We’ve all seen that meme, the one that says: “I get more cleaning done in the ten minutes before someone comes over than I do in a week.” We’ve read it, chuckled, tagged a friend and probably moved straight on with our cluttered, busy lives.

But there are plenty of people out there who never panic at the thought of a visitor, and whose homes just seem to, dare we say it, stay clean without effort. We all know someone like this, whose house seems to exist in a permanent state of spotlessness, even when you happen to drop in on them unexpectedly.

So how do they do it? Turns out, keeping a clean house doesn’t require as much effort as you might think. We spoke to a bunch of cleaning and home organisational experts to find out what they do every day to keep their house in tip top shape.

Overwhelmingly, it appears that their secret is to do a little bit each day and to develop habits that keep their homes clutter free without thinking twice. In the process, they exert less energy than those of us who resort to binge clean-ups. Here are 15 things people with tidy homes do every day.

A home that is tidy and clutter-free is both welcoming and calming. (Photography: Louise Roche / Stylist: Kylie Jackes / Home Beautiful)

1. They’re constantly offloading clutter

“Clutter is like a magnet, clutter attracts clutter,” say Amy Revell and Kirsty Farrugia, hosts of The Art of Decluttering podcast, and founder of the professional home organisation service of the same name.

“A home that has less stuff is so much easier to keep tidy,” say Amy and Kirsty. “Each day consider what items you no longer need that could leave your home.”

There are plenty decluttering methods out there – from the quasi-spiritual KonMari method to the everyday, practical approach taken by Amy and Kirsty. Listen to their podcast on Acast to discover solutions to real-world sources of clutter including sentimental papers, sports equipment, Tupperware and more.

To eliminate needless clutter building up around your home, regularly ask yourself: what can I donate, recycle or sell to make life easier? (Photography: Armelle Habib / Stylist: Heather Nette King / Inside Out)

How to declutter your home quickly:

2. They don’t shove things into a junk drawer or junk room

So you’ve done a quick clean up, only to blink your eyes and find that your home is again in a state of ruin. Jo Carmichael, professional organiser and founder of All Sorted Out says hurried, ad hoc tidy-ups just don’t work.

“What often happens with the ‘fast clean’ scenario is that the items strewn around on furniture and the floor are simply shoved into a wardrobe or drawer,” she says. “It quickly tumbles back into an unrecognisable pile of clutter once the family returns home and starts living.”

3. They store ‘like with like’

The solution is to seek out spaces where clutter hides and start storing like with like.

“Keeping like with like,” says Jo, “means it’s easier to put things away and find them, because t-shirts are together – not mixed up with jeans or socks.”

This will allow you to get ready quicker, and put your hands on the item you need without having to look twice.

How to declutter your storage spaces:

4. They keep things in their place

“Make a place for everything,” says Jo. “It’s an age-old saying, but a worthwhile habit to start making your own.”

Jo recommends giving each one of your possessions a dedicated space in the home. If you’re not using something, “don’t put it down, put it away! Aim to put things back after use, every time and every day.”

If you master this habit, Jo says “You’ll be able to find what you need, leave on time, arrive at work or an appointment on time without search missions for lost documents, wallets or keys.”

5. They do it now

“Stopping procrastination is the key to keeping your house tidy,” say Amy and Kirsty.

“Open the mail when it comes in; answer party invites as soon as you get them; sign school notes when they are taken out of school bags and get your kids to put them straight back in their bags to hand in.”

“Don’t walk past something that belongs in another room without putting it away in its home,” say Amy and Kirsty. (Photography: Dave Wheeler / Australian House & Garden)

6. They follow the ‘only touch things once’ rule

“Have you noticed in your bedroom that all it takes is one item of clothing to be thrown on the floor next to your bed and before you know it you’ve got a floordrobe?” ask Amy and Kirsty, who say the remedy is to ‘only touch things once.’

“If you get into the habit of putting things away the first time you touch them, you’ll find it easy to maintain a tidy home,” say Amy and Kirsty.

This could also mean taking things ‘one step at a time.’ In the morning resist the urge to pull out the hair-straightener if your makeup is still strewn all over the counter.

As soon as you finish with one item, put it back into its dedicated place and then move on to the next step.

7. They tidy up before bed

“When you tidy up your house before bed it makes you feel that you are on top of things,” says Enjo founder, Barb de Corti.

In the kitchen, that could mean stacking the dishwasher, sweeping the floor and wiping down benchtops. In the bedroom, it could mean hanging up jackets, robes and putting away shoes.

Every little bit helps and will allow you to start the new day feeling fresh and accomplished. “I love waking up to a clean home,” says Barb.

Keep those good feelings flowing by making your bed as soon as you wake up.

8. They are mindful about what they buy

Home organisation expert and Oprah’s decluttering guru, Peter Walsh, says the key to a tidy home is to limit the things you bring into it. This can be particularly challenging in a world driven by consumerism and where sales are constantly happening.

“We’re made to believe that if we buy the right thing, we’ll be closer to the elusive ‘happiness’ we seek,” says Peter. “[But] I always tell clients – if the price is the best thing about an item, don’t buy it. Ever!”

Be mindful about the items you bring into your home: do you really need it? Are you prepared to dust it regularly?

If you find that you are a bit of a shopaholic, Peter recommends “Think about the hobbies you’ve always wanted to take up and enrich your life that way, rather than accumulating more stuff.”

In a world that is obsessed with shopping, it is all too easy to fill your home with unnecessary objects. Ask yourself whether you really need an item before you buy it. (Photography: Jem Cresswell)

9. They clean as they cook

Cooking dinner after a long day at work is hard enough without having to trawl through dirty dishes left over from yesterday.

Sophie Kovic, founder of eco-friendly, plastic-free food container company Seed & Sprout says “Having a chaotic kitchen can set a chaotic tone for the day, which is why I prioritise cleaning up before I walk out the door and start work for the day.”

Another tip she swears by is to clean her kitchen while she cooks by “wiping down surfaces after each use and putting everything away in its place.”

10. They organise their pantry

In modern households, a perfectly organised pantry is almost expected. Gone are the days of half-open packets of rice sealed up with a twist tie, these days glass jars with custom labels and lazy Susans loaded with an array of condiments are the norm.

Sophie says creating an organised pantry is an achievable goal to have that can help you reduce food waste.

Stock up on glass jars before you begin organising your pantry. (Photography: Maree Homer)

As for her secret ingredient? “Jars, jars, jars! Thrift as many jars as you can in all different shapes and sizes for your food requirements.”

She recommends keeping an eye out for stackable jars like Seed & Sprout Co’s pantry jars that will help to utilise all available pantry space. “Jars are a great way to keep food fresh and you’ll also be able to see what is inside without labels.”

How to organise your pantry

11. They wipe down the shower

“My top tip for a sparkling clean shower. is to keep your bathroom as dry as possible,” says Barb.

“Use a blade to remove moisture from shower screens and a super absorbent cloth like the Enjo Bathroom Miracle to keep surfaces clean and dry.”

Likewise, it’s a good idea to wipe down the bathroom sink each day to eliminate the possibility of stains, odours and mould growth. Keep a stack of microfibre cloths handy inside your bathroom vanity to use exactly for this purpose.

12. They have a system for their laundry

If your wardrobe looks more like a ‘floordrobe’, it’s time to rethink your laundry system.

“When you undress for the night, put dirty clothes in a dirty clothes basket or back into the wardrobe, rather than leaving on the floor or draped on a chair.”

If you need to, put the laundry basket for soiled clothing in the place that you are most likely to use it, such as the bathroom or bedroom, for example, rather than the laundry.

Create a system for your laundry that you can stick to. (Photography: Lisa Cohen / Styling: Beck Simon / Design: Norsu Home)

13. They ‘finish the cycle’

“Think about the term ‘finishing the cycle’; you’re not finished with the laundry if you leave wet clothes in the machine,” says Peter. “To finish, you have to wash, dry, fold and put away your clothes.”

Jo concurs, and recommends “Taking the washing off the line as soon as possible and put it away instead of letting the washing sit around.”

“Think more broadly about all the steps of your tasks, see them through to the end and you’ll begin to create a more orderly space around you,” Peter adds.

Put laundry away as soon as it is dry, advises professional organiser Jo Carmichael. (Photography: Armelle Habib)

14. They share the load

Keeping a tidy home shouldn’t be the responsibility of just one person. Everyone contributes to mess, and everyone should share the load of household chores.

Enlist help by creating a household chores roster, or delegating tasks to the kids or to your partner. Sydney-based psychologist says “So much of chore completion is about efficiency and effectiveness, and it’s easy to get caught up in folding socks the ‘right’ way rather than focusing on the principle being taught — whether to partners or children,” says Brewer.

Teach kids to put toys away as they play to help keep clutter to a minimum. (Photography: Maree Homer)

If everyone in the house is time poor, consider hiring outside help in the form of a professional cleaner and outsourcing tasks such as ironing, window cleaning, lawn-mowing and more.

Alternatively, seek out smart home products such as a robot vacuum, an automatic window cleaner or even a robotic lawn mower to do some of the dirty work around the house for you!

15. They are realistic when ‘life happens’

“Sometimes your day will go pear shaped so it’s important to show grace when this happens,” say Amy and Kirsty.

Life is all about juggling different priorities, and it is normal that a house will become untidy at times.

Sometimes, life just happens and that’s ok, say the experts. (Photography: Tommaso Riva)

“Relax,” says Barb. “If you have children, it is more important to have a clean home than a tidy one.”

“I commonly clean as I go to ensure that I don’t have to spend my spare time cleaning all the time,” says Barb. “I prefer to spend my extra time with the family and my gorgeous twin grandchildren!”

We’re a carefree nation who love going barefoot, but crumbs and splatters common in any typical house can make that a little less than comfortable at times. For the never-ending battle between food staying on our plates and it beelining for the floor, Dyson has equipped us with the necessary gear to protect our sanity and the sanctity of our bare toes, the Dyson WashG1.

Now you may be thinking, how common is it really that my cereal faces off with gravity or my toast is landing buttered-side-down? But until you come face to face with a puzzling puddle of dry and wet debris and a bus on its way, cranky toddler, or in-laws knocking, you’ll understand the pain.

Drop the mop, holster the stick vac and instead reach for the new Dyson WashG1™, Dyson’s first dedicated wet floor cleaner.

Dyson’s new dedicated wet cleaner

Dyson unveiled its latest floorcare technology this week, designed to simultaneously pick up both wet and dry debris from hard floors to deliver a fuss-free and hygienic clean. Gone are the days of the arduous two stage vacuum-then-mop process, the Dyson WashG1 uses a combination of hydration, absorption, and extraction technologies along with counter-rotating rollers to agitate, remove and separate dry and wet spills.

Three levels of hydration, plus a boost mode, allow you to select the level of clean you need depending on the spill. The unit then runs a 2 minute self-cleaner cycle to ensure it is fresh and sparkling clean for the next use.

Won’t the debris clog up the internals, you ask? Don’t worry, Dyson has thought of that too. Secondary nylon-bristled inner brush bars work to remove dirt and debris from the microfibre rollers, flicking it straight into a removable debris tray, which you can then empty directly into the bin.

Although it is a heavy unit, you’ll find it is surprisingly manoeuvrable. It can effortlessly glide across hard floors, into corners and access hard to reach spaces.

Not only a time-saver, the WashG1 is also a hygienic replacement for the typical bucket and mop. When a typical mop head is returned to the bucket for a rinse, the bucket becomes a reservoir for the germs you’ve just wiped up, so you’re effectively spreading dirt around each room.

The WashG1 on the other hand, allows you to wash exclusively with clean water from start to finish; its one litre water tank can cover 290sqm before it needs refilling. The dirty water is stored in a separate compartment to ensure a hygienic clean, and can be easily tipped down the drain.

Microbiologist and former academic, Dr. Cameron Jones (PhD) says that with the WashG1’s advanced technologies, “homeowners can dramatically cut down on the potential spread of infectious agents and allergens that are often carried in by shoes.”

“This device uniquely combines the thoroughness of mopping with the precision of vacuuming, tackling the microbial and particulate threats that thrive on our floors—from bacteria and viruses to fungi and allergens,” he adds.

How is the WashG1 different to the V15s Detect Submarine?

Unlike the V15s Detect Submarine, a multifunctional vacuum cleaner that works on carpet, upholstery and hard floors with an additional wet roller head attachment for spills and stains, the WashG1 is Dyson’s first dedicated wet floor cleaner with a greater capacity water tank to cover larger areas and boost mode for a deeper clean.

Where to buy the Dyson WashG1

The Dyson WashG1 is available to purchase from the Dyson website and The Good Guys for $999. When purchased directly from Dyson, customers will receive an additional set of rollers with every unit.

Not all mould is bad – after all, it helps convert grapes to wine, milk curd to blue cheese and has even contributed to medical breakthroughs like penicillin. But that’s very cold comfort when this living organism invades clothes, ruins timber and starts causing allergies and flu-like symptoms. Just goes to show how important effective mould removal really is!

Professor Dee Carter, a microbiologist and fungi expert at the University of Sydney, says one of the biggest misconceptions about mould is that its effects are often underestimated. “Any visible mould is a potential problem,” she warns. “If you can smell mould it’s at a level that might be hazardous, so look for it and clean it up if you can.”

So, to avoid mould becoming a problem in your home, here are some expert tips on how to tackle mildew and mould removal, plus some ideas for prevention.

Mould and mildew not only affect houses by causing unsightly stains and a musty smell – they can affect people too. “Mould becomes a problem when it grows to levels that start to release spores or volatile chemicals,” says Dee. “These are what provoke allergies and immune-related illnesses.”

Mould can grow on almost any surface at any time of the year and it’s hard to destroy. It usually shows as black, brown or green spots, and these microscopic fungi can thrive in any damp, warm or humid environment. While mildew is technically a species of mould – you can’t miss its strong odour! – it grows most commonly as a fuzzy white build-up in the bathroom but can occur anywhere, at any time in poorly ventilated homes prone to dampness.

According to Penny Tralau of Mould Rescue, a professional mould removal service, says “Prevention is key. The first thing to look for is moisture.”

What is mould?

“[Mould is] a type of fungus that grows as a fuzzy mass,” says Dee. “There are thousands of different mould species.”

“In the fridge, they will see moulds that like cool temperatures – Penicillium is a classic example. In wardrobes, they will see moulds that like damp and dark conditions – often this is Aspergillus. Other moulds like to grow on fruit and bread. Certain black moulds grow in bathrooms, in dishwashers and on water-damaged goods,” says Dee.

Avoid overfilling your wardrobe to enable the free flow of air. Mould also likes dark spaces, so it’s a good idea to position the wardrobe near sunlight, if possible. (Photography: Maree Homer)

Why is it important to treat mould?

“Mould can be dangerous if it builds up to high levels,” says Dee. “People vary in their sensitivity to it, but for some people mould will induce allergies, cold or flu-like symptoms [and] general malaise.”

“Mould can be more hazardous for babies and young children so make sure their rooms are dry and mould-free.”

How to prevent mould

The key to preventing mould is to reduce moisture and increase ventilation, “If the house is dry and well-ventilated, mould won’t grow,” says Dee.

According to Penny, “the first job is to have a maintenance check and fix any leaky pipes, dripping taps, roof leaks or foundation cracks.”

Dee agrees and recommends, in the event of a water leak, that “Any water-damaged material should be dried out. If mould has already started to grow to an appreciable level, it should be discarded.”

For tips on how to increase ventilation, deal with damp and reduce indoor air pollution, try:

Mould is often associated with wet rooms like the bathroom, but it can pop up in any room at any time of the year. Front doors and windowsills should be cleaned regularly as they are exposed to the elements and attract dirt and condensation. (Photography: Eve Wilson)

Places you should check for mould

The right conditions need to be present for mould to grow and excess or trapped water acts like a petri dish for mould. “Check for condensation in bathrooms, laundries and kitchens, taking careful note of windows, areas around appliances, toilet tanks and plumbing fixtures,” says Penny.

Also investigate any standing exterior water. Black or dark green mottling on surfaces is a sure sign that mould is present.

  • Walls and ceilings – If you’ve noticed condensation, or moisture forming on your walls, regularly check behind furniture such as sofas or beds to make sure no mould has settled in. If you suspect there might be mould growing on your walls, call in an expert for help.
  • Air-conditioners and heating ducts – Air-conditioners and heating ducts can also harbour mould. If any moisture appears near a vent or there’s a mouldy smell, hire a specialist. And during warm, dry summer days, give your house a good airing.
  • Bathroom – In the bathroom, there are some quick daily habits that will help to prevent the build-up of mould and mildew. Make sure all surfaces are free of dirt, grease, and body oil, and spread towels so they can dry completely. “A heated towel rail means you won’t have any soggy wet towels in the room,” says Penny. “Also, a dehumidifier in the problematic months of the year will help keep the environment dry.”

freestanding-bathtub

Daily habits such as drying down walls and hanging towels up between uses will help prevent mould in your bathroom. (Photography: Lean Timms)

  • Kitchen: To prevent mould in the kitchen, always use an exhaust fan when cooking and be sure to dry down the sink and dish rack after use. If you have a dishwasher, ensure the filter is cleaned regularly and that the door is left ajar between loads. Every 2-3 months, it’s a good idea to fill a baking tray with 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water, place it on the top rack of the dishwasher, and run a hot cycle. This will help kill mould spores and deodorise the appliance. Regularly wipe down dishwasher seals with a vinegar and water solution.
  • Fridge – Moulds that love cold environments can crop up in the fridge. Prevent growth from occurring by disposing of food once it’s past its use-by date and by regularly cleaning the fridge.

Using a range hood exhaust fan while cooking will prevent moisture and mould building up in your kitchen.

(Photography: Maree Homer)
  • Wardrobe: Over-filled, poorly ventilated wardrobes can also be a haven for mould growth. Prevent mould by culling the items in your wardrobe, storing only completely dry clothing and by regularly checking items that are rarely worn. Dehumidifiers and moisture-absorbing sachets may also be helpful.
  • Laundry: Like the bathroom, mould often plagues laundries. Use an exhaust fan while running the dryer and be sure to wipe down your washing machine after each load. Mould could also be lurking on the wall behind the washing machine and dryer, or even in the soap dispenser cavity. If you have a front loader, it is a good idea to leave both the door and soap compartment ajar after use, which will allow the machine to dry.

Your laundry may appear clean, but mould could be lurking in unseen places behind appliances and around washing machine door seals. When drying clothing indoors or running the clothes dryer, always turn the exhaust fan on. (Photography: Maree Homer)

What is the best method to remove mould?

For many, the first line of defence when it comes to mould, is bleach. But recently, with awareness growing around natural bathroom cleaning solutions and reducing indoor air pollution, vinegar is becoming more widely recommended.

How to get rid of mould with vinegar

Vinegar may be the product of choice for eco-friendly cleaning gurus, but is it actually effective?

According to Dee, yes it is, and you should believe the hype. “Vinegar will kill mould on contact and penetrate into material to kill it.” That means vinegar kills both the visible mould on a surface – whether it be a piece of clothing, bathroom grout, or a wall – as well as the mould beneath the surface.

Professor Dee Carter, a microbiologist and fungus expert at The University of Sydney says vinegar kills mould on contact. (Photography: John Paul Urizar)

Tea tree, eucalyptus and clove essential oils are all effective at removing and killing mould spores.

Essential oils that remove mould

If vinegar’s ability to kill mould on contact isn’t convincing enough, there are a few other key factors that rule in its favour. “Vinegar is better than most products [on the market] as these break down over time and may have lost a lot of their effectiveness before you even buy them,” says Dee. “Vinegar won’t stain most surfaces and, as it is food, it’s safe to use in kitchens. It is much better and easier to use than oils. It’s also much cheaper,” she adds.

Remember, the biggest mistake is just wiping the mould away. “Spotting mould is an early warning sign of a moisture problem inside the walls or ceilings,” says Penny. Finding and stopping the water source is the only way to prevent future problems or if you’re not confident, bring in a mould specialist.

For more ideas and cleaning recipes that include white vinegar, try:

How to use vinegar to clean

What to do if you find mould

If you find mould in your home, before whipping out the cleaning products and going to town, make sure you’re protected.

“It is advisable to wear gloves and a mask when decontaminating mouldy areas. If there is a lot of it, then a professional service should be used,” says Dee.

  • Soft surfaces – If you’ve found mildew on your clothes, throw them in the washing machine, and add white vinegar to the rinse cycle. Wash on the hottest setting suitable for the clothing and allow to air-dry.
  • Hard surfaces – To clean mouldy tiles, grout or shower silicone in the bathroom, Dee recommends mixing 1 part vinegar to 20 parts water in a spray bottle. Spray the area and leave it on the affected area for 10-20 minutes. “Some moulds may damage and stain the surface so they may not look clean, but hopefully the mould will be dead,” she says.

If the bathroom or kitchen wall is sound but the mould stains still won’t go away, it’s time for the big guns – regrouting. It involves scraping out the caulk and stained grout, the applying an antimicrobial treatment before regrouting. But be prepared – this is definitely a job for a professional.

According to Choice, if mould covers a large area of your home (about 1 metre square) and someone who lives in the home is asthmatic, it’s a good idea to call in a mould removal specialist.

How to clean and care for silver https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/how-to-clean-silver-9181/ Tue, 21 May 2024 06:57:07 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/how-to-clean-silver-9181 Bring back the sparkle in your treasured silverware and silver jewellery.

The post How to clean and care for silver appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Have you been putting off using your silverware because you know it needs a good clean? Cleaning silver is actually not as hard and time-consuming as you may think, nor does it require headache-inducing polishing products. With just a few household items and some expert tips to guide you, you’ll find cleaning your silverware can be quite a pain-free and, dare we say, enjoyable task. Just take a look at the many ultra-satisfying before and after videos on Instagram and TikTok and we’re certain you’ll be convinced.

From causes of the dreaded tarnish to easy at-home cleaning tips, here’s everything you need to know about cleaning and caring for your treasured silver items.

What causes silver to tarnish?

Silver’s biggest enemy is sulphur. This is what creates a thin layer of corrosion on your lovely silverware and silver jewellery, creating a darkened and discoloured look.

Despite being a dinner party essential, salt, acids such as those in lemons and vinegar, and the sulphur in eggs and mayonnaise can all damage silverware if left unwashed for a prolonged period of time. That’s why both silver and stainless steel knife blades and cutlery will benefit from being rinsed and cleaned immediately after each use (thank you, dishwashers) and then stored in a cool and dry place.

Another thing to note is to avoid using rubber bands when you wrap silver for storage, even over a layer of tissue or plastic, because they contain the evil aforementioned sulphur that can tarnish the metal.

How to clean silver

Fortunately for those of us with a penchant for silver jewellery and silverware, you likely have all that you need to get your silver back to sparkling in your very own kitchen cupboard. Namely, soap, a cloth (we recommend a good microfibre cloth), bi-carb soda (or baking soda for our American readers), vinegar, aluminium foil and water.

While there are a number of at-home silver cleaning methods, including those that involve using an array of condiments like lemon juice, olive oil, salt and even tomato sauce, the two main methods involve soap or bi-carb. What’s great about both of these simple and effective methods is that they don’t require a specific silver polish, the kind that mildly fumigates you, nor do they demand heavy scrubbing or pose a risk of abrasion to your prized pieces. Here’s what you need to know about these super easy and efficient tarnish-removing methods:

Cleaning silver with soap

An easy and gentle way to clean up sterling and silver-plated silver, including your fine silver, is by washing your items with mild soap and warm water. Simply:

  1. Apply a couple of drops of mild soap to a bowl of warm water.
  2. Soak your silver pieces for around 10 minutes (go into any nooks and crannies with a toothbrush if your silver needs a deep clean).
  3. Once washed, buff up your pieces with a dry cloth (a microfibre cloth works best). It’s important to buff silver straight after washing to prevent water spots which can mar the finish.

Cleaning silver with bi-carb and aluminium foil

Easily one of the most satisfying ways to clean silver is by using the aluminium foil and bi-carb method. Although please note: while this method is great at transforming tarnished silver into sparkling new, it’s not gemstone-friendly.

  1. Find an appropriately sized heatproof bowl (or a saucepan if you have larger items) and line it with aluminium foil, enough to create a lid on top. Apply it shiny side up.
  2. Add in your silver items along with a couple of tablespoons of bi-carb. If you have multiple silver pieces, make sure they have enough space and aren’t touching each other.
  3. Boil enough water to submerge your silverware and then carefully pour it into the bowl or saucepan.
  4. Allow your pieces to soak for up to 30 minutes.
  5. Remove with tongs and allow your items to cool before drying with a soft cloth.

Can you put silverware in the dishwasher?

Yes, the trusty dishwasher can safely and efficiently clean your silverware, even your antique silverware. Just make sure to rinse everything straight after use and separate your metals in the dishwasher as silver can react when in contact with brass, copper, and stainless steel.

You stand to learn a lot when you enter adulthood. That you can have “just because” cake, that lights don’t need to be on all the time (Dad was right!), that 9:00pm is actually a perfectly acceptable bed time, and that life is just a series of mini-breaks between cleaning tasks. Peaks and troughs.

Thankfully, there is an ever-growing plethora of clever devices, appliances and gadgets designed to make our lives a little less perpetually-vacuuming-mopping-and-wiping, and a little more doing-what-you-love. One of those ingenious inventions is the vacuum mop combo.

Exactly what it sounds like, this all-in-one product does double duty (meaning it takes up far less space in your home than if you had the two separately) and essentially halves the time you spend cleaning. What a game-changer!

2024’s top vacuum mops

  1. LG A9 Kompressor auto-emptying handstick and power mop vac in Calming Green, $1599, The Good Guys (here’s why)
  2. Kogan SmarterHome LX18 Pro robot vacuum cleaner and mop with auto-empty dock, $549, Kogan (here’s why)
  3. V15s Detect Submarine Complete, from $1649, Dyson (here’s why)

The best vacuum mop combos on the market

01

LG A9 Kompressor auto-emptying handstick and power mop vac in Calming Green

$1399, The Good Guys

Jack of all trades and master of them all. This cordless stick vacuum mop combo is a home appliance superhero. With three interchangeable heads, the CordZero allows you to vacuum floorboards, vacuum carpet, vacuum and mop at the same time, or just mop. Plus, its clever design and available stylish colourways mean it is far from a visual burden.

Key features:

  • Auto-empty dust bin
  • Power Drive hot mop
  • Handy accessory storage
  • 5-step filtration system

What we think…

Homes To Love Senior Content Producer Lucy Francis took LG’s CordZero® auto-emptying handstick and power mop vac for a test drive, and this is what she thought.

I have owned a trusty Miele corded vacuum for years. Although it is completely competent, my main gripe is its size and mobility. My husband and I welcomed our first son earlier this year (and by son, I mean miniature schnauzer puppy, Murphy), and whether he’s munching it out of my indoor plants or bringing it into the house via his beard, he is a dirt machine. You can bet that lugging that Miele out every day quickly became very stale.

Enter: LG’s A9 Kompressor vac/mop. I’ll be totally honest, when the box for this newly-launched stick vacuum mop combo arrived, I was scared. It was huge and made even huge-er by my small, 75-square-metre apartment. But I needn’t have worried. Once unpacked, it fit snugly next to the bookshelf. I thought having a vacuum front-and-centre in the living room would be visually jarring, but its sleek design blends right in. The interchangeable heads and ability to mop without vacuuming and vice versa were a deal maker for me, since my apartment has floorboards, tiles and carpet. Plus, the auto-emptying function is pretty damn cool. The suction is, admittedly, not quite a match for my Miele, but I have absolutely adored having the option to do a quick whiparound or a more thorough mop — and I can say with complete confidence that my apartment is far cleaner thanks to its arrival.

02

Kogan SmarterHome LX18 Pro robot vacuum cleaner and mop with auto-empty dock

$549, Kogan

If you’d like to leave the cleaning to someone else – namely, a robot – then this intelligent little guy may be your answer. This robot vacuum mop combo is engineered with the latest navigation and mapping technology to deliver sparkling clean results, every time. Plus, with its smart features and auto-empty dock, hands-free cleaning really is hands-free.

Key features:

  • Advanced laser navigation technology
  • 4000Pa suction power
  • 3D obstacle detection and avoidance
  • Anti-fall and collision sensors
  • Schedule, control and track via the SmarterHome app
  • Auto-emptying dock
  • Washable HEPA filter

05

MACH V1 Ultra

$999.95, Eufy

This steam mop and stick vacuum combo promises to leave you with ultra-clean surfaces thanks to a constant 110°C steam stream and powerful suction. It can run for up to 82 minutes, so even if yours is the biggest mansion on the block, you should be able to clean it all in one go.

Key features:

  • SteamWave produces constant 110°C steam stream
  • Ozone disinfection technology – aqueous ozone removes up to 99.9% of common germs and odours
  • 16800Pa powerful suction power
  • Up to 82 mins run time
  • Triple self-clean system
  • JetBlades technology dries wet floors efficiently

06

Tineco Floor One S5 Steam smart wet-dry vacuum cleaner and steam mop

$559 (usually $699), Amazon

This Tineco all-in-one is oh-so-smart. It has been created with smart sensor technology, giving it the ability to automatically detect how dirty the floor is and apply the appropriate amount of detergent, water, roller pressure and section power. It also has a self-cleaning function, so maintenance is made easy.

Key features:

  • iLoop smart sensor technology automatically adjusts suction power, brush roller speed and water flow
  • High temperature steam
  • Dual tank system
  • Self cleaning for easy maintenance

Is a vacuum mop worth it?

That answer to this question really depends upon what you value most. Let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons, shall we?

What are the pros of a vacuum mop combo?

  • Storage: having a two-for-one appliance means you don’t need to find space for the two separately. So if you live in a small home or an apartment, they’re heaven-sent
  • Clever capabilities: it’s an ever-evolving market out there as tech advances in leaps and bounds. Some vacuum mop combos include features like self-emptying functionality, interchangeable accessories and sleek design — and they’re only getting fancier
  • Time-saving: two birds, one stone – need we say more?

What are the cons of a vacuum mop combo?

  • Suction power — a lot of the more compact options available come in a cordless, stick vac or robot format, which tend to have less power than their corded, more traditional counterparts.
  • Surfaces — some designs don’t have interchangeable heads, meaning you can’t use one function without the other. Not ideal for carpet!
  • Small spaces — the mop heads on these products tend to be quite large, making it difficult to get into hard-to-reach places such as behind the toilet.

Dyson has changed the discourse around the once-tiring chore of vacuuming the house with its impressive range of powerful cordless stick vacuums. So much so, that Dyson stick vacuums have become a cult buy for the home and reside in many shopping wish lists for Aussies (and if a kid’s toy version of this vacuum isn’t a sign that Dyson has seriously changed the narrative when it comes to vacuuming, we don’t know what will…)

So, will the newest addition to the brand’s line up of impressive floorcare technologies – the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine – be able to change the narrative of one of the most annoying cleaning tasks of all: mopping hard floors?

Below, we get down to the nitty-gritty of what the new Dyson V15s Detect Submarine is all about.

What is the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine Complete?

Dyson’s new V15s Detext Submarine Complete is a powerful mutlifunction cordless vacuum that detangles hair, illuminates dust, and now, with the Submarine wet roller head, also washes hard floors.

The Dyson V15s Detect Submarine Complete is the brand’s first all-in-one wet-and-dry cordless vacuum cleaner – engineered as a multifunctional and versatile cleaning solution to remove dust, spills and stains.

What is the Dyson Submarine wet roller head?

The Dyson Submarine wet roller head delivers just the right amount of water to effectively remove spills, tough stains and small dry debris (such as food crumbs). So, if you’re looking for that squeaky clean floor finish – the Submarine wet roller head is your answer.

Featuring a unique eight-point hydration system that uses a pressurised chamber for even water distribution and optimal saturation across the entire roller, wiping up spills has never been easier. Filling up a bucket and a mop is now a thing of the past (finally), with the unit’s 300ml clean water tank and a 360ml dirty water tank, everything that is needed to clean your floors are all in one place.

And, if you’re concerned about where the ‘dirty water’ goes when you clean, the roller head features a durable plate that extracts contaminated water from the wet roller and deposits it into a separate waste-water tray for easy emptying. Therefore, the roller will always remain saturated with clean water from start to finish.

“Existing wet cleaning formats are commonly met with owner frustrations; largely around manoeuvrability, maintenance and pick up performance. Our solution solves these challenges and provides users with a multifunctional, compact yet powerful vacuum that takes deep cleaning to the next level,” says Charlie Park, Vice President of Floorcare R&D at Dyson.

“The launch of our first all-in-one wet-and-dry machine is an important step in Dyson’s commitment to improve everyday lives, and create cleaner, healthier homes. For the first time, we’re combining our dust illumination and sensing technologies, anti-tangle for soft furnishings and carpets alongside our new wet roller head to wash hard floors.”

How is the V15s Detect Submarine different to the Dyson WashG1?

Dyson has also released floorcare technology that simultaneously picks up both wet and dry debris from hard floors: the Dyson WashG1.

Where the Dyson Submarine is a multifunctional vacuum cleaner suitable for homes with mixed flooring or more carpet, which includes a precision-engineered wet roller head for spillages, dry vacuum cleaner heads for hard floors, with dust illumination, and for carpets, anti-tangle technologies. The Dyson WashG1 on the other hand is a dedicated wet floor cleaner suitable for homes with predominately hard flooring, engineered to wash hard floors, removing wet and dry debris in one go.

Does the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine Complete only mop?

No. The Dyson V15s Detect Submarine Complete includes three separate attachments for all your floor cleaning needs. It includes the brand’s Optic Fluffy cleaner head which was first introduced in 2021, the Digital Motorbar cleaner head which is made for sucking up hair (sans the tangling), and the newest Submarine wet roller head to clean liquids, debris and stains.

Where can I buy the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine Complete?

The new Dyson V15s Detect Submarine Complete is available now directly from Dyson. Other stockist include:

How often should you wash your linen and towels? https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/how-often-you-should-wash-your-linen-3534/ Fri, 03 May 2024 04:54:35 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/how-often-you-should-wash-your-linen-3534 We're all guilty of being lax with linen.

The post How often should you wash your linen and towels? appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Ever wondered how often you should actually be washing your linen?

We’re all guilty of leaving the washing at the bottom of our to-do list from time to time, but considering we spend 49 to 60 hours per week in our beds, regularly washing our bedding is important for mainting good hygiene.

In fact, according to The Sleep Foundation, the dirt, sweat and oil that builds up in our sheets can contribute to allergies, skin breakouts and asthma, so giving those dirty sheets a wash is actually vital to our health.

As a general rule, The Sleep Foundation says we should wash our sheets and pillowcases once per week, but if you have pets that sleep on your bed, you should wash your bedding every three to four days.

While there are no set rules, it’s a good idea to follow this simple cheat sheet on how often you should wash your bedlinen, towels and pyjamas, because, let’s face it, there’s no better feeling than slipping into fresh linen sheets.

How often to wash kitchen linen

Tea towels

Kitchen tea towels need a wash after every use, or in other words, every day. No matter how much detergent you use to wash the dishes, your tea towels will still pick up bacteria when drying them, so swapping out your tea towels on a daily basis is the way to go.

How often to wash bathroom linen

Facecloths

Facecloths should be washed after EVERY use. If you cleanse with a face cloth and don’t wash it before your next use, then you’re technically wiping bacteria back into your skin.

Bath towels

According to the Cleaning Institute, bath towels should be washed after three uses. It’s also important to make sure your towel is hung out to dry between each use, since bacteria loves moisture, and should be replaced every few years.

Photographer: Dave Wheeler | Styling: Lise Burden | Story: Real Living

How often to wash bedroom linen

Blankets and doonas

Blankets and doonas don’t need to be washed as often as sheets and pillowcases. Three times a year should do it. You could even align your schedule to the seasons and wash the lot at the beginning of each, making time to also give your mattress a quick clean every six months or so with a thorough vacuum and application of baking soda to absorb any moisture and eliminate odours, followed by a final vacuum.

Sheets and pillowcases

Sheets and pillowcases should ideally be washed once a week, or at least every second week if you’re not a particularly sweaty sleeper.

Pyjamas

Your pyjamas should be washed every three nights or so. If you shower right before bed, then you can get away with washing your PJs every five nights.

Are linen sheets worth it?

A set of good quality linen sheets are certainly an investment, but if you’re looking for bedding that will last a lifetime, then they’re an investment worth making.

The flax fibres in high-quality linen are incredibly durable, meaning your sheets will last forever and get softer over time, hence why some find linen sheets a little rough initially. Linen is also loved for its excellent heat conductivity and breathability, making it great for sleeping in all year round.

What type of towels are best?

When it comes to towels, cotton is loved for its softness and absorbency, particularly Turkish cotton, which is known for its impressive quick-drying abilities. However, if you’re looking for a more eco-friendly choice, bamboo towels are a good alternative, and are not only more sustainable to produce but have antimicrobial properties too.

Condensation on your windows? Here’s why it matters and how to prevent it https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/cleaning/condensation-on-windows/ Fri, 03 May 2024 04:24:37 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=253948 Don't sweat it!

The post Condensation on your windows? Here’s why it matters and how to prevent it appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Cooler, rainy weather is creeping in, and that means closed windows, stuffy rooms and lower air quality in our homes. And, unlike some other home ailments, that pesky condensation on the inside of your windows is caused by one issue that is plain and simple to diagnose. And yes – you should be paying attention to it!

Have you recently woken up to a window covered in condensation? You’ll have finally managed to exit the confines of your toasty warm bed on a cold winter morning, only to open your curtains to find an unpleasantly damp and foggy window pane obstructing your view. What a way to start the day!

Indoor condensation can be caused by a variety of factors, so we chatted to the Category Expert at Appliances Online, Colin Jones to find out what they are and what we can do about it.

What causes condensation on windows?

Indoor condensation is a symptom of a larger problem, and occurs when “warm, moist air comes into contact with cold surfaces like window panes and frames,” says Colin. This most commonly occurs when it is dramatically colder outside than inside, or “when you cook, take hot showers or use a clothes dryer”.

Is condensation on windows bad?

In general, condensation can be unsightly, like water stains on your walls or windows. But it can also cause other, more serious inconveniences, like musty smells or small amounts of mould on the surrounding frame.

If condensation only appears occasionally, like when you take a long, hot shower, there likely isn’t anything to worry about. You can just prop open a window and let the moisture exit your home. “If you don’t have this option, you can use exhaust fans in the bathroom and kitchen to remove excess moisture from the air,” Colin says.

However, if you are constantly battling with droplets on the inside of your windows, or especially when it forms between two panes of double-glazed glass, it can mean that there is an issue or fracture in the seal between the panes. But fear not, you can always repair or replace damaged window seals to prevent moisture forming. Renters will just need to chat to their landlord, and apartment-owners to strata, beforehand.

How to prevent condensation on windows

There are a number of ways how to prevent condensation on windows. Ventilation will go a long way towards maintaining a mould-free home, says Dee Carter, a professor in microbiology from the University of Sydney. “[Ventilation] will help clear out the polluted air and in the case of moulds will help to dry the space and reduce mould growth,” she explains.

Mould thrives in moist environments, and a home’s general humidity level would range between 30% and 50% for indoor areas, depending on where you live. To keep mould growth in check, keeping the humidity below 50% is essential. Colin says appliances like dehumidifiers or air conditioners are great options to quickly reduce the humidity inside.

And how do dehumidifiers work again? “Air passes through the sensors on the unit and will extract excess moisture from the air. This moisture will be captured in a water storage container which you simply remove, empty and replace when needed.”

Otherwise, it’s time to look at your window infrastructure. “Double-glazed windows can help keep the temperature of your window surface above the dew point, reducing the likelihood of condensation forming on the cold surface,” says Colin.

Winter is coming, which means cosy evenings spent wrapped up in wool blankets, swapping out your linen sheets for your flannelette set, and unfortunately, a rise in cold and flu cases.

Of course, maintaining a regular cleaning schedule goes a long way in reducing the amount of time we spend on the couch with a box of tissues. But experts are also urging us to be aware of health risks beyond your average cold.

“Scientists are concerned by the rise in the number of bacterial infections and other illnesses that are becoming increasingly resistant to treatments,” CEO of Jim’s Cleaning Group, Ali Olmez, says.

“Unfortunately, many dangers are lurking around the home and it is more important than ever to ensure that our homes are treated with a deep clean at least once a year and that we are constantly staying vigilant and aware of the risks.”

Colds and flus aside, an increasingly common illness that starts in the home, and that we should be more aware of, is Sick Building Syndrome.

What is sick building syndrome?

Sick Building Syndrome, or SBS, is a condition in which people experience various symptoms of illness or even chronic disease as result of the building they work or reside in. Symptoms vary but can include headache, fatigue, dry cough and skin rashes.

Dee Carter, a professor in microbiology from the University of Sydney says SBS is caused by a range of different things, including indoor pollution from carpets, glues and paints (chemical contaminants), and indoor moulds (a biological contaminant).

“It has become prevalent in some towns following wide-scale flooding,” Dee says, noting New Orleans post-Hurricane Katrina as an example.

What can you do to keep your home clean and safe?

Fortunately, there are a range of ways we can keep viruses, bacteria and other contaminants at bay. Here are some top tips cleaning experts swear by.

1. Ventilate

While it may not seem like much, chucking the window open can actually go a long way in maintaining a safe and clean home. In fact, Dee says ventilation is the most important way to mitigate the risk of SBS.

“This will help clear out the polluted air and in the case of moulds will help to dry the space and reduce mould growth,” she explains.

Simone Tsigolis, founder and director of cleaning company Jetlag Remedy, agrees and suggests regularly opening windows or using exhaust fans in high-moisture areas (mould famously loves moisture) such as bathrooms and kitchens.

2. Maintain low humidity

Along with ensuring your home is well-ventilated, it’s also important to keep humidity levels low. Mould thrives in moist environments, so keeping the humidity below 50 per cent is a must. If you live on the east coast of Australia, you’ll be no stranger to humidity, and hopefully no stranger to a dehumidifier too. But if mould has already made its presence known, Simone says it’s important to select the right products.

“One standout option is the For All Starter Kit, available at For All Australia,” Simone says.

“Most of us dealing with mould are simply trying to keep common areas like bathrooms clean, and that’s where products like For All really shine. It’s designed for safe, effective cleaning on non-porous surfaces, making it an excellent choice for routine maintenance.”

“However, it’s important to recognise when a mould issue surpasses the capabilities of DIY efforts. Significant mould problems should be handled by professional remediation teams who are trained to address the root causes,” she says.

3. Sanitise high-touch surfaces

According to Ali, the kitchen and bathroom are hotspots for bacteria and microbes in any home.

“These rooms of the house are the most germ-infested because they contain many high-touch surfaces,” he says.

Other often-forgotten spots that will benefit from a clean include door knobs, light switches, and of course, your phone.

4. Dust and vacuum regularly

During the colder months we tend to spend more time indoors with our windows and doors shut from the cold, and in turn, keep dust inside. Along with ventilation, removing dust and debris by dusting and vacuuming regularly will help keep your home clean and healthy.

5. Invest in an air purifier

If you want to go the extra mile, investing in a quality air purifier will significantly reduce the presence of airborne bacteria, viruses, dust, smoke and pollutants. Simone says air purifiers are especially helpful in bedrooms and living areas.

Do your towels still smell after a wash? This is the secret to fresh-smelling towels https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/cleaning/towels-smell-10732/ Mon, 29 Apr 2024 07:03:05 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/towels-smell-10732 Make your old towels feel fluffy and as fresh as new with two simple ingredients.

The post Do your towels still smell after a wash? This is the secret to fresh-smelling towels appeared first on Homes To Love.

    ]]>
You may wash them regularly and hang them up after use, but still be asking yourself: why do my towels smell?

Despite our best efforts to keep them clean, towels often develop a less-than-fresh smell. What you may be surprised to learn is that one of the main causes of this is actually detergent build-up. Over time, soap residue accumulates in the fibres of the towels, stopping them from absorbing as much water as possible, and from drying as well as they could.

Bacteria then starts to build up in the fabric, and, hey presto, you’ve got yourself mildewy, smelly towels in a pile of just-washed laundry. But the good news is, you can make your old towels feel as fluffy and fresh as new, with two ingredients: white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda.

If they’re left out to dry properly, bath towels shouldn’t need to be washed more than once a week.

    (Photography: Anson Smart)

How do you wash towels to keep them smelling fresh?

    1. Put your towels in the washing machine with a cup of white vinegar instead of washing detergent, then wash on a hot cycle.
    2. When you hit the rinse cycle, add half a cup of bicarbonate of soda, and run as normal.
    3. Remove your towels, and dry them thoroughly on the line or in the dryer.

Preventative measures to stop smelly towels after washing

    • Always allow towels to dry thoroughly. Never leave them on the floor, and make sure your towel racks allow space for air to circulate. Using exhaust fans will stop the bathroom from becoming too humid for towels to dry properly.
    • Better yet, invest in a heated towel rail if you can, to help speed up the drying process.
    • Keep older towels for odd jobs – this includes drying your pets. The less you need to give them a heavy-duty wash, the less product build-up they’ll suffer.
    • Stick to the recommended amount of laundry product, if not less.
    • Give towels the white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda treatment every third or fourth wash as a matter of habit.
    • Don’t use commercial fabric softeners on towels; they coat them with a thin layer of chemicals, making them less absorbent. White vinegar is a better (and cheaper) choice to soften and freshen them.

How often should you replace towels?

Like anything used daily, there will eventually come a time when you need to replace your towels, because let’s face it, no amount of white vinegar or detergent can cover up faded colour, pulled threads, and stiff, scratchy material. Depending on the quality, you can usually expect towels to last between two and five years before they should be replaced with a new set.

Here’s our guide to the best bath towels to shop.

What to shop to stop your towels from smelling

    01

    Cornell’s white vinegar 2L

    $5, Woolworths

Costing less than a coffee for a whole two litres, stocking your pantry with white vinegar is a no-brainer. Often used in cooking, you can also use it to clean plenty of other things around the house, including your dishwasher, oven door, and more.

    Key features:

    • Naturally fermented
    • Heaps of uses around the home
    • Made in Australia

    02

    Mckenzie’s bi-carb soda 1kg

    $3.95, Woolworths

Another cheap and cheerful ingredient you can pick up from your local supermarket. It’s yet another one that can also be used for cleaning several things around the house. For example, you can sprinkle some down the sink every now and then, and follow with hot water to blast away lingering smells.

    Key features:

    • Free of aluminium-based additives
    • Used for cooking, cleaning and deodorising
    • Non-toxic

    03

Hydrotherm 10-bar swivel heated towel rail

    from $1390, Temple & Webster

But by far the best solution is preventing the problem in the first place. Not letting your towels stay damp for too long is a great way, and for those who can warrant it, a heated towel rail is one of life’s greatest luxuries. This brushed nickel option has plenty of space for hanging, so the whole family’s towels will fit.

    Key features:

    • Comes in three finishes
    • Swivel for convenient access
    • Afterpay available
    koala-eco-wash

    04

    Key features:

    • Natural and non-toxic

    • No synthetic fragrance

    Do pet vacuums really work?

Investing in a vacuum cleaner that is designed specifically for picking up pet hair is a must, says Colin Jones, Category Expert at Appliances Online.

“Pet vacuums have a better filter system and have more accessories, such as turbo brush heads,” he says. These brush heads have the ability to loosen and lift pet hair from hard floors, upholstered surfaces and carpet. “Some vacuums will even come with two types of turbo heads: a large one for floors and a smaller one for furniture.”

Another feature to look out for is a machine with a HEPA filter. A vacuum cleaner with a good filtration system will improve the air quality in your home as it cleans, reducing the amount of dust, allergens and irritants in your home.

What is the best pet vacuum for carpeted floors?

The secret to finding the best vacuum cleaners for dog and cat hair that will pick up pet hair from carpeted floors is all in the brush head, says Colin.

“When using a normal vacuum cleaner without the beater system, you are just picking up dirt that is sitting on top, not from deep in the carpet. Long dog and cat hair will get caught in between the carpet pile and will not get drawn into the vacuum cleaner,” he says.

How to choose a cordless vacuum cleaner for your home

When it comes to selecting the right cordless vacuum you first need to look at where you live. If you’re living in a larger home, a good battery life and large bin will be key features to consider. If you’re living in an apartment, your priority might be a lightweight, smaller design that allows you to get into tighter spaces, or a vacuum that packs away compactly so it is easier to store.

You should also consider factors such as suction strength and extra features that might make the vacuum more suited for homes with pets if you have a four-legged friend that tends to shed.

Finally, it’s also worth comparing the warranties that comes with different brands and retailers of cordless vacuum cleaners. A warranty of two years or more is great for peace of mind and means you are assured a good working machine for longer.

Do cordless vacuums work as well as corded?

While there may be concerns that a stick vacuum doesn’t work as effectively as traditional plug-in vacuum cleaners, the ever-evolving development of cordless vacuums means we are constantly seeing updated models being released that are more powerful, practical and sleeker than ever.

The main benefit of a cordless vacuum is that you can zip around your home without worrying about trailing a long cord behind you, and you’re not restricted to only cleaning certain zones based on the length of your cord and distance from the power socket.

However, the main benefit of a corded vacuum is that you don’t have to worry about the battery life of your machine – a corded vacuum will keep working and cleaning for as long as you need. There’s nothing more frustrating than getting halfway through your chore and the battery of your vacuum cutting out – so this is something to consider if you have a very large home or pets that shed a lot.

The humble vacuum cleaner has been radically transformed in recent years, largely due to technological advances, so choosing the best vacuum cleaner for your home can sometimes be more challenging than you might think.

The new appliances are lighter and often cordless. Some can be controlled remotely via your smartphone – and many are better for allergy sufferers. Great convenience however, can sometimes come with greater costs, so how exactly are you supposed to find the right machine for your home?

“[In terms of trends] people are moving away from canister vacuum cleaners to cordless handsticks and robotic vacuums,” observes Colin Jones, Category Expert at Appliances Online, describing a general shift in preferences across the country. “People often get both a cordless handstick, for spot clearing and a robotic vacuum for everyday cleaning.”

Here’s our guide to the major types of vacuum cleaners on the market and the pros and cons of each. It will put you on the right track to selecting the best one for your home and family…

What to consider when choosing the best vacuum cleaners for your home

Style Each style of vacuum cleaner has its pros and cons, so it’s important to consider which factors you’d like to prioritise. For example, is convenience or battery power the most important factor for you?

Floor type While many vacuums come with an array of additional attachments to allow you to vacuum efficiently on all surfaces and even help reach into the farthest nooks and crannies, some models do not. A vacuum designed for carpet is very different from one that’s optimised for floorboards.

Battery power Mainly a problem for cordless and robot vacuums — consider the size of your home and how much runtime you will need. Many stick vacuums allow you to purchase an additional battery to help extend your runtime as needed.

Suction power Not all vacuums suck equally. In addition to looking at the suction force (check the air wattage — 100AW is a good place to start!), you’ll want to examine the filtration system in your vacuum. An easily clogged filter will have a dramatic impact on your vacuum’s suction power throughout its runtime.

Cleaning factor How easy is your vacuum to empty and clean? Many robot vacuums can self-empty and clean, while corded vacuums with bags ensure all of your dirt and dust stays confined during the disposal process.

Different types of vacuum cleaners and the benefits and downsides of each

    Stick and handheld vacuums

The biggest trend in floor care is undoubtedly the newer lightweight stick/handheld cleaners. Stick vacuum cleaners have rapidly improved in both suction and battery life, and usually come with an assortment of attachments that make them a truly viable option for all homes and their surfaces.

In the past, one of the major downsides of cordless vacuums has been their smaller battery and need for regular recharging. Newer models allow for quick-swapping with additional batteries allowing you to instantly extend your runtime. Some models, like the Dyson Outsize also come with significantly larger cleaner heads to help make cleaning bigger spaces more efficient.

Suction strength and hardy filters have also become a mainstay in the category. Heavy-duty filtration systems are designed to ensure your vacuum can clean the most minuscule particles without affecting the suction quality of your device. Samsung’s JetStick vacuum for example offers an advanced 5-layer dust filtration system which is ideal for minimising allergens in the home.

But, it’s worth noting that sticks are not always great for carpeted areas, especially those with a shag finish. And, depending on the size of your home, they still might not be ideal if you like to do all the vacuuming at once.

However, they are a fantastic option for people who tend to clean in short, sharp bursts or do quick touch-ups every day or so. Their compact nature also makes them easy to store — especially in smaller homes and apartments.

When you only want or need to do a bit here and there, you can’t beat a hands-on option.

    Canister vacuums

It may come as a surprise, but people are still comfortable with using canister vacuums, says Colin. “Their compartments are typically larger and the perception is that, as they are powered directly from an outlet, they are more powerful than the cordless options. With a canister you also don’t have to worry about running out of charge,” he explains.

A leader in this category is Miele – and Robin Werth, head of category management and marketing, of Miele Australia and New Zealand, believes canister vacuum cleaners offer the ideal solution for a more powerful, deep clean.

Robin is an advocate for bagged vacuum cleaners, and Miele has no intention of phasing them out. “Bagged vacuum cleaners remain Miele’s best sellers and the category continues to grow due to popularity,” he says. “Key reasons include hygienic dust disposal and cleanliness, along with convenience and no need for maintenance.”

It’s worth noting that allergy sufferers usually prefer bagged cleaners because they contain indoor allergens and dust better.

Packed with power, the classic style is still your go-to for getting the job done on all floor types.

    Robot vacuums

Ideal for homes with hard surfaces such as timber or tiles, robot vacuum cleaners take most of the work out of keeping your floor clean. Not only will they work while you’re out of the house, but they’re also smart enough to return to their hubs whenever they need recharging.

“Not long ago, robotic vacuums were synonymous with being more of a nuisance than they were helpful as they lacked intelligence and adequate navigation abilities,” says Karen Powell, Head of Ecovacs Robotics for Australia and New Zealand. “New technology coupled with the ability for them to compete with more traditional vacuums in terms of suction power, proves that robotic vacuums are now no longer a gimmick but genuinely helpful home essentials adding a plethora of functional benefits in our homes.”

“Robot vacuums are proving a popular solution for the time-poor people, removing the grunt work associated with vacuuming,” says Colin. “Some models will manoeuvre around your furniture and will know to put the brakes on at the top of your stairs. If this convenience isn’t enough, you can even control some of these vacuums using an app on your smartphone or tablet.”

The navigational technology of robot vacuums continues to improve in leaps and bounds, and some models like the Ecovacs’ OZMO range are hybrid models – meaning that they can mop, sweep and vacuum your floor, which can be extra handy for those with timber or tiled floors.

Why apply all that elbow grease when a new machine can do it for you – and never complain!

    New vacuum technology

In addition to improved suction and convenience, many vacuums have sought to move ahead of the pack with even more technological advancements. When considering which vacuum is the best for you, we’d recommend considering which factors will help make your life and cleaning process easier. Here are some of our favourite new features…

Robot vacuums, of course, have in-built mapping and object detection and this technology continues to get more and more sophisticated. But, newer models like EcoVacs Robotic‘s DEEBOT T9+ take their vacuum design to the next level with the addition of an integrated air freshener along with their mopping and vacuuming capabilities.

There’s nothing worse than emptying your vacuum cleaner’s dustbin and finding a mushroom cloud’s worth of dust spilling back into the air. Samsung’s Jet Stick Vacuum pairs beautifully with the Samsung Clean Station which automatically cleans the dustbin and boasts an ultrafine filter that ensures allergens and dust don’t get released back into the home.

Dyson’s Dyson Detect V15 features a handy particle counter on its LCD screen which acoustically senses the size and number of particles you vacuum to instantly highlight when a vacuumed area is truly clean. A built-in laser in the fluffy cleaner head also illuminates dust particles on the ground to help make cleaning easier.

Should I get a robot vacuum mop combo or separate devices?

If you consider the energy it takes to first vacuum your house, and then mop the floors, robot vacuum and mop devices’ ability to effortlessly and independently tackle both tasks at once seems pretty appealing. This means you don’t have to spend time switching between two different machines, moving furniture around the house, or dealing with the hassle of having a million cords splayed across the floor.

Storage is another thing to think about. If you buy two separate devices, you’ll have to find two places to store them too – not always easy, considering the size of most regular vacuums and mops. Robot vacuum and mop cleaners, on the other hand, are highly compact in size and generally require one small charging port that can be disconnected and stashed away whenever you need.

While they can be pricey, several brands have come out with their own versions of the robot vacuum and mop combo, all at differing price points. Below, we’ve collected a list of some of the best to buy in Australia.

One of the easiest ways to reduce your impact on the environment and your exposure to toxic chemicals is by using eco-friendly cleaning products in the home.

In recent years we’ve seen a shift away from the once-common chemical-laden household cleaners and the reshaping of the industry in favour of products that are kinder to people and the environment. As such, the allure of “green” cleaning products and natural cleaning solutions is stronger than ever.

Sadly, just because cleaning products have the words “all natural” or “green” on the packaging, it doesn’t always mean these products are completely natural or eco-friendly.

So, how do you tell if a brand is legitimately eco-friendly or just using clever marketing tools to capitalise on our desire to fill our homes with eco-conscious cleaners? These are the top things to look out for, and a quick guide to the best on the market…

Why should you use eco-friendly cleaning products?

Eco-friendly cleaning products (in their true form) are created with natural ingredients and include none of the harsh cleaning agents that are found in traditional cleaning products. Ethically made and vegan, eco-friendly cleaning products are not tested on animals and are designed to be safe to humans, pets and the environment.

“Choosing eco-friendly sends a clear message to the new generation at home to be responsible towards the environment,” explains the team at Nontre.Co. “Using plant-based, non-toxic formulas to clean our homes prevents air, water and land pollution and choosing biodegradable packing reduces landfill as the materials break down through natural processes.”

    What makes a product eco-friendly?

“Eco-friendly cleaning products are transparent on the label about exactly what they contain,” explains Jessica Bragdon, founder of Australian eco-friendly cleaning brand Koala Eco. “Our products are safe, non-toxic, and naturally derived, and are bottled in 100 percent recycled and recyclable materials.”

“It’s not only about what the product label says, however. I think customers want planet, people and pet-friendly products made by companies that stake their reputation on sourcing eco-friendly ingredients,” adds Jessica.

Some eco-friendly brands like Koala Eco and Nontre take their commitment to the environment even further: Koala Eco makes a donation to One Percent for the Planet with every purchase, and every purchase from Nontre’s Rainforest Collection results in a tree being planted in bushfire affected parts of Australia.

    08

Skipper is truly “plastic negative” and it’s not just their reusable bottles and dispensers and compostable refill packaging we’re talking about. From 2021-23 the brand has collected the equivalent of over 5 million bottles of plastic waste in developing communities through its partners at Plastic Bank. Their “just add water” eco-friendly cleaning and personal care products are easy to use and affordable, making this an incredibly eco-swap.

    09

You might recognise Zero Co from their brightly coloured reusable bottles which are made from ocean, beach and landfill waste, in case you were wondering. And while Zero Co’s main goal is to reduce plastic waste by supplying reusable ‘forever’ bottles and refill pouches, their cleaning and body products are made from plant-based ingredients that are gentle on the planet and you.

“Just like the milk man re-imagined,” you can sign up to Zero Co to purchase your Starter Box and then get refill pouches delivered straight to your door as you need. To make the process even easier, they will supply a return mailer so you can send back your empty pouches to be recycled.

Australian-owned and operated Nontre.Co specialises in creating eco-friendly cleaning products and personal care products that focus on using hardworking natural ingredients. Plant-based ingredients and essential oils come together to create beautiful fragrances, and each product is 100 per cent cruelty free and made ethically and sustainably. Each purchase from Nontre.Co’s Rainforest Collection results in a tree being planted in bushfire affected parts of Australia, so every purchase directly goes to improving the environment before you even open the box.

Launched in 2020, Pleasant State started with a crowdfunding campaign and was designed to help Australian households minimise waste and banish harmful chemicals from the home. Pleasant State’s products centre around their beautifully designed reusable glass and silicone bottles, and high-quality cleaning solutions that come in compact and eco-friendly cleaning “bars”. Simply drop the cleaning bar in the atomiser and add water to create a 500ml hardworking cleaner.

    12

Made in Victoria’s Ferntree Gully, Cove lives and breathes the eco-friendly ethos. Seeking to reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in landfill, the Cove’s atomisers are made of aluminium, which is infinitely recyclable and recycled at a higher rate than plastic in Australia. Similarly, the pouch refill system helps to reduce plastic, and the pouches are also recyclable with REDcycle – simply drop the empty pouches off at your local Coles or Woolies to give your pouch a new lease on life. With no synthetic fragrances and all plant-derived ingredients, Cove’s cleaning products are hard-working and beautifully scented.

    How to detect ‘green-washing’

If you really want to ensure your natural cleaning products of choice are in fact “green”, then you need to scrutinise the labels and enquire to find out the complete list of ingredients if the packaging is vague. The best rule of thumb? You want to steer clear of anything that contains chlorine, mineral oil, artificial dyes, fragrances, phosphates, or triclosan.

“Avoid anything that says ‘hazardous, corrosive, warning, danger or irritant,’ and check to see if the labels say what the products don’t contain, as well as what they do,” advises Jessica. “Seek out products containing 100 per cent pure essential oils, combined with plant-based ingredients sugar-based surfactants and sugar-based biodegradable alcohol.”

Inspired to up your eco-friendly cleaning game? Here are some true eco-friendly cleaning products we love and trust.

    Other household cleaning alternatives:

    • Microfibre cloths they may be made from synthetic materials, but these cloths, when dry, pick up dust like nothing else. When damp, they cut through grime with just a little elbow grease. They can also be thrown in the washing machine and used again and again – but make sure you don’t add fabric softener. It coats the fibres and reduces their effectiveness.
    • White vinegar: great degreaser and when diluted can be used on wooden floors, tiles and benchtops.
    • Lemons: tougher than vinegar. Try rubbing a cut lemon dipped in salt on sink stains.
    • Bi-carbonate of soda: use on its own as an abrasive or combine with vinegar to remove tough stains.
    • Salt: good natural scourer. Dip a toothbrush in salt and scrub tile grout.
    • Washing soda:this is more alkaline than baking soda so use gloves. A natural alternative to sugar soap.
    • Soap flakes: when dissolved in warm water, pure soap is a good all-round cleaner. If you need extra power, add some washing soda.

5 things in your home that visitors always notice https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/cleaning/things-visitors-always-notice-in-your-home-6284/ Sat, 23 Mar 2024 03:04:23 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/things-visitors-always-notice-in-your-home-6284 You may be able to turn a blind eye to the clutter, but your guests won't.

The post 5 things in your home that visitors always notice appeared first on Homes To Love.

    ]]>
In a perfect world, we would have endless spare hours to primp our homes to perfection when expecting guests. In the real world, we do not.

You may be able to turn a blind eye to the clutter covering your kitchen bench and the empty toilet rolls taking over your bathroom, but your guests won’t.

If you’ve got visitors coming over in the near future or you like to be prepared for unexpected guests, here are five things that they will always notice in your home.

    1. The entryway

The entrance to your home is the first impression visitors get so it pays to make it a good one.

    What to do:

    • Put away shoes
    • Shake out your door mat
    • Sweep the front entry
    • Create a spot for visitors to take off their shoes and put their bag down
    • Use fresh flowers or an indoor plant to freshen up the space
    • Add a hallway mirror to bring light and the illusion of a bigger space

This gracious Victorian terrace in inner Sydney made an illuminating move into a brighter, more inclusive way of living without shedding its beautiful heritage facade.

(Photography: Tom Ferguson | Styling: Anna Delprat | Story: Belle)

    2. The smell

You may not think your house has a smell, but it’s the first thing visitors will notice – good or bad. It’s always a nice idea to burn a scented candle or some essential oils to create a welcoming and relaxing scent that will appeal to all noses. Reed diffusers are also a great low-touch option.

    What to do:

Clean lines and beautiful natural stone combine to create a beautifully designed kitchen conceived by Lara Ette Design, with fresh flowers to bring it to life.

(Photography: Chris Warnes | Styling: Madeline McFarlane | Story: Australian House & Garden)

    3. Clutter

With life, comes clutter. Now, we’re not saying you need to go full Marie Kondo and completely rid your home of every single bit of clutter, but at least do a general tidy up.

Tip: If you don’t have time to put everything back in its right place, the linen closet or laundry are both fabulous hiding spots.

    What to do:

    • Store away kids toys in simple, stylish baskets
    • Create a drawer or tray for bills, letters and other life admin
    • Put away that pile of washing that is waiting to be folded or better yet, hide it in the laundry
    • Clean up social spots like the dining table and kitchen bench
    • Create a functioning and tidy pantry with uniform storage containers

    4. A dirty bathroom

If you only have time to clean one room in your home, make it the bathroom. A dirty bathroom is not only unhygienic but just downright gross, especially when it’s not your own.

    What to do:

    • Wipe down the sink and vanity, if you hate the smells of chemicals from cleaning products, eco-friendly alternatives are a great option
    • Add perfume drops for your loo, No.2’s post-flush perfume is a great option keep unwanted smells at bay.
    • Scrub the toilet
    • Clean the mirror
    • Restock the toilet paper, and if you’re notorious for always forgetting to, maybe a handy toilet paper subscription is your saving grace
    • A nice soap and scented candle won’t go astray

Rather than vie for water views, this new beach house in Sorrento is designed to gaze inward and instill serenity from within.

(Photography: Rory Gardiner | Styling: Jess Kneebone | Story: Real Living)

    5. Pet hair

Pet hair can be very unappealing to people, especially if they don’t have pets of their own. If you have pets in the house, make a little extra effort to give the place a vacuum, and remove pesky pet hair from your sofa and other soft furnishings.

    What to do:

    • Vacuum your sofa and wipe over it with a damp cloth
    • Put away your pet’s toys
    • Clean up the area around their food and water bowl
    • Change the kitty litter

Designed for relaxing and entertaining, this meticulously remodelled Melbourne home is a lesson in quiet luxury.

How to clean skirting boards https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/cleaning/how-to-clean-skirting-boards/ Mon, 18 Mar 2024 02:28:46 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/how-to-clean-skirting-boards-12514 Skirting boards - or baseboards - can be tricky areas to clean. Here's three simple ways to tackle them.

The post How to clean skirting boards appeared first on Homes To Love.

    ]]>
You’ve cleaned your floors, you’ve dusted, you’ve given yourself a half-hour break, and yet your skirting boards are dusty again! Often they’re the last thing you think to clean, but thanks to their shape, skirting boards can be very good at catching dust. If you haven’t already, it’s time to add ‘clean skirting boards’ to your regular home cleaning checklist, and it’s easy with this step-by-step guide.

    How to clean skirting boards

    1. Dry dust

If your boards aren’t too grimy, you can do a dry dust. I use a clean paintbrush for this and find it works very well (just vacuum up the debris at the end).

    2. Cleaning wipes

If you don’t have much time, you can use cleaning wipes. These are convenient and effective but not very environmentally-friendly, unless you can source biodegradable wipes.

    3. Mop and dry

The most thorough way to clean skirting boards, though, is a mix of wet and dry dusting. To begin with, use a mop dipped in a small amount of white vinegar and warm water (not too much water, you don’t want streaks). Run the mop along the boards and allow to dry. Then rub a fabric softener sheet over the boards. These will leave a residue on the boards that actually repels dust, so you can minimise the time investment for future cleans.

How do you make skirting boards look new again?

With some simple maintenance, skirting boards can easily be revived to their former glory. A simple dust, wipe and disinfect should be all you need to keep your skirting boards in tip top shape.

Do you constantly feel like there are not enough hours in the day to do everything you need to do? Is your to-do list more like a constant reminder of what you haven’t managed to get done? Between work, kids, cooking, shopping, exercising and the rest, it’s no surprise our homes go by the wayside during the week. This often leaves us with a mountain of housework to do on the weekends, but when we lead such busy lives, the last thing we want to do is waste our weekends or our days off cleaning.

To avoid this and help you save time cleaning the house, we asked experts in cleaning shortcuts, UrbanYou Co-Founder Elke Keeley and Australia’s Faster Cleaner, Jason Shipway, for some quick cleaning tips that you can add to your weekly home maintenance routine.

Jason Shipway competing at the VIVA House of Spills Challenge. (Image: supplied)

Jason Shipway was recently crowned Australia’s Faster Cleaner at the VIVA House of Spills Challenge. Armed with nothing but fast-absorbing VIVA paper towels, Jason competed head-to-head against five other cleaning fanatics in what’s been called the Olympics of Cleaning, the VIVA House of Spills Challenge.

“It feels incredible to be crowned Australia’s Fastest Cleaner, and I’m excited to now help others embrace a quicker clean. The VIVA House Of Spills was the ultimate torture test, but the challenge showed that everyone really has the ability to speed up their clean. You just need the right tools and tips to clean smarter and faster,” comments Jason.

    1. Kitchen – 8 minutes

    • Load dirty dishes straight into the dishwasher. Soak non-dishwasher safe items in a sink of hot soapy water, including removable stove burner pieces.
    • Fill a bucket of warm soapy water and dunk in a microfibre sponge. Squeeze excess water (or you’ll get surface marks) and work top to bottom to wipe down cabinets, counters, and other surfaces.
    • Rinse your sponge between wipes.
    • Wipe down any remaining appliances and clear counters.

Keep benches clean and clutter-free to keep your kitchen look tidy.

(Photography: Ess. Creative | Story: Australian House & Garden)

    2. Bathrooms – 5 minutes

    • Spray the shower and bathtub with anti-mildew cleanser and allow to sit while you scrub and wipe down the toilet.
    • Clear counters, spray with cleanser, and wipe dry before replacing items.
    • Wash down the shower and bathtub, and rub any stubborn marks with a microfibre cloth.

    3. Bedrooms – 5 minutes

    • Tuck in sheets and pull the corners of your bed cover out to straighten. Then fluff and set the pillows.
    • Collect dirty clothes for the laundry hamper and sort clean clothes into a pile or hang them in a wardrobe.
    • Neaten any books, papers, or loose items on shelves and tables.

Making your bed everyday will make a huge difference to the look and feel of your bedroom. (Photography: Maree Homer | Story: Australian House & Garden)

    4. Floors – 10 minutes for the whole house

    • For best results for wood floors, give the area a quick vacuum first to remove excess debris. Follow with a floor steam clean, or fill a bucket with warm water and wood cleaner, and using a microfiber head mop, rinse excess water then work the floor in a W-motion.
    • When vacuuming carpeted rooms, work your way out of the room backwards in quick, swift strokes to minimise time wasted due to overlap.
    1. Adopt a ‘top to bottom, left to right’ strategy
    2. Embrace a bite-sized clean
    3. Get the right tools for the job

The post How to eliminate this tedious household chore from your vocabulary for just under $1000 appeared first on Homes To Love.

    ]]>
If there’s one household chore we could choose to never do again, washing dishes would be up there on our list of considerations. The thought of hand-washing dishes that come with damp sleeves, water splashing everywhere, and the amount of time it takes to soak, scrub, rinse, and repeat, sends us into a procrastination spiral. The result? Dirty dishes piling up in the sink and a headache waiting to happen.

Introducing the hardest worker of the family when it comes to washing up after dinner: the humble dishwasher. Truly, one of the best kitchen appliance inventions (in our opinion) – a dishwasher not only keeps your kitchen sink empty and clean but also gives you back precious time to spend with your family (or just to relax) after mealtime.

However, choosing the right dishwasher (that also doesn’t break the bank) for your household is incredibly important. And, if you’re like us, and you’ve had our fair share of experiences with dishwashers that give an underwhelming clean (read: awkward food scraps still on the side of bowls), finding a model that actually leaves your dishes sparkling clean is a must.

So, with that in mind, we’ve rounded up the best dishwashers available on the market now that are under $1000, below.

    2024’s top dishwashers under $1000

5 best upholstery steam cleaners that’ll give your old sofa a complete facelift https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/cleaning/best-upholstery-cleaner-australia-25063/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 04:56:37 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/best-upholstery-cleaner-australia-25063 Discover the magic of this handy cleaning tool.

The post 5 best upholstery steam cleaners that’ll give your old sofa a complete facelift appeared first on Homes To Love.

    ]]>
Have you been looking at your grimy sofa and reminiscing over the time when it was once a crisp, clean white rather than a sad tinge of beige? Giving your old sofa a facelift is easier than it seems, and there’s one handy tool we can thank for it: an upholstery steam cleaner.

What is an upholstery steam cleaner?

If your interests lie in cleaning, in the sense that you find yourself in an infinite scroll of satisfying cleaning videos on social media, then chances are you’ve seen the power of an upholstery steam cleaner – sucking out all the dirt and grime off of couches, sofas, carpets, and more. It’s a killer unit that gives your most prized home pieces a new life.

An upholstery steam cleaner is designed to clean upholstered surfaces using the power of high-temperature steam and suction. It is equipped with a water reservoir that heats water up to produce steam, which is then directed through a nozzle attachment onto the surface in which you are cleaning. With the combination of steam and pressure, an upholstery steam cleaner breaks down dirt, stains, bacteria, allergens, and odours, leaving your upholstered furniture pieces looking as good as new.

Is steam cleaning good for sofas?

Steam cleaning can penetrate deep into the fabric of the sofa to remove dirt and grime stuck within the fibres. It’s also a great way to remove stains and sanitise surfaces. However, it is important to check the fabric of your sofa is suitable for steam cleaning.

What fabrics are suitable for steam cleaning?

The first step to steam cleaning any surface is to check cleaning labels from the manufacturer. If your sofa allows for wet cleaning, then they are safe for steam cleaning. Generally, the following fabrics are safe for steam cleaning:

    • Polyester
    • Nylon
    • Acrylic
    • Microfibre
    • Cotton

Steam cleaning is not suitable for delicate fabrics such as:

    • Silk
    • Leather
    • Suede

Which steam cleaner is best for upholstery?

If your sofa or couch is due for a refresh, but you’re not ready to completely swap it out for a new one, cleaning with an upholstery steam cleaner is the way to go. Below, we’ve rounded up the top ones that will get the job done.

The best steam irons to keep creases at bay https://www.homestolove.com.au/shopping/best-steam-iron-australia-24662/ Mon, 12 Feb 2024 06:24:35 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/best-steam-iron-australia-24662 Let off some steam - with the added bonus of crisp shirts.

The post The best steam irons to keep creases at bay appeared first on Homes To Love.

    ]]>
One household chore that is at the bottom of our list is ironing. Whether that’s the Sunday night rush of ironing your work shirts for the week ahead or smoothing out wrinkles in your favourite dress before heading out to a special event – finding time to keep wrinkles in our clothes at bay is, unfortunately, a troublesome and timely task.

One way to keep the time spent ironing to a minimum is to invest in an efficient and easy-to-use steam iron. Not revolutionary, we know, however, finding one that suits your needs and preferences will make this household task one that is slightly more enjoyable.

What to look for when buying a steam iron

There are a few key factors to consider when purchasing your new steam iron. From basic models to those with integrated ironing boards, and more, below are some things to consider when choosing a model to opt for.

    Steam output

Finding a steam iron that allows you to control the amount of steam produced is vital – especially if you’re looking to iron a variety of fabrics. You may need more steam for heavy items or less when smoothing out wrinkles in sensitive fabrics such as silk or linen.

    Soleplate

This is the part of the iron that will come in contact (or very close to) with your pieces of clothing. Ensure the soleplate of your steam iron is made of high-quality materials. A non-stick option is popular as they are easy to clean. Stainless steel is also a popular sturdy material for soleplates. It’s important to regularly maintain the quality of your soleplate – especially from any scratches or stains – to ensure it doesn’t damage your clothes when in use.

    Capacity

This is how much water you can store in the water tank of the steam iron. A bigger capacity means less refilling. However, it may be more difficult to manoeuvre due to its weight. A clear water tank is also a great element to consider, as you’ll be able to see just how much water is left while you iron.

    Auto shut-off

A safety measure like an auto shut-off feature for a steam iron, in our opinion, is a must-have – especially when life gets busy.

The best steam irons to shop in Australia

So, if the world of crease-less clothing (sans the hard work) tickles your fancy, below, we’ve rounded up the best steam irons that will make this tedious chore easy.

    Philips PerfectCare Powerlife iron

    $149 (usually $159), David Jones

Iron everything from denim to silk in one go with the Philips PerfectCare Powerlife steam iron. Equipped with the brand’s innovative OptimalTEMP technology, there’s no need to manually adjust the temperature of your iron anymore. Plus, with its SteamGlide Plus soleplate, gliding across creases is easier than ever.

    Tefal TurboPro anti-calc steam iron

    $189, Appliances Online

With a precision tip and continuous steam diffusion, the TurboPro steam iron from Tefal is a great choice for busy households. Its Turbo Boost technology provides steam propulsion that drives deep into stubborn creases, and its built-in calc collector allows for easy maintenance.

Braun TexStyle 5 Pro steam iron

    $149, Myer

Designed with an ergonomic open handle for maximum comfort while ironing, the TexStyle 5 Pro steam iron by Braun features the brand’s top-of-the-line gliding soleplate that can glide over seams, buttons, pockets, zippers without a hiccup. Plus, with its Smart iCare mode that protects your clothes at a safe temperature, ironing your favourite garments is stress-free.

Braun Carestyle 7 Pro steam station

    $303.20, Amazon

The Carestyle 7 Pro steam station by Braun provides professional ironing results in the comfort of your own home. It also comes with a handy and secure docking system, so the fear of tipping over a hot steam iron is no longer a worry.

    Tefal IXEA Power All-In-One solution

    $629, Bing Lee

If you have space in your home or laundry, this all-in-one ironing system from Tefal is well worth considering. The IXEA Power is an iron, steamer and sanitiser all in one. With its built-in smart board that can be adjusted to three different positions (think vertical steaming, horizontal ironing, and at 30° for special garments), keeping your shirts crisp and wrinkle-free is effortless.

    Russell Hobbs Rapidsteam iron

    $39, The Good Guys

One of the more affordable models in this list is the Rapidsteam iron from Russell Hobbs – but this doesn’t mean it compromises in quality. With 2400 watts of power and a handy anti-drip design, you can iron blouses, jeans and linens without a hitch.

9 items to ban from your bedroom https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/cleaning/declutter-bedroom-12119/ Mon, 08 Jan 2024 05:20:00 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/declutter-bedroom-12119 Banish these things from your bedroom to improve its look and your sleep.

The post 9 items to ban from your bedroom appeared first on Homes To Love.

    ]]>
Although you spend more time in your bedroom than any other room in your home, it’s often the most neglected when it comes to practical design and thoughtful decoration. Just because it’s a private space that your guests don’t get to see, doesn’t mean it can double as a dumping ground for clothes (clean or dirty), clutter and daggy décor.

The biggest single thing you can do to improve the look of a bedroom (and get a more restful sleep) is to take certain items out of it.

How do I start to declutter my bedroom?

Not sure where to start? It’s true that when it comes to decluttering a space, you often have to make a bigger mess first. That’s why it’s important to set a clear goal and to have a plan before you start emptying drawers and clearing shelves.

Before you start, gather everything you’ll need: garbage bags, boxes, cloths and cleaning sprays. Then, a good place to start is by sorting your clothes into what you want to keep, donate, sell or discard. Then attend smaller surfaces like bedside tables and small drawers. Make sure you finish sorting a space before you move on to the next one.

Once you’re done, establish a routine for maintenance to make sure things don’t get cluttered again.

When decluttering your bedroom, it’s important that you’re honest with yourself in regards to your items. Often you’ll rediscover something you haven’t thought of in years, in which case, it’s highly likely that you should either discard, sell or donate it.

To help get you started, here are nine items you should banish from your bedroom right now.

    1. Pillows that don’t bounce back

Have your pillows passed their use-by date? To find out if you should replace your pillow, fold it in half and if it doesn’t spring back into shape, it’s probably time to buy yourself a new one. Keep only those that are fresh, fluffy, comfy and help you get a goodnight’s sleep. Find out how to buy the best pillow, based on the type of sleeper you are.

    2. Your random garbage

It turns out your mother was onto something when she used to make you clean your messy bedroom — there is no excuse for disorder. An untidy space can lead to anxiety and poor sleep. Bin your old knick-knacks, papers you don’t need, and other items that don’t serve a purpose.

A soothing colour scheme combined with simple furnishings makes this bedroom a restful place to be.

(Photography: Anson Smart | Story: Belle)

    3. Books you’ve already read

Yes, sometimes hardbacks are excellent conversation starters, but your bedroom isn’t a place where guests really visit. Divide them into piles for friends, fetes, and bin the rest.

    4. Your old make-up

Is your dresser and drawers filled with old make-up, perfume and toiletries that you know you’ll never use again but can’t bear to throw in the bin? Scientists from the London Metropolitan University tested products that were past their prime and found traces of harmful bacteria in four out of five — which is just another reason to make sure you chuck yours once they expire. Arrange the perfume and make-up you do use every day neatly, using decorative trays and storage vessels.

    5. Clothes you never wear

What’s hiding in your bedroom wardrobe? Is it time for a clear-out? Start by sorting your clothing into ‘keep’, ‘Good Samaritan’ and ‘bin’. Everything torn, saggy, shrunken, old, mouldy, smelly or stained goes straight into the wheelie bin. Everything too big, small or unfashionable qualifies as Good Samaritan. Throw away the clothes that don’t suit you – even if you think of them as old friends. Keep only things that present you in the most flattering way.

Don’t leave clothes and shoes strewn around your room. Make a habit of hanging them up straight away – it takes the same amount of time.

(Photography: Anson Smart | Design: Anna Carin Design | Styling: Olga Lewis | Story: Belle)

    6. Your old technology

Like your cell phone from ten years ago, your outdated laptop, an alarm clock that doesn’t work – if you’re not currently using it, out it goes. Don’t let it sit in your wardrobe collecting dust.

    7. Your overflowing laundry basket

When it comes to laundry, don’t keep it in your bedroom. Pop it in a basket in a bathroom, or laundry where you can attend to a little everyday, which means you will never have to look at huge piles again.

    8. Your snuggle pets

In this case, just gently close the door in front of your four-legged friend. Why? Well, one study found that 30 per cent of participants who slept with a pet woke up because of them, 63 per cent had poor sleep quality and 5 per cent said they had trouble falling back asleep. And, no matter how clean your pet is, a duvet covered in pet hair is not an attractive sight.

Unless your prepared to vacuum daily and wash your sheets more often than usual, don’t let your pets into your bedroom.

(Photography: Brigid Arnott | Styling: John Mangila | Story: Country Style)

    9. Your mobile phone

Ban these from the bedroom. They’re literally dirtier than a loo seat. Reading on your phone also makes it harder to fall asleep at night, leading to less-rested sleep. Plus, it exposes you to radiation. This way you can also eliminate cord cutter from your bedroom as you won’t be needing chargers plugged in next to your bed.

When it comes to Australia, we’re home to all sorts of dangerous creepy crawlies, snakes and spiders. Every year we hear news of incidences of spiders making their way into our homes, whether it be redbacks, funnel-webs or the common house spider. This happens particularly after is rains, as they find ways to sneak indoors and escape the excess moisture.

Fun fact? Bees are more deadly than a lot spiders. In fact, most spiders we find in our homes are harmless and are actually great for keeping your home free from other insects, such as flies and mozzies. Regardless, no one really likes a spider hanging around inside their home — pun intended.

Here are some easy things you can do to help keep your house and garden spider-free.

How to keep spiders out of your house and garden

Not a fan of the creepy crawlies? Follow these tips on how to spider proof your home and garden.

    (Photography: The Palm Co)

    1. Remove webs

Regularly checking for and removing spider webs from about your house and garden prevents spiders from lurking about and reproducing. A vaccum cleaner with a soft nozzle attachment will ensure you thoroughly clean the web away, otherwise a cobweb broom head or wet cloth will do the trick.

    2. Oils & candles

Spiders don’t like the smells of strong odours such as cinnamon, eucalyptus oil and citrus. Use cinnamon candles and spray eucalyptus and lemon/orange oil in areas where you often see webs.

Spiders don’t like the smell of citrus, so burning specific candles can help prevent them from wanting to come into your home.

    3. Fill in gaps

Spider-proof your house by filling in the gaps between walls and under doors where possible to prevent spiders from moving in. Not only will the prevent spiders and other nasty bugs from getting in to your home, but it will also stop those cold draughts during winter.

    4. Limit lighting

Insects are attracted to lights, and spiders eat insects. Turn off lights in unused rooms to to create a less-than-ideal environment for spiders. Simple!

    5. Maintain a clean house

Spiders love hiding in little nooks and crannies of clutter. Vacuum regularly to prevent spiders from moving in. Also keep piles of wood and other debris in your garden to a minimum and store these as far as possible from your house.

Ensure you store things such as firewood outside and away from your home, if possible.

    6. Cats & dogs

Many dogs and most cats will chase anything that moves – these energetic types can be good spider deterents. Just be sure to monitor your furry friends as you don’t want them to have an allergic reaction to the spiders venom.

    7. Apply insecticide

To prevent spiders from entering your house, apply an insecticide to the perimeters of your home. You can get these at a number of home and garden depots or alternatively you call in pest control who will do this for you.

6 tricks to get rid of ants inside your home naturally https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/cleaning/how-to-get-rid-of-ants-inside-naturally-5276/ Mon, 30 Oct 2023 23:00:00 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/how-to-get-rid-of-ants-inside-naturally-5276 Tips and tricks to help you banish pesky ants from your taking over your space, the natural way.

The post 6 tricks to get rid of ants inside your home naturally appeared first on Homes To Love.

Although relatively harmless creatures, ants are a serious pest when they start to infiltrate your home, especially in the kitchen. Their tiny stature allows them to penetrate even the most microscopic of cracks and let themselves into open pantry items, baked treats, sugar jars; you name it!

Once infested, it can be a mighty (and annoying!) feat to rid your home of an army of ants, so the trick is to prevent them entering in the first place.

These natural pest control tips and chemical-free cleaning solutions mean nothing nasty is required to rid your home of ants and, compared to professional pest control services or toxic treatments, these tricks will cost you next to nothing!

    1. Work from the outside in

Like most household pests, ants come from the outdoors in, nesting in your garden, under the house and often in the walls or floors of your home. There are plenty of natural pest control tips for the garden that will get rid of ants at the source. A simple eucalyptus oil solution or a concentrated garlic spray have both been known to put ants off and the best part it is this won’t harm your harm your plants, or you!

    2. A line of chalk will stop ants in their tracks

And we mean literally! Draw a line in chalk along the exterior of any external doors that lead into your home. Chalk is made from calcium carbonate, which ants hate, so they will be deterred to cross.

Deter ants from sneaking through cracks in doorways and windows with a simple line of chalk at these entry points.

(Photography: Hannah Puechmarin | Styling: Cheryl Carr | Story: Country Style)

    6 THINGS ANTS HATE

    • Citrus

    • Calcium carbonate i.e. chalk

    • Peppermint

    • Coffee grounds

    • Baking soda

    • Vinegar

    3. Cracks are the enemy

Doorways, windows and tiny cracks in floors or walls make the perfect point of entry for an ant colony looking for food. Making sure windows and doors are shut properly is the first step. If you have cracks that need sealing, ask and expert about what kind of caulk or sealant is best for the job.

    4. Use fresh herbs

To humans, there’s nothing better than the smell of fresh pungent herbs like sage, mint and bay leaves. To ants, there’s nothing worse! Growing these herbs in your garden should keep the ants at bay (pardon the pun) and keeping fresh cuttings of these in your kitchen or pantry is also an easy way to ward off ants and other pesky bugs.

Trying to figure out what herb to grow? Check out 10 of the best herbs to grow in your garden.

    5. Clean it up

You’re likely to find forgotten crumbs or an invisible sticky spill in even the cleanest of kitchens. If you’ve got an ant problem, you will need to be extra vigilant about keeping your kitchen crumb-free because that’s exactly what ants are after. Wipe down surfaces immediately after use and sweep or vacuum regularly.

    6. Natural cleaning solutions

Natural cleaning solutions like the classic combination of bicarb soda and vinegar will leave your house sparkling and ant-free! Add essential oils like peppermint, lemon and eucalyptus for some extra oomph and a delightful fragrance that will only discourage ants further.

Decluttering is the best way to instantly refresh your home, but it can often seem like a lot of hard work. So, if you’ve ever wondered how to declutter your house, we’ve pulled together our essential guide on how to do it in just one day.

Do you ever look around your home and feel totally overwhelmed by the clutter surrounding you? Are you guilty of stashing said clutter away, promising yourself you’ll tackle it another day? Knowing where to start can be the hardest part of decluttering and organising your home.

We called on four professional organisers to share their top tips for getting sorted in a matter of hours, not weeks (or months!).

HOW TO DECLUTTER YOUR HOME IN ONE DAY

14 organised spaces that will spark joy to inspire your next cleaning session.

    How to declutter your house

    • Have an exit strategy: know how you’re going to move stuff out of the house, and where it’s going. Set up a box or basket for each destination to streamline the end process. If you’re choosing to donate preloved items to charity, make sure the items are in reasonable shape to be sold on.

    • Allow yourself a moment to sit in the middle of each room and visualise the finished look.

    • Take stock of available storage – how you can best use what you already have and whether you need extra.

    • Have one “maybe” box for items you’re torn over – a single tub to sort later is better than hours of indecision.

    • You won’t finish every room, but these are things our experts say make the biggest difference in a short time.

    • Reconsider the layout, styling and colour choices in your home. Sometimes the design of your home can contribute to the cluttered feeling.

Use these 35 kitchen storage tips to create more space and stay organised.

    How to declutter your kitchen

    • When organising your kitchen, start with cupboards and drawers. You don’t need that chipped crockery. No. You don’t.

    • Apply the six-month rule to gadgets and tools: have you used it in the last six months? Will you use it in the next six?

    • Clear the benches, apply the same six-month rule and either store items immediately, or discard.

    • To tackle the “plastics” drawer – breathe – and slot them all into each other. Try using a saucepan lid organiser to keep lids stacked. This also works for chopping boards and breadboards.

    • Random tea towel problem? Add hooks to the side of a cupboard.

    • In the pantry, check use-by dates, wipe shelves, use containers or trays to group like items, restock containers and arrange them and cans so labels face forward – if you can’t see it, it won’t get used.

    • Create a dedicated zone for all your life admin, like an organisational board or file for bills, school notes and other bits of paper. You’ll need it!

How to declutter your living room

    • Identify your “worst offender” – the one you just can’t contain. Whether it’s books, knick-knacks or games, edit and cull ruthlessly.

    • Assign an amount of space to your problem item and, once you’ve filled it with your favourites, dispose of the rest.

    • Get rid of outdated technology, broken remote controls, games missing bits etc.

    • Have a cord kit, or some pull ties, on hand to tidy and restrain electrical cords. Find a nice bowl in which to corral remote controls.

    • Strip stained or shabby cushions; if the covers can’t be refreshed with a wash, you’re better off without them.

    • Keep magazines and extra throws tidy but visible in a lovely basket.

    • Messy shelves? Neaten up the contents of any display units for an instant and big difference.

    • Add the finishing touch – fragrant fresh flowers or a diffuser.

Follow these 4 simple steps to easily organise your wardrobe.

(Photography: Grace Picot | Story: Homes to Love)

    How to declutter wardrobes

    • Clothes everywhere… nothing to wear? Organise your wardrobe by breaking it down into segments – work, exercise, sleep, etc – and keep your favourite outfits for each most visible.

    • If it doesn’t fit /suit you, or you never wear it, bin it (unless it’s your wedding dress). If you don’t feel good when you put it on, it’s out.

    • If it’s stained, torn or hopelessly worn, it’s toast. Be ruthless.

    • Put never-worn and high-quality items to one side to sell.

    • Check the pockets of anything you’re chucking before you bag it.

    • Assess if you need dividers or other inserts before you declutter drawers. They’ll help to keep you on the straight and narrow. Or try organising guru Marie Kondo’s rolling method.

    • Attach hooks or racks inside doors for jewellery, scarves and hats. If you have extra shelf space, its worth investing in storage containers to keep your jewellery organised.

    • If you are bursting at the seams consider under-bed storage – there are so many affordable options.

Keep your bathroom space pristine with these 5 ways to organise your bathroom vanity.

(Photography: Anson Smart | Styling: Kate Lincoln | Story: Inside Out)

    How to declutter your bathroom

    • Go through cupboards and drawers for old products – hotel sachets circa 2000 need to go, now. Old make-up and scents also go off. So make sure you get rid of them while you’re organising your vanity.

    • Put any brushes in a cleaning solution to soak when you start the room, then rinse and leave to dry when you’re done.

    • If your drawers have bottles, tins and dried-up mascara wands rolling around in them, cull and re-store in shallow baskets.

    • Your favourite shampoo may be on special, but do you really have room for 10 of them?

    • Old medications are a common clutter culprit; never argue with an expiry date or broken blister pack. Dispose of according to the label.

    • Seriously short on bathroom storage? Buy a small tiered trolley or stand.

    • If you do nothing else, fold or roll your towels up… nicely.

    How to declutter your office

    • If you need storage for your home office, make it separate to daily life admin.

    • Don’t operate on instinct; before you tackle paperwork, check how long you actually have to keep it, as you may find you can cull years’ worth (for tax return documents it’s five years).

    • Bin all broken items, from tech to pens. Check your local council website for e-waste disposal guidelines and collection dates.

    • Kids’ art and memorabilia tends to congregate here; fill one box or file per child, close your eyes and chuck the rest.

    • Have one basket for unopened mail, one for bills to be paid and one for filing.

    • Colour-code your children! Have one coloured folder per child for useful info – everything from birth certificates to sports rosters.

Take care of linen sheets to keep your linen cupboard fresh and organised.

    (Photography: Carlotta + Gee)

How to declutter your Linen Cupboard

    • Take everything out, dust and wipe the shelves.

    • Keep sheet sets and pillowcases together. Either store sheets and doona covers inside one pillowcase or tie the whole set up inside one sheet with a ribbon.

    • For stable piles, stack like items – towels with towels, facecloths with facecloths – and use dividers.

    • For a neat finish, fold like you work in a homewares shop, with folded edges facing out. Or roll them.

    • Don’t keep too many “extra” sets. Do you really need them? Especially that yellowing “white” set. Old sheets can become drop cloths.

    • Separate winter and summer linens, cotton and wool blankets.

    • Use scented liners to make the cupboard fragrant.

    • Vacuum-bag spare doonas.

    • Use baskets for any random smaller items you keep in there.

You may have heard the phrase ‘work harder not smarter’, but when it comes to cleaning a house, it’s all too easy to continue doing things the way you’ve always done them without realising quicker, more efficient ways exist.

Our roundup of 40 of the best house cleaning tips will have your whole house clean in the blink of an eye, so you can spend more time doing things you actually want to do!

A little bit of cleaning a day can help to prevent a major build-up by the end of the week.

(Design: Sarah Harris Design | Styling: Heather Nette King | Photography: Armelle Habib)

    KITCHEN CLEANING TIPS

    • To clean a stainless-steel sink, put the stopper in the sink with two denture-cleaning tablets and half fill with water; leave for several hours or overnight and the next day it should be sparkling. Then use the water to clean the draining board, too.

    • To stop ants entering your house, draw a chalk line on the ground where you want them to stop. If you live in a rainy area where ants are a problem, you must re-draw the chalk lines each time it rains.

    • To clean a microwave oven, add four tablespoons of lemon juice to one cup of water in a microwave-safe bowl. Boil for five minutes in the microwave, allowing the steam to condense on the inside walls of the oven. Then wipe them with a soft cloth.

    • To stop drawers from sticking, rub a bar of soap across the runners to make them glide smoothly.

    • To pick up small fragments of broken glass, press pieces of bread onto the affected area.

    LIVING ROOM CLEANING TIPS

    • To remove furniture indentations from pure wool carpet place a tea towel over the area and then press with a warm iron. The heat will lift the fibres. Do not attempt this with synthetic or a wool/synthetic mix carpet.

    • To clean glass windows, add about one tablespoon of cornstarch to about one litre of lukewarm water. Wet and a rag or squeegee, remove excessive water and wipe down glass as if using regular glass cleaner. Dry with either a soft cloth or paper.

    • Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to clean the tops and creases of Roman blinds.

    • To prevent ash from flying everywhere when cleaning out a fireplace, use a spray bottle filled with water to cover the ashes with a light mist.

When changing your bedsheets, be sure to give the mattress a once-over with the vacuum cleaner.

    BEDROOM CLEANING TIPS

    • To locate light switches in the dark, put a dot of luminous paint on tape and stick to the switches.

    • Vacuuming a mattress, particularly along piping and crevices, removes dead skin cells that attract dust mites.

    CLOTHING CARE TIPS

    • Stop clothes with thin straps falling off hangers by sticking small felt furniture pads onto the hanger just beyond where the straps sit.

    • To keep spiders or any other nasty surprises out of shoes you keep outside, (such as your gardening shoes or work boots), place old stockings over the top of them. Make sure the stockings don’t have holes in them, and if they don’t fit snugly over the top, use an elastic band to secure them.

    • To prevent buttons from becoming loose or undone, dab a little clear nail varnish on the top thread or onto the stem of the thread and leave to dry.

    • To keep pinking shears or scissors sharp, cut through a sheet of folded aluminium foil or coarse sandpaper.

    • To deter silverfish, place whole cloves in wardrobes and drawers.

    • To clean the bottom of the iron, sprinkle salt on the ironing board and iron back and forth.

    STAIN REMOVAL TIPS

    • Eucalyptus oil removes the gummy residue left by shop stickers.

    • To remove oil from silk clothing, gently rub cornflour into the area and lightly brush off. Cover the oil mark completely with more cornflour and leave to sit for a few hours. Shake clothing free of flour and then hand wash, or use a gentle machine cycle, using soap suitable for delicates.

    • Buffing a marble tabletop with car polish leaves a thin, invisible film that helps reduce the risk of stains.

    • To get blood out of fabrics, use hydrogen peroxide. Apply it directly to the stain and then launder in the washing machine.

    • To remove body oil stains from collars and cuffs of coloured shirts and blouses, rub hair shampoo directly on the stains. Rinse out the shampoo, then wash the clothes as usual.

    • To remove fingerprints from stainless-steel appliances, place a small amount of baby oil on a napkin and wipe the affected areas. The fingerprints will just wipe away.

    • To remove marker pen off hard surfaces, spray on hair spray and then wipe it off.

    • To restore toilet bowls back to their shiny best, clean with old, flat Coke or Pepsi. To dissolve limescale, leave the soda overnight to soak.

    • To remove cat and dog hair from furniture, rub them with damp rubber gloves.

Freezing candles for 24 hours before you light them can increase burn time.

    ODOUR REMOVAL TIPS

    • Light a match and let it burn a few seconds to remove toilet smells.

    • To leave a room smelling fresh after you have vacuumed, place a few drops of your favourite essential oil (such as lavender or peppermint) near the vent where the hot air is released. The air warms the oil and blows it into the room.

    • To mask unpleasant odors, put some coffee beans in a saucepan and burn them. The smell of coffee will overpower the other nasty odors.

    • To get rid of the smell of garlic from your hands, rub against stainless steel – your sink is ideal. Then wash hands with soap or detergent.

    • To make candles last longer, cover with a plastic bag and place in the freezer for 24 hours before lighting.

    BATHROOM CLEANING TIPS

    • To stop bathroom mirrors steaming up, regularly rub a dry bar of soap over the surface and rub in with a clean cloth.

    • To reuse the bits of soap that are always left over, combine them with glycerine and some warm water. Pour into a bottle for a handmade liquid soap.

    • To clean your shower curtain, wash it in the washing machine with about one cup each of vinegar and bleach, some white towels and a normal amount of washing powder. Adding fabric softener will help keep the curtain clean. When the load is done, return the curtains to their place in the bathroom to drip dry. The wrinkles will disappear in a day or so. (Check your washing machine manual to ensure it’s okay to use bleach).

    • Clove oil (sold in chemists for toothaches) kills mould spores. Mix three drops in one litre of water and then use to wipe down areas susceptible to mould.

    OUTDOOR CLEANING TIPS

    • If you have an aquarium, save the water each time you change it and water your house plants with it. It’s full of nutrients and makes a great fertiliser.

    • Use leftover styrofoam peanuts as great drainage in the bottom of a plant pot.

    • To revive a vase of wilted flowers, add a teaspoon of mild detergent.

    • To remove pollen from the stamen of flowers, take a piece of sticky tape about five centimetres long, gently press the sticky side to the pollen mark and lift off. Repeat with clean sticky tape as required. Do not try to brush it off.

    • To keep your car windows ice and frost free when left outside overnight in the wintertime, mix three parts vinegar to one part water, put it in a spray bottle and spray on the windows as needed.

Basic hygiene is important all year round but in the current climate it’s wise to scrub up on your household cleanliness and, at the very least, make sure you’re washing these everyday items as often as you should.

Here, the cleaning experts at Mattress Online have revealed how often you should wash everything from your pillowcases to your make-up brushes and even your computer keyboard. If you thought your house was squeaky clean, their answers might shock you.

HOUSEHOLD ITEMS YOU SHOULD BE CLEANING EVERY DAY

There are more than a few common household items that you should be washing more often than you think.

    MAKE-UP BRUSHES

You may be surprised to hear that your make-up brushes should be washed once a week — using a cleanser or shampoo. The bacteria streptococcus can live in the bristles, causing a series of illnesses such as scarlet fever, impetigo and strep throat, if not cleaned regularly.

    BEDDING

Air your mattress daily and wash bedding – sheets and duvet cover – weekly. The experts have also recommended your pillowcases be washed every other day and your mattress vacuumed once a fortnight.

    TEA TOWELS AND DISHCLOTHS

Tea towels and dishcloths should be washed daily or every second day, depending on how much you use your kitchen. It’s wise to have a couple of tea towels on the go for different uses: one for food prep, one for drying dishes. Microfiber cleaning cloths can be washed and reused.

    COMPUTER KEYBOARD

Your computer keyboard should be cleaned once a week to stop the spread of germs. Wash once a week with a can of compressed air to spray between the keys and use a sanitising wipe.

    CHILDREN’S TOYS

Toys should be washed once a week. Use warm soapy water or run them through a dishwasher if they’re durable. Soft toys, like teddy bears, can cleaned in the washing machine.

    BATH MAT AND TOWELS

You should air your bath mat after every shower, and wash at least once a week. Bath towels and hand towels should be washed at 40 degrees every two days. But when doing so, don’t go overboard on detergent, as it can build up over time and cause your towels to smell.

    LIGHT SWITCHES

Wipe them down with an antibacterial wipe every week. The same goes for TV remotes and other gadgets you use regularly.

    SOFAS

Your sofas should be vacuumed with a fabric brush attachment at least once a week to get rid of crumbs, dust, dirt and pet hair. You can also use a fabric sanitiser or disinfectant spray like Glen20 to kill germs.
