidays https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/travel/best-holiday-house-stayz-21942/ Mon, 25 Mar 2024 07:17:14 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/best-holiday-house-stayz-21942 We’ve compiled a list of the best holiday homes you should book on Stayz.

The post Why we’re choosing to Stay(z) in Australia when it comes to our holidays appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
At the very least, the last few years have taught a lot of us that there are plenty of adventures to be had right here in Australia. Whether you’re craving the cerulean-coloured waters of the Maldives or the history of some of Europe’s most touristed towns, we’re bound to have something that comes close right here in Australia. And there are certainly some incredible holiday homes available to rent on Stayz.

Whether for a while or just a weekend, it’s always worth planning your next holiday, so we’ve written this handy (and inspiring) list of some of the most popular holiday rentals to help you on your way.

“[This] list is packed with incredible places that Aussies love to visit as proved by the individual property’s popularity and reviews,” says Simone Scoppa, Travel Expert for Stayz. “From the Grampians to the Whitsundays, the shortlist reinforces that now is the time to explore our own backyard and take in Australia’s cities, bush and beach.”

Is Stayz better than Airbnb?

Look, we’re not here to play favourites. It all depends on where you’re going and what kind of accomodation you’re looking for, as each platform hosts different holiday homes and stays. It’s also important to look at service and cleaning fees of specific holiday rentals, as sometimes you can find the same accomodation on either platform for slightly cheaper.

In 2022, Stayz launched a marketing campaign advertising that with Stayz, “you always have the whole place to yourself”, but depending on your budget and style of travel, being able to book a room in someone’s house like you can on Airbnb may actually be a good thing. So it’s all relative!

Take a look inside the luxe resort where The White Lotus Season 3 is (reportedly) currently filming https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/travel/where-was-white-lotus-filmed/ Tue, 19 Mar 2024 05:55:25 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=249249 Surrounded by tropical gardens on Koh Samui, the location of White Lotus season 3 is a sun-soaked paradise on the island’s north-western tip.

The post Take a look inside the luxe resort where The White Lotus Season 3 is (reportedly) currently filming appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Following the resounding success of HBO’s wildly popular, award-winning drama series, The White Lotus is rumoured to have finally kicked off filming for season three. And this time, the new batch of entitled travellers are touching down in Thailand, specifically at resorts in Koh Samui, Phuket and Bangkok.

The show is famous for sending their star studded casts to opulent Four Seasons holiday resorts around the globe. The series kicks off at Four Seasons Resort Oahu in Hawaii then jets off for a Euro Summer at The San Domenico Palace in Sicily (also a Four Seasons).

So it comes as no surprise that the series will be sticking to its winning formula, choosing the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui as the backdrop for season three.

With the air date for season 3 still far off — slated for early 2025 at best — we’ll take any and all the snippets of island life while we can.

If you’re dying (too soon?) to take a look at where all sorts of sordid mayhem is set to ensue, read on.

Where will season 3 of The White Lotus be located?

With some pretty damning evidence (hello, fully booked out resort during a certain show’s exact filming schedule…), and the personal account from an executive involved with the show, it’s with some degree of certainty that we can point our virtual fingers towards the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui.

Perched on the lush hillside, the Four Seasons resort’s sea-facing villas and private residences come with panoramic ocean views, private infinity pools, al fresco dining pavilions, a live-in personal residential assistant and chic interiors featuring island inspired local accents, providing the perfect blend of spaciousness, comfort and authenticity.

You’ll spend your days emulating the lavish lives of the cast, exploring pristine sandy beaches bordered by tropical greenery and calm blue seas, or lounging at the infinity pool or on your private deck overlooking the idyllic Gulf of Siam – with every imaginable comfort provided.

Where is The White Lotus season 2 filmed?

If we’ve come to expect anything from our impassioned American travellers, it’s that every destination is sure to be a showstopper. The San Domenico Palace in Taormina, Italy from season 2 does not stray from this description, perched atop a rocky outcrop above the Ionian Sea in a reimagined 14th-century convent.

Tranquillity and peace comes crashing down when the wealthy Americans descend upon the luxury O’ahu resort on the Hawaiian island’s sun soaked western coast.

The Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea is home to 380 guest rooms and suites, 15 acres, three pools, three restaurants, golf courses, a spa, and an art museum, and offers Maui’s largest rooms with no resort fees.

Will Jennifer Coolidge be in The White Lotus season 3?

Short of calling each resort in Koh Samui and asking for Tanya McQuoid personally, there’s no way we could know anything about the possible revival of Jennifer Coolidge’s character – much to our dismay. All we’ll say is that showrunner, Mike White has previously said “I can’t go to Italy without Jennifer.” Will Thailand be any different? We’ll have to wait and see.

A spot for sightseeing, great bakeries, adventure and taking respite from the bright lights and loud sounds of the city, the Blue Mountains has long called visitors from far and wide.

The scenic stretch from Sydney is just over an hour’s drive along the Great Western Highway (though there are certainly more adventurous routes to take), making the temptation to pack up and head there even stronger. But if that’s still not enough to entice, the craggy Mountains also play host to a collection of utterly beautiful accommodation options that are not only absolutely Insta-worthy, but the perfect place to retreat after a day spent exploring (or even hiking through) the surrounding area.

From cosy weatherboard cottages to architectural clifftop masterpieces, these nine Blue Mountains accommodation options will seal the deal for your next holiday.

9 Blue Mountains accommodation options you’ll want to book

Warramba

Luxury Australian farm retreat

Surrounded by the sprawling Capertee Valley, Warramba is the rural bolthole of Channel Seven Sunrise presenter Edwina Bartholomew and Neil Varcoe, who recently sold their Sydney home to move onto another country venture. The three-bedroom sandstone cottage has been given a gentle update; its original charm remains externally, and inside, a subtle mix of neutral tones with natural timber, stone and lots of different textures invites calm.

Key features:

 • 1890s homestead
 • Picture-esque Sandstone cliffs surround this property
 • Sleeps 6 guests
 • 25-minute drive from Historic Rylstone and Wollemi National Park

The Hilltop Cabin at Logan Brae Retreats

Entire cabin in Kanimbla

Made up of four different accommodation options across two sites, Logan Brae started with a 100-year-old apple orchard on Shipley Plateau in the Blue Mountains. Sleeping between one and eight people, the stays on offer are unique and typically ‘Australian’ at their core — think wood burning fireplaces, alfresco baths and cosy leather upholstery — and certainly make the most of the iconic wilderness that surrounds them.

Key features:

 • At the highest point in the Kanimbla Valley
 • Plunge pool and free-standing bathtub
 • In-room spa treatments available

Cloud Parade

Entire home in Leura, Australia

Brought back to life from its uninspired 1980s state, this clifftop holiday home is like no other. Sleeping up to 10 guests, the Airbnb, dubbed Cloud Parade, is architecturally striking and overlooks Mt Solitary and the Three Sisters. Cuddle up by the open wood-burning fire and bring out one of the many board games left for guests.

Key features:

 • 15-minute stroll to Leura mall, and Gordon Falls just down the street
 • Open wood-burning fire

Epitomising the archetypal Blue Mountains holiday, guests can soak in the views from a comfy window seat, cook from a light-filled, view-surrounded galley kitchen and kick back in their chalet-style bedrooms. Named ‘Wondernest’, the home sleeps up to four and is located moments from the village of Blackheath.

Key features:

 • Chalet-style bathrooms
 • Skylights in bedrooms for star-gazing
 • Blue Mountains World Heritage National Park on your doorstep

Little Black Cabin

Cabin in Blackheath, Blue Mountains

Enjoying an outlook over the Megalong Valley and escarpment, this award-winning 120-year-old cottage was salvaged and transformed by Smith Architects into a highly architectural holiday stay. A bay window with panoramic views and an outdoor firepit provide spaces to relax with a drink, while an LG projector, Sonos speaker and custom, built-in bed invite you to stay in and snuggle up.

Falls Rest

A Wentworth Falls hideaway

Armed with 100 per cent 5-star ratings and operated by this year’s top female host, Nicole’s Blue Mountains cabin, Falls Rest, has very much earned its place in our round-up. • Combustion wood fireplace
 • Minutes away from Blue Mountains heritage sites and attractions

Virgin Australia set to welcome pets onto planes for the first time ever https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/travel/virgin-australia-pets-on-flights/ Thu, 07 Mar 2024 06:34:08 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=248241 Did someone say howl-iday?

The post Virgin Australia set to welcome pets onto planes for the first time ever appeared first on Homes To Love.

Time for a holiday? Pack your pug-gage. No, seriously, pack your pug’s luggage, because Virgin Australia has officially announced its plan to be the country’s first airline to allow (small) dogs and cats on board. And it’s set to happen within 12 months.

The news comes in line with the recent call from many to allow our pets in more places: on trains, buses, in pubs and eateries. In countries like America and some European nations, it’s already a commonplace activity — indeed, I recently lined up for a NYC to DFW flight behind a pup in a cool-as, flame-adorned jacket that matched his mum’s (yes, I have photo evidence). In fact, for a time in the USA, even exotic animals (including, famously, a peacock) could be brought on board. So why not us Aussies, too?

flight-attendants-with-dog
Photo: Virgin Australia

“Our love for animals has always been in the Virgin Australia DNA and we are excited at the prospect of taking off with Australia’s first-ever pets in cabin flights,” said Virgin Australia group chief executive Jayne Hrdlicka. “Overwhelmingly, our guests tell us they want to travel with their pets, and we are now on a journey to make that a reality.”

With all that being said, there is, of course, backlash from some, who fear that those with allergies will suffer, or that this will leave flights overly full. However, an overwhelming 85% of Virgin Australia‘s Facebook followers voted in favour of the move back in 2021. A more recent survey indicated that 57% would fly more regularly if the service was a reality.

What are Virgin Australia’s rules about pets on flights?

Before you break out the confetti and have a pawty, there are, of course, some regulations that are expected to go with the new plan, which the Virgin Australia site lists as follows:

 • The service will be limited to small cats and dogs on specific domestic routes.
 • Pets will be restricted to a limited number of designated rows and will not be allowed to roam freely or sit on laps.
 • Pets must also be carried in a Virgin Australia-approved pet carrier under the seat in front of the owner for the duration of the flight.

There will reportedly also be spots for pets to go to the toilet at the airport — phew.

Berry may no longer be the NSW South Coast’s ‘best kept secret’, but it is still simply the best. A precise and beautiful blend of country and coast, where the moos of cattle are met with the salty scent of the ocean and bushland, Berry inspires the desire for a tree change in even the most die-hard city fans among us.

From Sydney, Berry is an easy two-hour amble down the Princes Highway, making it in prime position for a short weekend away. Thankfully, between countless weatherboard cottages, boutique hotels, and retro motels, as well as the town’s foodie and boutique shopping scene, there are plenty of reasons to make the drive.

Striking and charming in equal measure, discover 7 of the best Berry accommodation options that will make you swoon — and book your next trip.

7 Berry accommodation options to book

berry-view-motel

Earthy hues and pops of rusty orange set the tone throughout this refurbished motel at the entrance to Berry. Comprised of 13 original rooms plus an unfolding extension that will encompass an additional 18 rooms, a sun deck and an infinity pool upon completion, this retro-style motel inspires guests to kick off their shoes and relax.

Pure magic is one way to describe the sprawling accommodation that is Bundara Farm. Sleeping up to 20 guests, a stay here unlocks access to several spaces for entertaining and simply soaking up the best that semi-rural life has to offer. Also on site are a menagerie of friendly animals, including mini horses and cattle.

belair-berry

This mid-century pad is all kinds of groovy. Located mid-way down Queen Street (and practically opposite the famous Berry Donut Van), Belairberry, which sleeps up to 14, is in prime position. Beyond the spiral staircase and circular windows at the property’s rear is an 11-metre pool.

white-country-home

Along the winding, bushy Kangaroo Valley Road, The White House sits nestled back from the roadside, separated by its expansive front lawn and crunchy gravel driveway. The home sleeps seven and is kitted out as such, with a large dining area and eat-in kitchen, and an acre’s worth of land.

cottage-accommodation-berry

This historic 1880s weatherboard boasts classic Berry charm by the bucketload. Although it is quaint and cute, it actually sleeps up to 10 people across four bedrooms, has two indoor dining areas, an alfresco zone, and a spa.

We can’t talk about Berry without touching on Neale Whitaker’s residency there. His gorgeous country cottage has graced the pages of magazines, as has the attached guest house, Taylors of Berry, which can be rented for holidays and stays.

bangalay-villas

While not strictly in Berry, nearby Shoalhaven Heads’ Bangalay Luxury Villas deserve a special mention. Set back just 500 metres from Seven Mile Beach, this leafy stay is just a little bit special. In-house activities such as yoga and exercise classes, massages and picnic hampers can be added on by guests, who are also invited to enjoy some seriously memorable meals at Bangalay Dining.

Life slows down at this antique-laden holiday home on the coast https://www.homestolove.com.au/home-tours/lottes-hjem-accommodation/ Mon, 04 Mar 2024 01:15:47 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=247682 A sweet cottage offers a cosy base from which to explore the NSW Sapphire Coast.

Miranda Balodis and her husband Harrison came to own Lotte’s Hjem through somewhat serendipitous circumstances. “Harrison house-sat for Lotte Erikson, who then owned the cottage, back in 2013,” explains Miranda. “He fell in love with the house and joked that if she ever wanted to sell, she could sell it to him. Fast forward to 2016 and Harrison got that phone call.”

A public servant in her nine-to-five, Miranda also has a passion for interior design, while Harrison works in film and TV (starting out on River Cottage Australia), so the 150-year-old abode is in safe hands. They named it Lotte’s Hjem after the former owner, paired with the Norwegian word for home. “We fell in love with the overall feel that Lotte had created at the house, and we wanted to make sure this lived on,” says Miranda.

The couple have made minimal changes to the three-bedroom and one-bathroom cottage, set in Pambula on the NSW Sapphire Coast. “We replaced the exterior weatherboards and gave the house a paint job,” says Miranda. They also renovated the kitchen and bathroom. “We wanted to make sure we built a kitchen that inspired people to cook – and they do!” says Miranda. “It’s full of collected pieces we found at op shops and antique stores. I think that gets people excited.”

A pleasant place to sit first thing in the morning was also an inspired addition. “I love seeing people use the window and concrete breakfast bar in the courtyard, just as we had intended,” says Miranda.

“We had dreams that we would renovate and make this cottage what it is today, so we do pinch ourselves often.”

A rambling arch and rustic gate lead the way. (Photography: Abbie Melle)

No matter who comes to stay and what stage of life they’re at (an engagement took place recently), there’s a common theme: “People wanting to slow down, find rest and rejuvenate,” says Miranda. “They pour cups of tea and pick up a book they would never ordinarily have time for. They explore the beaches and have swims in remote places. They pick herbs from the garden to add to their scrambled eggs. They wake slowly and watch the sunrise.”

country-bedroom
Morning lie-ins are encouraged at Lotte’s. (Photography: Abbie Melle)

There are some excellent bushwalks nearby, including the Wharf to Wharf Walk and Light to Light Walk, and pretty much any trail in the area’s national parks. A new bike track has also recently opened in Eden, so there’s plenty to inspire you to move. In the warmer months, do as the locals do. “We love Sunny’s Kiosk, perched right on the shores of Merimbula Lake (a perfect place to try local produce), and of course a morning coffee at Mitchies Jetty is just spectacular after a swim,” Miranda shares.

This neck of the woods is equally idyllic in winter, with walks at the Panboola Wetlands and burgers at Dulcie’s Cottage both must-dos, before retiring for a hot chocolate and soak in the tub, with its casement windows that open to the garden. “We love our antique zinc bath that was imported from Belgium,” says Miranda. “We’re inspired by a typically European style, mainly French and Italian, so we’re always looking for pieces that add to this feel.”

cheese-board
Sample local cheese and wines during your stay. (Photography: Abbie Melle)

It really does feel like a world away when visiting Lotte’s Hjem and you can sense the love poured into it by the pair. “We were just 21 and 22 when this old cottage came into our hands (we are now 28 and 29),” says Miranda. “We had dreams that one day we would renovate and make this cottage what it is today, so we do pinch ourselves often.”

The post You can stay at photographer Kara Rosenlund’s North Stradbroke Island weekender appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
With a full heart I’m writing this to you from North Stradbroke Island, a sand island in Queensland’s Moreton Bay. The local Quandamooka people call it Minjerribah, which means ‘island in the sun’. It’s just turned spring, though it always feels like summer over here.

People like to keep Stradbroke Island a secret. It’s a haven — for people and nature. Being here feels wild.

People say the island feels this way because a planned bridge was never built to connect it to the mainland. Being isolated only attracts a ‘certain type of person’, the type who doesn’t see travelling over water as a barrier, and who yearns for simplicity. The seclusion has kept the island safe from change.

Inspired by Kara’s love letter to her Stradbroke Island home? Since buying and renovating the property in 2018, she has decided to open the doors and share it with the rest of us. To experience the magic of this three-bedroom ’70s escape, book a stay via Airbnb.

BOOK A STAY

The living room is filled with secondhand items.

Treasured objects on display in the entry area.

My husband and I bought a weekender here about 18 months ago. An original 1970s timber A-frame, which we are slowly doing up. We fell in love with the house the moment we first saw it. Lots of natural light and glass, with knotty pine shiplap walls.

Starting Friday nights, we abandon city life and head for the ferry. I’m usually cutting it very fine timewise, dashing to catch it and running with baskets and weekend bags madly slung over my shoulders, with whatever precious find I have made for the house that week in my arms.

Once onboard, I head straight out the back to my favourite spot. There are lots of seats inside, but there are six magical faded plastic chairs on the open deck, drilled into the floor and this is where I sit. For an old ferry it goes fast, quickly gaining speed over the bay. Within this moment onboard I feel completely free, watching the mainland disappear in the distance, as the churned water trails behind.

Pandanus fruit is used for decoration.

Our life before the island was very different. Instead of catching ferries, we would be catching planes, going all over the country and all over the world for work. Always in different directions. We were worried — how long could we keep going in such disparate ways from each other? I would think often about an Esther Perel quote: ‘The quality of our relationships determines the quality of our lives.’

Something needed to shift and it did when we found this island. Embracing this new life was very easy. I began to see the weekends differently. As two special days which needed to be protected from other days of the week. Sacred time.

The house is filled with works by Kara, including the print of trees on the living room wall.

Shells inspired the colour palette used in the house.

When I started to think like this, simple things began to reveal themselves to me — or maybe I had the time to let them in. It started one Saturday afternoon, seeing shadows dancing on the wall of the back bedroom. The shadows were cast by a palm tree outside the window. The fronds gently swayed in the breeze. The shadows looked like a slideshow; the warm sunlight projecting on the pine walls.

In that visual flicker of insignificance, I was reminded of the weekends I grew up knowing — weekends of simplicity.

The grasscloth wallpaper blends seamlessly with the custom bedhead.

The Australia-shaped shell mirror in the outdoor shower was a gift.

I would bring all the week’s dirty washing over to the island with me — the washing has a way of catching up with you wherever you live. First thing on Saturday morning I would put a load of washing on. We don’t have a tumble dryer at the house, instead I use the weathered old timber clothesline in the backyard — which is half falling apart. I would peg the washing out, gingerly adding more and more layers to the shaky line.

I found myself looking forward to this morning activity with an unusual level of excitement and wonder. I would be precariously pegging the white sheets on the rickety line, while getting slightly tangled up in a cocoon of wet white linen, trying hard not to let them touch the ground.

Being in the moment and seeing the beauty of sunshine and shadows on the clothesline would bring me such joy. I decided to start documenting the simplicity of these ordinary days — photographing my everyday life on the weekends as something to remember them by.

The 1970s weekender of photographer Kara Rosenlund and her husband Timothy O’Brien.

I had always longed to photograph the sea, to capture the freedom of being underwater. How the waves crash against your body, invigorating the skin and mind. I wanted to share the simple pleasure of rearranging objects at home and how satisfying it can be to bring together a collection of things you absolutely love.

When you allow time for the ordinary moments, they have a way of becoming so much more.
